Scout Report – Ibrahim Afellay

Stoke City made their eighth signing of the summer yesterday afternoon, snapping up Dutch winger Ibrahim Afellay. The 29-year-old arrives on a two-year deal after his contract at Barcelona expired over the close season, becoming the fourth former player from the La Liga club to make the move to the Britannia.

Discussing the deal yesterday afternoon, the Potters’ assistant boss Mark Bowen revealed that Afellay has been on Mark Hughes’ radar for a number of years:

“He’s obviously got a fantastic pedigree. He’s been unlucky over the years with injuries and two or three really bad injuries have made his career stutter a bit. Realistically, that’s one of the reasons Stoke have been able to acquire him. When we were at Man City, Mark tried to bring him in then, so we’ve finally got our man and we know the qualities he will bring. It’s just a case of keeping him fit and well, but last year he played 29 times for Olympiacos and so he proved he can manage his fitness.”

The History

Brought up in Utrecht, Netherlands, Afellay started out at local club VSK, before joining USV Elinkwijk one year later. From 1996, he spent seven years cutting his teeth at PSV Eindhoven’s youth academy, making his senior debut in a Dutch cup fixture at the age of 17.

After recording two appearances in the 2003/04 Eredivisie campaign, Afellay enjoyed an increased role the next term but was restricted to just seven outings (two goals and a pair of assists) because of a broken toe. The 2005/06 season saw the Netherlands international installed as a regular starter, with Afellay managing two goals and an assist in 23 league outings.

Over the next five seasons, the Utrecht-born wide man evolved into a key player for the Peasants, tallying 32 goals and 16 assists in 127 appearances. Barcelona then came calling, snapping up Afellay in the 2011 January transfer window.

Afellay got a run out in all but six of the Catalan giant’s remaining La Liga ties that term, notching one goal in 16 outings. He required surgery for an anterior cruciate ligament rupture in September the following year, limiting him to four appearances. Informed by Barca boss Tito Villanova that he’d struggle to earn pitch time during the 2012/13 season, Afellay chose to team up with Schalke on a season-long loan deal.

A solid start with the Bundesliga outfit – which harvested two goals in 10 outings – was soon curtailed as injury struck again: Afellay sustained successive muscle tears that ruled him out for the remainder of the season. More surgery sidelined him for the first half of the 2013/14 La Liga campaign, with the fleet-footed Dutchman clocking up just four minutes upon his return to the Barca set-up. Afellay then spent last term on loan to Olympiacos, where he bagged four goals and three assists across 19 appearances.

Notwithstanding his pockmarked injury record, Afellay has chalked up an impressive 50 caps for Oranje, netting six goals in the process. He wasn’t involved in the 23-man squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup but has made five starts for Netherlands since that tournament.

The Prospects

A left winger by trade, Afellay will be hoping to fill the void left upon the expiry of Victor Moses’ loan deal. Certainly, the fact that Jose Mourinho has been willing to afford the Nigerian international significant minutes in pre-season suggests that he’s looking to incorporate him into the Blues’ squad next term, ruling out a return to the Britannia.

Assuming Hughes retains his favoured 4-2-3-1 set-up when the new season gets underway, Afellay is likely to challenge Marko Arnautovic for starts on the left flank. There’s certainly no guarantee that the Potters’ newest recruit will triumph in that internal contest, however, given that Arnautovic has excelled during the close season, netting once in two outings and generally injecting a touch of class into Stoke’s offensive repertoire.

A more likely scenario will find Arnautovic – as the most versatile of the pair – shifted out to the right flank, with Afellay hugging the left touchline and Bojan Krkic operating at the number ten berth. As a consequence, Jonathan Walters – who’s missed just 14 league ties during his five years at the Staffordshire club – can no longer boast security of starts, lessening his appeal as a mid-priced asset.

This scenario, of course, would require the Dutchman to remain injury free for the upcoming campaign – given that the last time he tallied 20 or more appearances in a season was back in 2009/10 with PSV, it’s fair to say that there has to be question marks over his ability to steer clear of the treatment table. Furthermore, it’s worth noting that reports today in the Ukrainain press indicate the Potters are still chasing the £14m-rated Andriy Yarmolenko from Dynamo Kiev. The winger has already talked positively over a potential move to the Britannia and, should he also arrive, would surely leap up the pecking order, given the substantial outlay.

In terms of pricing, Afellay looks likely to come in around 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, putting him on a par with the rest of Stoke’s main midfielders such as Arnautovic, Walters and Charlie Adam.

Looking at the fixtures, Stoke’s opening run (LIV, tot, nor, WBA, ars,) is likely to temper any major interest in Hughes’ main assets until the schedule smiles kindly from Gameweek 6 onwards. By then, we should get a better idea of whether the Dutchman can make his mark in Hughes’ first XI or whether the Potters boss will court caution with his fitness over the first few months in order to avoid any further injury setbacks.

    I thought I would re-post this that I posted this morning now it is busier for more eyes to have a look over...

    A lot of people are using defensive rotations for both keepers and defenders, based on getting a player playing at home each week. However below is a table (hopefully it will present correctly) of Home & Away clean sheets for each team last season.

    Team HCS ACS

    Chelsea 11 6
    Southampton 11 4
    Manchester City 9 5
    Arsenal 8 5
    Everton 8 2
    West Bromwich A 8 8
    West Ham United 7 2
    Manchester United 6 5
    Liverpool 6 8
    Swansea City 6 7
    Sunderland 6 7
    Leicester City 6 4
    Stoke City 5 4
    Tottenham Hotspur 5 4
    Newcastle United 5 3
    Aston Villa 4 6
    Crystal Palace 3 4

    Bournemouth * 10 9
    Norwich * 6 8
    Watford * 7 8

    HCS - Home clean sheets
    ACS - Away clean sheets
    * - Championship stats

    Looking at the stats, popular teams selected for defensive rotations don't do as well at home as you might first think with most doing just as well away as at home.

    Sunderland, Swansea & Liverpool all seem to be keeping it slightly tighter on the road, while teams such as Stoke & Spurs are only marginally keeping more at home than away and West Brom sharing their clean sheets out equally.

    The most noticeable teams that look great for home rotations are Everton & West Ham (will this continue under Bilic?) with a 80% & 78% clean sheet hit at home respectively.

    I am not saying this "limited" sample size should destroy our rotations but it's worthwhile considering for those of use placing such importance on a home fixture.

        I think West Ham will be solid under Bilic but will this still be more at home than away or will the clean sheets even out more under the new manager?

            I really don't see them this way. This isn't how Billic tends to play. He usually has his teams playing very organised and as a whole unit and they seem to be fairly solid defensively.

      this happends every season with the lower table teams aka teams used for rotation, which is why im against it. fabianski or panti for example, you'd be mad to only play them at home. same has happened eariler to begovic, foster, mannone etc.. good post

        This goes for keeper rotation only though. I'm against that aswell, as away games usually means more saves and potential BP if they keep the odd CS aswell.

        For defenders there's the attacking potential of home games aswell as no save points for those tricky away games.

      I like better rotation pairs with good fixtures, no matter if they play away or home 😉

      I think there is higher hope of gettin CS versus mid/lowtable club at away match than gettin CS versus top8 club at home, don't you think? 😉

          No they don't. The sample size of one team and one season is too small (see my post below). Additionally you haven't analysed which teams clean sheets were achieved against. Not that I'm saying you should - I'm just saying that you don't have the data to draw that conclusion.

          "Sunderland, Swansea & Liverpool all seem to be keeping it slightly tighter on the road..." Again no. They did last season. That doesn't mean they will this season. That conclusion is not supported by the data offered.

      Good read and very valid point. However, a lot of Keeper/defensive rotations are for the 'easier' fixture rather than just home and away. Important to consider that

      I think the mid to lower teams get a more evenly matched up clean sheet ratio because they will often play very deep and "park the bus" away from home.

      Mainly this highlights the importance of going for fixture ease rather than H/A when selecting rotating players unless they are West Ham defenders.

      Very good post. I have always considered home fixtures superior (and still do), but often looked at the fixtures themselves rather than just if they are home or away. I do think sometimes the H/A rotation is overstated in importance.

        Statistically it has been close to 3 home clean sheets to 2 away clean sheets season after season in the PL. That's the 10-year average. It's also last season's average (pretty close) - 35% home clean sheets, 29% overall clean sheets, 24% away clean sheets.

        You can make what you want of that but the statistics indicate that if you have two comparable teams that rotate perfectly and play the home defender every week you should do 15% better on average than by playing one of them home and away.

        In any given season (when any team plays only 38 games compared to the 3800 games analysed for the 10-year average) it is quite possible for a different result to occur. The sample size is very small for any one team and we have all seen teams have seasons where they get more clean sheets away than at home. But the fact remains that you must have 5 defenders even if you only play three and by using h/a rotation wisely you can edge the odds in your favour.

          I agree with you re the data size is too small to draw conclusions but your analysis is not addressing the question which is whether the increase in home clean sheets is mostly or fully attributable to top 10 teams which tend to have defenders priced above the 4.5m rotation maximum.

          I suspect you are right and there is a home bias across the bottom teams as well but it is not proven in what you post.

            ...and I don't intend to prove it either. It wasn't me that drew unwarranted conclusions from the data. In any case, the idea that "weaker" teams have an inherent tendency to accrue more away clean sheets is utterly irrational.

              Fair enough re not proving it as its a load of work that i'm not going to do either.

              However, its not 'utterly irrational' that weaker teams could have an inherent tendency to accrue a higher proportion of clean sheets away compared to top teams

              Here is a rational explanation
              - weaker teams tighten up away and try and sneak a pt, where as they go harder for the win at home because you need to win some of your home games to stay up
              - top teams need to win games home & away to have any chance of top 4 so attack more for both

              A valid hypothesis backed up by last seasons results until proven otherwise with a larger data set.

                These things annoy me. I randomly picked Aston Villa, typically a bottom half team and a common rotation option with cheaper defenders:

                2005/06 Home CS 8 Away CS 3 Finished 11th
                2006/07 Home CS 9 Away CS 4 Finished 11th
                2007/08 Home CS 5 Away CS 4 Finished 6th
                2008/09 Home CS 8 Away CS 4 Finished 6th
                2009/10 Home CS 7 Away CS 8 Finished 6th
                2010/11 Home CS 7 Away CS 0 Finished 9th
                2011/12 Home CS 4 Away CS 5 Finished 16th
                2012/13 Home CS 4 Away CS 1 Finished 15th
                2013/14 Home CS 4 Away CS 5 Finished 15th
                2014/15 Home CS 4 Away CS 6 Finished 17th

                Total over 10 seasons: 60 home clean sheets, 40 away clean sheets, bang on the 3 to 2 average. If someone wants to do other clubs please be my guest. 😕

              My conclusions were all based on last season where I stated it was a limited sample size. I used the data at hand to highlight potential trends per last season. I haven't stated that this has to happen the same each and every year so why not wind your neck in, instead of making out I've just set a complete new set of compulsory fantasy rules that everyone must adhere too.

          Ruth i think you have nailed it here. This data is incredibly misleading imo. A huge point for me is that when i pick a cheap defender i don't play them against the likes of MUN, CHE, ARS etc. I pick them for fixtures against the likes of WBA, SUN, AVL etc.

      Good post!

      I had actually noticed this when was using the members tool for the first team. As a result I now have 3 permanent defenders from top teams.

      The 2 4.5's will only feature when the top teams play each other.

      You can still rotate 4.5's but I would only do it according to the level of the opposition rather than whether it is home/away

      I completely agree that a team's defensive prowess and form, even in tough fixtures as West Brom proved time and again last season, should be valued above an easier fixture by a more questionable team. Swansea, Southampton, West Brom and Everton are those non-top 4 sides with defensive ability at least for spells each season. Maybe Stoke will return this year and maybe a new team rises to the fore...

      Your post is very insightful Smurf, thank you!

      If it were to be taken at face value. Then one should base teams on difficulty rotation combos instead (say for example using FFS fixture ticker) under the assumption that teams which you would rotate with get clean sheets against weak teams.

      At this point the most useful evidence, if somebody would be kind enough to produce it, would be to see which type of teams weak sides keep clean sheets with, tabulated for home and away. Basically do weak teams keep clean sheets against weak sides (likely because the opponents attack is weaker) or do weak teams keep clean sheets against strong sides (likely because they play more defensively)?

    Rate or hate? Was debating between the idea of Hazard and Ritchie over Fabregas and Eriksen, the former gives me another captain option but I think the latter will earn more points early on. Is Huth nailed on? Thanks in advance.

      It's not really any more of a problem than if he was staying.

      Mourinho really rates Azpilcueta and I find it hard to believe they'll go out and buy someone to come in and be number one choice. In which case Azpilcueta will still start the majority of games.

    Are the top players from the previous season gonna be worth their money? I see so many good options for lower prices, which is making me doubt it every time again... especially in midfield. Which are 'must haves' and which ones not?

    Hazard--> 11,5
    Sanchez--> 11,0
    Silva--> 10,0
    Aguero--> 13,0
    Costa--> 11,0
    Ivanovic--> 7,0
    Terry--> 7,0

      Yup - not a lot that can be done about that other than educating people.

      1. Spectrum-FFS Doubles Champ
        • 12 Years

        No agreed. They don't bother me to be honest. What happens on the RMT thread is people only want to put their own team up and can't be bothered sticking around to rate others so the people then come on here and when questioned say well no one replied over there

          Yeah it is a bit of a vicious circle and one I'm not sure there's an easy fix for. We are monitoring people's RMT spam though and action taken where necessary.

          Will have to continue to educate but as FPL and FFS get more popular there will always be new people to educate so the cycle continues 🙂

        I don't think it's going to matter anyway . The vast majority of posts are going to be should I have such and such a player and should I get a or b and people will complain because they can't make a decision without seeing their whole team . Most of my posts are like this

          Well I certainly prefer having options than just a "tell me what's right/wrong with the team".

          I don't think most people have a huge issue with RMTs if it's displayed as:

          Here's my team
          Here's what I'm thinking
          Here's what I'm not sure about

          Rather than
