Moving Target

Moving Target – Micah Richards

Following the expiry of his contract with Manchester City, Micah Richards signed a four-deal with Aston Villa on a free transfer last week. The right-back sought the promise of first-team football, having recorded just ten appearances on loan at Fiorentina last term.

The History

The Birmingham-born Richards trained at Oldham Athletic’s youth academy for one year before making the switch to Manchester City at 14 years of age. After spending four years in their youth system, Richards earned his first senior appearance for the Sky Blues in 2005, replacing Danny Mills in a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. He went on to make a further 15 appearances in all competitions that campaign, netting his first goal in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Richards established himself as a regular starter over the next couple of seasons, tallying 63 appearances and one goal in all competitions. His cachet rose as a result of his commanding performances at right-back, earning him consecutive nominations for the PFA Young Player of the Year award in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 campaigns.

Richards’ best season in the top flight arrived when City sealed the Premier League crown in 2012; the robust full-back was nominated for the Manchester outfit’s Player of the Year award and notched more assists (five) than any other defender in the league. From the 2012/13 season, however, Argentine international Pablo Zabaleta became the first-choice right-back at the club, demoting Richards to bench duties.

Having chalked up just nine league outings in the previous two terms, Richards joined Fiorentina on a season-long loan deal in September 2014, ending his City career with nine goals and 14 assists across 246 appearances. Unfortunately, the manager at that time, Vincenzo Montella, elected to employ three centre-backs in a 3-5-2 formation that season, limiting Richards to just ten Serie A outings.

Off the back of three appearances for the England U21s, Richards became the youngest defender (18 years, four months and 22 days) to start a match for the senior squad when he played in a friendly against Holland in November 2006. He went on to record 11 caps during Steve McClaren’s brief tenure as the Three Lions boss, before falling out of favour when Fabio Capello was at the helm. To date, Richards has registered one goal and two assists in 13 appearances for England.

The Prospects

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Villa head coach Tim Sherwood cited Richards’ adaptability as a key factor in his acquisition:

“He is a player who can play in a number of positions. He can play right-back, centre-half and also in a three man defence so his versatility is another real positive. When I spoke with Micah it was clear how determined he is to get his career back on track and I’ve every confidence he will recapture the form and quality he displayed before he moved over to Italy. He had a lot of choices but I’m delighted he chose Aston Villa.”

In his last full season as starter, Richards notched one goal and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. Considering that he’s still only 26, there’s every chance that Richards could rediscover the form that had him earmarked as one of England’s top defensive prospects.

From a Fantasy perspective, Richards could well present an enticing route into Villa’s rearguard should he rediscover his best form under Sherwood. For all their failings last season, the West Midlands club still managed a reasonable ten clean sheets, so there’s scope to invest in a low-priced Villa defender when the fixtures are favourable.

In spite of the fact that Villa have two right-backs on their roster (Alan Hutton and Matthew Lowton), Sherwood preferred to deploy winger Leandro Bacuna in that role during the final stretch of last season. Although the Netherlands U21 international served as a potent attacking outlet – notching five assists in ten starts – his relative lack of positional training often left spaces for opposing offenses to exploit.

Certainly, Sherwood’s tactics afford his full-backs plenty of leeway in terms of attacking and given that Bacuna admitted last month that right-back wasn’t his “top position”, Richards’ rampaging runs down the flank could quickly become a feature of Villa’s play. Alternatively, he offers an option in the heart of the backline, though it’s fair to say that there are no shortage of centre-halves for Sherwood to choose from, with Ron Vlaar looking nailed-on, providing he remains injury-free.

Having conceded the third most number of goals last season (57), it’s likely that Villa’s defensive starters are likely to remain around the 4.5 mark. If Richards is placed in the same bracket and plays a prominent role in pre-season, Fantasy managers might be tempted to snap him up early, with the opening schedule smiling relatively kindly on Sherwood’s side. Aside from a home tie against Manchester United in Gameweek 2, the Villains boast a strong opening six fixtures (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) that could allow them to hit the ground running in their first full season under the former Tottenham manager.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    UEFA U21 latest

So how has the competition been so far. How have you coped with no bonus points. Anyone with Kliment captained in Matchday 2? Anyone in with a chance of winning it.

Plus - when is the best time to wildcard. Ahead of match day 3 or use it for the semi-final or final?

        I'm here! (1 hour 38 mins later!!)

WC for the semis for me. In the past I've been caught out when cheaper players have been eliminated from the early rounds and I then cant afford to replace then (as the remaining players are more $$) - hence a rebuild for the semis I would think.

I've already wildcarded due to all the deadwood that didn't play in game 1. Ward Prowse is a little sod isn't he? Why isn't he playing?

Bringing in Kliment and Kadlec for rd 3.

Had an average GW1, but 82 points this week has shot me up the rankings to 111. Don't think I've ever had 6 CS's from all my defenders and GK before. Shame I did Meyer (3 points) to JWP (0) but can't win them all I guess.

No bonus points has made things simpler I think. I will probably WC before the semi-finals.

I'm on 100 thanks to Kliment and a good defence. Looking like defence is the best bet for reliable points. I'm going to wildcard ahead of matchday 3...get rid of some deadwood. I think six transfers for the semi finals will be enough to focus on any key players I'll be missing. I don't like the look of any German midfielders as reliable scorers so may double up on Germany defence for M3. Volland and Beradi look the best players on show to me. Volland is turning that into regular points though.

head to head. The UEFA site has some good articles about permutations. Serbia need a lot of things to happen to go through. Germany need a bunch of bad things to happen to not go through so barring the unexpected they are safe.

113 pts here, not sure about rank, keeps changing for now. Think i'm going to try to save the wc for later, will wait for tomorow lineups to see but like my team, 2 transfers maybe is enough just to change some non starting players. My team:

      Koubek-Butland
      Petkovic-Korb-Sholz-Guerreiro-Romagnoli
      Kliment-Meyer-Hojberg-Silva-Djuricic
      Berardi-Fisher-Volland

Dunno about Leitner, but Højbjerg was supposed to be rested for the first 45 minutes against Germany, but then Germany scored two early goals in the second half and Denmarks coach chose to focus on the decisive game against Serbia instead. So he should be fine.

As usual in Fantasy Football I picked a rubbish starting team, so I had to use my WC before this matchday to clean up the mess. Got off to a terrible start with 34 points, but have upped my game with 58 points in matchday 2. Volland (C) was pleasing, although I'm trying to win the norwegian ML where the leader had Kliment (C). Apart from Volland all my points came from my defence, as for many others.

Already did my two transfers for matchday 3 (Butland->Sa, Krejci->Kliment), and I feel ready and set with this team:

      Busk
      Korb - Scholz - Stojkovic
      Meyer - Højbjerg - Jojic - Kliment
      Volland (C) - Berardi - Thelin
      ---
      Sa - Silva, Guerreiro, Gibson

Berardi as the obvious escape route in case Volland fails. All my mids play tomorrow so Silva will come in for whoever performs the worst. Same goes for defence obivously.

Surprised no one has even mentioned Thelin as an option. Spot kick taker for Sweden with 7 goals in 8 U21-games and available for only 8.0. Might be a little late to pick him up tho.

Micah Richards - great going forward granted and will flourish under Sherwood but with little prospect of cleenies.

That, I'm afraid, is my primary consideration when buying a defender.

I'll repost my mock-team from last article, seemed to be a bit of discussion on it:

      Panti 4.0
Ivanovic, PvA, Ollson, 4.5 Leicester, 4.0 (bournemouth hopefully)
      Hazard, Mane, Silva, Ritchie 4.5
      Rooney, Benteke, Deeney

I haven't had an in-depth look at the defensive rotation due to exams at the moment, but from what I've heard other people say about defensive rotations this should be okay.

Crystal Palace's board are ready to put the block on Alan Pardew’s move for Charlie Austin due to a hefty asking price, according to the Daily Mirror.

QPR have valued Austin at £15million after their relegation from the Premier League last term, and Pardew is thought to be preparing to battle with Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham for the 25-year-old striker.

For some reason I remember Micah as injury prone, don't know why. If nailed could be a decent 4.5m option to start with but Sherwood doesn't like defence. Benteke is high on my watch list. He could score 20+ under Sherwood

Maybe because hearts are short-termist little sods that can't feel into the future - it can't let you feel how you will in the future when you've moved on or found something better. Maybe because sometimes chemistry does not mean compatibility - things can feel good but just don't 'work'. As for the reason you can't think logically about - you can't because love isn't a thing of logic. Anyone that pretends they can is either foolish or lying.

I'll repost my mock-team from last article, seemed to be a bit of discussion on it:

    Myhill 4.0
Ivanovic, PvA, Ollson, 4.5 Leicester, 4.0 (bournemouth hopefully)
    Hazard, Mane, Silva, Ritchie 4.5
    Rooney, Benteke, Deeney

I haven't had an in-depth look at the defensive rotation due to exams at the moment, but from what I've heard other people say about defensive rotations this should be okay.

    Alternitavely Myhill could be Panti

That's 5 promoted players, a Leicester, and no back up keeper for one on limited time. And Ritchie as a 4th midfielder. I think that might be too many unproven players to rely on, i'm afraid.

The 4.5 fifth midfielder will doubtless be one too. So will the 4.0m keeper but that's not such an issue.

Fair enough. As I said last article I haven't just picked them randomly, I've gone with Ivan plus defenders in which I've seen posts about rotating teams. So certainly not picked at random. I'll perfect the rotation once exams are over though 😀

Panti has much the better initial fixtures, might depend on PVAs price. I'm hoping Coates might stay at Sunderland and could be cheaper.

If PvA is 5.0, which I'd expect, he'd be worth the extra 0.5 over other Sunderland defenders simply due to his attacking threat. It's bloody good.

I disagree. There may be some good 4.5's, yes, but Sunderland's fixtures are very good and PvA's attacking threat makes him well worth 5.0 imo

Yes, he had very poor form under Poyet which meant he was dropped. Ever since he, and Sunderland, have been playing well. He's one of their main attacking outlets and they were keeping clean sheets so no chance for him to be dropped really.

          Cheers. 12.5 for Aguero?

I hope Hazard is 11 and Ritchie 5.5!

Any chance of Mane 7.5 and Walcott/Ramsey and Benteke 8.5 you recon?

Yep 12.5 for Aguero. Maybe a few early drops if he doesn't start the first few GWs.

Ritchie would certainly be underpriced at 5.5 imo.

And yes, I think Mane either 7.5 or 8, Walcott could see a 0.5 drop from last season's 9.0 due to lack of minutes, Ramsey should stay at 9.0.

If I was a price making guy at FPL I'd give Bentekers 9.0, he did have a below-average season but you have to look at how he performed under Sherwood - brilliantly. So that should mean he increases in price, but FPL could easily look at his season as a whole.

Does he not play left back?

      1. Camp No No

He was moved to left back for last season when St.-Étienne lost first Ghoulam and then Trémoulinas and could not find a decent replacement for the little money they had, because he had deputised as a LB few seasons earlier for Toulouse when they had injuries.

He is an attacking midfielder really, actually was formed as a central attacking midfielder or a support striker originally, then gradually moved to left when he got more pace because he had a great left foot, and earlier on he turned down one transfer, I think it was to Italy, or to Marseille, because they wanted him as a LB and he said he doesn't want to go anywhere to play as a LB. This may have changed during this season as he seemed to agree to take the LB post, but the fact remains that he is an attacking midfielder who has consistently and intentionally played as a LB for one season only.

If he really plays LB for Swans, that will reduce his appeal a lot. If he is listed as a defender but plays in midfield, he can be gold.

This is why FF scout members do so well. 😀

I imagine it would be tough for him to get in ahead of Montero, Ayew, Siggy, Routledge, Dyer etc, but this has potential.

Yeah, seems strange to me too for Swans to sign him. It think it must be as a LB, because that's where they are weak, but it would have made more sense to me for him to move somewhere else to play on midfield.

He's a strong finisher on left foot and on head too, though not a big guy, he has strength and timing, and has a decent scoring record for a wide midfielder, but it is very important to notice that only couple of his goals are scored as a defender and one of them from a free kick, and I don't think he'll be in set pieces for Swans. But if Siggy/Ayew gets injured, I'd imagine him to be a natural replacement, and could punt on that right away.

By the way, didn't Swans get Naylor just the last summer? Can't imagine they'd drop him completely already.

Higuain? I'd be happy with Giroud then. Guy has a terrible chance conversion rate. Again, Lacazette would be my pick but Arsene knows.

And Schneiderlin, absolutely. Love that player, he would be wasted at Spurs/United. He's like the missing piece to the puzzle.

It's crazy to think Morgan Schneiderlin is seen as the missing piece in a few title-challenging puzzles. I remember seeing him play for Saints in the Championship when he was 18, watching him misplace passes here, there and everywhere. Still, you could see he had potential. I just didn't quite realise how much. We didn't do many good things at that time, as we slid towards League One - signing him was one redeeming move.

His defensive game is virtually flawless, though he does occasionally let his marker wander. What sets him apart is his recovery rate, to snap at heels, to make impossible tackles. It's going forward where he does have flaws. Though I guess, if you're playing next to Santi Cazorla, that's not going to be too problematic.

Yep, one of Cazorla or Ramsey, I guess.

Yep. It would allow Wenger to make an unusually sensible move to play that DM/CM duo, maybe even with Sanchez-Caz-Ramsey in front of them, when away at Stamford Bridge or Etihad, or Allianz, for that matter. Could finally get them some points from these matches.

It's not just not make flaws, he presses extremely aggressively, a style that really shouts for an occasional flaw because he is doing so much on the pitch. And yet he manages to do that very cleanly.

        1. Lucy.
          • 10 Years

And he's definitely worked on that. It wasn't always so clean. His frequency of bookings, as far as I perceive, has dropped off (maybe the stats say otherwise). Some mistake that for a lack of combat, I think he's just better at doing it now.

Very very very occasionally. And I doubt he'd be given that much license to go forward in a bigger team. He gets to have a go at goal because Wanyama is happy to anchor the midfield when he roams and Davis can slot back.

Players need more than potential, they need to really work on it, and how much and in which ways they work is what determines how good they'll be. Schneidelrin's work ethic is outstanding, that's why he has been able to grow the dimension of his game so much and become so dominant player on midfield. And it's also the most important thing why I think he's a great player to sign for any team: his willingness to work hard on and off the pitch, not just in matches and in trainings, but in free time too, to become as good as possible and to bring his best for the team. That's what makes players who can turn the season as well as the big matches for their team.

Yes, the best thing about him is he was kind of gutted at the start of the season and the Spurs non-transfer, but he did not let that affect his season one bit. That is great.

I'd guess it gave him a point to prove. His injuries were unfortunate, I think we could have made 5th if he and Wanyama had played 38 games.

That was another great showing of his personality. Thinking of how good reason he had to be gutted, having been so loyal to Saints, it was very fair of him not to force a transfer but to give them another season when they really badly needed him after losing half their first XI.

But what I really meant was already that as a French youth international captain he signed for a low league club with a vision that it gives him time and chance to develop while getting to the top by helping the club get back to the Premier League and be ready when they get back there. That got him under all radars for some years, but he succeeded in doing just that, developed better than youth internationals who signed for Chelsea or Dortmund or where eve , and when rising to the PL he even worked his fitness so great that he can press high and wide on the pitch relentlessly, track back to low positions when needed, and run back up to support the attacks. Not many are able to make that kind of effort. That's really impressive to me.

He tried to force a transfer, he just failed because Koeman wanted him and he had a long-term contract. He made a public strop on twitter which was hugely unprofessional, missed a game or two and Koeman was very firm with him. He definitely damaged his relationship with the fans. But in the end, he knew he had to suck it up or wait in the U-21s for a move which would have damaged his appeal to potential suitors. He's a great player and I like him a lot, but let's not make him out to be a saint (haha, pun). He and his agent tried a few moves and it didn't work.

Sure, let's not pretend he's a saint, but I have to disagree with your description of both what happened early season and what it means to try to force a transfer.

He didn't miss the start of the season. He was your best player in early matches, but picked an injury after the transfer window was already closed.

That he moaned about him bot being given a transfer for a week or two is not forcing a transfer. Players who force transfers sit out trainings and matches and you will get no use of them. He moaned publicly, once, but the point he made was valid: he had given you his loyal services for years, and now saw everybody else being sold and there was a good bid on table for him and you blocked it. He still did the pre-season with you, trained hard, was in great fit to start the season, scored you goals.

Had he really forced the transfer, you would not have got much out of him all season, would have been worse positioned as a club, and now really forced to sell him with less money and with less appeal for luring good replacements.

But he wouldn't have got a move to a CL club under those conditions and he'd have damaged his own prospects. He's not silly.

In condition that you kept him until January? I'd say he still could have got a move to a French or Italian CL or at least EL club. But had he tried to force a transfer, the reason tot take the risk of that happening is that when he misses couple of first matches of the season the club may not want to take the risk of letting his value and team's chances get any worse, and would have sold him still in August. Back then, he could have well had a move to even an English or Spanish CL club. And there's a good chance that the club would sell him at that point when they evidently were able to make good money with him.

My best friend's GF used to have a season ticket and would bet on Morgan first goal religiously (as a result of his looks, rather than any goalscoring nous). Would've come in a couple of times this season too, but they now both live in Oz so she's missed out.

Ah yes, I have to say that my scouting started out as a crush, rather than appreciating his footballing talent. I was 16, he was a fresh-faced 18 year old with a nice smile and cute eyes... Alas, my tastes have changed.

I remember being at a match away at Nottingham Forest, the season we came up, and a woman in the crowd shouting 'NO DON'T SHOOT' as he took aim from about 30 yards. And he scored. She looked so embarrassed.

I hope Ramos to United happens. Liability of a defender, better when RM are losing 1-2 and he plays as a striker, makes too many defensive mistakes, and too many cards. Would cost a fortune too.

I know a lot won't agree with me, but that's just a general opinion...mostly about his Liga performances, not even talking about the WC when Robben walked with the ball past him twice or thrice.

        Nonsense, I'm afraid. 😉

One of the best defenders in the world. Pepe and Varane have had to fight for a position, but Ramos has been first choice constantly under different managers.

His La Liga whoscored ratings over the last 6 years:

        7.42
        7.46
        7.45
        7.39
        7.36

If United are after Ramos then where will it leave Rojo ?...(can't see them dropping Smalling)...

Rojo is United's best LB imo. Shaw is only 19, and still has a lot to learn.

Offers very little going forward, imo.

        I'd rank them:

        Shaw
        Blind
        Rojo

Shaw was a bad buy. Rojo will surely go to LB...and could be the pick of the bunch in that spot. He looks really threatening when he plays there for Argentina.

Back-up LB to Shaw, Shaw is injured half of the time anyway.
Also #3 CB, I think he is better than the rest.

Cover for Shaw I'd say. Good left back.

I agree. I'm nor sure Shaw is reliable enough as a pick for United. They paid way too much for him.

He needs to stay injury free. He looked better towards the end of the season. He's had to adapt to a new team, and new management style. He's so young as well. I expect him to be much better next season if he stays fit

He was great towards end of season once get got his fitness back! Great attacking threat and defended well too... excited to see him this season after a good preseason tour.

United to go back to 3-5-2 and Rojo to start on the left of the 3 😉

I'd be really surprised if United do not make two or three very big signings in this summer.
Money's not an issue, they don't have the homegrown quota worry, and really need some depth now that CL is back. And most importantly, they're still one of the big names in England, players are attracted.

A heavyweight CB, a promising CDM, and a top striker... not out of their budget, and would make for a scary good team.

and a RB... Valencia not good enough going forward... Coleman would be lovely.

      Possible 4.5m defences:

      AVL
      BOU
      CPL
      LEI
      NEW
      NOR
      STK
      WAT

Load of crap. Leicester probably have the best prospects out of those. Let's hope we get a 4.5m Sunderland defender.

Why is there so much love for Chris Smalling on here? I keep seeing him in RMT's and predicted United line-ups. Did I miss something?!

You may have missed last season?

He was superb. And he captained United when Rooney was absent, demonstrating LvG's faith in him.

Well, he definitely was not superb, okayish would be a more suiting adjective, but LvG seems to have faith in him, indeed.

Nobody sees United buying 2 CBs this summer, and he's better than Jones or Evans or Rojo at CB.

As it stands, he is the most nailed on Man U defender, in a team that starts with good fixtures.

Better prospect than Ivan in value terms with baps and goal threat.

He's, in effect, the vice captain....LVG obviously thinks very highly of him having given him the armband once or twice in Rooney's absence.

I thought he did ok at the end of the season and looked a threat at set-pieces but he only got 5 BPS in games that he didn't score in. I wouldn't say that classes him as a magnet. United also only got 1 CS in the last 9 games.

No Carrick really hurt United in those games imo.

Good point. Can't see him staying fit for a whole season though so the same problem may keep occurring?

Does this potential deal for Ramos end the chances of Otamendi?

Ramos plays on the left when playing with Pepe so I guess he would do the same with Smalling.

Ramos can play left and right centre back. He plays on the left because he is very good with both feet, more so than Varane, Pepe and Pique.

No because Ramos will never join United. Feel free to bookmark this and re-assess it next month when Ramos signs a new deal.

So, is Knoche dropped from Germany squad now? Heinz a starter? Or was this just a case of resting him? Strange to rest him against Denmark though, but it seems Denmark rested Hohjbjerg, too, or what happened there?

We will know lineups. Holjbjerg was rested due to fatigue, no idea about Knoche.
