CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2014/15 – FANTASY ITEAM MATCHDAY 13 PICKS

We’re counting down the hours until this season’s Champions League final gets underway. As always, we assess the Fantasy iTeam (FiT) Player Price List and offer two players per team for your perusal ahead of this evening’s deadline.

A free Fantasy football app, FiT is available on a number of mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android. Fantasy managers have until 10 minutes before the first kick-off in any given Matchday to make any final alterations to their starting XIs – this evening, then, that deadline is 7.35pm, as Barcelona and Juventus square up in Berlin.

We’ve supported FiT throughout the competition and have an official Fantasy Football Scout League, with an iPad mini available to the winner. There’s also a VIP European Match Day Experience for two on offer for the overall winner of the Fantasy iTeam Champions League game.

Barcelona

Lionel Messi’s superhuman efforts of late have somewhat overshadowed Neymar’s own superb run of form. The Brazilian prodigy tallied ten goals and two assists in his last ten starts, which is just two strikes and an assist shy of Messi’s haul over the same period.

With Messi an automatic pick for the majority of Fantasy managers, those undecided on Neymar and Luis Suarez as a double-up option should consider that the latter missed Barcelona’s last two league ties with a hamstring knock – although he did make a swift recovery to clock 78 minutes in the Copa del Rey final.

Neymar (11.5) has been irrepressible in the Champions League knockout stages, notching six goals in his previous four starts. Moreover, the former Santos starlet ranked second only to James Rodriquez (six) in term of key passes (five) during the semi-finals, highlighting the strong creative edge to his game.

Dani Alves (7.1) has been one of Barca’s chief facilitators in recent matches, serving up six assists in the Catalan club’s last eight fixtures in all competitions. The Brazilian played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final, laying on two assists for his team-mates.

Alves’ relentless raids down the right flank have also reaped rewards on the European stage, considering he was the only defender to register an assist in the semi-finals. Although he hasn’t netted recently, Alves did attempt the most shots (four) of any Barcelona player outside the afore-mentioned attacking trio over his side’s last four league ties, illustrating his eye for goal.

Juventus

Carlos Tevez (10.3) was rested for three of Juventus’ final four Serie A clashes, before lasting the full 90 minutes against Verona on the last day of the season. As such, the ex-Manchester United marksman should be in prime condition when he lines up against Luis Enrique’s men.

Tevez boasts solid form, having tallied three goals in six starts in all competitions, including the winner in the first leg of the Old Lady’s semi-final against Real Madrid. Indeed, during the semi-final stages, the Argentine led the way for shots (five) and efforts inside the box (three) for Juventus and was placed second in terms of key passes (five) among all players.

Furthermore, Tevez could well be encouraged by the fact that Barcelona conceded three goals in their last Champions League match-up and failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous trio of European road ties.

Whilst the likes of Andrea Pirlo and Paul Pogba offer alternatives in the centre of the park, we’re opting for an in-form differential as our second for the Serie A winners. If you’re looking for a cut-price option to help balance the books, Roberto Pereyra fits the bill perfectly. On loan from Udinese, the Argentina international (priced at a mere 4.6) has enjoyed success in the “number ten” role of late, netting in his side’s last two fixtures.

Admittedly, Pereyra has been restricted to substitute duties in Juventus’ recent Champions League ties, yet his late-season flourish could tempt Massimiliano Allegri to hand him an increased role in Berlin. Indeed, bearing in mind that no player has featured in more Serie A fixtures for Juve in the campaign gone by, Pereyra looks set for a role off the bench at the very worst as the Italians look to upset the odds and emerge triumphant.

FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT LEAGUE

With just today’s final remaining, Adriel Cheung leads our FiT League on 852 points – 26 points ahead of Gavin Rolston, whilst Juan Garcia is close behind Gavin in third, on 825 points. The league name is Fantasy Football Scout and the pin is 11155.

Scotland is an independent country and no longer part of GB or the UK, so I guess the listing is wrong.

Scotland also beat the World Cup holders, Qatar, 1-0 yesterday.

About the Barca title before match, Juve title in play free bet combo, one word of caution that comes in mind:

bet365 has it in their general terms and conditions (and I suppose every other bookie has too), that any use of free bet that gives you a guaranteed winning bet, i.e. you will win money no matter what the outcome of the match, will be invalidated.

Not sure in today's case you can guarantee a win. Tony Hibbert's plan on the last page of backing a non-runner guarantees you can't lose - unless the non-runner becomes a runner, of course - but that would be ok under the Ts and Cs.

Squad player for both I'd say, more so United. Problem is he's just a poacher, not really an all around striker which is demanded by most big teams.

Oh yes, Southampton would have done so much better had they had Hernandes upfront this season. He doesn't do much else than gets himself to good scoring chances and finishes them, but boy does he do that well!

I agree absolutely, he's perfect for a team who simply require a skilled finisher without much more to his game.

I would probably snap him up at Southampton (and I agree he'd be decent for Pool to have as an option).

Just think that the need for a poacher type of striker has died out in the modern game, especially with many teams playing one striker. Teams can't afford to "carry" a player who offers little else and, if anything, this applies more as the teams get "smaller" not less. I think he is a good "last roll of the dice" and that's about it.

          1. Camp No No
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 11 months ago

Some teams still use that type. They won't be the teams that challenge for the big titles of course, but some closer to mid-table ones, say, Liverpool. 😉

              • 10 Years

Don't mean Liverpool uses a poacher, but a team like Pool could. Also, Southampton arguably would have been better off with a good poacher than bad-at-everything Pelle.

Quick tennis poll: Will Roger Federer win another Grand Slam?

Wimbledon his best chance. He will be seeded 2, Murray 3 and Nadal 5/6. So don't think he will need to beat four of them.

Having said that, personally I can watch him play irrespective of winning a grand slam (as long he keep reaching them semis 😉 )

James McCarthy wants urgent contract talks with Everton after the club completed the signing of Tom Cleverley on a five-year deal, writes the Daily Mirror.

The report suggests McCarthy is unhappy because Cleverley will earn more than him when he joins on July 1st but he is also annoyed because talks have not already got underway.

Roberto Martinez had said talks would get underway at the end of the season and the Republic of Ireland international will now push for urgent talks.

Cleverly's high wages probably have a lot to do with the lack of a transfer fee.

From the club's point of view, they have to look at total cost of ownership.

I've literally had the exact amount of responses for the league, so in theory yes, but in reality I doubt everyone will play.

Put your name down if you're interested.

Plus If it turns out we get 16-17 in the end, I'm sure people will be ok with that. Obviously I will ask the original 15 first though if that is the case seeing as it's a large amount of money.

Well Lazio isn't happening for RVP after all

"Reports have linked the Manchester United striker with a move to Italy, but Lotito told Corriere dello Sport it’s a story fabricated by Van Persie’s agent, Vincenzo Morabito.

'Van Persie? Haven't you figured this out yet? It's all rubbish. Total bull. Morabito is the one trying to spread these rumours.'"

I heard they found him after a thunder storm over Dean Court, lying naked in the centre circle, a cigar in his mouth.

She won't have the physical advantage over the men that she has over the women.

Tremendous power over 3 sets. Would she maintain that over 5? That really is what it hinges on, no doubt her skill is up there with the best, men and women.

        8 years, 11 months ago

I'm not sure about her movement, but the power is just too much for any woman out there. Pure physicality.

At her best, before injuries, I think Mauresmo was a decent match for her power wise. And yes, perhaps movement is not Serena's strongest point, though as I say her technique is very polished. So it really depends who you'd pair her up against.

I don't know, she wouldn't be a challenge for any of the Top 20 imo, but after that she'd probably do alright.

Indonesian Christopher Rungkat is currently ranked 300th in the world, with Russian Victor Baluda 350th. The British trio of Josh Goodall, Jamie Baker and Edward Corrie are 312th, 333rd and 340th respectively.

None of them have achievements to match Serena's but the former Australian and French Open winner Mary Pierce believes the depth of the men's game means even they would have a chance.

"I had a lot of guys as sparring partners and some of those guys were tough for me to beat and didn't make it on the tour," Pierce said.

"They are so strong and like Serena said, every serve would be difficult to get back, it would be impossible to ace return and it would be hard to hit a winner."

    Statement from Real Madrid:

"In light of the rumours spread by various media outlets concerning an alleged offer on the part of Lazio for RVP, the club states: Real Madrid have not made any contact with Lazio, or RVP or the player's agent, and therefore these rumours are completely untrue."

These Real Madrid statements just keep coming. Odd.
