Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 35 – The Weak

After casting on eye over the sides with strong fixtures to follow, we now turn our attentions to those who have less reason to be cheerful. Palace’s season is in danger of petering out, whilst Hull and the Baggies face a tough task to pick up the points over the final four Gameweeks of the season.

Crystal Palace

frisking
After a rampant start to life under Alan Pardew, the Eagles have dropped off in the last couple of Gameweeks, losing two successive home matches against relegation contenders West Brom and Hull. Their chances of returning to form now look slim, with a horrendous next three handing them away days at Chelsea and Liverpool either side of Man United’s trip to Selhurst Park, and we can expect those who invested in Palace’s star assets to be in the market for alternatives.

Glenn Murray’s three consecutive double-figure hauls between Gameweeks 30-32 were enough to convince over 150,000 managers to snap up his services prior to the Baggies defeat, and for those who chose to keep faith for last weekend’s equally disappointing loss to Hull, an exit route is now a priority. The same can be said for owners of Yannick Bolasie, who has also failed to produce returns in the last two and looks set to struggle against the watertight defences of Chelsea and Liverpool. With just a single clean sheet accrued in their last 14, few were paying much interest to the Eagles’ rearguard as it was, but the schedule should guarantee that the likes of Scott Dann and Joel Ward remain far from managers’ thoughts.

West Brom

frisking
The Baggies have rediscovered their resilience in recent weeks, recording clean sheets in each of their last two outings after having shipped 10 goals in their previous three. That resolve will need to be maintained if they are to reap further success from their final four fixtures of the campaign, with away clashes with Man United, Newcastle and Arsenal and a home encounter with Chelsea making up a testing run-in that looks set to deprive them of Fantasy interest.

Boaz Myhill’s appeal as a budget option between the sticks will rely on his save points from here on in, whilst Joleon Lescott and Craig Dawson are due to face the chop or be relegated to our benches by their remaining owners. Midfielders Chris Brunt and Craig Gardner have both delivered returns in recent Gameweeks, but are set to remain on the periphery of our thinking despite their budget price tags. Up top, Saido Berahino has now failed to find the net since Gameweek 28, and is now unlikely to come back into the reckoning until next season.

Hull

frisking
The surprise outfit of the current double Gameweek, the Tigers have recorded back-to-back shut-outs and two vital victories over the past four days, and are now four points clear of the relegation places. There’s still plenty of hard work to do, however – a home meeting with Arsenal precedes a scrap with fellow relegation contenders Burnley, and with clashes against Spurs and United drawing things to a close, Steve Bruce’s side will need to prove their mettle if they are to dodge the drop.

Dame N’Doye served up a 15-point haul for his 6,000+ new owners across the double, but even that may not be enough to convince them to stick with the differential striker, who could be set to toil up against a Gunners backline who have conceded just twice in their last five league fixtures. Hull’s defence have been one of the undeniable heroes of the double so far, and though they now have momentum on their side, backing them to produce against the likes of Arsenal Spurs and United may be a step too far for most, leaving just that Burnley showdown as a potential source of points.

Be Wary Of..

QPR
Sitting four points from safety, and with only one win in their previous nine attempts, things are looking increasingly desperate for Chris Ramsey’s men. A quick glance at the upcoming schedule should only see that desperation increase, with the Hoops set for three testing away dates in their final four, as they travel to Liverpool and Man City in their next two before heading to the King Power Stadium for a crucial showdown with Leicester on the final day of the season. Charlie Austin’s ‘fixture proof’ status looks vital for their success, though his miss from the spot against West Ham at the weekend is sure to have shaken him up and has already convinced nearly 10,000 managers to part company, whilst Matty Phillips has now blanked in his last two and is set to be consigned to the bench by his band of owners.

Swansea
A change of system last time out brought Gylfi Sigurdsson roaring back onto managers’ radars with a 13-point haul – his joint highest tally of the campaign – whilst fielded in behind lone striker Nelson Oliveira in a 4-2-3-1. Nonetheless, the Swans’ remaining fixture list could be enough to deter major investment, with two tricky away trips (ars, cpl) and a home meeting with Man City now on the agenda. At the back, the likes of Lukasz Fabianski and Ashley Williams have now gone four matches without a shut-out, and the omens do not look good for further defensive returns – a switch to a budget rearguard alternative appears a wise move to free up the cash to splash on Arsenal’s premium double Gameweek 37 assets.

Stoke
The Potters final run-in throws up two decent away ties with Swansea and Burnley, though their appeal is undoubtedly offset by what should prove a tricky pair of home clashes against Spurs and Liverpool. With little left to play for, it’s no surprise that the Midlanders have produced a mixed bag of results and performances of late, and we can expect that unpredictability to last throughout what’s left of the campaign. The likes of Ryan Shawcross and Asmir Begovic are not due to garner much attention, then, whilst Charlie Adam’s hot streak of three goals and an assist in his last five outings is still unlikely to alter his 0.6% ownership significantly

Chelsea at 1.75 is surely a very good bet? I'm thinking we are likely to attack attack attack and put many past Leicester and not worry about defending as much.

    Thoughts DZ?

I wouldn't put that bet on its own, just because you'd need a substantial stake to make a decent profit. But 1.75 for Chelsea as part of an acca sounds good !

Any tips on how to claw back a 55 point lead on my rival apart from the obvious differentials or is it game over for this season?

Thinking about captaining Ivanovic at the weekend, he will go Hazard no doubt but I cant play it safe now can i?

Chelsea won't be champions yet so Ivanovic will still play restrained (orders of Mou). Don't think it's right choice to captain now.

Definitely not over. You need a captain that your opponent doesn't own and some other differentials.

I wouldn't captain Ivanovic just because I think you have better options out there.

Skrtel (C) might turn out to be a great choice if Hazard blanks tonight. I've seen someone Captain N Doye, now that's genius.

I'm not sure what the question is. Are you asking if you should keep Silva? He's not been getting the returns last couple of games but he could easily produce a haul this weekend. One of those.

Ramsey.. his form is amazing right now and he is hungry.

Decide where you went wrong this season, be very honest about it (too many hits, waiting on players to reach form), address it and then after that hour has gone, enjoy the summer looking at birds, and do exactly the same for next season. Works for me every year

I was just kidding, although there will be so much analysis and research done by others that there will be a real template. This is a decent site for looking at Championship team stats (others can probably point you in the direction of better ones).

Anyway, while leagues are really not straight forward comparable, and you should take this with a pinch of salt, to put Championship in some perspective, I took a look at Rudy Gestede and Yann Kermorgant, who came there from the same league and both play attacking position and have had some success in Championship. [LONG POST ALERT]

Gestede has scored 19 goals and given 3 assists in 30(+8) matches as a forward for Blackburn. He is coming to his best age, so maybe he's got some potential, but I checked his background and according to FC Metz fans he had _one_ good match in French second tier when he played there, scoring two in that match. Other than that, he only scored 1 goal in his career there, and even in the French semi-professsional third tier he only scored 4 in 22 matches. He must have been a kind of a prospect, because he played 19 matches for French youth internationals. However, he also scored 0 goals in those matches. I'd guess he was one of those players who were physically impressive and thus put before their peers. In any event, he was unable to score goals there.

However, Gestede came to Championship at age of 22 after suffering many injuries and also had hard time in Cardiff before going to Blackburn, so maybe he has just developed?

Kermorgant gives better case for evaluation. At age of 33, he's scored 15 and assisted 9 in 25(+12) matches, and half of that from midfield. Kind of a hit for some years there now, according to Charlton fans:

                  http://valleytalkblog.com/2014/01/24/26-reasons-why-we-all-love-yann-kermorgant/

He gave his best years to the French second tier, where he also was a kind of a good player: captained Reims on his second and best season, when he scored 9 and assisted 9. He never really broke through in scoring sense, however (in 4 full seasons, 29 goals in 125 matches as a forward, best season 2006-2007 10 goals in 32 matches).

That league is a defensive, low scoring league (checked and the top scorer of that season scored 18 goals), so it's not very bad either. Still, bear in mind, it is a low money league filled with youth players and there he played forward: it's a shorter season, yet he played more matches and scored less goals than he's been scoring in Charlton and Bournemouth. not promising.

Now the crucial thing is that when he finally got a chance on higher level in French first tier, he was nowhere near the level and his scoring and assisting dropped dramatically: just 3 goals and 3 assists in 20(+6) matches. Sure, the club he signed for (just promoted Arlès-Avignon who went straight back down) was a mess, so maybe it was not all due to him. Still, I actually watched the French league and recall that he really didn't have the level.

The thing I draw from this is that if Kermorgant can score 8 goals and 4 assists from midfield in just 10 starts in Championship, and if Gestede scores 16 in 27 starts as forward, it doesn't really water my mouth when somebody has scored 20 goals and 7 assists in 44 starts as a CF in the Championship. That somebody is Callum Wilson, who sure is younger and developing, but I still wouldn't expect him to get to 10 goals in a full PL season.

That said, recently many players who have scored well in Championship, have been able to reproduce that scoring touch to some extent in PL too. So not saying that they'd surely be rubbish.

Pay close attention to the pre season. It's not always a good indication of whos going to start with a bang, but it is very nice for knowing who the favourites of the manager are to ensure getting players in who are nailed on.

Try to stick to a template with your GW 1 team that allows you good flexability. For example, starting with all budget defenders and midfielders and going too heavy in attack means that if a defender or midfielder becomes 'essential', it's going to cost you hits to be able to get them in.

Newly promoted teams tend to have quality, underpriced players. FFS will publish some articles about potential bargains, and I always seem to have 1-2 in my squad come match day 1.

      Hope this helps!

Thanks for this. I've never paid much attention to pre season football, even as a fan, and I think I could miss a trick there.

And this year I made exactly the mistake you describe - I did go budget in defense, loaded up at front and then tried to spread it out in midfield but it didn't work out for me..

There's already been some good reading about promotion prospects. I hopefully will be in a better position next year by having this resource.

Probably play safe and get players who are well and truly tested in PL. Like Haz,Aguero,Rooney,Terry and build my gw1 team around them.

Key part is to find those 4.0 nailed defenders and 4.5 mids.

I think having a frame of reference from this season in FPL terms will hopefully be an advantage! And I will focus more on balancing out my team overall so I have some room to manoeuvre if some players don't work out.

Don't plan too much because most of the things you though will have changed a few weeks into the season. Come one with a week to go before the season starts and pick your team then so as to avoid falling for pre-season bandwagons that flop when the league starts!

Concentrate on nailed-on defenders from solid teams with good fixtures and try to have no more than 2 punts in attack. The rest should be solid picks with a couple of heavy hitters who you would feel comfortable captaining.

Promoted teams are usually hard to call. If there's a nailed-on mid for 4.5m then you've got yourself a 5th mid! Sometimes attackers do well, sometimes they don't. Defenders often disappoint.

The second point you make is a tactic I like to go buy. I like to start with 3x nailed on players with good fixtures and are solid in defence and play them continuously. And then 2x very cheap players who can play in the games when my main three play the top teams.

I got burned by the defenders I picked last year.. this is definitely something I will have to think about! I was hoping a pre-season bandwagon might give me an edge 😛 But I definitely don't want to marry myself to anyone one approach do I think I will try 3 solid def, 3 strong mid, 2 strong attackers and fill in the remaining with what looks good fixture wise.. maybe!

Rule #1 to have a decent start - don't take too many GW1 punts. Go for the usual players you know will do well. Go for players who have already had a season or two in the league and monitor all the new acquisitions over the first few weeks. Too many punts will cause you to make too many transfers to get them out, whilst not being able to bring in the players you need.

If chasing, and the league is all you care about, how about benching Kane? He's not been going mad lately and has a tough game against City!

If he blanks and Ozil/Vardy does well, you could really close that gap!

Doesn't really matter if they win by one goal. 6-5 is winning by only one goal, but they've scored 6 goals. They scored over 1 goal in 1/3 of those games. With the last two Mourinho parking the bus against his closest rivals.

Since someone mentioned next season's opening fixture tactic, I thought I'd have a look at this seasons starting squad to see how it measures up to a team I'd pick today. I'm not that disappointed really. Players who flunked at the start of the season have actually picked up (Dzeko excepted)
