Scout Report – Memphis Depay

Early last month, Manchester United kick-started their spending spree for the season ahead by finalising a £22m deal for Dutch sensation Memphis Depay. The former PSV Eindhoven winger knocked back the attentions of Paris Saint Germain and Liverpool to sign a four-year deal at Old Trafford and revealed that the chance to reunite with Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal was too good an opportunity to turn down:

“I know the trainer (Van Gaal) very well. We have a good relationship. It was a little difficult with all the speculation about my future, but now I’ve chosen to sign for Manchester United and my dream came true. It shows that I’ve grown up as a player.”

Depay’s recent goal scoring exploits in the Eredivisie have placed a weight of expectation on his young shoulders, even drawing comparisons with the inimitable Cristiano Ronaldo. Although Van Gaal is excited by the new recruit’s potential, he stressed that the 21-year-old Depay will need time to acclimatise to the unique rigours of the Premier League:

“Youth is very important to this club and is a very big part of my philosophy as a manager. We have a number of young players in our first-team squad who have benefitted from experiencing first-team football this season and that will help their development going into next season. Memphis Depay [is] a young player who has come through the PSV Eindhoven academy system. I worked with Memphis during last summer’s World Cup with the Netherlands and he has great potential. The plan is to help him develop as a player, but we must all be patient. The Premier League is very different from any other league and it will take time for him to fully adapt to the pace and unforgiving nature of football in this country.”

The History

A precocious talent, Depay started in the youth system of hometown club Moordrecht before rising through the ranks at Sparta Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven. The winger sharpened his skills in PSV’s reserve team until 2011, at which point he earned his first team debut during an 8-0 thrashing of VVSB in a KNVB Cup fixture.

Depay logged ten further appearances in all competitions that season, netting five goals in the process. Despite being rewarded with an increased role in the following campaign, the Netherlands international could only muster three strikes in 30 outings, chalking up just two in the Eredvisie. The 2013/14 season marked Depay’s true breakthrough, harvesting 12 goals in 32 league fixtures and establishing him as potent threat from the left flank.

Depay sustained this momentum through the summer and netted twice during Oranje‘s entertaining World Cup run. His powerful running and penchant for fierce long-range shots inevitably caught the eye of a host of suitors, with United hotly tipped to snap up the youngster even at that stage.

In his most recent season with PSV, set-piece specialist Depay became the second-youngest player to receive the Golden Boot accolade in the Eredivisie, topping the scoring charts with 22 league goals; iconic Brazilian forward Ronaldo still holds that particular record, after he tallied 30 goals in his debut season for the club. Depay left a fitting parting note to his former employers, rifling home a 30-yard free kick during his swansong match – the seventh time he netted from a dead-ball situation last term.

In total, Depay racked up 50 goals and 29 assists over 124 matches for the Dutch outfit. On the international stage, he netted 14 times in 31 outings at youth level for Holland and has also scored twice in 15 appearances for the senior side.

The Prospects

As we saw last season with Van Gaal, reputation counts for little when constructing a starting XI. Angel di Maria arrived at Old Trafford for almost £60 million but quickly became a peripheral figure, whilst Radamel Falcao was marginalised in a season-long loan spell that harvested just four goals for the Colombian.

In the back-end of last season, Van Gaal finally discovered the midfield balance and fluidity he’d be striving for throughout the campaign. A 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur arguably presented the Dutchman’s 4-3-3 set-up in the best light and, from that point on, Juan Mata and Ashley Young flourished on the flanks, with the former bagging four goals in his next seven starts and the latter tallying five assists in eight.

Crucially, though, Depay’s arrival affords United a much-needed injection of speed in the final third. Having thrived on the left of a front three at PSV – cutting inside onto his favoured right foot – his acquisition certainly places major question marks over Young’s security of starts for the season ahead. He also offers an option through the centre if Van Gaal opts for a 3-4-1-2 formation, though it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils boss will return to such a system, having settled on a four-man backline in the final few months of the previous campaign.

Depay’s eye for goal also bolsters his Fantasy appeal. The youngster fired an eye-catching 162 attempts over 30 appearances last season – Alexis Sanchez was the highest in the Premier League with 121 – with an average of 5.4 shots per appearance indicative of his willingness to fire efforts from long-range. Given that Young produced 29 attempts in 26 appearances, the new boy will certainly boost his side’s prospects as Van Gaal looks to improve upon a record that saw United score just 62 times in the previous campaign.

Whilst Van Gaal’s above-mentioned quotes suggest that Depay will be eased gradually into first-team contention, the fact that he has already worked under his new manager is a major advantage. Dutch journalist Thijs Slegers revealed that in a recent interview, the youngster confessed he was a fan of Van Gaal’s no-nonsense approach:

“Last year Memphis gave an interview with me during a tough time for PSV and I said ‘what’s the problem here?’ He said ‘our coach needs to be tougher with us’ which caused a few problems when the coach read it. Van Gaal is tough and that’s what Memphis needs at the moment. Van Gaal is always looking for players to model into his own insight. What he sees in Memphis is a player that wants to learn from him and Memphis likes the way Van Gaal works.”

Ironically, Depay’s arrival comes at a time when United’s midfield had finally started to offer Fantasy managers viable options in the centre of the park. Mata and Young aside, the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera also picked up the points in the final few months of 2014/15. Indeed, having notched nine times last term, Mata – who is also United’s new spot-kick taker – could more than rival Depay as a Fantasy prospect, providing he can retain his role on the right of the front three.

Likely to come in around 8.5 – 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), it remains to be seen whether the new boy can immediately rise to the top of the United pecking order and cement a place in our Fantasy plans for the campaign ahead. Above all, Depay’s classification across the games will be pivotal to his appeal.

There’s no doubt that his arrival could see the likes of Adnan Januzaj pushed further down the pecking order, whilst rumours of a switch to PSG could see Di Maria exit the picture, too. United’s pre-season should help clarify matters, though Van Gaal will certainly be keen to utilise the strength and depth of his squad this time around after cementing a return to the European arena with a fourth place finish in his first season at the helm.

I'm not sure on nailed-on-ness, just because I think he wants to play centrally, and we've already got Hendo and Can there, it all depends on how the Brodge sets it up though. It's a wait and see for me personally, I won't be getting any Liverpool players early myself.

Milner will be nailed on 100% no doubt. Agree though, I won't be getting Liverpool players early. Still prefer Siggy as my 4th mid.

That's a bit worrying, would prefer Can and Hendo there myself, with either Lucas or another DM covering the back four. :/

Milner - Can - Henderson is a very hard working midfield with quality. I still want to see a DM signed and top striker being signed.

Yeah, the thing is though is that it would have to be 2 of those 3 and a top DM to get the best out of it, those 3 don't do enough to be the real steely out and out DM we need.

I agree to an extent but if we upgrade Skrtel then there would be less impotence on a DM (to an extent). Milner could play wide right and left too but he'll start the season centrally.

I think DMs are so necessary in big games, having one could be massive for us, we're far too frail not to in my opinion.

Agreed. Would sign a DM 100% this summer, Brenda disregards them though.

I know :'( Interested in Kovacic too, we bid and all so I heard, won't happen anyway but Brendan staying will no doubt push Lucas out the door, essential we get one but probably won't.

i.e. Kovacic is in no way shape or form what we actually need.

I wouldn't sell Lucas unless we sign a DM. A lot of our fans disregard Lucas but he gets the job done. I'd still upgrade him. then maybe move him on.

                        Kovacic..I don't think that'll be happening unfortunately.

That is true, I think its a strange one personally, he's a good player with a lot of experience and drive, immense engine on him too, it's just I don't know why we signed him, he wouldn't be much if any of an improvement on what we have and we already have a lot so he arguably wasn't needed. That's just my opinion mind, its all pretty strange to me. :/

One of the reasons he is leaving City is playing time so would be surprised if he hasn't already been guaranteed by Liverpool to be a regular starter.

Yeah he got plenty of playing time for City last season id agree. Didnt realise he had that many appearances though. I could be completely wrong but maybe if he knows the type of targets City are looking for in this transfer window then maybe he might think his playing time will reduce next season?

Hopefully but the likes of Pogba and KDB will be challenging to acquire. Would be some additions. I also wonder is that part of the reason for Toure staying? He was quoted as saying that because of the transfers being considered he will stay for another season. Hopefully it will be a good transfer window.

Most of the exams we do are just memory tests and require to revise the mark scheme for some subjects. It's a pretty poor measure of intelligence.

Forget one thing and in most subjects you'll probably fail. You don't 'learn' anything these days, just told to remember things.

The talk is over with. I am now looking to gauge interest for my 'High Rollers' cash league.

The cost of entry will be £100.00. Payments must be made by PayPal and the prize will be paid to the winners by PayPal.

There will be a maximum of 15 entrants.

    2 places are paid.

    1st place 70%
    2nd place 20%

And 10% will be donated to Melanoma UK in memory of Simon Humber.

If you are interested, simply drop me an email stating your FFS username and I will add you to the interested list.

    epic.fail.ffs@mail.com

If there turns out to be more than 15 people interested, entry will be a first come first serve basis and I will contact people in the order that I received their emails until I have 15.

Once FPL opens I will start the process.

Any questions or ideas for changes to the format, let me know.

As nice as that is, I think there needs to be a big incentive for the winner.

However, I have other plans which I'm confident will bring in a lot of money for charity over the season.

Sneak peak? Basically a weekly cash game. £1 entry. Unlimited entrants. Must have a FPL history of 2+ seasons.

Yohan Cabaye rumoured to be on for reunion with Pardew at Palace...Yes please !!

Quote from Cabaye on his general status

“It’s a peculiar moment in my career. I have never experienced this.

I have to accept it but also try to change it. It’s super important for me, I want to play at the Euro. I have to speak to the national team coach about my future and to my representatives to see what is best for me.”

Surely not, Cabaye is too good for Palace. Sounds like there's a decent chance of him leaving PSG but the Pardew link must be lazy 'journalism'.

      1. Dr Dream
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 15 days ago

Could be...although he'd have to give consideration to playing for somebody for who he would be nailed on to start. Pardew fits that bill.

But that may be his problem...he "could" be...It depends how he feels about it but he may well be a bit shy about it happening again. He's very highly regarded by the prem so he may seek safety to ensure his career gets the kick start it deserves again.

The mistake he made was going to mega rich PSG. Unless you're an elite player there's always a risk of being on the bench at a club like that. There's a lot of clubs inbetween Palace and PSG in terms of size/quality where he would be a safe starter.

He's exactly the right player. He was miles ahead of any other player for through balls when he left due to the way he and Remy played. The pace of the Palace boys would mean he would be a perfect fit for that exact same game again.

I read someone saying Wenger may have the edge because he's been keen on him for a long time, and has failed before in trying to sign him. Though I don't know, up to the player I suppose.

I think long term 2 strikers and another CB could go in there, after that possibly another attacking player. This summer I'd go for a GK (if DDG leaves), CB, RB, DM, and a Striker.

Depay(from the very little ive seen) mata shaw smalling rojo are simply not good enough to be in the starting team of premoer league winning side

Smalling was playing superbly in the latter half of the season. I genuinely think he will become a top CB soon. LvG handing him the armband was a sign of faith too.

I think you're being hard on Mata and Depay tbh. Rojo and Shaw may be ousted by Blind and a new CB.

Toward the end of the season they spanked Spurs, Liverpool, Villa, City, and did well against Chelsea. I think that's a positive sign of improvement and strong base to build from.

They also got battered by Everton and lost at home to West Brom 😉

They played well for a brief run of games towards the end but most of the season was unconvincing. Don't get me wrong, it looks like a top 4 team but Utd have the resources for more and I don't see how that competes with the very best. Still, plenty of time for surprises in the transfer market.

That's why a Carrick back-up is so badly needed. They crumbled without him. Schneiderlin or Sweinsteiger would be awesome, and Carrick could even be pushed up a spot to accommodate them.

With that line-up, I think I'd consider switching Mata's and AdM's positions tbh. Feel AdM's pace and crossing is better used on the wings where his ability to open up the game is more effective, whereas, I've always found Mata has played better in a central position where his creativity and vision is better placed. Also, played in a central position makes his (lack of) pace less of an issue, contrast to the wing where more emphasis on defensive contribution and speed is put.

Though alot depends on what formation LvG goes with, IMO.

True, but if you're also in the Depay camp, pretty sure he notched the most turnovers in the Eredivisie last season Ryan. Think in most cases, players (traditionally #10's and more so wingers), are the best dribblers and players with the mist flair on their respective teams. I think it's expected that they'll turn the ball over (Alexis is a good example) with the amount of times they'll take an opponent on.

Or are you saying that his loss of possession comes more from his sloppy passing?

Passing and dribbling is the issue. I don't know much about Depay but it wouldn't surprise me to see him not break into the team straight away. ADM needs to be a goal scorer to make up for the amount of times he loses possession.

I don't know to be honest, what strikes me as strange is Can and Hendo should be first choice in midfield with a DM, that's my opinion, Milner wants to play there but clearly has guarantees of playing time, a decent signing, with a lot of utility but wasn't really needed per se. I think Couts is best served centrally pulling all the strings, I'm sure Lallana can do that too. But for me I've lost faith in Rodgers so I'm not sure to what to make of us tactically. It's a wait and see for me.

Indeed, a real worker and has some great versatility, I just think its odd because he just wasn't really needed, nor is he a player you snatch up if he's available because he's that good. For me he's just a decent option for us. I can't fathom it personally, I guess we'll see how we line up preseason.

Its not that, for me he just wasn't needed, positionally. Just because we have a lot of players that occupy the position he plays, as a player I don't see him as a major improvement on what we have so it just strikes me as strange, I think Kolo should play more too. :O Mind I think Skrtel and Allen should be on the outgoings list too so perhaps there is space for him.

Yeah I agree, Coutinho has been one of the most consistent "hole" players in the PL the second half of the season or so, IMO. Definitely the best Liverpool have and I just can't see Hendo being used as effectively with that much offensive lumber. He'll likely be the best CM they have by next season (with their current team), and his long passing and vision in the midfield will be needed IMO (not to mention his solid defense).

I agree with you about the squad

lots of talk about how last season was our only chance. But look at our squad, a lot of talent and potential. We have one of the youngest teams in the league, compare that to say City.

gotta give BR some credit, Ibe has been fantastic and he did invest heavily in youth, always been good at brining young players up. it's more his choice of tactics this season that have confused me and his inability to adapt and change

        2. djenzio
          • 10 Years

I think we need someone like Milner who has experience. Hendo is fast becoming a great player but he is still pretty young. Milner should help him improve even more now that Gerrad is gone.

Can could easily play in defence again if BR goes back to three at the back, or maybe play Can in the DM role (?)

Really would be a shame to let Lucas go, very underrated player and has always been solid for us.

I can see why we went for him because he was free (apart from wages of course) but I it's not a position we needed. perhaps the offer was too good to not take?

Coutinho is much better suited to the no.10 role than out wide, he needs to score more. I would like 10/15 goals a season from a no.10 myself.

It is vital we get a new striker or two, a proven goalscorer

Yeah, I think Can would be completely wasted in defense though, he's at his best as a CM, more box to box player, strong all round. Milner would have had a signing on fee which would have cost a bit mind. Our academy is in great shape too, the problem is Rodgers doesn't bring them in, he doesn't trust them, he's only given Sterling, Ibe and Flanno squad places, and even then he only brought in Sterling and Flanno due to injuries at the time. Unfortunately for the likes of Teixeira or Rossiter a cameo or two is all they've got and nothing more when they need a run of games in the side. Its terrible he gets credit for promoting youth when all he does is stifle it realistically. :/

I thought he was responsible for investing a lot in the youth system but I could be wrong.

Would love to see more of Teixerira

Really love Can, he was our best signing last season. And he is only 21. He played well in defence but would love to see him in his favoured position, that's why the Milner signing is odd because it means Can will most likely not get to play CM or he will share duties with Milner.

Pretty safe to assume Hendo is first name on the team sheet each week and I don't any reason why Milner would get pens from him as some people have suggested on here

I think most youth signings happen regardless of the manager to be honest. I agree though, Milner is a good signing and will have an impact I'm sure, I don't think he was needed though, the worry for me is as you say Can could be losing out on a better position because of it.

yeah, the positive side is Can has someone with experience to learn from and hopefully will at least play more as a CM even if he is not nailed on there.

Milner is a beast of a player can see him playing most games though, guess he can play on the wing too.

I really don't know, hopefully find out in pre season

Aye, Milner is a great addition for you guys. A good versatile player like him is needed for any team, and even though Can can fulfill multiple roles, Milner definitely has the more well rounded midfielder attributes. It seems BR was opting for the 433 towards the closing moments of the season (ironically coinciding with their bad run of form), I think a good DM like Lucas as anchor with Hendo + Milner on the outskirts could be a quality 3-man midfield.

I sincerly hope you guys go back to 3 at the back, it did wonders for you mid season campaign and it really brought out the best of all your players tbh. It made some crucial parings on all three fronts, brought out the best in Sakho and Skrtel, and let Can shine out wide with his great ability on the ball and to distribute from out back. In that system, a player like him or a Pique, are essential for building up plays.

Lucas is one of the best pure DM's in the PL for sure, may not have that creative touch as others, but his defense is superb. Unless you guys buy another DM, I can't see any logical reason as to why he should go, Allen definitely won't cut it (not yet at least) and a bare Milner + Hendo midfield is as naked as it gets, that's not their forte by any means as w/ no anchor, it'll certainly hinder Hendo as an outlet at least.

Not to sound cliche, but I think he and Sterling are improving every day. Many have critiqued both of their woes when it comes to finishing, but more importantly they're still getting in those critical goal scoring positions (more so for Sterling), and both make great runs of the ball. You really can't train that as much as shooting technique IMO, Sterling's technique has left much to be desired, I'm sure a good training during the summer will better his finishing prospects (same for Cout). If he can show as much as improvement like Silva did this year, then he may very well become one of the best forwards in England, IMO. You really can't stress a strikers positioning enough.

For sure, though hopefully Sturridge's surgery in the U.S ill do him some long term good like it has been implied. A good target striker would't hurt though 😉

I'd love Higuain, some saying he'd only just be a possibility, I hope we don't get Ings, he'd just be a squad player, and we've had enough of those in the past. The problem for me isn't the players though, some need to move on but the squad is in good nick, just needs confidence and some cohesion. But for me the obvious problems elsewhere needed to be addressed.

I agree there, Higuain would be a great buy, would fit perfectly in the 3421. Not sure why so many are into Ings either, as a lone striker, I doubt he'd be as effective. Too small, weak, and would surely need a complimentary partner like he has at Burnley.

Personally I think we need to go 4 at the back though, the defenders prefer it, it works and the team is better balanced, I think because the Brodge dropped the pressing system he adopted a more defensive system to replace it, in the game against United it was so easy for them to knock the ball up to Fellaini down the left time and time again, making it especially easy for them to press us into our own half. Awful system if you ask me. :/

wonder if Liverpool and BR will consider him. Even if Lucas stays we should still get him. make a lot more sense to buy him than Milner.

I think he'd want CL, I don't think we're interested in a DM either, I'm not sure how it'll pan out, I think right now the club aren't looking to sell Lucas but then again BR doesn't seem keen on him either so he may just be on the bench a lot.

there is no one else to play instead of Lucas unless he doesnt play a DM and puts Allen there or something....

I know, Allen really doesn't offer anything that I know of, doesn't fit our system, and is the lowest in the pecking order. I think its best for all parties if he moves on, but as you say BR is fond of him. :/

Maybe more so Carrick, he's getting on now, so there could be some rotation there early on, but long term Schneiderlin would be the go to guy. I think you should rid yourselves of Fellaini, he's a thug who just fits in with an anti football system in my opinion.

If it works it works. I don't care if he's a thug or not, if it gets wins I'm happy. Carrick is the most nailed on player in the team though and he won't go anywhere, we need him.

I was hoping fallout 4 was going to be set in somewhere like utah, much prefer the desert as backdrop to endless cityscape. Did you play all the downloable content? I really liked the lonely hearts one, but that science one, left me cold. And with fallout 4 set in Boston am worried it going to be more like old world blues

Aye, I actually really like the setting in Las Vegas and the endless search for Deathclaws in the dessert (thanks to the great soundtrack). But I really think this being set in a city will do it wonders, I can't speak about the add-ons though (only played the Dead Money DLC and thoroughly enjoyed it).

One set back is that it seems they're still using Fallout 3's engine, graphics are definitely lacking, but nobody plays Bethesda games for the graphics anyway 😉

Too brilliant. tbh can't believe he went with a non-UCL team. Means he really wants guaranteed first team football.

What's more appealing his best years may well be ahed of im. I remember Robert Pires came to Arsenal at the age of 28, had a terrible 1st season, and then went to have a brilliant second and ended up being our Legend. I can actually see Milner doing the same.

We'll that's my point. Their defence is terrible yet they finished 5th. I know what they should be targeting in the window. Imagine how bad it would have been without Lloris (please tell me you didn't just compare Rob green and Hugo lloris;)

Yep, defence is terrible and they ere helped by overachieving Kane's goals. The team was too reliant on him.

Who should they target? I think the likes of Vert, Walker and Rose are good enough, just the system need to effective. Maybe they lack a Morgan Schneiderlin (or whatever his name), a Claude Makelele type player to shield the back 4.

Yes, I compared them both based on individual performance. Safe to say Green had a better season 😀

Thing is vert, walker and rose are good players individually. All can be liabilities in their way though and having them all in one defensive line is madness. I suppose a quality cb and proper defensive midfielder would help cover their defensive liabilities while still benefiting from their attacking prowess.

A good player can look shite in a terrible system. And an average Defender can look like a warrior in a working system. Ask Ron Vlaar. Heck even O'Shea looks like a quality CB towards the end of season.

I think Skrtel may fit the bill for them. And someone better than their ex-player Sandro, obviously.

Yeah, team is as solid as the Invincibles. Problem still lies on the goalscoring department. We still lack a 20 goals a season striker a la Henry. Unless Sanchez plays as a striekr and Walcott stays fit we will struggle to score against the top side.

I reckon Jackson Martinez or lacazette could be the final piece tbh and both should be gettable. Vidal also is world class and at the top of his game though a striker probably more important

Jackson is an interesting prospect. Wondering why he's still at Porto. But tbh I'd prefer Griezmann 😉

Vidal is world class, but I'd prefer to give another season for Coquelin as a starter.

Yeah good call on griezmann. Though lacazette is a perfect Wenger player.
No reason coq couldn't start behind Ramsey and Vidal when a bit of steel is needed. Still one top notch striker should be the priority. I rate giroud and he's been great but not enough if you wanna take the final step up to challenge for English and Euro honours again

Do I sense a feeling that United can challenge for the title next season?

Not really. We are an outside chance at best and United fans should understand that.

A long way off city and arsenal atm. Future looks good for the first time in a long time for your lot though.

If City sell Aguero then I think they will be there for the taking. If we bring in a strong striker like Benzema then I think we'll challenge Arsenal for 2nd

So if city sell one of the world's best strikers AND United buy one of the worlds best strikers 😛
If Chelsea sell hazard and Liverpool buy messi it will be back to the glory days 🙂

RM want Aguero and Benzema will need to make way. The logic is there. Although it'd give City a financial boost to buy of course. I do believe Aguero is like Suarez for Citeh and his loss would be massive.

I think next season will be about the team getting it right, finding some balance and cohesion, they should keep with the pack but I think through the whole season a realistic challenge may be out of reach, a season too soon perhaps?

Probably. We are still rebuilding. Top 3 should be the aim though

So advocaat put his foot down with the boss 🙂 hope they don't put pva up to 5. Will put him in silly territory like janmaat last year

Yeah 5m would be a stupid price. Limits need to be applied to teams likely to be in a relegation fight.

I want pva and janmaat to be the first names on my team sheet. I'm worried they'll both be 5 🙁

Probably. Promoted teams at least shouldn't have defenders who are 5-5.5m

          PVA unlikely to be 5

go to fpl stats page and rank sunderland team on points per game PVA is only 3.00 and as he finished this season priced at 4.1 he should be no more than 4.5

Reminds me of the parliamentary bills they were talking about the other day. The patriot act and the USA freedom act 😆 now that's the way to market mass surveillance 😉
