Pre-Season

Sleeper – Juan Mata

During the final few weeks of the 2013/14 season, Juan Mata showed he was settling into life as a Manchester United player following his £37.1 million move from Chelsea, scoring six goals in his final six appearances.

The Spanish international, priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ahead of the 2014/15 campaign, netted twice in United’s first four matches and seemed to have cemented a regular starting role in Louis van Gaal’s line-up.

With club record signing Angel Di Maria and fellow new boy Radamel Falcao thrust into the reckoning, Mata went into the season uncertain of his position in the pecking order. He duly failed to feature in three of United’s matches between Gameweeks 6 and 12, although he did register a goal and an assist during that period. Primarily due to injuries to others, the former Chelsea man regained a regular spot in the first XI from Gameweek 13, and he notched another two goals and pair of assists, before finding himself on the periphery of the first-team picture once again from Gameweek 23.

Mata would have to wait until the home encounter with Tottenham in Gameweek 29 for his next start, and he would go on to score three goals and provide an assist in his next trio of appearances, as United found their best form of the season to see off Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester City. The Spaniard was now a vital member of the United side, and he would start every match for the rest of the season, although with Van Gaal’s men failing to score in four of their final six clashes, Mata’s only attacking points were from the penalty spot at Crystal Palace.

He finished the season as United’s joint-highest scorer along with David de Gea in FPL on 138 points, scoring nine goals and bagging four assists from 33 appearances (27 starts). When compared to the top three FPL midfielders, Mata’s goal conversion rate of 27.3% was far superior to Eden Hazard (17.9%), Alexis Sanchez (13.2%) and David Silva (18.2%), though the United man’s frequency of attempts (a shot every 73.2 minutes) was significantly slower than Hazard (45.2), Sanchez (25.4) and Silva (41.6).

THE PROSPECTS

United’s summer recruitment has already begun, with left-sided attacker Memphis Depay signed up, leaving Ashley Young’s place in Louis van Gaal’s preferred 4-3-3 formation under serious threat, while Angel Di Maria is also expected to fare better in his second season in England, should he, as expected, remain at Old Trafford.

Radamel Falcao is no longer at the club and with the futures of Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez yet to be decided, it appears likely that United will look to sign another attacker this summer. So while Mata may not be quite as “nailed on” as the likes of Sanchez, Hazard and Silva by the time the transfer window closes, it would be a surprise for him not to feature in the Dutchman’s regular starting line-up next season.

Speaking about the Spanish playmaker towards the end of last term, van Gaal was emphatic in his praise of the midfielder:

“I think Juan Mata is always one of my better players. Always. Now he is playing as a false right-winger and the combination with Herrera and Valencia gives him more opportunities. I was looking for balance and now I have found a position for him.”

Another caveat to Mata’s Fantasy appeal is the fact it appears he will start next term as the number one penalty taker, after netting United’s last spot-kick against Palace in Gameweek 36, although a miss in pre-season may change that, if van Gaal’s “penalty structure” remains in place. With a share of set-piece duties in his locker too, Mata has a real chance of returning to the form that racked up 162 and 212 FPL points in his two full seasons at Chelsea.

Mata ended the previous campaign valued at 8.5, so it seems unlikely that he will be priced any higher than last term’s original starting price of 9.0. Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera both notched six league goals last season and are expected to remain in the mid-price bracket, offering viable alternatives at a cheaper price, while both Depay and Di Maria should be valued similarly to Mata for the new campaign.

There will clearly be plenty of options for Fantasy managers to consider from United, least of all Wayne Rooney, but if Van Gaal continues with the 4-3-3 system, which looks likely following the signing of Depay, Mata’s role on the right could see him come into his own as a Fantasy asset.

United were the fourth highest scorers in the league last season with 62 goals accrued, so Fantasy owners may prefer to look to City, Chelsea and Arsenal for their “big hitters”. Certainly, Van Gaal’s side will need to improve their form on the road after scoring just 21 away goals last term – only two more than relegated QPR and almost half City’s tally of 39.

With further signings on the cards, though, Van Gaal is expected to close the 17-point gap to Chelsea considerably next season after a year of settling in. Should that be the case, an improved showing from Mata looks likely, which would catapult him well and truly back into our thoughts after a stop-start 18 months at the Theatre of Dreams.

Guidetti (c) (on a hunch) and also got Tibbling ...... Makes up for double German defence and leaving a Port defender on the bench. Sort of ....

Mind, I was doing useless so all moot!

Why do so many people seem to like Depay as a pick? I definitely see him starting the season on the bench. One to monitor only I think...

He should do, but I cant believe people consider him an option.

He did okay last season with returns, but he scored with almost every shot. The year before he got 5 goals, and then 7 goals in the previous 4 seasons combined.

He's just not a goalscoring midfielder. More in the Modric mould, imo.

He wouldn't be the player he is if he started taking pot shots from outside the box, or starting charging into the box like Ramsey/Henderson.

He's a fantastic third-to-third player, and I don't think he or Man U would benefit in trying to turn him into anything else.

Probably but there's always a chance Schneiderlin will take some of his game time while partnered with Carrick. It's only if United sign two mids that Herrera's game time will be a real issue though I'd guess.

They will make four for definite, not sure they will get a second CB.

They won't sign a GK as they have Valdes and it's always been the plan for him to replace De Gea.

Carrick will only play in European games when LvG wants to dominate midfield with him and Schneiderlin.

There is zero chance of Juan Mata playing LCM. As I posted on the last page, United play with three midfielders - Mata is clearly not a true midfielder.

In a 4-3-3 system, Mata plays from the right as an inverted playmaker, or he doesn't play at all...

          Herrera - Schneiderlin - Schweinsteiger/Gundogan
          di Maria/Mata - Rooney - Memphis

      Courtois/backup

      Ivan/backup Terry/backup Cahill/backup Azpi/backup

      Cesc/backup Matic/backup

      Willian/backup Oscar/backup Hazarx/backup

      Costa/backup

I'm not a fan of having too many starters, or rotation, or competition for places. I have always liked squads/teams that know who the first Xl are, mainly, and are only changed through need (including the odd rest)....Teams/squads can often fall apart from within when things are unclear... Just my view.

Yeah, it's not good. It's one of those things that sound really good in theory but in practise can become impossible to manage. You'd need a very special group of players to stop petty jealousies and cliques forming.

Why is everyone writing off City winning the league next season? I have seen a lot of people predicting City will finish 4th next season. What is the thinking behind that?

Ok City had a disappointing season last year, all City fans will agree with that. However they were the only team that were close to Chelsea in the league table at any point (joint top start of 2015). That was despite most players under performing and Aguero out for a couple of months. That was with a period with no fit forwards. There should be an improvement on last season on that alone.

Then look at the interview with Khaldroon, the chairman of City a couple of weeks ago. He stated everyone at the club was disappointed with last season and promised improvement. Fourth place certainly isnt on the clubs radar when second is a disappointment. He promised quality would be added to the team. The owners have not failed to deliver on their promises yet, they said they would build a club for the future, the main way of doing this being the building of one of the greatest football academies in the world. The underage success demonstrates that. The facilities are state of the art. They promised an increase in the clubs finances and this has been delivered with incredible growth in revenue over the past few years. So when they make a promise, I, for one, tend to believe them.

To look at some of the reasons people are claiming City wont do well. FFP is one. However FFP is a thing of the past for City. This has been confirmed by the club. Another is too old a squad. This is being addressed with buying quality young players this summer. Another is Aguero leaving. This wont happen. Aguero has said it time and time again he is happy at City and has no intention of leaving.

So I dont really know why people have written off City for next year. Sorry for the length of the post but I just wanted to enquire why this is.

Ok Id agree that based on the transfers so far and on last season, there is no reason to believe City will beat Chelsea to the league, thats a fair comment. I hope the transfers in the next few weeks may change that but for now fair enough.

However taking the transfers so far and last seasons performances why are Arsenal and United more likely than City to win the league, why are they predicted to finish ahead of City? Neither have made head turning transfers just yet have they? Good additions certainly but enough to make a difference of finishing ahead of City?

I'm also basing it on Arsenal keeping a fully fit squad. 'If' all players stay fit I'd fancy them ahead of Man City. Of course it's a big if though and probably won't happen, but that's all we have to go on.

      I totally 100% agree.

They flopped the season after winning their first league title, and came back strongly.

They have the best striker in the league, the best 10 in the league, if Yaya can get his head straight he is on of the best midfielders in the league, Kompany on form is by a distance the best centre back in the league, Hart is quality, and they have quality in every area of the pitch.

They need decent coaching, a couple of signings and they will be an absolute force.

They absolutely need a CB or a CDM, and a couple of wingers as well,or they will be dismantled again. Arsenal or Chelsea do not have such big holes in the squad

I agree on a centre back, although Kompany and Mangala could be a great partnership, I think Fernandinho is a very good player, and then they still have Nasri, Navas, Jovetic Silva for the wide roles. Just one wide player, and a backup centre back and they'll be in a great position, imo.

Someone other than Yaya needs to partner Fernandinho.

And well, you're mostly right, only one difference of opinion. Think Mangala is a piece of trash.

They didn't have many problems with Yaya in the pivot other than in Europe until his brother died. I think he can play there if he gets his head straight, and they sort out a better pressing game.

Mangala certainly didn't have a great season, but he didn't turn to rubbish after one season. A young player, in a new team, massive expectations, big price tag, in an ever changing defence, without much protection. It's understandable that his season wasn't great. I think there is plenty to come from him, personally.

Yaya is not good enough to play 40+ games a season anymore, that's all I think. And Fernando/Fernandinho look very bad together, the times I have seen them play.

Can you imagine that's all they have in the CM department, now that Milner is gone?

I'd certainly agree with that. So another central midfielder, although not necessarily one that would replace Yaya.

                  Seems doable.

Yeah, but with all the distractions of home grown/non home grown in City ranks, not too confident how they want to go about in this window... United and Arsenal, on the other hand, don't need to worry much about that.

Delph apparently has a £10m buyout clause. That seems like it would meet all their requirement for a homegrown player they could play sporadically.

Either way, and whatever ones position on all these points, I think the original point remains that they aren't in the precarious position people seem to believe they are.

I think it'll be a 3 way fight between us, Chelsea and City next season. Too tight to call imo.

Id agree one hundred percent with needing a new CDM. Thats essential but I think one or two will be bought this summer. Scored more goals than any team in the league last year so should be ok with the attacking options. Also playing 451 would avoid the midfield problems that were there last year.

      2. Polaris - The Mortal Coil

Think they need a tad more than a couple of signings. A midfielder should be a must - Yaya & Fernandinho would get overrun and outplayed an awful lot imo, particularly against very good midfields. A couple of attacking mids should also be a must - wingers, probably. Could be argued that a CB may be needed, although some understandably believe Mangala will step it up.

Personally I think predicting City to finish fourth is reasonable at this stage. I can see Chelsea, United, Arsenal all being title contenders anyway...

May not be by the time the window shuts though?

Also worth noting that City only finished the season well when the pressure was off. That didn't convince me at all. Before their end of season run, and before Chelsea had the title wrapped up, City were always prone to being fragile when the games had something riding on them. A lot to be done IMO.

It was just after the Derby. I think something happened after that, an emergency meeting behind the scenes or something along those lines. City seemed to improve after that and won most if not all games after that match. I wouldnt agree there was nothing to play for then. At the time there was serious talk of City finishing behind Arsenal and United. However the team stepped up and got second.

Id agree with the positions you said need to be strengthened. A defensive mid is essential. I would not play Toure as a defensive mid next season. It just leaves City too vulnerable. Great attacking option to have though. Also a change in formation would help the problems in midfield. Id expect Mangala to step it up next season and hopefully Kompany will be back to his best.

I wouldnt have Arsenal or United ahead of City to be honest.

Lots of hoping though, basically. Fact is, Mangala hasn't been convincing yet and Kompany has been awful AND injury prone for a long time now, fair to say? And the midfield is average currently...

Yeah it is a lot of hoping. No guarantees any of that will happen. True Kompany has been terribly injury prone in the past couple of seasons and has played very poor at times because of that. Mangala actually seems to play better with Demichelles than Kompany. Midfield needs to be strengthened no doubt. Only Fernandinho, Toure and Fernando at the moment, badly need another quality addition there.

Id agree with all of that. They have a great chance as long as those players regain their form. They do need to address a couple of weaknesses. Also some tactical decisions like overplaying 442 too much need to be addressed also but there is no reason why this cant happen.
