Team of the Season – Nathaniel Clyne

In the wake of Calum Chambers’ summer switch to Arsenal, Nathaniel Clyne enjoyed free reign of the right-back berth under new Southampton manager Ronald Koeman. The Crystal Palace youth product has since established himself as one of the most in-demand full-backs in the league and a top pick on the Fantasy scene.

The Statistics

After starting just 20 league matches in 2013/14 under Mauricio Pochettino, Clyne was afforded a 5.0 starting price in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

His Fantasy potential was manifest from the off, in light of a goal and assist within the opening trio of fixtures. Four bonus points and three clean sheets for Southampton in the first five Gameweeks bolstered his appeal and encouraged 630,000 mangers to invest in Clyne prior to Gameweek 6 – in turn causing his value to rise to 5.5. By the end of Gameweek 12, the Saints notched another four shut-outs and Clyne had grabbed his second goal of the campaign, boosting his value up to 5.8.

Notwithstanding Clyne’s paucity of attacking returns (one assist) from there on out, and the fact Southampton registered just six more clean sheets in the matches he started, the England international boasted a hefty 32.5% ownership on the eve of the final Gameweek – more than any defender. Ultimately, Clyne was subject to the highest price rise (0.9) of any Southampton player this term and the third-highest price rise of any player in the league.

Among Southampton’s full roster, only their top scorer, Graziano Pelle (149), recorded a higher total score than Clyne (142) throughout the course of the season. In terms of the league’s full complement of defenders, the Saints defender ranked joint-third (alongside Phil Jagielka) behind the high-powered Chelsea duo of John Terry (177) and Branislav Ivanovic (179).

Clyne’s points per game average (4.1) equalled Ryan Bertrand’s, with his output further aided by a stellar disciplinary record (only four yellow cards) and a decent collection of bonus points – only Jose Fonte (16) chalked up more than his team-mate (15) this term.

The Prospects

Clyne’s current contract at Southampton is due to expire next summer, casting doubt over his future at the Hampshire club amid interest from Manchester United and Chelsea. That being said, manager Ronald Koeman is optmistic that Clyne – who’s recently changed agents – will put pen to paper on a new deal:

“Still confident that he (Clyne) will sign a new contract but I think next week we will know about his situation.”

Even if Clyne elects to renew his contract, there’s the lingering fear that Southampton – given their lack of Champions League football – will lose a selection of their most-prized assets for the second year running, with the likes of midfield stalwart Morgan Schneiderlin already angling for a move away. Clearly, if Saints face another summer of extensive reshuffling, we’ll have to re-evaluate their worth from a Fantasy perspective.

Clyne is destined for a price hike off the back of his eye-catching season, with a cost of around 6.0 looking the likeliest scenario. In that price bracket, investors will expect a significant goal threat yet – despite an early-season flourish – Clyne was unspectacular in that regard, drawing blanks in all but one of his last 23 league starts.

Certainly, at that price, his popularity is bound to take a turn for the worse as we look to cheaper alternatives for our five-man backlines, with West Brom under Tony Pulis sure to be on many a shopping list.

The Saints’ goalkeeper situation is likely to be key to our assessment. With Fraser Forster expected to be sidelined for the first few months of the new campaign, it remains to be seen whether Koeman will dip into the market to strengthen between the posts. If the Saints boss keeps faith in his current back-ups options, one of Kelvin Davis or Paulo Gazzaniga could well be the favoured route into the Southampton backline until Forster is fit and available – both stoppers will certainly be cheaper than Koeman’s first-choice defenders.

Much could also depend on Toby Alderweireld’s situation. Southampton have the option to wrap up a transfer from Atletico Madrid but if the Belgian chooses to move elsewhere, the likes of Maya Yoshida could even come into contention at centre-half as a more budget-friendly option.

    Afternoon All,

    Just a quick one 🙄

I'm looking at adding another cash mini league to one I already run outside of ffs .
If any of you guys are interested the prizes are awarded as follows (based on 40 joining)
    1st stake x 13
    2nd stake x7.5
    3rd stake x 5
    4th stake x 4
    5th stake x3

total red and yellow cards in the season stake x 2.5
    highest £TV stake x 2.5
    highest number of assists(season) stake x 2.5

I've found the last 3 prizes really spice it up a bit. If anyone would be interested please could you let me know .

    Thanks

    Spat

I would have highest number of goals and CS before assists.

Maybe also a differential prize. Something along the lines of team with the lowest total % ownership at the end of season. Work out by multiplying all players' ownership as a decimal eg Kane and hazard both owned by 50% = 0.5 x 0.5. Lowest figure wins.

Cheers for the replies guys. As AZ points out the TV prize means you'd probably miss out on all the others so is a gamble. Our current buy in is £20 but I'd be happy to decrease/increase that depending on the level of interest. There's no massive rush so If people could express interest on this post I'll knock up a more indepth proposal/spreadsheet etc. and be in touch.

    *apologies, lost to last page*

If I was to set up a mini league next year, £5 buy in (paid through paypal), cap the number of entrants at 40 or so, and have 1st, 2nd and 3rd places winning 50%, 30% and 20% of the total pot - do you reckon people would be interested?

Or put off paying into a relatively unknown persons account?

Jonty has indicated FFS would be okay with this, and would endorse the league, just wondered peoples thoughts?

Goes without saying, but I am too big a FF nerd to consider ripping off similarly minded fans of the game!

hmm interesting thoughts, I personally would rather be involved in a smaller league with a bigger payout, mainly due to the high standard of entrants there are likely to be! (i.e 100 FFS members = no chance of winning 😛 )

to give people more of a chance of winning.

Could even run two different leagues side by side, but leagues which have 100/200 people are notoriously difficult to win, so may put people off?

then again this is just my own musings, so would be interested to see what people thought.

The only rule changes I'd like to see in FPL are:

More save points for Keepers and bonus points to reflect keepers that are making 7+ saves in a game.
Penalty conceded (-1 or -2 points)
Penalty won (+1 or +2 points)

FPL works because of its simplicity.

Fair point. Really like the idea of penalties won being given 1/2 and not 3 points as those lucky assists are often very annoying.

i really do think they need to have a look at penalties. fair enough youve won a penalty for the team, but its not really the same as setting up a goal with a pass or blocked shot is it?
I guess the problem is, what about winning a free kick.. would this still constitute as an assist?

if you curb winning frees and pens then you have to curb blocked shot assists too.

an assist is an assist, why can't winning a peno be as good as setting up a goal? sometimes the person who wins a peno would have been clear on goal and scored, so getting 3 points is only fair when they could have scored no?

But if the peno is missed you still get the 1pt instead of 0.

+3 for a scored pen and +1 for a missed pen? I could agree with that.

The guilty defender should also get a -1 if the pen is missed but -2 if it is scored?

The outcome of the penalty shouldn't have any effect. If a player wins a penalty, he's done his bit and should be rewarded - the rest is out of his hands

exactly. already the suggestions above are too complex and would ruin the game.

the question is make winning pens/free kicks an assist or not.

i think it is perfect how it is because winning a pen should be rewarded and looked upon like an assist, if the pen is missed then no assist. just like if a player makes a perfect through ball and the striker misses an open goal there is no assist.

yeah if people want more stat based games try Fantrax or even UFPL

the only issue with FPL is the defensive mid issues, and how pretty useless they are in the game, not really much can be done about and we have plenty of players to choice from anyway.

depends on who scores the goal

a striker gets 28 BPS for scoring, a keeper should get at least 20 for a peno save IMO

            *24

Not to mention they already get 5 points for the pen save (absolutely massive for a GK). It's basically equivalent to a midfield goal, and receives nearly identical BPS.

If anything I think pen saves are over-rewarded considering they bring an incredible amount of luck into the mix.

The only thing I think needs changing wrt GKs is changing it to 5 points for a CS, so that expensive GKs might actually justify their ludicrous price tags.

well yeah the +5 is a fair point

I disagree on them being over-rewarded because as I said, a pen save can be just as important as a goal. But there's still flaws IMO

Migs saves a peno is a 3-1 loss and gets a BAP

DDG saves a peno and makes a ridiculous double save in a 2-1 win and doesn't get any BAPs?

That doesn't seem right to me DDG's contribution in that Everton game was arguably more important than any other player's

With the news that FIFA 16 will include women's teams, I'm imagining career mode to be something like this....

Manager: "I heard you had a problem with settling in the country"
    Woman: "No, don't worry"
Manager: "In fact, I heard it directly from you in a press conference"
    Woman: "I'm fine"

this year I was around 26k, 2 years ago I was around 26k, in between I was 82k (so that's a bad year)

26k seems to be my norm since I came to FFS, but I intend to not be around next season (except possibly as a lurker) and rely a bit more on my own gut which rarely lets me down

      well i think ADM stays

all the comments from him indicate he wants to stay and there are no noises from OT that we're actively looking to sell

Copa America is a big problem for us as

      a) it robs him of a good solid pre season
      b) it robs us of the chance to use pre season to work out how best to use him

why do you consider playing Copa as not having a solid pre-season. Surely competitive games are a better way of getting into form than friendlies where no one really cares about winning.

I think leave due to his poor form from such a high price tag, and the personal issues he has had in Manchester.

he would be much better suited to PSG and will win silverware there

            ^this^

pre season is used not just to build fitness, but to play around with formations and try and integrate players without the pressure of competitive football

If pre-season isn't important as you seem to be suggesting then why do/did managers like Jose or SAF set so much in trying to get transfers done as early as possible?

Answer? So they have pre-season to integrate into the team

The issue is the players have a break AFTER the Copa America, then come back to effectively preseason just as the season is starting.

I'm avoiding Southampton (Massive price hikes) Tottenham and Liverpool (Europa league) next year.

Swansea and Everton will have some bargains in it for sure. I hope FPL doesnt price WBA defenders in a ridiculous way. Matt Ritchie of Bournemouth looks like next years Charlie Adam.

Matt Ritchie at 5-5.5 would make a great 5th mid. Worried his price may be too high though. But hey, he may turn out to be this years siggy or downing.

i reckon he'll come in at 5.5. Not basing that on anything however.

If Bournemouth have a decent first 5 though and he comes in at 6, he could be a decent 4th mid!

Don't see Swansea having too many defensive bargains as they were pretty solid this year.

      Maybe, Fabianski and/or N.Taylor at 5m.

Would love to see Everton players priced in a good range. 6m for Coleman would make it interesting!

        Naughton could potentially be 4.5

        I'd be interested in that

        Flappy will be 5.5 IMO

Keeper spend should be no more than 9.5 I feel, ideally less.

think he doesnt make many mistakes to take mini baps off, usually throws in a couple runs and crosses to help him.
usually the games he wins on are when other three are missing shots or headers getting blocked which brings their baps down

the3rdturd's tableau in hot topics is interesting. shows the split between left back, right back, left centre back and right centre back, it's pretty even so arguably fpl deserve a pat on the back for that.

in azpi's case it's likely to be tackles on top of a decent but not spectacular pass percentage

I don't know, he really wants a nice project club, CL, money to spend etc. But we have neither, all while the structure of the club needs to be addressed, and the playing staff shaken up, there's a lot more work than just that, and then factor in how difficult next season may be for us, it would take a real effort to build to club up to where it wants to be. Klopp will have a few options this summer, hopefully we go for him despite it all, Napoli and Fenerbahce will probably look to him, but I can't see him choosing them. My guess is a years sabbatical and he'll then look to some of the better jobs open next summer.

FAO Billy Gilmore, if you're still around I did some math on your "possible dead teams" question, above.

From a player list of 2gk/5def/5mid/3fwd (so, 14 players) and given FPL's rules (3 def or more, 1 fwd or more) there are:

    460 (possible starting XI's)
x 6 (possible bench configs for each)
    -----
    = 2,760 possible teams

The math is in the last post, but I'll post below.

er, not "above" but in the Scout Leagues Roundup post.

There are 2,760 possible FPL team sheets every GW with a static player pool of 11 + 4 bench (incl. keeper)

      Possible formations:
      gk + 5, 2, 3 = 2*1*10*1 = 20
      gk + 5, 3, 2 = 2*1*10*3 = 60
      gk + 5, 4, 1 = 2*1*5*3 = 30
... so, given a team of 15 FPL players, there are 110 possible starting XI's in a 5-defender formation

      gk + 4, 3, 3 = 2*5*10*1 = 100
      gk + 4, 4, 2 = 2*5*5*3 = 60
      gk + 4, 5, 1 = 2*5*1*3 = 30
... so, given the same team of 15 FPL players, there are 190 possible starting XI's in a 4-defender formation

      gk + 3, 5, 2 = 2*10*1*3 = 60
      gk + 3, 4, 3 = 2*10*5*1 =100
... and given the same team, again, of 15 FPL players, there are 160 possible starting XI's in a 3-defender formation

Whether you know it or not, your starting XI is actually just 1 of 460 possible teams at your disposal.
AND that doesn't account for your bench!
Since each formation leaves you 3 bench players, with 6 possible arrangements, multiply the total by 6.
There are 2,760 ways to arrange your team every GW.

      !!

Abel Hernandez will miss the first 3 games of Hull's Championship campaign after admitting a charge of violent conduct after punching Phil Jones in the stomach during the 0-0 draw with Man Utd

Should have punched him in the face to make it more worthwhile. Would probably have improved Phil Jones looks in the process as well.
