Scout Reports

Scout Report – Jose Angel Crespo

Cordoba defender Jose Angel Crespo became Aston Villa’s fourth defensive recruit of the summer, after arriving earlier today for a reported fee of just £500,000. The 28-year-old follows Mark Bunn, Micah Richards and Jordan Amavi to the Midlands as Tim Sherwood continues to restructure his first-team squad.

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Sherwood revealed he’s a long-term admirer of the new recruit:

“Jose is a player who has been on our radar for some time and we’re really pleased to secure his signature. He is an experienced player who has played in La Liga and Serie A, two of the strongest leagues in Europe, and from speaking to him I know he can’t wait to play for Aston Villa.”

The History

Born in Andalusia, Crespo worked his way up the youth ranks at Sevilla after joining them as a 15-year-old. After two years of training at their academy, he made his senior debut for Los Rojiblancos midway through the 2005/06 La Liga campaign. Crespo managed a further two league starts that term, spending the remainder of his time turning out for their reserve outfit.

Crespo earned just 23 first-team appearances at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán over the next three seasons while tallying three goals in 73 outings for the B team. In pursuit of a regular starting berth, the Spain U21 international then made the switch to Racing Santander for the 2009/10 campaign. Unfavoured during his stint with the Cantabria club, Crespo notched just 13 appearances over the course of the season.

Having been released by Sevilla in the summer of 2010, the Spaniard plotted a route to Serie B side Padova, where he chalked up one goal in 43 appearances. He then transferred to Serie A outfit Bologna the following summer, recording just seven appearances (three starts) during his debut campaign with the Red-Blues.

Crespo dropped down to Serie B for the 2012/13 season, carding 14 appearances in a year-long loan spell at Verona. With a return to Bologna harvesting only 10 appearances throughout the 2013/14 campaign, Crespo went out on loan to Cordoba last summer. Despite failing to register a single goal or assist across 27 appearances, Crespo signed a permanent deal with the Spanish club earlier this month before making his move to Villa.

At international level, he made a total of 15 appearances for the Spanish U19, U20 and U21 sides but has never been selected for senior duties.

The Prospects

The versatile Crespo offers Sherwood an option right across the back-four slots. Last season at Cordoba, he started 26 times – 14 as a centre-half, nine at left-back and three of the right of defence – whilst in his final year with Bologna, he primarily lined up on the right of midfield.

Whether he can do enough to justify a starting berth is another matter entirely. Crespo averaged less than 15 appearances per season over the past four years, with his most recent stint at Cordoba marking just the second time in his career that he’s been afforded a prolonged run of starts. Having accrued just 83 outings in the top tier of Spanish and Italian football, he may well prove no more than back-up in a defence that was hit hard by injuries in 2014/15.

Certainly, new boy Jordan Amavi looks nailed-on at left-back, given the significant outlay, and with Micah Richards and Ciaran Clark currently shaping up to be the Villains’ favoured centre-back partnership, one would imagine that Crespo needs to displace Alan Hutton at right-back to earn a spot in Tim Sherwood’s starting XI. Given that Leandro Bacuna also offers an option for that position, it looks by no mean certain that Crespo will find his way into the starting XI.

In terms of fixtures, Sherwood’s side have a decent start, with showdowns against Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six. The fact that Villa conceded 57 times last term – the third worst defence in the top-flight – suggests investment may be hard to come by for Sherwood’s backline regulars.

Setting you back 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Crespo is identically priced to Richards, though the former City defender looks a far more secure pick if you’re looking at cut-price options.

For those prepared to shell out more, Amavi (5.0) netted four goals last term and crafted more key passes (32) than all but seven Premier League defenders. Bacuna, meanwhile, has been stationed on the right of midfield in pre-season and could offer us an out-of-position option – the Dutchman racked up five assists as a right-back in just 983 minutes at the end of last term and also has a share of set-pieces.

Given that the likes of Southampton’s Cedric Soares and the West Brom defence are also available for 5.0, though, it looks very unlikely that many will be prepared to splash out on a porous backline that has plenty of convincing still to do.

Considering there are sooo many options in attack and defense at a similar price point it could be a smart move to start the season with 0.5 in the bank so that you can make a swap between a player if required without having to knee jerk straight a few hours after the GW 1 🙂 .

Always try to save a transfer after GW1. Definitely won't be hopping on bandwagons after just 1GW (how many games does it take for them to become proper reliable bandwagons?)

Of course if my hand is forced then that changes things.

part of me is tempted...you could try 3-5-2 with deeney/defoe as your bench player

but it's probably better to play it when you have defensive injuries

also later in the season you'll probably have a better bench player than wanyama or whoever else you've got just now

              • 9 Years
              8 years, 10 months ago

But that's the point - with so many expensive options potentially out it is quite easy to generate a strong GW1 team where the cheapest midfielder or forward is ~6m.

                • 15 Years
                8 years, 10 months ago

yes...but if one of your attackers doesn't play you've 100% wasted your chip because a defender will auto-sub in...I'm not saying you shouldn't do it in week 1, just that I don't think it's likely to be the best opportunity

in particular you need to be sure you're going to be happy with a pricey bench player

True, though they would quickly be downgraded to kickstart the Aguero fund. 🙂

                    8 years, 10 months ago

well that's a dubious plan imo because you'll need 3 transfers to get Aguero and unexpected things will happen...you really need more than one way to get him using just 2 transfers

Sticking to the theme of overlooked midfielders..
Tadic @7m is barely getting a mention. Was all the rage last preseason @7.5 cause he'd be on set pieces and maybe penos for the Saints.. and nothing has changed! infact he's priced 0.5 cheaper and has a full EPL season under his belt. Lost his form and confidence after his injury last season but he is fully fit now and it's his place in the starting 11 to lose(and tbh he'd prob be dropped from our fpl sides before being dropped from the Soton 11 if he loses form). Huge upside and a cheap way of getting Soton attack with their great fixtures

"it's his place in the starting 11 to lose"...they have europa league and lots of players competing with him...if I was confident Pelle was likely to play well I'd be keener on Tadic

It is his place to lose though.. However, i'm looking at a short timeline of 4 weeks. Over 38 weeks he defo will lose minutes. Dont like to look at a timeframe beyond 5 weeks at so early in the season however

Long is purely backup at this point..
Looking at a timeline of 4 weeks(fixtures stiffen after that ie wba MUN che liv) and i doubt Jrod will be fit enough over that period based on koeman's comments. And Juanmi is as of yet unproven to take one of pelle/jrod/mane's role. it''s prob be davis/jwp in the hole

it's his cheap price compared to Mane/Pelle and the fact i only want a Soton attacker for 4 weeks(should be as nailed as anyone over that period) that makes me want him..
wba MAN che liv between GW 5 and GW 10 are not easy fixtures and i'd prob want to get rid of my Soton attack by then

I'd say he's been considered quite a bit too.

Main difference this year is there's quite a few options in the 7m and 8.5m brackets so there's not really a template yet and as such Tadic won't be in loads of teams.

Posted this last night but want to generate more discussion in the DZ 🙂

Anyone considering Mahrez? Ranieri has stated he'll continue with the 3-4-1-2 formation and there are no other contenders for the no. 10 role, and not that it would matter anyway since Mahrez shone at the end of last season there. He'll also be on most set pieces following the departure of Cambiasso, and we all know Leicester opening fixtures are good. Also, his stats over the whole season are very impressive for his price, only 5.5.

I would have him at 5.0 as 5th mid. Awkward at 5.5. Bigger fish to fry.

Wasn't he primarily a winger last season, now he has the no.10 role? Who has he replaced?

Cheeky new grav, hardly recognised ya 😉

Well, as I mention above Ranieri himself has stated that he'll continue with the same formation.

Leicester have no other no. 10 type players. Mahrez is usually a winger but was moved there late last season and played excellently.

"I have seen they are solid when they play three at the back. So we can either play with three midfielders or two in the middle and two on the flank."

Mahrez is the obvious choice to play in the hole in the 3-5-2, but there's a chance he'll miss out if they switch to a 3-4-3...

      1. Nickofoz
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 9 Years

If he did say that then I'd say he'd still be nailed on as one of the two wingers in a 3-4-3. That's his natural position and I doubt he'd stick two of Vardy/Nugent/Kramaric/Okazaki there instead of Mahrez.

I'm almost sure I've seen a quote saying Ranieri will play 3-4-2-1....

That's what he has been playing in pre season anyway

Yeah definitely. Has he made his way into your team yet, Doos?

And you didn't see my message last night. It was in regards to Tadic. You wrote him off because he had poor stats in the last ten matches. But that was when Tadic was carrying a groin injury and was in and out of the team.

To properly assess players performance it's only fair to look at stats over the whole season, if you do then you'll see Tadic's stats are actually quite impressive 🙂

          Not yet, no.

My point was, that you definitely have to wait until you are sure that he is in form. There are too many other good goal-scoring options:

Hazard(c), Cazorla(vc), Chadli, Ki Sung-Yeung, Wanyama and your man.

Yeah I agree. But Mahrez is better value than most of the 7.0's IMO, and I'd certainly prefer him to Ki

Well more often than not when Tadic was playing Mane was also on the pitch. But yes it still would be good to see that. I think Tadic's drop off was more correlated to his injury, though.
