Moving Target

Moving Target – Morgan Schneiderlin

On the same day that Manchester United announced the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin was also confirmed as a Red Devil. After completing a deal for the combative Frenchman, Louis van Gaal explained the reasons behind his latest acquisition:

“Morgan is a player from the Premier League so he can cope with the Premier League. Our selection was not in balance and I have already mentioned that I want to make the balance with midfielders, so you could expect that I shall buy two holding midfielders. And Morgan Schneiderlin is the type that I think can play in our system and in our philosophy. Manchester United only buy players who can make a contribution for that. We are not buying just for buying.”

The History

Schneiderlin worked his way up the youth ranks at RC Strasbourg, penning his first professional contract in 2005. The French international managed just five appearances with the Alsace club, before being sold to Southampton in the summer of 2008 following Strasbourg’s relegation to the second tier of French football.

The combative midfielder found himself in and out of the line-up during his debut campaign with the Saints, producing zero attacking returns across 23 starts. In the wake of Southampton’s relegation to League One, he cemented a regular berth in the 2009/10 season, serving up one goal and two assists in 37 appearances.

Following the south coast outfit’s promotion back to the Championship for the 2011/12 campaign, Schneiderlin featured in all but four of their league ties, tallying two goals and three assist in 29 starts. A second-place finish gained the Saints entry into the top flight, where the he continued to flourish; having notched five goals and one assist in 36 outings, Schneiderlin was honoured as the Player’s Player and Fans Player of the Year.

In his previous two campaigns at St Mary’s Stadium, he chalked up six goals and three assists over 59 appearances, with ligament injury and a torn abductor muscle restricting him to 24 starts in the 2014/15 season.

Schneiderlin made his debut for France’s senior squad on June 8, 2014 in an 8-0 friendly win against Jamaica. Less than three weeks later, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps started him in a World Cup group clash against Ecuador. In all, Schneiderlin has earned nine caps on the international stage but is yet to score.

The Prospects

Schneiderlin’s arrival at Old Trafford – allied with the recruitment of Bastian Schweinsteiger – has furnished Van Gaal with a wealth of excellent midfield options. Factor in the impressive late-season form of Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, and there is a myriad of viable set-ups that could exploit the Red Devils’ new-found strength.

With Van Gaal likely to operate with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Schneiderlin can be expected to sit in front of the back-four as Van Gaal attempts to bring a better balance to a side that managed just 11 clean sheets in the previous campaign – just one more than relegated pair Hull and Burnley.

In terms of his individual Fantasy worth, Schneiderlin hardly set the world alight with four goals and one assist in 2,186 minutes for Saints last term, yet his 5.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game could entice some investors who are reluctant to invest heavily in United’s premium options.

Surprisingly, Schneiderlin fashioned shots (one per 76.7 minutes) at a similar rate to Mata (73.2 minutes) last year and has wasted no time in settling into his new surrounds, having scored on his United debut last week. In terms of creativity, it’s clear he is no deep-lying playmaker in the mould of Cesc Fabregas – the Frenchman provided just 20 key passes in 26 appearances in 2014/15, though his minutes per key pass (115) was still far quicker than Carrick’s 191.1, for example.

One look at the stats highlights what the new boy will mainly bring to Old Trafford. In his three seasons in the Premier League, Schneiderlin’s ball-winning ability was fundamental to the Saints’ style of play. In 2012/13, where he missed just two matches, he was first amongst Premier League midfielders for attempted tackles (182), successful tackles (108) and interceptions (139), whilst he sat third for successful tackles in each of the last two campaigns (2013/14, with 87 and 2014/15, with 79) despite his pitch time being somewhat restricted due to injury.

It may well be, then, that his determined displays in the centre of the park will boost United’s defensive prospects more than anything else. Given that no Red Devils defender made 30 or more appearances last year, though, many Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Van Gaal’s backline from the off unless the remaining pre-season line-ups suggest greater consistency of selection.

In terms of fixtures, the opening schedule could certainly be a lot kinder for Van Gaal’s troops, though. United play six of last year’s top eight in the first ten Gameweeks, suggesting that Schneiderlin’s defensive duties will be key in the first couple of months. The Frenchman may well struggle to earn our attention if, as expected, he’s mainly employed to break up opposition attacks and provide the platform for Mata, Depay and Wayne Rooney to wreak havoc further up the field.

Hart in goal anyone? Absolutely nailed compared with Cech and Courtois (both with decent back ups) and the cheapest link to a City defence that is constantly rotated.

      They're all absolutely nailed.

Great keeper, but City defence is probably the worst of the premiums imo. Keepers this season are probably better from lower to mid table teams - need those save points

Unlikely to get as many save points and therefore bonus points in a team that's dominant. Last season Mignolet and Fabianski were top points scoring keepers. I'm toying with the idea of two rotational keepers (eg Schmeichel and someone) with Kompany in defence. Will monitor the City defence and his fitness.

            Really?

Aguero v United 8 goals in 8 PL games including 2 braces
Aguero v Spurs 10 goals in 7 PL games including a hat-trick and a brace
Aguero v Stoke 6 goals in 6 PL games including 2 braces

Aguero v Chelsea 3 goals in 8 PL games
Aguero v Liverpool 3 goals in 8 PL games
Aguero v Everton 2 goals in 7 PL games

Fixtures matter. Many strikers have teams they have a relatively good or bad record against, it's a psychological thing. Listening to someone like Shearer talk about it is fascinating. Fixtures matter. It's just that they aren't always the fixtures you think. 🙂

Hi lads, I have prepared two drafts for this season. One in case we have more certainty that Aguero will play, and one in case there is no such indication. Please take a look, and tell me what you think about either.

Both teams are drafted in with the same keeper combo Guzan - Schmeichel

    Team A(guero)

    Azpi - Mertesacker - O'Shea - Ward - Prodl

    Fab - Cazorla - Milner - Ritchie - Ki

    Rooney - Aguero - Sakho

    Team B

    Ivan - Mertesacker - O'Shea - Ward - Huth

    Hazard - Ozil - Mane - Ritchie - Ki

    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

Kind thanks for all of your comments.

With the WC changes this season, the general consensus is that the second one should be used on a DGW, so the first one might as well be used early. That leaves us with no mid-season refresh. Is anyone considering WC-ing late instead, around Christmas time, due to the lack of a Jan WC, or was it simply never that usefu? Just a thought, as I don't think I've seen anyone mention it.

That's a good point. I suppose there could be some value in WC-ing in mid December, making sure you have a strong bench, with no one injured/dropped/suspended, and only going with completely nailed on players like Williams, Shawcross, Hazard etc who you know will play every game over the festive fixtures.

I think theo will match alexis point for point when fit, and fabregas should keep touch with hazard... Whereas i don't expect silva/yaya/sterling to score anywhere near as heavily as kun.

So kun the only essential one out of the kun/haz/alexis trio.

Rooney could be set for 200+ this year, 10.5 looks really good value.

Long term, yes. You find value in your team to allow 2-3 spots to be just for pure points returns, whatever the cost. One of the 7.0 mids could easily do as well as all or most of the 8.5s, and then you'd expect Aguero to outscore Rooney

except 7.0mid is £1.5m less than 8.5 mid and Roonpig is £2.5m les than Aguero.

Good spot. Its never that simple though really, it assumes no other spots in the team could be downgrading to find better value

looking at the facts, I will agree im looking at getting, Aguero, Hazard, Rooney in my team, with choices as whether to go with ... Benteke/Kane or ARS mid as my other pick ..

My team with which I have been happy for a day(record for now)

Ruddy Butland - Decent 9.0 rotation

Iva Kosc Huth J.Gomez(good run for liverpool may just start, if not huth has a decent starting fix) Saylor(dont want to overspend on defense after iva and kosc)

Hazard Walcott Mane Kisung Aarons(might be the breakout; just keeping him instead of 4.5 dummies)

    Costa Benteke Sakho

    Butland (Hennessey)
Azpi Clyne Williams (Huth Steven Taylor)
Henderson Fàbregas Yaya Touré Walcott (Sinclair)
    Rooney Deeney Kane

£2.5m itb for Roonpig --> Aguero.

    Struggling with:

    Kane+Deeney or Benteke+Sakho

    Williams or Toby or Cedric?

Targett is short term, O'Shea could be pushed out by Coates and Kaboul (though its too soon to say). Would swap your three cheapest defender for some nailed on 4.5s. And Anya is likely to be rotated St best. Those are arguably the least important positions though - the rest is excellent!

    5. Mr. O'Connell
      • 12 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

GK 8/10 (same as mine) - could be stronger but a good use of the budget elsewhere
Def 23/25 (same as mine) - targett not nailed (nor is anyone else at 4.0 but could suffer a price drop and means you are maxed out on 3 Saints so will find it hard to jump on a bandwagon e.g. Pelle)
Mid 28/35 (I have Haz, Wally, Mane) - If Chadli is nailed he is a very good pick at that price
Fwd 22/30 (I have Rooney and Tekkers) - Not sold on Deeney

      81%

      Conclusion

Very good. I'd get rid of Targett though, as you don't want to max out your Saints quota on someone who won't play and it's very hard to shift 4.0 players

Of course he will. But that's not the question really. The question is whether you intend to use him as a captain option. If you do he is worth 11.5. If you don't then Cesc at 9.0 is probably better value.

              Yeah fair enough.

I'm not a fan of Costa. I'm never comfortable captaining him. YC magnet, BAp repellant and I think defenders have worked him out - wind him up and he plays terribly.

In his favour though, always does well against the Swans.

              1. Ruth_NZ
                • 9 Years

I think you may be biased by the general FFS negativity about Costa.

It was his first season in the PL and he took some time to get integrated into Chelsea's playing style (which is very different to what he was used to at AM). Early in the season he was mainly just finishing. As the season went on he became more and more involved in attacking play. The fact he had so few assists was just happenstance, he became increasingly creative as the season wore on and will get more assists this season.

The YC thing can also be put down partly to the new league although he's obviously a striker that plays "on the edge". The stamping incident where he (wrongly) got a 3 match ban got the lesson through about where the line is in England I think. As far as I recall he got one YC in all the rest of the season after that.

Put those 2 things together - more assists, less YCs - and he will do better on BPs this season. I am absolutely comfortable captaining him myself, more so than Eden (much as I love Hazard as a player). Therefore Costa will be in my long-term squad and Hazard won't.

I disagree. He's actually pretty popular on here. I see him in a lot of teams. But that's besides the point, his popularity doesn't change my opinion.

He's always been an 'on the edge' striker and I can't see his YC count falling. After the stamping incident he only played a few more games after that, so it's a very small sample size.

Hazard also has pens which is a big factor imo. Chelsea should have had a lot more pens last season, too.

                  1. Ruth_NZ

Hmmm. I think he's in a lot of teams on here as a placeholder for Aguero.

He played 8 games after the stamping incident. 1 yellow card. And you could see the difference, he had clearly reined it back a bit.

Anyway, it's a preference call really. I don't say either is right or wrong. Both are viable routes I think.

Yeah maybe. But I usually get scoffed at when I tell people I prefer other options.

Hmm are you sure it was 8? That seems a lot. He did seem to get more and more wasteful as the season got older too.

Yeah agreed. Hazard is still on pens right?

Yes, 8 including the C1C final. And I wasn't scoffing by the way.

Hazard is on pens "I think". But Falcao likes pens and Hazard missed a couple last season. Who knows.

I'm pretty sure Falcao will play a lot more then most on here believe. They are going on last season. Jose isn't. 🙂

Oh okay. That's certainly an improvement but there's no doubt he'll still pick up bookings, even if it is a little less than last season.

And nah I didn't imply it was you mate, I'm talking about others.

Oh okay, surely he'll remain on them - one of the best penalty takers in the world imo.

Yeah I agree, another negative for Costa imo (on paper)

I want Hazard but I don't really want Fabregas. If I don't go with Hazard I will more than likely have Costa in my team and no Fabregas.

          I honestly don't know how I would change...but I'm not a fan 4.5/4m keeper combo and Wanyama

I absolutely love that. I'll be off Pelle rather than Teke and Ivan over Azpil though.

hey guys, how about this line-up?

    courtois / hennesey

    kosc / huth - williams / o'shea - saylor (i know he's not nailed...)

    haz / silva / milner / chadli / ritchie

    roo / giroud / deeney

thinking SUN's fixtures good enough to keep o'shea in the first 11 even if saylor doesn't play and rotate ritchie and deeney according to fixtures.

Very nice. Little question mark over Giroud in terms of long term starts but he should start the season with Sanchez out

Saruman is evil, and will stab you in the back! Saylor not nailed on.

      Wooo, a fellow Surman owner!

Prefer Ozil (and Ramsey) to Cazorla and Ruddy/Rudd over Schmeichael/4.0 with Pearson gone. O'Shea potentially won't play, but probably will. Good team

      a 7

Not sure on Cedric, i like Ozil over Caz, get the Leicester back up keeper instead of Hennesey, unless Hen nails the start.
