Team of the Season – David Silva

David Silva has always been a reliable performer on the Fantasy scene, yet before now the midfield magician lacked the end product to stand alongside his big-hitting peers. A return of 12 goals and as many assists this season put paid to that, placing him in the top four scorers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game courtesy of a career-best points haul.

The Statistics

Overshadowed by Yaya Toure’s 20-goal exploits in 2013/14, Silva began the season at a price of just 9.0, far more budget-friendly than the Ivorian’s lofty 11.0 valuation in the FPL game.

The Spaniard made a perfect start to 2014/15, netting in Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in Gameweek 1, but one goal in City’s eight subsequent match-ups, followed by a six-match injury lay-off, served to knock 0.2 off his starting value.

From Gameweek 17 onwards, Silva returned to firm, notching four goals and one assist in a trio of starts, which triggered an upsurge of investors and a 0.6 increase on his price tag. The Sky Blues chief orchestrator then delivered consistent attacking returns (six goals and nine assists) in the second half of the season, causing his value to rise to a peak of 9.9 in Gameweek 33.

Despite charting tenth with regards to ‘transfers in’ over the course of the season, Silva ended up with the joint-fourth highest total score (191) – alongside the much-vaunted Harry Kane – among the full roster of Premier League players.

Crucially, the former Valencia star enjoyed his most productive season in the final third, notching five more goals than his previous record (seven) last term. A dozen assists now means that Silva has recorded 49 assists across the past four campaigns, highlighting the consistency of his output from year to year – indeed, he’s registered at least 12 assists from 2011/12 onwards. These figures positioned Silva as the third-highest scoring midfielder, behind Alexis Sanchez (16 goals) and Eden Hazard (14), and the joint-second assist-maker, with only Cesc Fabregas (19) managing more.

Impressively, Silva also racked up more bonus points than in previous seasons – his tally of 28 was superior to team-mate Sergio Aguero (27) and bettered by only three players. The little Spaniard’s average of six points per game was inferior only to Aguero (6.5) and Hazard (6.1), despite the fact that, unlike the other two, he didn’t have spot-kick duties to bolster his potential.

The Prospects

Silva’s new-found clinical edge is a boost to Manuel Pellegrini and Fantasy managers alike for the season ahead. Bearing in mind he scored just 21 times in the four years prior to last term, his upturn in output suggests he is set to vie with Hazard and Sanchez for our attentions in the premium midfield bracket next time around.

The fact that Sanchez is set for Copa America duties with Chile this summer – thus potentially placing question marks over his pitch time at the very start of the season – may well affect how we assemble our initial squads and could prove pivotal to Silva’s popularity at the offset.

Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to move to a lone striker system for the final couple of months has also worked in Silva’s favour. With Aguero firing on all cylinders, the Spaniard’s constant source of creativity will be key to the Etihad side as they look to recapture the title. Certainly, with team-mates Jesus Navas, Samir Nasri and James Milner unable to match his output, and Yaya Toure possibly on his way out, Silva looks the prime choice in the centre of the park for a City side that topped the scoring charts for the fourth successive campaign last time out.

Ultimately, though, Silva’s prospects hinge on his ability to steer clear of injury. Whilst the likes of Hazard and Sanchez seem made of sterner stuff, the Spaniard’s propensity for picking up hamstring niggles have tended to frustrate Fantasy managers in years gone by. Having missed just six of City’s league matches last time out, though, there’s a hope that he can finally remain out of the treatment room and step up his claim for an automatic place in our five-man midfields in the upcoming campaign.

    Manchester United "Janus" Appraisal

This is the draft for the United article, I would appreciate comments from United fans and/or those who know the club well. Thanks to those who already offered views and please skip over this if you don't want to read a long post.

There are expectations of big changes at Old Trafford this summer, Falcao is leaving and other players such as RVP, Di Maria and De Gea have less than certain futures. There will also doubtless be big transfers in and the addition of Memphis Depay is already confirmed.

Nevertheless this article will attempt to make an "as it stands" appraisal which can serve as a baseline from which to assess future changes. Where are United now after a season of the "Filoshofee"?

    MANCHESTER UNITED REVIEW

United finished the season with 1 win, 2 draws and 3 defeats in the last 6 games, actually worse than their "poor" start (2 wins, 2 draws, 2 defeats). After hitting 4th place in GW12 they remained in 3rd or 4th for the rest of the season. So it seems LVG stabilised the club after their 7th place in 2013/14 but did we really see the improvement he spoke about?

What is undeniable is that in the 2nd half of the season, United became a more settled team with players like Mata, Fellaini, Herrera and Young establishing themselves in the starting lineup. Defensively United weren't too bad - 37 goals conceded (similar to City and Arsenal) with 12 clean sheets distributed evenly - 6 in the first half of the season and 6 in the 2nd half.

In attack, United clearly fell short - RVP was poor (10 goals) and Falcao misfired while Rooney spent long periods playing in midfield. United scored 62 PL goals, quite a way behind City, Chelsea and Arsenal. So that's where they are now: stable but short of a title challenge. Fortunately for United fans the addition of Depay could really help in terms of goals, but more of that later.

    UNITED PLAYERS - DEFENCE

De Gea was the star performer here and his 19 save points and 3 BPs compare well with other premium GKs like Hart and Courtois. As a safe starter he should remain a good GK pick next season for those who don't mind spending their budget that way and as long as he stays at Old Trafford.

Apart from that, the United defence offered slim pickings, Smalling being the best option with 91 FPL points. However there were a long series of defender injuries at United and Smalling's 4.5 PPG (when playing 60 minutes+) suggest he could be a decent option if he can hold down a place in a settled defence next season. An interesting option could also be Valencia; he could easily be re-classified as a defender and if United's clean sheet points were added to his FPL score he'd have a very healthy 124 FPL points, comparable to what was achieved by Coleman, Lescott and Koscielny.

In addition, LVG has spoken about the need to add a midfield "enforcer" like Strootman and that could aid the United defence if it happens. The likes of Smalling and Valencia could therefore turn out to be better options than they look at first sight if they can nail regular starting positions.

    UNITED PLAYERS - MIDFIELD

This is harder to assess. With Chelsea and Arsenal we can have a good idea about what formation they will play next season, with City it's either 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-2-2. But with United it's really difficult to know as LVG has changed it around so much this season. This article assumes that it will be some variation of 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.

If we take the FPL also-rans first, Herrera, Young and Fellaini don't have much to separate them in terms of stats apart from Fellaini having the best average for shots in the box per game of all United midfielders and also the best shooting accuracy. If he gets to continue in what has virtually been a support striker role he could be great value at around 7.0 but whether he will get to do so in a revamped United is open to question.

Young and Herrera have little to separate them; both have better creativity numbers than Fellaini; Young appears to be marginally the more creative and Herrera to carry marginally the more goal threat. Herrera could improve to be a good FPL option next season but at a likely price of 7.5 again many managers would want to see the evidence first.

Carrick is obviously a key player for United pending transfers in but plays in the poorly rewarded DM role; Januzaj clearly has potential but looks unlikely to start regularly and may be loaned out.

THE BIG THREE - DEPAY, MATA, DI MARIA

Memphis Depay is a 21yo right winger/forward with explosive pace and he will probably be classified as a midfielder as Sanchez was this season. "He has pace, which has always been a feature of great United teams, and has been badly lacking this season at times." [Paul Scholes]

Depay looks an exciting FPL option if he's starting in a 4-3-3. He scored 25 goals in 36 Eredivisie and EL games this season and also scored the most goals from direct free-kicks in Europe's top 6 leagues (7 goals). A free-kick specialist is something United have been short of, as many have observed. Some will say that Eredivisie form is no guarantee, and that's true. Neither is it to be dismissed - Suarez went to Liverpool from that league and look how well he did. Price for Depay? Who knows, 8.0 maybe? He could be a very attractive option at that price level.

ADM and Mata are proven players and Mata has an outstanding FPL pedigree going back to his 212 FPL points with Chelsea in season 2012/13. He has very good creativity numbers, has the knack of timing runs into the box to score and has also been (along with De Gea) United's highest FPL scorer this season. He is also (currently) on penalties. But there are drawbacks.

The first is that he never really nailed a starting position under Van Gaal until the back end of the season, playing right attacking midfield. But that's Depay's position. Will Depay start on the bench? Will Mata move to the #10 role (displacing Fellaini maybe)? If United sign a top striker will Rooney play #10 making that position unavailable? I don't know the answers to these questions but I do know that FPL managers will probably not be able to go into the new season trusting that Mata is a nailed-on starter. That makes him hard to select.

The second drawback is the comparison with Di Maria. ADM's attacking stats in the season just gone dwarf those of Mata - both for creation and shooting - and were even better during his last season at Real Madrid (when he was generally thought of as a world class player). Ludo's article also showed that Di Maria has a PPG of 5.6 (60 minutes+) compared to 4.8 for Mata. If we make allowances for a difficult first season on and off the field and assume a settled Di Maria playing regularly he could really be FPL gold, especially as it's hard to see him being priced above 9.0.

    UNITED PLAYERS - STRIKER

Falcao gone, RVP in his last year of contract and apparently a fading force... It seems inconceivable that United won't buy a striker and, unlike Wenger at Arsenal, LVG will have no reluctance to spend the cash. Who it will be is unknown - there is talk of Cavani and personally I think Harry Kane could well end up at United sooner or later. Whoever comes in will merit serious consideration by FPL managers.

As it stands, there is really only Wayne Rooney to assess. Rooney is FPL royalty and has had a number of stellar seasons in the past. The season just gone was a write-off for FPL purposes, he spent so many games playing CM that analysing his performance is almost pointless. But he has continued to score goals when played upfront.

Where will he play next season? Well, assuming a CM/DM is brought in as LVG has prioritised then there's a good chance Rooney won't be playing there at least. So probably in the #9 or #10 role, depending on whether United also bring in a top striker. Rooney can do great things from either of those positions and as captain he's a guaranteed starter. At around 10.5 (maybe 10.0) he will certainly be a popular pick and one I'd have on my short list. He does have a tendency to start seasons slowly though so maybe he's one to wait a bit before bringing in, maybe when Costa gets his first injury?

    SUMMARY

United will improve next season, almost for sure. A front 3 of ADM-Rooney-Depay or those 3 playing behind someone like Cavani or Kane would really offer prospects of more goals. The addition of a midfield enforcer like Strootman (if fully recovered) could help the defence and the balance. They may also bring in a top CB.

In my personal opinion they will be Chelsea's most serious challengers for the PL title in 2015/16 and players like De Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Depay, Di Maria and Rooney will be very significant FPL options.

Just that I think Depay will score a lot of points irrespective of how United do next year. He has all the traits of a great points scorer. Won't be surprised if LVG sticks pens on him.

Valencia could be a decent FPL option as long as (i) United don't buy a first choice right back and (ii) he is correctly classed as a defender.

That's interesting, there are a lot of conflicting noises about ADM. Certainly if he leaves it will make the picture clearer. But I think if he stays he's one with great FPL potential because United surely won't keep a £60m player to bench him.

Well they did this season and thats because he doesn't fit the filoshofee at all. He dribbles too much and loses possession all too often. Would suit a PL team who are more direct imo. Also there are reasonable grounds to let him go and reasonable excuses as to why he didn't succeed. This will help United recoup a lot of the 60m and hopefully PSG will come to the party.
