Projections and Rate My Team Are Live

After yesterday’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, our Projections and Rate My Team tool have both been updated with initial numbers in our Members Area and are now live. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the pre-season reveals more on likely starting lineups and roles.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires Membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for Members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections almost every day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

Limits the options. I know if one gets injured, you have the other etc. But if their form dips massively there's no plan B. Just my thoughts after getting stung last season with it

well rotation certainly decreases the risk you'll need a transfer and improves your average fixture...on the other hand £0.5m all season is not to be sniffed at when you look at your cheap defenders

Pardew loves Puncheon. Spoke highly of him before becoming palace manager and often praised him last season saying he was their best player. He only dropped him briefly when his form dipped. It had the desired effect and his form picked up at the end of the season. Puncheon was wasted in open play when Pardew played him as a CM for periods of last season. Cabaye signing could mean a more advanced role and big points

    First stab at a team....

    Courtois - 4m
    Koscielny - Lescott - PVA - Morgan - 4m?
    Ozil - Fabregas - Silva - Henderson - 4.5m (Wanyama?)
    Costa - Rooney - Deeney

Seems a fairly balanced team with 5 big hitters (+Koscielny!). Thoughts lads?

the only negative against Kun is him being injury prone. He said a couple of times recently that he believes a change in diet has rid him of his injury problems. If he plays a couple of games in pre season then I will definitely get him. His upside is too great to miss out on. He has scored on the opening gw quite a bit from memory.

If he does well, he's justifying his 13m price tag. He needs to do very well to be 'essential'.

I'd feel comfortable, with Hazard as the default captain, forgoing Aguero initially.

My provisional plan if Kun is fit for GW1:

      Yaya > Hendo/Cabaye
      Hazard > Fabregas
      Darmian > 4.5
      Lukaku > Kun

So, yeah, the Kun savings go a long way...

Afternoon all, any thoughts and opinions on this are most welcome:

    Schmeichel Hamer

    Ivanovic Mert Toby Oshea Baker/4.0

    Fabregas Cazorla Henderson Cabaye Wanyama

    Aguero Rooney Sakho

    0.0itb

Always a fan of the one team GK, saves the heartache of benched points

Fab over hazard, start of season, cazorla pens and seeminly nailed on, hendo pens nailed on, cabaye set pieces nailed, wanyama bench fodder

It was either Aguero or Sanchez and i can't see past Aguero, Rooney as the focal point of Uniteds attack and Sakho because he is underpriced and could be a gem.

Azpi has gametime concerns with Luis still and Walcott is also not nailed on

How about Bojan instead of Deeney or Wilson?

I prefer that as he is established PL quality. But he will be playing in the midfield so that's a negative.

He's on my watchlist. Problem is with Joselu, Diouf, Crouch and Walters there he's not fully nailed

But a good preseason and he could be a nice pick, especially with Hughes going to have to attack every game without N'Zonzi

Apparently he travelled with the squad on their pre-season, but he hasn't been named in the squad.

There are still doubts over whether he will actually be fit to start the season, I believe.

What is the difference between the way Bournemouth play and the way Swansea and Southampton played when they came up from the championship?

    1. Bøwstring The Carp
      • 12 Years

Hard to say but Swansea and Southampton are very good defensively.

Maybe tactically, they are more cohesive at the back with better communication and discipline?

Swansea don't really risk their fullbacks getting very forward at the chance of creating space on their flanks.

I think ultimately it comes down to player skill/ mentality and discipline

Under Rodgers Rangel used to get well forward when they were promoted, no doubt they are a very different team now.

I'm just now sure Bournemouth will be that bad if they maintain their approach

Ah, didn't know about that to be honest. Was told he was nailed and had some attacking threat but that was some weeks ago. Martin is team captain so probably gametime secure.

According to LightKnight Norwich full backs will be better

problem is Olsson is recovering from knee surgery and they're still trying to sign a rb.

      I've gone for Ruddy

It varied. Majority of yhe time, no. The team was setup to let Cabaye dictate the play. He got pushed into the hole because our lack of goals and creativity up top forced it. Along with the fact we had no decent right winger so sissoko was pushed out wide too
