Moving Target

Moving Target – Micah Richards

Following the expiry of his contract with Manchester City, Micah Richards signed a four-deal with Aston Villa on a free transfer last week. The right-back sought the promise of first-team football, having recorded just ten appearances on loan at Fiorentina last term.

The History

The Birmingham-born Richards trained at Oldham Athletic’s youth academy for one year before making the switch to Manchester City at 14 years of age. After spending four years in their youth system, Richards earned his first senior appearance for the Sky Blues in 2005, replacing Danny Mills in a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. He went on to make a further 15 appearances in all competitions that campaign, netting his first goal in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Richards established himself as a regular starter over the next couple of seasons, tallying 63 appearances and one goal in all competitions. His cachet rose as a result of his commanding performances at right-back, earning him consecutive nominations for the PFA Young Player of the Year award in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 campaigns.

Richards’ best season in the top flight arrived when City sealed the Premier League crown in 2012; the robust full-back was nominated for the Manchester outfit’s Player of the Year award and notched more assists (five) than any other defender in the league. From the 2012/13 season, however, Argentine international Pablo Zabaleta became the first-choice right-back at the club, demoting Richards to bench duties.

Having chalked up just nine league outings in the previous two terms, Richards joined Fiorentina on a season-long loan deal in September 2014, ending his City career with nine goals and 14 assists across 246 appearances. Unfortunately, the manager at that time, Vincenzo Montella, elected to employ three centre-backs in a 3-5-2 formation that season, limiting Richards to just ten Serie A outings.

Off the back of three appearances for the England U21s, Richards became the youngest defender (18 years, four months and 22 days) to start a match for the senior squad when he played in a friendly against Holland in November 2006. He went on to record 11 caps during Steve McClaren’s brief tenure as the Three Lions boss, before falling out of favour when Fabio Capello was at the helm. To date, Richards has registered one goal and two assists in 13 appearances for England.

The Prospects

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Villa head coach Tim Sherwood cited Richards’ adaptability as a key factor in his acquisition:

“He is a player who can play in a number of positions. He can play right-back, centre-half and also in a three man defence so his versatility is another real positive. When I spoke with Micah it was clear how determined he is to get his career back on track and I’ve every confidence he will recapture the form and quality he displayed before he moved over to Italy. He had a lot of choices but I’m delighted he chose Aston Villa.”

In his last full season as starter, Richards notched one goal and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. Considering that he’s still only 26, there’s every chance that Richards could rediscover the form that had him earmarked as one of England’s top defensive prospects.

From a Fantasy perspective, Richards could well present an enticing route into Villa’s rearguard should he rediscover his best form under Sherwood. For all their failings last season, the West Midlands club still managed a reasonable ten clean sheets, so there’s scope to invest in a low-priced Villa defender when the fixtures are favourable.

In spite of the fact that Villa have two right-backs on their roster (Alan Hutton and Matthew Lowton), Sherwood preferred to deploy winger Leandro Bacuna in that role during the final stretch of last season. Although the Netherlands U21 international served as a potent attacking outlet – notching five assists in ten starts – his relative lack of positional training often left spaces for opposing offenses to exploit.

Certainly, Sherwood’s tactics afford his full-backs plenty of leeway in terms of attacking and given that Bacuna admitted last month that right-back wasn’t his “top position”, Richards’ rampaging runs down the flank could quickly become a feature of Villa’s play. Alternatively, he offers an option in the heart of the backline, though it’s fair to say that there are no shortage of centre-halves for Sherwood to choose from, with Ron Vlaar looking nailed-on, providing he remains injury-free.

Having conceded the third most number of goals last season (57), it’s likely that Villa’s defensive starters are likely to remain around the 4.5 mark. If Richards is placed in the same bracket and plays a prominent role in pre-season, Fantasy managers might be tempted to snap him up early, with the opening schedule smiling relatively kindly on Sherwood’s side. Aside from a home tie against Manchester United in Gameweek 2, the Villains boast a strong opening six fixtures (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) that could allow them to hit the ground running in their first full season under the former Tottenham manager.

I'd be so annoyed if we lost him to United.

No idea why neither team seem to have made a move yet. You'd assume Southampton would leak info if their had been communication to drive the price up..

Tottenham defender DeAndre Yedlin will be loaned out for the forthcoming season, according to Sky sources.

The destination of the loan is as yet unknown, but the 21-year-old American right-back will be playing away from White Hart Lane for at least some of the 2015/16 season.

Why would City pay anywhere near 40m for an unhappy Sterling in this window? Surely if his contract expires next year they will be able to get him much cheaper in Jan? No idea why they even want him tbf , £40m is ridiculous!

Aguero has improved at Man City. He got 20 goals in La Liga in his last season, and only 12 goals the season before.

That was also 4/5 years ago, and football inflation far exceeds normal levels of inflation.

Aguero now is a £70m striker. Hazard cost £30m, but he is a £80m player.

Transfer fees of past players do not change the current market value of Sterling.

So you think sterling is worth Rodgers valuation of 50 million. A player that has regressed instead of progressed. I
His min to goals ratio in the league in 13/14 was 2219 with 9 goals, to 3047 with 7 goals. Granted he did play some games at wing back. But he also played center forward also. I don't think him and Kane are worth what's been quoted. English players are over priced. I gave kun as an example. I think Kane will suffer from burn out at the amount games he playing. Next summer the euro's. So it'll the summer of 2017 by time he gets a proper summer off. I don't think he should have went to these meaningless u21 tournament.

I think the value of Sterling is £40m.

Sterling has done better than Kane for longer, at a higher level for club and country.

His 'regression' is just form. Explained easily due to fatigue, contract issues and being played out of position.

I think people are too influenced by form, completely disregarding a player who is rightfully seen across the continent as one of the best young players in world football.

He is already a very good player, with the potential to be a superstar.

It's the unproven argument again, but Richie has the ability to define games against the weaker Prem sides, nice early fixtures makes him less of a risk than previous promoted attackers.

For us old stagers too we can add Rob Earnshaw, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake to the list too. The only one who's bucked the trend was Andy Carroll at Newcastle. Even Charlie Austin started the season poorly for both FPL points and transfer value.

I think you'll be surprised by his ownership. If everyone on FFS buys him straight away his % ownership will be the highest in his price range which is what the default filter on players is when initially selecting a team.

Pretty sure he'll be in my team, fourth midfielder. Think a price tag of 6.0 seems most likely. Sinclair was 6.0 when Swansea got promoted, although he relied on pens, didn't dominate on the set-pieces so much.

He's in the third column of my short list marked "possibles". But if I take a Bournemouth midfielder it's much more likely to be Atsu.

We're stuck with buying promoted defenders and mids as makeweights for Haz, Kun etc. Last season showed their benefit, particularly in double gameweeks. Is Richie actually any good? stats aside.

Man I been watching them and I'm convinced those eds are full of sh1t. They talk with such authority but completely backtrack when they are proven and push the ones they get close to right. E.g. he said an agreement had been made with skrtel that he would sign. Then when skrtel said that's nonsense he changed his tune to "the agreement might be that he will leave" same with the kovacic stuff. You know they have same websites for all the English clubs and European leagues. Nice earner I bet.

I reckon they are the John Edwards of transfer rumours. Some of the stuff they wrote about bony and balotelli in the past was contradicted by that gag insider article too, they said with certainty that Liverpool had a deal for bony in the bag but we're haggling over a few mill but that article clearly said that while Rodgers wanted bony or Martinez the committee would only sanction Remy, balotelli or etoo

Still selling Mandzukic to Juventus and Miranda to Inter this summer to recoup some of the transfer fees but ultimately their finances are a lot better. Also €55m = £40m.

Mane or Walcott/Ramsey for 3rd mid?

Both have decent starting fixtures, Mane may be slightly less than the Arsenal lads by 0.5 or 1. But all of them seem to have rotation issues or injury prone-ness in the case of Ramsey.

We've been linked again with Austin (a potential bid) and we'll have, at the very least, J-Rod fit. J-Rod offers something completely new to our forward line, imo. Juanmi will provide an option on those wings where Mané found starts. Tadic will have finally shaken off the groin problems which haunted him from Christmas time. And JWP will further strengthen his case for starts.

Elia and Djuricic loans are over and they are long gone, never to return 😀

I expect the focus to be a new CB and DM, to replace the outgoing Schneiderlin and Toby.

Yes, Skybet make us favourites at 2/5. I'm not massively keen. It doesn't seem the best fit. He's not young, he's not a combative midfielder like Schneiderlin and he's probably going to command a high wage. He might slip in at CAM but I'd prefer someone more dynamic. Our tactics/formation would definitely need tweaking and I'm not sure that would benefit the team as a whole.

I think it's rubbish. I also kinda hope it's rubbish. He's a great defender and he was a key part of our team. But £18m is a lot, particularly for a club like us. And splashing the cash makes me nervous after the last two attempts - Dani Osvaldo and Gaston Ramirez.

I might be interested in a Bournemouth defender but it really depends on the pricing of other options. If I can find a more established defensively-proven team with defenders at 4.5m, I'm likely to favour them. Though of course, the unlikely 4.0m option from Bournemouth would put them back in contention.

As for the rest, difficult to work out without prices. Ritchie could be a 4th mid but I'm a little cautious o that one.

        Matt Ritchie.
(44 starts, 2 sub apps. 15 goals, 17 assists) – Bournemouth’s star man ticks a lot of boxes for Fantasy managers. Ritchie takes the vast majority of free-kicks and corners, and can score from long range while also timing his runs into the box perfectly. Capable with either foot and forms a good partnership with Simon Francis down the right flank. Ritchie made his Scotland debut in the 1-0 win against Northern Ireland in March and provided the assist for the winner. Named in the PFA Championship Team of the Season, he fired more shots and created more chances than any team-mate.

“Atlético always had the priority. In addition, there are not many teams who are better in a sporting sense. There aren’t six teams better than us. Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, maybe Chelsea, and then us. Financially we are in the [top] 15,”

They've been on borrowed time for a while. Their success in the 90's was bankrolled by embezzled money and they have various other dodgy owners since so I don't think they deserve a lot of sympathy.

That was a great team back in the late 90's though.

It's worth recognising that there is a huge distance between a club's owners and its fans. What is deserved for the owner, isn't in the hands or deserved by the fans and players. Portsmouth are a good example - dodgy ownership and mismanagement doesn't mean that, as much as I may enjoy an intense rivalry with them, the fans or players deserved to watch their club sink into the abyss. I have no sympathy for the unscrupulous businessmen that drive these clubs to the edge but I will always mourn the loss of a great football club because it's about more than businessmen.

I agree that it's not nice for the fans but they would not have had any success without the embezzled money. It's not like they were a big club already that have been mismanaged.

I think once Pompey get their ground sorted they will start climbing up the leagues again. May be a while before you play them in the league again though 😉

      Fabregas vs Hazard

Some of you will never buy Fabregas, a steady assister but never more. That's fine. But others of you see Fabregas' traditional early season form as a tempter, if the price is right. You think you can manage the first 5-10GWs without Mr Hazard.

So to those of you who would ever consider Fabregas over Hazard to begin with, how much cheaper will he need to be?

... That doesn't really answer or add to the scenario as my question already recognised that caveat. I assume most, whether they start with him or not, will end up with Hazard.

At least 2m but preferably 3m, but I can't see it. For me its not just the price, its the gamble to get an early head start. Last year I timed it to absolute perfection.

I don't think I managed perfection but I was probably only a GW or 2 out. I'd say it worked starting with Fabregas, however much Doos lamented me for it 😉

If Sanchez and Aguero are not available at the start I could even go with both. Fab should be about £2M cheaper.

Interesting. I'd be looking at Silva and Walcott if that were the case. One Chelsea mid is enough for me. Appreciate that idea though - I hadn't even considered that. 🙂

Hmm good question. I think it not only depends on the price difference of those two, but the prices of other heavy hitters.

If Fabregas comes in at 9.0 and Hazard 11.0 I may be tempted. Although I'm planning on starting with Ivanovic so I could always downgrade him to a Koscielny, say, instead.

I started with Fab at 9m over Haz (at what, 10.5m) last year, and then switched after 6/7 weeks when Hazard was beginning to look threatening. Had no qualms with ditching Fab at the time, even though he went on to score his first goal v Palace and Haz blanked for a couple.

This year i'm not so sure i would start with Fab, regardless of the difference in price. I know his form generally tails off, but it was always going to be difficult to keep that frequency of assists up, and i don't think he'll manage it next year. And he's not a captain contender, which you'd want your 9+m guys to be.

Worth noting i started with Cahill, Fab, and Costa last year, but WC'ed in order to get Haz and Aguero in at the same time. May use the Copa as a chance to delay on Aguero again, so things will be dependent on Argentina's progression.
