Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Matt Ritchie

After a dazzling campaign for Championship winners Bournemouth, Matt Ritchie is very much at the forefront of Fantasy managers’ minds ahead of the 2015-16 season. The winger was the driving force behind the Cherries’ title triumph last year, picking up 15 goals and 17 assists in the league alone, and with a price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, there is every suggestion that he will justify selection in our squads.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the Gosport-born Scottish international. His role in Swindon’s 2012 promotion from the fourth tier earned him the League Two Player of the Season award and, after impressing from the off the following season, he was snapped up by Bournemouth in January 2013 before going on to pick up the League One Player of the Season award for 2012/13.

Ritchie hasn’t stopped impressing since and his sterling performances during the previous campaign earned him a Scotland call up, whilst he was also named in the Championship Team of the Year. Now it is time for the winger to prove himself at the top level…

KEY FACTORS

    • Fantasy managers love a trigger-happy midfielder and Ritchie certainly falls into that category. No midfielder managed more attempts on goal than the Cherries’ man (151) last season and the winger also fired in a goal attempt more frequently than any of his team-mates, registering 3.3 efforts per appearance. Impressively, an average of 24.7 minutes per shot would have placed him third amongst midfielders with a minimum of ten appearances last term – just ahead of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (25.4), albeit at a lower level. Having climbed from League Two to Premier League level in three years, there is no doubting that Ritchie has the ability to adapt to a new division – since the 2011-12 League One campaign, he has averaged 11.5 goals and 10.5 league goals per season.

    • Ritchie’s ability from long range could be a key factor. The Scotland international produced 100 of his 151 efforts from outside the area and is renowned for the power of his shooting and long-distance accuracy. Indeed, six of his 15 goals last year came from outside the box – a tally matched by only Christian Eriksen amongst Premier League midfielders from 2014/15. Although Bournemouth enjoyed the most possession of all Championship clubs in their promotion campaign, they will not expect to work the ball into the box quite so easily this term and Ritchie’s ability from distance could prove vital.

    • No Championship player managed more than Ritchie’s 17 assists last season. The club’s number one for dead-ball duties is by far the Cherries’ most creative player and will be vital in forging opportunities if Eddie Howe’s side are to avoid the drop. Ritchie provided 98 goal scoring opportunities for his team-mates in 2014/15, which equates to an average of 38.07 minutes per chance created. Compared to Premier League midfielders with a minimum of 20 appearances in the season gone by, this would have placed him tenth, just ahead of illustrious company such as Gylfi Sigurdsson (38.1 minutes) and Alexis Sanchez (39 minutes).

    • Although many promoted clubs tend to start cautiously in a bid to contain opponents, Eddie Howe is adamant that Bournemouth will continue with the same approach that saw the Cherries register an average 58.6% possession last year – more than any other side in the Championship. Discussing his approach over the summer, Howe’s determination to go on the attack can only be good news for Ritchie’s prospects:

“We always felt that, by implementing a football philosophy that could be transferable from League One to the Championship, and the Championship to the Premier League, it would give us more of a chance. If you rip it all up and start again just because you’re in the top division, it’s too difficult. I don’t think we’d forsake our principles just because we’ve gone up. Sure, if you could guarantee me success playing a different way, being more direct and crossing balls in earlier, then we’d look at it. But in the Premier League the best way to win is to dominate the ball. That’s what we seek to do.”

  • One look at the early schedule suggests potential suitors may want to get Ritchie on board in their initial squads. Although the Cherries face two away clashes in the first three rounds of fixtures, they are rated top of our season ticker for the first eight Gameweeks, with home clashes against Aston Villa, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford, in addition to trips to Norwich and Stoke, heightening their Fantasy potential from the outset.

Why is Mane so hyped on this site? I remember people couldn't wait to get rid of him last season. And he was 6.0-6.5 during that period.

    Anyone going 6.0 6.0 5.0 4.5 4.0 for defenders?

ie more or less playing the same 3 defenders week in week out, with the 4.5 coming on for a horrendous fixture or in case of the 3 doesn't play.

I might change Azpi to Ivan though, all depends if I decide to downgrade Rooney to Gomis.

Warming to a similar idea - Azpi, Kosc, PVA/Williams and coincidentally Huth as the 4th as well.

I was just trying to work out a 3-way 4.5 rotation for 1 spot but not too keen.

          Azpi, Jenkinson/ Francis, Huth/ O'Shea

Jenkinson and Francis rotate well for first 8 weeks at least.

Huth and Francis have good rotation except for wk 7 when both Jenkinson and Francis have nice fix so that's not a problem.

I may upgrade Azpi to Ivan.

      What about 6, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5?

Could play Azpi with 2 from O'Shea, Kaboul and Richards.

In GW2 & 3 you could easily play Courtois and double Sunderland than change it once you've got Aguero in.

You've actually got me thinking about something...pretty punty.

Azpi - double SUN - double LEI...GW7 would be the only headache for the first 10 GWs or so.

Abit off your suggestion, but inspired by it. Thoughts?

I looked at it and 2 & 3 was Sunderland, 4 was Villa (I think)

Only downside is I've had Azpi and Kos from the start and don't feel right to lose Kos but it defiantly works.

What do you think about losing Koscienly?

My thoughts are that it works but by picking 2 premiums you can spend all your transfers on attacking players as opposed to chasing defensive form, not sure if it's worth it.

Yea if i got this route, it's losing one of Azpi/Kosc...probably Kosc.

Azpi and Kosc have been the cornerstones of how i've lined up my defence but I know i have to remain upon minded.

Like you said, having 2 premium defenders does mean you can spend all transfers on attacking players - and it does seem Azpi and Kosc are as nailed on as it gets.

One lesson I learned last year is that spending transfers on defenders can definitely pay off...if you're investing in fixture blocks rather than defensive form though (Southampton were the exclusion - fantastic value considering defensive AND attacking form AND BPS for all their defenders)...

As a conclusion, i think it depends how far you're downgrading Kosc and whether or not you're actually freeing up money. For eg, you could be downgrading Kosc to a 4.5 and spreading 1.5 in attack....or downgrading Kosc to a 5.0 and spreading the rest on the other defenders. The former would make it more worth it personally

This is what I'm looking at so I'm not sure I'm gaining...

              Schmeichel / Schwarzer

              Azpi / Koscienly / Huth / O'Shea / Richards

              Hazard / Walcott / Milner / Ritchie / Sinclair

Costa / Rooney / Ritchie 1m in bank

All week I've been going Rooney & Sinclair to Sakho & Ramsey as I can't make up my mind on the extra mid or striker but losing Kos allows me to go Milner to Ramsey and have the best of both.

              What do you think?

                  In that case...

                  A) Hazard, Milner, Wilson

                  B) Fabregas, Ramsey, Sakho

To me it's obvious which the better option is.

                Hmm who's the 3rd striker?

I think your main issue is whether or no you need Hazard with Costa.

I might consider ditching Hazard for Fabregas...you get alot of Chelsea's attacking threat there and Costa is a great captain option.

The extra 2.5 million would upgrade Milner to Ramsey AND Ritchie to Sakho while keeping Kosc. Surely that's a better deal.

I think Walcott will play for the first 2 and fancy him to start well so won't lose him(he's also saved funds to hop on to a UTD midfielder that hits form) really want a high rank this year so it's impossible to lose Hazard IMO, Costa is only the Aguero placeholder with a decent enough fixture so don't want to lose him either.

Really want Ramsey though and feel it will be a mistake not to have him or Rooney so something has to give and can only see Koscienly and Milner as the sacrifices.

Is it worth losing a locked on premium defender for an upgrade on Milner or a second big striker.

Strikers at the mo are Costa, Rooney and Wilson mate.

And who would make way in midfield to fund Aguero? I think you might have too many transfers planned. Personally would want to be more flexible and get Aguero by GW3/4 once we get a better lay of the land.

I've cracked it, happy with it now without the double Sunderland and with everyone in I want, just means Koscienly changing to Mertersacker/Bellerin and Huth to a 4m defender.

Back on topic, defence is now Azpi, Mertersacker, O'Shea, Richards & 4m defender.

I'm planning on wildcarding GW4 so please critique based on that tactic.
    Schmeichel (Swaz)
    Mert, Clyne, Darmian, O'Shea, Targett
    Hazard, Walcott, Ozil, Depay, Anya
    Rooney. Benteke, Wilson

      Gks-who is Swaz?
I'm not keen on Clyne at all - one expensive defender maximum - which will probably be Azpi.
      Darmain could be anything.
Too much ARS in midpark. Rambo would be my choice rather than those two. Would probably have Santi as next best.
      Depay could be anything.
Like the forwards bar Wilson who could be someone much better if you weren't so wasteful in other areas.

      3/10.

      Keepers OK for 8.5
Keep two of the 5.5m defs and downgrade the other to a 5m or 4.5m. Probably Clyne.
I like the midfield and when you decide to bring in Aguero you can easily replace the worst performing of the 3.
The forwards are very solid and Wilson is probably the best option for the price.

1.avoid darmian for now..go for fonts(gr8 fixtures).targett cannot be classified as a shmptn cover
      2.maybe ozil/cazorla instead of wally
3.Mata instead of delay(on set pieces n penalties I think)
4.for now maybe wait for benteke to feature in a game at least b4 gw1..maybe pelle instead of him(awesome fixtures n form)

Quite a variety of opinions there, I'll throw in my 2 cents.

Not a fan of Clyne necessarily, question marks over Darmian starting the season (I have no doubt he'll get there quickly if not, but perhaps an unnecessary risk?). You know about Targett. Fine if you're planning to WC early.

Midfield is strong. Depay unproven, so he won't be in my team for the start, but could be a good option. Don't know that Anya as 5th mid is nailed, which is really all you want. That and not over the top ownership prone to drops (Wanyama). Fletcher perhaps?

Up front I like Rooney, and Wilson is flirting with my team due to budget constraints. Benteke is another question mark for me, I'd wait until he's played a bit under a new system before I jump on that wagon.

Overall, can certainly be improved, though not bad. Again though, just my opinion, which is just as valid as yours.

    Alright, shoot.

    Ruddy - Rudd
    Azpi - Kosc - Huth - O'Shea - Francis
    Fab - Walcott - Mane - Milner - (Fletcher)
    Costa - Rooney - Sakho

0.5 itb - probably to upgrade the 2nd keeper for a rotation. Suggestions?

Likes: Flexibility, Aguero easily accessible, balanced.
Dislikes: Hazard scares me, keepers questionable.

Was originally planning for a GW4 WC, though I wouldn't necessarily need it unless Hazard exploded.

Have an idea I just looked into (thought process triggered by Chill Pill above) - it's a little contentious given it's regarding defensive double ups...but would appreciate thoughts before dismissing it.

Considering structuring defence around Azpi + 2 sets of defensive double ups.

One thing I learned from last season is that doubling up on defence is a great differential, especially if you pick the right budget-mid priced defenders (Krul + Saylor, Guzan + Hutton, double LEI def, double SUN defence, Bertrand + Clyne at their starting prices rewarded owners last season at some point)

Currently thinking of Azpi + double SUN + double LEI. The only tricky GW for the first 10 GWs is GW7 where both teams play United or Arsenal.

SUN, NOR, SWA, bou, AVL, bou/stk, ARS, nor, wba, NEW

For the right weeks, one can whip out a double-up or play 1 from each team. Would appreciate thoughts on this approach, or if anyone has something similar lined up?

Yea, GKs could add another element to this approach, forgot to mention that. Come to think about it, I personally benefited alot from the Keeper + Def double up on multiple occasions last season. Krul + Saylor, Hutton + Guzan, Panti + PVA, Morgan + Schmeichel

I agree that there's certainly merit to defensive double-ups. I'd be hesitant to make the call on who to double up on before you have actually seen any of the defences in question in action though. Take Leceister for example - new manager, very two-sided season last year. They were horrendous for the majority. I'd rather see them in action before I commit to 2 of them.

Perhaps a strategy for GW4 onwards, once you've had a look at who's in form/who's starting, and may be in a position to WC?

      1. Shifty
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

Definitely a very valid point there. I wouldn't have issues with Sunderland but agree Leicester is a big question mark at the moment.

The thing is, I don't want to commit myself to a GW4 wildcard just yet. But for sure, it's all about the "is it too early to commit to 2 teams" argument at this stage. Might just go for it 😀

I once went with Kompany, Nasastic, Zabelta 4.0 4.0 and it was one of the best tactics I've ever done. City went on a well good run of keep clean sheets and Zabs/Kompany chipped in with attacking returns.

    Hazard/ Ozil/ Mata /Depay/ (Wanyama)

    B) 4-3-3 to start off. downgrade Ivan to Azpi to upgrade Costa to Kun when he is available.

    Clyne/ Huth/ Ivan/ Targett/ (S.Taylor)

      Tough choice.

I have a strong preference for 343 but am not convinced Depay will start well. Not many come over to the Premier League and start fast and there's far too many who looked great in Eredevise and struggled badly in the premiership.

Pros: on penalties till kun starts playing 60 odd minutes, raids forward in absence of kun sometimes for a odd goal or an assist..

Cons: many good attacking options in that price bracket..an extra .5m will give us sterling...otherwise there's mata, cazorla, ozil and many more..

      But these are my views..

Just my opinion, so don't make wholesale changes based on it.

The front line looks a little punty/weak. Benteke to a new club/system may take time to get going. Deeney untested in Premier. Gomis didn't play in Swansea V Reading and rumours of a move to Dubai.

Midfield 3 looks solid, Payet a punt, but he looks like he could be high scoring. Ritchie untested but good value at 6m

Back 5 are good for the money spent. Morgan misses the start of the season though.

I like Panti. Possibly would lose Ruddy and get 4m keeper and just play Panti. Gives 0.5m to upgrade somewhere else.

      Good luck
