Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Matt Ritchie

After a dazzling campaign for Championship winners Bournemouth, Matt Ritchie is very much at the forefront of Fantasy managers’ minds ahead of the 2015-16 season. The winger was the driving force behind the Cherries’ title triumph last year, picking up 15 goals and 17 assists in the league alone, and with a price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, there is every suggestion that he will justify selection in our squads.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the Gosport-born Scottish international. His role in Swindon’s 2012 promotion from the fourth tier earned him the League Two Player of the Season award and, after impressing from the off the following season, he was snapped up by Bournemouth in January 2013 before going on to pick up the League One Player of the Season award for 2012/13.

Ritchie hasn’t stopped impressing since and his sterling performances during the previous campaign earned him a Scotland call up, whilst he was also named in the Championship Team of the Year. Now it is time for the winger to prove himself at the top level…

KEY FACTORS

    • Fantasy managers love a trigger-happy midfielder and Ritchie certainly falls into that category. No midfielder managed more attempts on goal than the Cherries’ man (151) last season and the winger also fired in a goal attempt more frequently than any of his team-mates, registering 3.3 efforts per appearance. Impressively, an average of 24.7 minutes per shot would have placed him third amongst midfielders with a minimum of ten appearances last term – just ahead of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (25.4), albeit at a lower level. Having climbed from League Two to Premier League level in three years, there is no doubting that Ritchie has the ability to adapt to a new division – since the 2011-12 League One campaign, he has averaged 11.5 goals and 10.5 league goals per season.

    • Ritchie’s ability from long range could be a key factor. The Scotland international produced 100 of his 151 efforts from outside the area and is renowned for the power of his shooting and long-distance accuracy. Indeed, six of his 15 goals last year came from outside the box – a tally matched by only Christian Eriksen amongst Premier League midfielders from 2014/15. Although Bournemouth enjoyed the most possession of all Championship clubs in their promotion campaign, they will not expect to work the ball into the box quite so easily this term and Ritchie’s ability from distance could prove vital.

    • No Championship player managed more than Ritchie’s 17 assists last season. The club’s number one for dead-ball duties is by far the Cherries’ most creative player and will be vital in forging opportunities if Eddie Howe’s side are to avoid the drop. Ritchie provided 98 goal scoring opportunities for his team-mates in 2014/15, which equates to an average of 38.07 minutes per chance created. Compared to Premier League midfielders with a minimum of 20 appearances in the season gone by, this would have placed him tenth, just ahead of illustrious company such as Gylfi Sigurdsson (38.1 minutes) and Alexis Sanchez (39 minutes).

    • Although many promoted clubs tend to start cautiously in a bid to contain opponents, Eddie Howe is adamant that Bournemouth will continue with the same approach that saw the Cherries register an average 58.6% possession last year – more than any other side in the Championship. Discussing his approach over the summer, Howe’s determination to go on the attack can only be good news for Ritchie’s prospects:

“We always felt that, by implementing a football philosophy that could be transferable from League One to the Championship, and the Championship to the Premier League, it would give us more of a chance. If you rip it all up and start again just because you’re in the top division, it’s too difficult. I don’t think we’d forsake our principles just because we’ve gone up. Sure, if you could guarantee me success playing a different way, being more direct and crossing balls in earlier, then we’d look at it. But in the Premier League the best way to win is to dominate the ball. That’s what we seek to do.”

  • One look at the early schedule suggests potential suitors may want to get Ritchie on board in their initial squads. Although the Cherries face two away clashes in the first three rounds of fixtures, they are rated top of our season ticker for the first eight Gameweeks, with home clashes against Aston Villa, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford, in addition to trips to Norwich and Stoke, heightening their Fantasy potential from the outset.

    Barca attacking plan:

    1) Shoot on target =Failure, De Gea the brick wall in goal.
    so
    2) Get it in off the inside of the post (also failing currently)
    3) Pray for an own goal

(Currently on the 3rd objective I believe...)

He's been further forward than Rooney a lot of the time and has been making intelligent runs. I've counted 3 times this game against Barca where if a player with more vision had of played the pass, he'd have been in 1 on 1 with the keeper.

      Want some fun?

This is a personal invitation to Wild Rover

Draft Fantasy Football seems to be flavour of the month. I've always wanted to play but my mates aren't FPL addicts so there wasn't any point starting one up. I was advised of this game in the community article and it's brilliant. Everything is the same as FPL except no captains and no bonus points. I'm looking to play in a league with 7 other players who are committed to play till the end. I'm giving this invitation to posters on here who I recognize as regulars as that will hopefully mean a strong league with committed players. Have a look at the format in the link below and enter if you're up for it.

      https://draftfantasyfootball.co.uk
      League ID: 3TDACSyND9wxBgond
      Password: ffskinnear

The league settings aren't final, I can make adjustments once we have full players. You are allowed 5 teams in different leagues if you want to play in other leagues.

Please don't enter uninvited and don't be offended as it's essential to have active players in a draft league. Feel free to use the website to set up your own leagues

We currently have Epic, Billy, Parm and Balders

I think the fact that United are beating Barca in this friendly means they are the best team in Europe and will win the Champions League.

I'm going to get 3 of their players in for FPL and put a bet on them winning everything next season.

You're forgetting that Messi must be the 'mystery' player too - and they're just using Pedro as a smokescreen. Messi didn't play in this match because Utd have told Barca they won't sign him if he gets injured pre-season. Messi clearly going to Utd cos they're better.

Premier League clubs will earn between £100m and £150m from TV rights this season depending on finishing position. The club that finishes 20th and is relegated will earn as much as Chelsea earned last season as champions.

Hence the inflation in transfer fees.

Wakey my old Aussie and Iran teammate. I've been waiting for you

This is a personal invitation to Wakey

Looks right. Question is what happens with Sanchez?

        a) Walcott moves wide right, Ramsey or Cazorla make way
        b) Walcott plays as striker, Giroud makes way
        c) Walcott makes way

I doubt even Wenger knows the answer yet. And that is without even considering Oxlade-Chamberlain who is also very talented.

Arsenal midfield will be easier for FPL managers to work with once they get a couple of injuries, which they usually do early season. 😕

  27. WHY ALWAYS MESUT?
    • 10 Years
    8 years, 10 months ago

    Experimenting with a 4-4-2.

    Schmeichel / 4.0
    Azpi / Kos / Clyne / Cedric / 4.5
    Walcott / Hazard / Ozil / Mane / 4.5
    Costa / Sakho / 5.5

    Thoughts?

Think it might be worth a look, really.

    1. Ruth_NZ
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

Can't be right. The 4-4-2 structure has to be:

      xxx xxx
      xxx xxx xxx 4.5 4.5
      xxx xxx xxx xxx 4.5
      xxx xxx 5.0

The two 4.5 defenders are a rotation pair, the 4.5 mid and 5.0 striker (Jerome) are benched. Anything else is sub-optimal use of funds unless you really think you can make an attacking rotation work and are willing to vary between 4-4-2 and 4-3-3.

That's the problem with 4-4-2. There is no nailed 4.5 striker so you have to have a 5.0 on the bench. Not ideal.

      1. WHY ALWAYS MESUT?
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

It doesn't "have" to be anything.

It is completely acceptable to use 4 fixed defender slots and rotate Sakho/Deeney on my forward slot instead.

          • 9 Years
          8 years, 10 months ago

Acceptable - well, yes, you can do anything you want within FPL rules.

I was talking about what appears to be optimal.

            • 10 Years
            8 years, 10 months ago

Fair. But what appears to be optimal may not be so necessarily. Did a lot of research showing premium defenders tend to be worth the money - that's why I'm not sure of the usual rotation strategies.

            1. Ruth_NZ

              8 years, 10 months ago

I have done a lot of research about it too. I know what the case is. I will be playing 4-3-3 and said so 2 months ago.

If you want the reasons I don't believe your structure is optimal I'll give them to you.

Structure for 4-4-2 (in answer to the above and as short as I can make it):

GKs not more than 9.5, personally I prefer a 5.0/4.5 rotation with the prices as they are but I wouldn't argue with a 4.5/4.5 rotation. The 4.5/4.0 from the same team as you have it (Schmeichel/Schwarzer) does save 0.5/1.0 but it means you have 4.0 as "dead" budget rather than utilising it. You would have to be very unlucky for a Fabianski/Schmeichel rotation not to justify the extra 1.0 over having to play Schmeichel every week.

Defenders - 3 premium and a 4.5 defender rotation. The principle is that a 38/38 defender rotation offers benefits (and savings) and you lose efficiency if you ignore that completely. Home clean sheets outweigh away clean sheets by a factor of 50% (3 to 2) season after season.

What you have above could possibly be worth the extra 0.5 if your 4.5 defender is Norwich (Olsson/Martin) and you rotate them with Soares. Southampton have been much more solid at St Mary's and Norwich are at home whenever Southampton are away. But 4.5/4.5 for the last 2 defender positions probably uses funds most efficiently.

In additional explanation, you have to factor in the fact that you are forced to have 5 defenders in your squad. The value of premium defenders I am not arguing about, I posted about it months ago. But the value delivered by a 5.0 defender playing every week is unlikely to beat the value delivered by a good 4.5/4.5 rotation. By using the rotation you rescue 4.5 from being "dead" budget to being utilised budget. (Soares/Olsson and rotating them is 0.5 more expensive but you would have a chance of Soares' attacking points and Southampton's home clean sheet value justifying that 0.5. Soares would need to deliver 0.6 points per home game more than a 4.5 alternative to do that and he might do.)

The midfield structure looks correct as you have it with a 4.5 bench midfielder. That's optimum for 3-4-3 and also for 4-4-2.

Your forward structure relies on an attacking rotation and they are notoriously hard to get right. By having the cheapest possible playing striker (currently Jerome) as your bench forward you concentrate your budget optimally and can use FTs to rotate the front 6 positions.

By downgrading Soares to a 4.5 and Deeney to Jerome you would effectively nail 9 positions in your squad and be saying that you won't use FTs on them except in case of injury loss of place in their teams. You free an additional 1.0 for the remaining 6 positions where you intend to use all your FTs unless forced by circumstances. That brings (for example) Costa to Aguero into reach with 2 FTs (Mane to Milner/Chadli and Costa to Aguero) without having to weaken your midfield any more than you need to.

I am not commenting on player choices, just on the structure. That's the rationale of it according to me. Though with the pricing as it is I think 4-3-3 works better myself.
