Scout Scribbles – Sturridge Could Be Out for Season

Daniel Sturridge could miss the rest of the season for Liverpool. Hull could welcome back Mo Diame for this evening’s encounter with the Merseysiders. Diego Costa remains a real doubt for Chelsea’s trip to Leicester, whilst Nigel Pearson considers ringing the changes against the champions-elect.

Sturridge return doubtful this campaign

Daniel Sturridge’s season has been hit hard by a bevy of injuries – the latest of which could keep him sidelined for the remainder of the campaign. Speaking on the English striker’s ongoing travails in yesterday’s press conference, Brendan Rodgers insisted that the club would strive to get him back to full fitness but wouldn’t compromise his long-term health.

“When he’s been fit he’s been brilliant for the team, the key now is to see if we can get him back fit and consistently playing. We’ll see if that’s going to be this season or the pre-season. We’ll do what’s in the best interests of him; we have to protect Daniel and make sure he’s going to be here over the next number of years, playing and playing to the level that we all know he can.”

The Scout Says: In the absence of even a tentative return date, it looks increasingly likely that Sturridge will play no further part this campaign. Raheem Sterling had been the player touted to assume the goal scoring mantle in his stead, yet that didn’t transpire on the weekend, with the fleet-footed winger failing to fashion a single shot against West Brom at the weekend – as compared to Philippe Coutinho’s nine efforts on goal. Those who handed Sterling the captaincy over Eden Hazard will hope that Hull’s defence is more obliging than the Baggies’ rejuvenated rearguard. There’s promise in that respect, given that Steve Bruce’s men conceded the fourth-highest number of big chances (eight) in the last four Gameweeks, shipping eight goals in the process.

Mourinho eschews heavy rotation for Foxes tie

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho does not intend to name many alterations to his starting line-up when the Blues roll up to the King Power Stadium tomorrow night for their second match in four days.

“I don’t plan to make many changes. I know Leicester played on Saturday and we played on Sunday, but we will try to recover the players as best we can. We will leave the young players here to play their cup final against Man City so we don’t take them with us. Our squad is very short with the injuries we have and so there is no space for a lot of rotation.”

Speaking on the fitness of some of his key stars, the Portuguese boss admitted he’s unlikely to take a gamble on playing Diego Costa – in light of his propensity for injury setbacks – while Oscar was discharged from the hospital and slept at home following a serious collision with Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina on the weekend.

“I don’t know about Diego Costa. I have to think about if it deserves a gamble or if we wait a few more days to be completely sure. If it was a player without an injury history I would play him tomorrow, but because he is a player with a history I have to think about that. I really don’t know how Oscar is but the most important thing is that he is not in hospital. He went immediately to his house yesterday, slept at home, and he should be arriving [today].”

The Scout Says: Considering that Costa sustained a fresh hamstring injury the last time Mourinho took a calculated risk starting him, next weekend’s home clash with Palace now appears to be a more realistic return date. As the Blues manager showed against Arsenal, though, he has no qualms over utilising a false nine system to deal with his lack of strikers, with Loic Remy also missing out this evening. Indeed, there’s a possibility that if Chelsea clinch the title by the weekend, Mourinho could use Costa sparingly for the remaining matches in order to rest his dodgy hamstrings – a real concern for the forward’s 28% ownership.

Diame could return for Liverpool clash

Hull City manager Steve Bruce could welcome back Mo Diame and Andrew Robertson to his squad for their home tie against Liverpool on Tuesday, with no new injury complaints to report.

The Scout Says: Although Diame, at best, will only be afforded brief minutes in a potential return from injury against the Reds, his reinstatement would be good news for the Tigers’ chances of survival beyond this double Gameweek. The Senegalese midfielder’s eye for goal – as demonstrated by his four in five starts at the start of the season – would augment the assist potential of the likes of Ahmed Elmohamady and Dame N’Doye, who were both subject to investment spikes last week. Owners of the duo now watch on as they attempt to unlock a Liverpool back line that’s recorded clean sheets in four of their last six. On the flipside, the Merseysiders’ relative impotency at The Hawthorns offers hope for owners of Hull’s defenders that a shut-out is on the cards at the KC this evening.

Pearson may shuffle squad for Blues visit

Nigel Pearson hasn’t ruled out enacting a few changes to Leicester’s starting XI for their match-up against Chelsea. David Nugent and Jeffrey Schlupp are still touch-and-go for the Blues clash, while Jamie Vardy needed an injection in his foot before the Burnley fixture. With the Foxes facing Newcastle United in Saturday’s early kick off, Pearson is wary of further injuries given the quick turnaround of matches:

“My focus is Leicester City, we will always do what is best for us. If we need to freshen it up, we will. We’ve picked up some injuries in games. The likes of Nugent and Schlupp will have to be assessed to see whether they are going to be available for this one (Chelsea) or the weekend… Vardy had an injection in his foot just before the [Burnley] game. We will assess it. It’s not too bad getting players prepared for this game, but of course then it becomes the situation of we have a game played earlier on a Saturday having played on a Wednesday, but that’s how it is. Of course we have to keep an eye on [the Newcastle game]. It would be remiss of us not to do that because we work heavily in conjunction with the medical and sports science aspects of the Football Club. The considerations are about our players and the turnaround of games. I’m not too concerned about other people’s thoughts.”

The Scout Says: Pearson’s soundbites don’t dispel the notion that he could rest a selection of key players ahead of the more winnable Newcastle visit on Saturday. Although the Foxes will fancy their chances against any outfit at home in light of their ongoing four-match winning streak, owners of Wes Morgan, Robert Huth and Esteban Cambiasso will pray that the head coach doesn’t spring a surprise and make a raft of changes. The fitness of Schlupp and Nugent remains a concern looking beyond the double. Leicester close out the season with an agreeable run-in that includes three home clashes (NEW, SOU, QPR) and a trip to Sunderland – validating the tactic to heavily back Pearson’s side in the first place. The Magpies encounter is certainly one that Schlupp’s ownership would be loath to miss out on, given that the Tynesiders have notched a pitiful five goals in nine Gameweeks.

Advocaat considers omitting Johnson for Black Cats run-in

Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat is considering keeping Adam Johnson out of the matchday squad until the end of the season in response to his off-field issues, citing the winger’s current mental state as a primary concern.

The Scout Says: Save for the ongoing investigations surrounding Adam Johnson, the Black Cats winger would’ve been a prime candidate for their double Gameweek 37 (LEI, ars) had he played himself back into form with a run of starts. In his absence, Fantasy managers may well turn their attention towards Jack Rodwell (two goals in seven) and Sebastian Larsson (three goals, four assists this season) in their search for midfield differentials. Connor Wickham (two in two) reaffirmed his position as a strong selection with his goal against Stoke City on the weekend, while Jermain Defoe (three in nine) will be on a few radars across the next two rounds of fixtures.

Play one out of Duff, McShane, PvA for the upcoming Gameweek?

    Rest of team is

    Kasper (Panti)
    Ivan, Skrtel Duff/McShane/PvA
    Fab Hazard Ramsey Hendo Sanchez
    Kane Aguero (Vardy)

Or could possible play Vardy over Hendo as well....

While it is still fairly how many and which DGW players are you currently planning to have for DGW 37.

    I'm thinking 3 ARS and 2 SUN.

    Currently have Sanchez and Pants

Giroud will come in along with one of Ramsey/Ozil/Kosc

Then will probably go for a punt on Sunderland attack (Larsson/Gomez/Wickham/Defoe on my radar)

I agree, but transfers are too luxury at the moment, I can't afford to get rid of him. It also wouldn't free up enough funds (only 0.6 if I get Duff/McShane) which wouldn't help me much elsewhere.

In an awkward situation with him so the only thing i can do is hold and hope.

Have you got PVA? If i had Bellerin my escape route would be to save 2ft for gw 37 then go Bellerin ->PVA and grab a different Arsenal player with second FT

No worries mate and yeah exactly. Panti looks good for saves in the DGW, I got rid for Mignolet a week back though because Krul covered GW36 better and I wouldn't want to double up on Sunderland in the DGW

5 goals in their last 11 games.

Then trying to pick scraps between the forever injured Fletcher, the well past it Defoe, and the League 1 player Wickham.

          No thanks. 😉

Doesn't concern me tbh. All lower table teams have bad patches of form. I will only be concerned if that continues for the next couple of gw's.

            Fletcher -non option.

Defoe and Wickham are both definitely worth considering.

Anywhere between 4 and 6. Depends on how Sunderland are playing and what situation they are in nearer the time. I have PvA. Larsson/Rodwell and Wickham/Defoe are others I may bring in.

      1. Nabs Kebabs
        • 12 Years

Yep their form will be very important and i may end up just going with Pants if they're not looking any decent. Rodwell over the more attacking and on pens man Gomez? Interested in the thought process behind that.

        1. Ruth_NZ

Rodwell is cheaper and it depends on what cash I'd have spare in view of other transfers. If I were paying 5.1 for Gomez I'd rather pay 5.3 for Larsson. Plus I think Rodwell is a talented young player. That's all really.

either 5 or 6, depending on S'land's form. I already have Panti, PvA and Kosc. Will bring in the form Arsenal mid and Giroud with FTs (would also involve an Ivano downgrade after GW35). Which would mean I would need to take a hit if I wanted any S'land attacking players, which, although unlikely, I won't rule out just in case 😛

FTs in the pocket are valuable right now. Not the time of season to be taking unnecessary hits.

On your choice I think it all comes down to whether you want Kane for GW37. I lost him on wildcard but haven't entirely excluded bringing him back for that GW - it will probably be one of Kane/Defoe/Wickham/Austin replacing N'Doye. Although it's not impossible I might keep N'Doye for Spurs (a) either.

Personally I'd like to get to GW38 with 2 FTs so I can take some punts and take account of potential team changes in the last GW.

I agree 100%, most people were advising me earlier to go through with Kane -> Giroud earlier today but I still wasn't convinced.

Kane does have that plum gw 37 fixture but due to the dgw he is not so necessary because he isn't a captain option then. Even if he explodes, he won't hurt too much if you don't have him because hardly anyone will have him captain.

I'm thinking similar aswell, gw 38 is imo the best week of the season to go for punts.

      They'll be strong lineups.

I think Wojjy will play the last 2 games, as will Theo, and Wilshere could get game time, and Ox is almost fit again.

That puts Cazorla, Ramsey, Ospina at risk, Debuchy will probably get game time somewhere, as could Gabriel and Gibbs.

        Cheers for the insight.

In my draft league I'm deciding between Monreal & Welbeck (best options available) for my 3rd Arsenal slot........ Got Gru.

Would you punt on Welbz (covering Gru rotation) or Monreal?

          That's a tough one.

I'd probably go for Welbeck, because although both face rotation risk, at least Welbeck could come off the bench.

I think both will start against Man U, and I'd rather have an attacker than a defender at Old Trafford.

Monreal seems nailed, but didn't Gibbs play the semi final?

No, I don't think so, it was just a bit of rotation against a weak team.

Gibbs has been increasingly poor, and Monreal has been outstanding since playing centre back.

I'd be very surprised, and very annoyed if Monreal didn't start the final.

Interesting, appreciate the comments - I agree, Monreal has looked very solid when I have seen him play.

I guess I need to decide if I think Monreal is going to be rotated in the league enough to justify going Welbeck over him......?

Oh man, Ramsey and Ospina were both a big part of my thinking...

One alternative would be to bring in a Sunderland forward/midfielder to allow the funds turn that Ramsey transfer in to Sanchez. There aren't any outstanding Sunderland candidates though are there?

I think I decided last week on WC to go without him. I experimented with various drafts, including some which had him in, and decided, based on a thorough analysis of the remaining games, and who I would be playing if I chose Sanchez (acknowledging the downgrades required in other areas to make that happen) I decided against.

He could still be the man, but I'm hoping he's not.

It's all about the balance of your squad.

If you have cash you don't need then Sanchez. If you could use it better elsewhere then Ozil is also fine and could easily outscore Sanchez in DGW anyway. I'd be happy with either.

I don't think it's a cash thing anymore at this point, it's about points. Even if you have 2m spare, current form suggests Ozil + Ramsey both have a better chance of scoring big than Sanchez. Can't see many going without Alexis though despite this. It's all about the fear.

    8. Shifty

If it was going with him as a WC pick til end of the season - one might question his value.

But for a DGW, you're taking a one week punt on a big score from a player that has the ability to score big hauls in two successive games.

Personally, Sanchez has that explosive streak that fits the bill. Ramsey does too and is kinder on the budget. Ozil, for me, is not as good a pick as he's the sort of player that will pass the ball to a teammate if the teammate is in a better position. Sanchez or Ramsey have the guts to take that shot.

With right planning, Sanchez is definitely affordable. But a decision would probably have to be made now whether you want Sanchez in your team as it affects your subsequent transfers.

Personally, plan to go into GW37 with 2 transfers to allow myself maximum flexibility w.r.t the Sanchez issue.

Nobody is denying that he's explosive but he hasn't got the form to back it up. Most are just getting him out of fear even though players like Ozil and Ramsey have been outperforming him *consistently* for the past couple of months.

Yep. I plan to have 2 FTs, but most likely getting one of Ramsey/Ozil before GW37 anyway (have Giroud).

So the 2 FTs will be between

          A) Downgrade Ivan/Aguero to fund Sanchez...if that is deemed worth the risk 😯
          B) Get the other of Ramsey/Ozil and use the other FT for a SGW punt.

Most likely going to go with B. Ramsey + Ozil + Giroud for DGW.

    Hi all,

Sanchez & Giroud already in ready for DGW.

How about these for moves in the next few weeks?:

    Sterling & Clyne > Ramsey & PVA

    Schmeichel > Panti

    Kane > Benteke.

I would of brought in Ozil instead of Ramsey, however, If I wanted to bring in Benteke for the run-in then I could only afford Ramsey for the DGW. Or should I scrap the Benteke move, stick with Kane and bring in Ozil instead of Ramsey?.

Murray to Giroud for a hit maybe?

Murray against a Chelsea side treating it as a finale. Giroud against Hull who'll go out and attack the game, leaving chances at the back?

This isn't the best time to take hits now though and I can just afford this move, else I'll have to lose Kane should Giroud rise and Murray fall (which are both unlikely to happen this week though).

You'd expect the same lineup we have been playing against Man U (although Ox could come back on the right), and after that, who knows.

I'm going for Caz as my third, because he's probably our next best player, but I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see him benched against Sunderland.

So, in other news today, "Chelsea transfer target Nathan drops huge hint he's signed for Blues". Nathan _who_? Nate from the board? Or my neighbour's cousin Nathan, who's indeed a Chelsea fan but also a fat kid?

Oh, never mind, it's some Brazilian going by the 'stage name' Nathan? Ooooh... that's even worse!!! What have these Brazilian football stage names come to: Jo, Fred, Oscar, Bernard, Willian, Hulk and now Nathan. That's really the worst of the lot. Nathan!!! Yes, let me introduce my Brasilian footballer friend, Zico, erm, I mean... Nathan. You can imagine he's some artist with the ball!

I said this at the World Cup: from Pele, Zico, Socrates, Tostao, Garrincha, Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Rivelino to Jo, Fred and Bernard. I blame it for their decline in performance and loss of flair if anything. Their only top quality attacking player is the one with a proper 'Brazilian' name - Neymar.

Well, it sort of is. It's not his stage name, but his real first name, and this is due to a peculiar South American habit of naming the kids with last names famous persons, such as Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Jefferson, or Yeltsin (of course, Socrates is not really a last name, but he's known by it like Mozart is known by his last name).

You can't blame Nathan for being named Nathan, it wasn't his choice, but what has happened to Brazilian football culture that he doesn't pick a cool stage name then? Didn't anybody think to call him something other than Nathan? Are they really happy that their playmaker is called Nathan?

I get your point and I think it is a bit silly.

Maybe we should let them have these names, pass them off as English and England may actually win a tournament?

          GK – Tom (Portuguesa)

          DF – Alex (PSG)
          DF – Tony (Gremio)
DF – Max (Vasco da Gama)
          DF – Cris (Lyon)

          MF – Douglas (Corinthians)
          MF – Fred (Sport)
          MF – Roger (Cruzeiro)
MF – Danny (Zenit St Petersburgh)

          FW – Bill (Santos)
          FW – Alan (Braga)

Fred, Oscar, Bernard, Nathan, Jo and maybe hulk to that list and England may win the next World Cup

well, Venezuealn by origin. But big deal. The point is, he's "Danny". Checked the full name: Daniel Miguel Alves Gomes. You think he would have been called "Danny" if he played for Portugal 30 years ago? He's a good player, but for crying out loud: Danny!

Sure, but why don't they have some decent nicknames then? And I doubt Fred was a common name in Brazil back when Pelé played? Maybe some name that they would now abbreviate Fred, but sure they would have called him something else decades ago. This is a culture vanishing before anglo-american cultural imperialism.

Exactly what I thought. So, you think they've always abbreviated it Fred? Former Portugal international Frederico Rosa was known as Frederico, and yes, I would rather watch a Frederico than a Fred playing for Brazil NT.

they can do it by their laws...i'm not sure about this, but they can put every name they want.. there is even a story with one children called Xerox.

Frederico and Alexandre (example) are the usual names, but people always abbreviated it to Fred or Alex, and then Brazil addapted this 2 forms by their laws, and this to examples are similares to English names.

in Portugal (if our parents are portuguese) we only are allowed to give Staints name, or similars.

Had a little read of a Liverpool fans forum re: tonight's game. Two things struck me:

    1. 6 out of 7 predicted line ups featured Moreno

    2. Most of them want Rodgers gone. Bit harsh!

To a certain extent yeah. I just think back to how good they were last season which was probably their best football since they last won the title. Take away the two goal scorers and replace them with Balloteloi and it's no wonder they've struggled. I think he's shown what he can do with quality players so the board should back him and bring in some quality for him to work with.

Fair enough. I think he's a bit of a fraud, and that their best football was more down to Suarez being so good, and having players such as Coutinho, Sterling and Sturridge who worked so well in tandem with him. The pace, finishing and trickery was too much for most sides. Rodgers hasn't really proved much for me, but maybe he does need a bit more time and more players to prove himself. Fair point about Balotelli, that was always destined to fail.

I think he's a bit of a fraud in the way he projects this image of the great manager. Like he's a Clough or Shankley type character. I don't put it all down to Suarez last season although obviously he was a massive part. I was more impressed with the style of play of the team, so fast and brilliant to watch I thought. I think finishing 5th is exactly were they are in relation to how good the squad is and if Sturridge had played a lot more games then who knows.

Exactly. Not sure how useful predicted lineups are here when he's injured. Do they have inside info on how he's doing or what? Infact, local journalist james pearce said he was unlikely to be available.

I doubt they have inside info, they are just fans. He seems a more credible source.

All in all though, I'm not sure what's better as a non-owner, Moreno to start or him to not start? There's surely gotta be some jammy points off the bench (Bellerin, Kos, WBA defenders etc.)

A lot of fans, of several clubs, seem to forget that their own clubs spend less in wages then some of the big boys.

That automatically puts Rodgers at a disadvantage.

Definitely worth another season to see how he goes.

        1. Wilshere Knowledge

I think it depends on how much he is responsible for some of the signings.

If it's mainly due to Rodgers, then as a fan I'd worry about his ability to identify players.

You expect some hit and miss, but he has spunked A LOT of money away.

Yep, that's true - although you need to give some players time.

I think you'll see Lovren become a better player next year, certainly.

Although Balotelli was a dreadful signing - done to try and appease fans that were upset at losing Suarez I think.

Big name, but more trouble than he is worth.

But then there's also Manquillo, Borini, Markovic, Mignolet, Lambert, Aspas and worst of all that £8m Spanish midfielder... Alberto or something?

Even if they come good as well, Lovren and Lallana are overpriced.

That being said, I do think he is a very good coach. He did very well to find a system that worked so well, with a relatively average squad.

Perhaps Liverpool could be one of very few clubs to actually benefit from a Director of Football position.

Lambert could have been decent if he'd given him gametime - absurd to expect a guy of his age to just switch it on for sub appearances.

Haven't watched much of the others, but take your point - not exactly world beaters!

There is something odd re transfer policy there. If it's a committee or whatever. It was enough to make Martinez turn them down which should've raised eyebrows more at the time.

Yep, a manager lives and dies by his signings, I guess we'll never know who bought who but I bet the Ballotelli one was a board decision. That one was purely about a potential money maker.

yes but how can you tell if he'll be fit for weekend if he fails his fitness test? 😉

The great Ben Dinnery on Moreno: http://i.imgur.com/HLcI6Gs.png

clearly blags it, and just listens to the press conferences and local reports like everyone else

well Dinnery denied any injury for Vardy

Cheers, Demi! I just hope he's not deemed fit enough to start on the bench and come off for a point 🙁

The funny thing is even though he obviously just reports other people's news, people actually believe he has inside info on like every single club!

        Any news on Moreno, Ben?
Hang on I'll just Google that for you!

Hopefully Haz(c) gets a hat trick and makes this game week irrelevant

if everyone has captained him it makes no difference

How would that make it irrelevant?

Points already to be had from all the double gameweek defenders, n'doye and vardy etc

      not if you've captained Sterling!

Bellerins risk of rotation might make me go for following:

Bellerin Vardy Sterling -> PVA Wickham Sterling for -4.

      Er 2nd Sterling is Ramsey

I'd say hold mate. Bellerin could hold his place and even though he might not start both in the DGW it's still worth holding with hull then SWA. Not sure on Wickham, and certainly wouldn't get rid of Vardy against NEW this week. Sterling -> Ramsey can wait a week, Sterling has QPR and another week to see how the Arsenal midfield pans out would be ideal.

His hair is certainly getting worse and worse - he is looking more like Bill Murray in Kingpin every game.

Has there ever been a big DGW like this where all the teams involved kept a CS in the games not against each other?
