Team of the Season – David Silva

David Silva has always been a reliable performer on the Fantasy scene, yet before now the midfield magician lacked the end product to stand alongside his big-hitting peers. A return of 12 goals and as many assists this season put paid to that, placing him in the top four scorers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game courtesy of a career-best points haul.

The Statistics

Overshadowed by Yaya Toure’s 20-goal exploits in 2013/14, Silva began the season at a price of just 9.0, far more budget-friendly than the Ivorian’s lofty 11.0 valuation in the FPL game.

The Spaniard made a perfect start to 2014/15, netting in Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in Gameweek 1, but one goal in City’s eight subsequent match-ups, followed by a six-match injury lay-off, served to knock 0.2 off his starting value.

From Gameweek 17 onwards, Silva returned to firm, notching four goals and one assist in a trio of starts, which triggered an upsurge of investors and a 0.6 increase on his price tag. The Sky Blues chief orchestrator then delivered consistent attacking returns (six goals and nine assists) in the second half of the season, causing his value to rise to a peak of 9.9 in Gameweek 33.

Despite charting tenth with regards to ‘transfers in’ over the course of the season, Silva ended up with the joint-fourth highest total score (191) – alongside the much-vaunted Harry Kane – among the full roster of Premier League players.

Crucially, the former Valencia star enjoyed his most productive season in the final third, notching five more goals than his previous record (seven) last term. A dozen assists now means that Silva has recorded 49 assists across the past four campaigns, highlighting the consistency of his output from year to year – indeed, he’s registered at least 12 assists from 2011/12 onwards. These figures positioned Silva as the third-highest scoring midfielder, behind Alexis Sanchez (16 goals) and Eden Hazard (14), and the joint-second assist-maker, with only Cesc Fabregas (19) managing more.

Impressively, Silva also racked up more bonus points than in previous seasons – his tally of 28 was superior to team-mate Sergio Aguero (27) and bettered by only three players. The little Spaniard’s average of six points per game was inferior only to Aguero (6.5) and Hazard (6.1), despite the fact that, unlike the other two, he didn’t have spot-kick duties to bolster his potential.

The Prospects

Silva’s new-found clinical edge is a boost to Manuel Pellegrini and Fantasy managers alike for the season ahead. Bearing in mind he scored just 21 times in the four years prior to last term, his upturn in output suggests he is set to vie with Hazard and Sanchez for our attentions in the premium midfield bracket next time around.

The fact that Sanchez is set for Copa America duties with Chile this summer – thus potentially placing question marks over his pitch time at the very start of the season – may well affect how we assemble our initial squads and could prove pivotal to Silva’s popularity at the offset.

Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to move to a lone striker system for the final couple of months has also worked in Silva’s favour. With Aguero firing on all cylinders, the Spaniard’s constant source of creativity will be key to the Etihad side as they look to recapture the title. Certainly, with team-mates Jesus Navas, Samir Nasri and James Milner unable to match his output, and Yaya Toure possibly on his way out, Silva looks the prime choice in the centre of the park for a City side that topped the scoring charts for the fourth successive campaign last time out.

Ultimately, though, Silva’s prospects hinge on his ability to steer clear of injury. Whilst the likes of Hazard and Sanchez seem made of sterner stuff, the Spaniard’s propensity for picking up hamstring niggles have tended to frustrate Fantasy managers in years gone by. Having missed just six of City’s league matches last time out, though, there’s a hope that he can finally remain out of the treatment room and step up his claim for an automatic place in our five-man midfields in the upcoming campaign.

Hmm it's hard to say. If I had to guess I'd say he'll have a decent season but maybe not score as many as he did this campaign.

I could well be wrong though. He's not a great player and not on set pieces which is a slight put off.

BBC: "In an uncompromising interview with Swiss television station RTS on Saturday, Mr Blatter said he suspected the arrests were an attempt to 'interfere with the congress' at which he was re-elected. 'I am not certain, but it doesn't smell good,' he said."

        Wonderful.

          Other Blatterobilia:

"I am the President now, the President of everybody" (On his re-election for a fifth term in office).

"I'd say they should refrain from any sexual activities" (When asked if he foresaw any cultural problems for gay people during the World Cup in Qatar).

"They could, for example, have tighter shorts. Female players are pretty... and they already have some different rules to men, such as playing with a lighter ball. That decision was taken to create a more female aesthetic, so why not do it in fashion?" (Blatter on women's football, in 2004).

On the other hand, he has done a lot to improve football in developing areas of the world, particularly Africa. Some of this at the expense of the established comfort zone of football (Western Europe) which they don't like. Always two sides to the story.

There are no two sides to this story. Blatter has probably done less for football in developing countries than another in his position would have done. Unless you count enabling the Jack Warners of the world to line their pockets.

Milner would be good but 32.5 for Benteke wouldn't be good, he needs a team built around him and wouldn't be able to play alongside Sturridge. Also, he scores most of his goals from crosses and we hardly cross the ball

              • 10 Years
              9 years, 20 days ago

Yeah, I agree that I wouldn't pay £30m for him. In terms of Sturridge, I don't think you can refuse a striker because he wouldn't suit Sturridge. The chances of him playing every week are slim. And maybe you don't cross it, because there's no one there to cross it to? Get Moreno playing every week, and Clyne at RB and that would change.

          Icardi/Benteke:

          - Icardi is 22, Benteke is 24.
          - Icardi would cost 22m at 80k per week, Benteke 30m at 100k per week. (His release clause is 32.5m but lets keep it 30m to keep it easier for the calculations after)
          - Icardi has 20 goals + 4 assists, Benteke 13 goals + 2 assists. Icardi has a 75% pass accuracy with a 44% shot accuracy. Benteke has a 67% accuracy with a 45% shot accuracy. Icardi has a successful take on rate of 41%, Benteke 36%.

          Milner/Kovacic:

          - Milner is 29, Kovacic is 21.
          - Milner is a free agent with a signing on fee of 5m at 120k week. Kovacic would cost 18m at 80k a week.
          - Milner has 5 goals + 7 assists, Kovacic has 5 goals + 2 assists. Milner has a 79% pass accuracy and Kovacic 87%. Milner has 45 key passes with 52 chances created. Kovacic has 57 key passes and 59 chances created.

          Now the sums:

          Kovacic 18mil + 80k per week, and Icardi 22mil + 80k per week = 80mil.

          Benteke 30mil + 100k per week, And Milner 5mil + 120k = 90mil.

The point of this wasn't to show that Milner and Benteke are rubbish..no because they're good. It's to show the 'premier league proven' doesn't really exist and the PL players are overpriced and aren't as good as those abroad. Kovacic+Icardi are both younger than Milner+Benteke, would cost less and would bring more quality to any team than the latter.

It's time to start watching other leagues too lads! 😉

Fair enough. He'd be a steal at 22, still so young and being top scorer and all. Like Kovacic though, I don't think he's as good as some suggest

You have to take into account why Benteke's passing is so low - it's because of the amount of long aerial balls he about a 50% chance of winning and retaining possession.

Not fair to compare Milner and Kovacic. Milner hasn't been getting a chance to proe himself at City. Also, he's a winger while Kovacic's a CM.
As for the strikers, I still think Bentekke is better for PL. The boy's got a temper and I think would struggle against the big defs in PL. Bentekke's strength and height allows him to boss around defenders.

I think you're underestimating the wages of Kovacic and Icardi. I am sure they are aware of what every one else is getting and wouldn't settle on anything below that. Inter has a lower wage budget and I am not sure, but I assume they would be top earners at Inter, In PL, they would like to be as well and would demand higher. Considering that, I think Milner would be cheaper and with his experience and work rate could easily play a couple more seasons.

            🙄

Those numbers aren't comparable because they've been doing that in Serie A.

This is entirely the point of 'Premier League proven'. Just because people are doing it in Serie A, it doesn't mean they'll do it in the Prem. I don't really follow how you work out 'prem proven doesn't exist' because of that?

What's wrong with Serie A mate? There's a Serie A team in the CL final, none from the PL.

Many players have come from abroad and done it in the prem. The prem is a tough physical league which is why players sometimes struggle, but in terms of quality, it isn't all that at all and that's been shown by the mass exodus in European competitions. Premier league proven doesn't mean anything though. There are good players in the England and good players abroad. I'd sign players from either league but only based on quality and the ££. I much rather sign Icardi than Benteke for example, because Icardi is a better player. Or I much rather sign Dzeko than Destro for example, because Dzeko is a better player.

The CL argument is flawed. Yes, when Icardi plays Juve he will have a hard game. But it's more about the depth in the league. And the Prem has more of that, making it a more difficult league than Serie A. So the numbers game isn't fair.

I don't know much about Icardi & Kovacic. They may be better players. But I think at this point in time, Milner and Benteke would be better for Liverpool, who need a good season now - not in 2/3 seasons time.

The Premier League is a better standard overall than Serie A.

Look at Lamela's stats in that league and compare with his stats in the PL. Let me know the results.

Yeah, it's about the distribution of quality and not just about the 1 or two best teams that end up in the CL final. In the prem you have a lot more quality players spread around the mid-lower teams as well as the big boys, which means you have to be able to be on top form week-in week-out. Unlike Serie A / La Liga / Bundesliga.

Well it is hard to compare Serie A players to BPL players.

But all in all, price, age, quality etc. considered I think Icardi + Kovacic would be better. Milner would be nice but Benteke wouldn't suit us imo.

Also, wouldn't Milner be a free agent, because his contract has ran out?

that is nonsense from marcotti, whoever that is. Kovacic is already better than most PL midfielders. Most are stuck just watching English football, the quality of players in Serie A, La Liga and Bundesliga are far superior

serie A and bundesliga teams (apart from juve and bayern) have been well beaten by the english sides for a few years now. Borussia had a good couple of years and even in those seasons they lost at least 1 of their 2 games against arsenal

Seria A especially has been very disappointing apart from juve

Have you seen the midfielders in the Serie A, the attackers in La liga, or the defenders/keepers in Germany? In those categories, they are superior. Our teams as a whole are balanced (Germans the most) and the quality is spread out a bit more in England, but those leagues specialise in those positions.

Not sure about the 'specialization' of particular positions in particular leagues, in fact I'd say that the Bundesliga is more direct and less focused on defending. I feel like I've had this argument a lot, but I don't think the PL is as low on quality as people continually suggest. I suppose it's a predictable consequence of poor European performance for a year or two, and I do agree that the market for players is far more lucrative outside the PL, but the league is still stronger than Serie A, and probably the Bundesliga as well

I take your point mate but if our league is stronger than Serie A/Bundesliga, then how comes their teams progress more in Europe than ours? Because they're better

Well of course Bayern are better, they're one of the richest clubs in the world and have probably the best manager in the world. Outside of that? Wolfsburg were thrashed by Everton twice, and although they've had a much improved second half of the season I still think any of our top 4 would beat them.

Juventus success this year in the CL is clearly an anomaly for Italian sides, look at the last 5 years. And beyond Juve, there's not much, they won the league by a country mile (again). Napoli have a very good squad, and Lazio have a couple of brilliant players in Anderson and Candreva, but again I think any of our top 4 would beat them.

I feel like getting punty in the midfield next season:

        Hazard/Fabregas, Walcott/Ramsey, Mane, Bolasie, 4.5

Think that will be too pricey?

Walcott/Ramsey seem good options, Bolasie is a very good option imo, I think next season will be his break through. Mane also a good option but be wary of EL if Arsenal win tonight. Maybe JRod will be a better option.

15 players in total, first come, first served.

Rules: Pick one player from Aston Villa & one from Arsenal. This will be your two man team. Points awarded same as FPL.

Prize: As normal something truly worthwhile.

        I am the referee.

        @ Berbinho Forehead

        Lamela

        12/13 in Serie A: 15 goals in 33 apps

14/15 in Premier League: 2 goals in 33 apps (remember he's also no a couple of years nearer his peak)

I think you know where I am going with this. Case dismissed.

Was the first one that came to mind. Not that many players have move from Serie A to PL recently.

            Markovic

            2012/13 (Serie A): 7 goals in 19 apps
2014/15 (PL): 2 goals in 19 apps (remember he's now a couple of years nearer his peak)

Regardless, PL is better standard than EPL, apart from Juve.

For what it's worth I agree with you. Just for the sake of playing devil's advocate I pointed out the flaw in your argument... and whilst we're on that subject I don't recall Markovic ever playing in Serie A!

5 I would consider him. 5.5 I would think twice. For me he's competing with the likes of Albrighton and Phillips (assuming he goes to a PL club) and I'd prefer those two, depending on relative prices / fixtures of course
