Team of the Season – Harry Kane

It’s fair to say that Harry Kane’s rapid and unforeseen rise to prominence was a sight to behold for Fantasy managers. Initially pitched at a 5.0 price point in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, the youngster evolved into a lethal marksman under Mauricio Pochettino, affording us extraordinary value in a quite remarkable breakthrough campaign.

The Statistics

Kane had to settle for cameo roles in the first 10 Gameweeks of the season, with manager Mauricio Pochettino preferring Emmanuel Adebayor in the lone striker berth. After netting seven goals in six Europa League ties, Kane emerged from the bench to fire a late winner in Spurs’ 2-1 win over Aston Villa in early November, establishing himself as a permanent fixture in Pochettino’s first-team from that point onwards.

The Walthamstow lad took time to generate momentum, though- having dropped to 4.8 in FPL, he notched just one goal and an assist in his first five starts as he slowly found his feet in the top-flight. Then the fireworks begun, sparking a run of 15 starts in which Kane recorded just three blanks and tallied 17 goals and 14 assists. This astonishing burst of form brought about a meteoric rise in value to 6.4 by Gameweek 31, with the greatest volume of new owners (nearly 550,000) hitching a ride on the bandwagon in the wake of his 18-point haul against Chelsea on New Years’ Day – a match which, ironically, many owners benched him for.

Kane’s only real downturn in form arrived in the final quarter of the campaign, in which he mustered just two goals and one assist in the final eight Gameweeks as the hectic schedule started to take its toll. Despite shedding over 200,000 owners in the final five rounds of fixtures, Kane still ended the season with the highest ownership (45%) of any player in the FPL game, by virtue of his unparalleled output per unit investment.

In his first Premier League campaign as a starter, Kane finished second in the scoring charts (21 goals), behind Sergio Aguero’s 26. In addition, a total of 191 points saw him end up joint-fourth alongside David Silva, with only Aguero bettering his score amongst forwards. In the Spurs camp, Christian Eriksen (162) came closest to the English international’s tally, with Nacer Chadli (160) pushing the Dane in bronze medal position.

Averaging 5.6 points per appearance, Kane led the league with regards to appearances in the FPL Dream Team (seven) – a feat no doubt aided by his five braces and hat-trick, giving rise to seven 10+ points hauls. Moreover, only Hazard (42) was awarded more bonus points than Kane (32) throughout the season –again, all the more impressive given he failed to start a match until Gameweek 11.

The Prospects

Although the curtains have been drawn on the domestic campaign, Kane can’t afford to reflect on his recent successes just yet. Following Spurs’ pair of post-season friendlies against Malaysia XI and Sydney FC, the burgeoning star is set to participate in the European Under 21 Championship, which takes place in the Czech Republic. The tournament is scheduled between June 17–30, which could disrupt Kane’s pre-season preparations if the Three Lions progress to the latter stages. Pochettino recently suggested his first-choice frontman could miss the start of next term if such an event transpires, given that he’ll need to be afforded ample rest after featuring in 51 league and cup matches in 2014/15.

In light of last season’s exploits, it goes without saying that Kane’s value is set to rise substantially across the Fantasy games. Certainly, it seems debatable as to whether he’ll be elevated into the premium bracket after less than a year as a starter for Spurs, though there’d be no surprise if he comes in around 8.5 to 9.5 in FPL when the Player Price Lists are issued next month.

Nonetheless, bearing in mind that Kane averaged 6.3 points per start last season, Fantasy managers will remain confident he can still represent strong value. Even with a price hike on the horizon, Kane’s fixture-proof appeal, allied with spot-kick duties and consistency of returns (producing points in 16 of his 28 starts) will still make him a must-have for many, providing he doesn’t succumb to burn-out after such a hectic breakout season.

Certainly, with the inconsistent Eriksen managing a goal and two assists in the final 15 Gameweeks and Chadli still seemingly prone to his manager’s rotational whims, Kane will surely remain the most popular option at White Hart Lane for the campaign ahead.

Good for Sunderland that Advocaat is staying now.

Not a great Sunderland fan but his passion when Sunderland secured the points needed to stay up was what football is all about. Much respect to him.

They should be safe next season with him there.

Is Illarramendi still alive? He cost them around £25m. Illarramendi, Casemiro, Lucas Silva, Modric, Kroos, Khedira's still there, and Verratti? All fighting for 2 places.

Khedira has gone to Juve. They wanted to sell Illarramendi but with Benitez there now who knows. They have three CM(Kroos, Modric and Illarramendi) and two DM. They're always buying as many players as they can, they collect them and then sell them at lower prices to clubs that actually need them.

100%. Destroyed Sahin and will destroy a lot of those younger guys that they buy up.

Has taken a long time for Sahin to regain the right attitude at Dortmund, and you saw how quickly he fell out with people at Pool when he was still Real's player.

Being the marquee signing is just as problematic - look at the stick Bale gets simply for not being Ronaldo. The fans have unattainable expectations, and don't exactly provide support if you struggle. I just think it's a toxic club.

I just meant at least you would play. But I agree, completely. Utterly toxic with some really rotten fans. It's why I wonder what De Gea is thinking, going there and if he has a shaky introduction they will be all over him.

          It's on BBC now:

Real Madrid have agreed a deal with PSG's 22-year-old midfielder Marco Verratti, according to Sky Italia.

Although the Spanish club have not arranged a fee with PSG, who are expected to want more than 50m euros (£36.7m

          1. Camp No No

His agent says, however, that he has not been in any contact with Real Madrid and explicitly labeled this rumour as false.

            http://rmcsport.bfmtv.com/football/psg-l-agent-de-verratti-dement-toute-rencontre-avec-le-real-madrid-892344.html

            So, it probably is false.

Even if this was true, I doubt that PSG would accept to sell him. Al-Khelaïfi, who runs the club, said just couple of weeks ago that Verratti is nontransferable. Seen that Motta does not re-sign his contract but will leave for free, PSG would be left with just 3 midfielders: Cabaye-Rabiot-Matuidi still looks very good, but there's no one on bench then and they're not going to be able to play 4 competitions all season with just 3 midfielders. The bid is rumoured to be €60M, so maybe they'd use that to buy Pogba, though?

If they do sell, they can pretty much name their price: he's young but already experienced and sure value, one of the most hyped players atm, central for the team, signed a new more lucrative contract last season that holds him to club until 2019, PSG has money to keep him and Real is loaded with cash and crazy about spending it.

Hmmm. I'm not rightly sure to be honest. But a new CB and a new GK, both with a decent(ish) pedigree, is promising 🙂

8 years?! What's the course? Or do you just keep failing first year? 😉

A 3 year English degree was the greatest thing ever; in for 6 hours a week, a lot of outside reading but I loved that (hence choosing the degree), and copious amounts of intoxicants.

Can't believe I finished 3 years ago *sniff*

The best thing about Milner signing, and playing in the middle could be that Rodgers is forced to play, players in their natural positions :). 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 (diamond)

Not at all, if it is a decent ML. I don't think I would have won the ML I play on any season with that rank.

Vv below from 03XIR7 on Irish FA and Henry's handball and Warner supposedly stating he's gonna spill the beans on everything he knows......loads more to come.....

Already commented there (see below). Warner is old news already and I don't believe this Ireland thing has an ounce of truth in it.

Warner to my understanding is not _supposed_ but he actually did state this. I've seen a video of it already, and I chose to believe it was real.

Fifa paid the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) to stop legal action over Thierry Henry's handball in Ireland's World Cup play-off defeat by France in 2009, it has been claimed
    😯

This one I don't buy. What would they have paid for, really? The reason etold on bbc is that they would have had a legal case against FIFA for the handball:

      http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-33011692

But that is obviously nonsense. Nobody has a legal case against any football association for a simple referee mistake.

I think we will see many absurd claims like this amongst the real ones. Now that FIFA is finally accused publicly, everybody is trying to milk it.

    Pot kettle black.

It predicted the Cheshire town could provide the tournament at "a total cost of £249.99" ($382.30) following Fifa's current woes with corruption claims.

The bid boasts a 6,335-capacity stadium for the opening ceremony, an average June temperature at "a whopping 14.1°C" and free Wi-Fi in the local library.
