Scout Report – Chancel Mbemba

On Thursday, Newcastle raided Anderlecht for the second time this summer, signing defender Chancel Mbemba for a fee reportedly in the region of £8.5 million. The 20-year-old has penned a five-year deal at St James’ Park, and will join up with his team-mates in the middle of next week once his overseas work visa is granted.

Speaking to the club’s official website about his move to Tyneside, the DR Congo international expressed his happiness at securing a move to the Premier League:

“I know the team very well. I’ve watched the Premier League and I know this is a massive team with big players and with a great coach. I’ve come here to Newcastle United because it’s a very good move in my career to play for such a famous club. I am excited for the season ahead.”

THE HISTORY

Mbemba began his footballing journey in the DR Congo, playing for E.S. La Grace and FC MK Etancheite in Kinshasa during his youth career, before joining Anderlecht in 2011. Confusion over Mbemba’s birth date meant he initially was limited to playing with the reserves as the investigation was carried out, with the defender eventually making his first team debut in a 3-2 defeat to Lokeren in the opening match of the 2013/14 campaign. He immediately became a regular in the starting XI, and made 40 appearances in all competitions, scoring an impressive six goals and grabbing a single assist, playing his part as Anderlecht won the Belgian Pro League.

Last season, Mbemba made 36 appearances for the Belgian outfit, including all six of Anderlecht’s Champions League matches, and registered three goals and one assist. After making his international debut for DR Congo in 2012, Mbemba has gone on to make 17 appearances for his country.

THE PROSPECTS

Given the considerable outlay, it’s fair to say that Mbemba appears very likely to establish himself in the starting XI at St James’ Park sooner rather than later. Speaking about his latest signing, head coach Steve McClaren outlined what qualities the centre-back will bring to the squad:

“He is a proven performer at the highest level, he’s powerful, combative and will add quality to our defence. He also has an eye for goal which is an extra asset for us. We will get him integrated into the squad quickly once he is with us. Unfortunately, due to the time it takes to process the visa application that won’t be in time for our final friendly on Saturday, but our focus will be to make sure he will be ready and available as soon as possible.”

The defender’s late arrival places doubt as to whether he will feature in McClaren’s thoughts for the Gameweek 1 home clash against Southampton, but the mention of Mbemba’s “eye for goal” will certainly strike a chord with Fantasy managers.

In terms of the Magpies defensive set-up for the season ahead, much depends on the future of Fabricio Coloccini. The Argentine is a doubt for the start of the season with an Achilles injury and may well be set to leave the club anyway, with rumours of a move to Crystal Palace growing. Should Coloccini indeed depart, Mbemba is likely to be partnered by one of Mike Williamson, Paul Dummett or Steven Taylor, whilst England U21 international Jamaal Lascelles has featured throughout pre-season under McClaren and may even be in contention.

Taking a look at Mbemba’s defensive statistics from his six Champions League outings last term, he averaged 2.5 tackles and 3.3 interceptions per match, turning in some very favourable displays that have drawn comparisons with City skipper Vincent Kompany. In the Premier League last season, Coloccini only managed 1.9 tackles and 2.2 interceptions per 90 minutes, while Williamson logged just 1.1 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game. Certainly based on those statistics, it’s easy to see why the DR Congo international is expected to quickly nail down a role in McClaren’s first XI once he has settled into life in the North East.

Much depends on his cost across the Fantasy games, though. Right-back Daryl Janmaat is the only Newcastle defender to be priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, with all the other members of the backline bar Taylor (4.0) available for 4.5. Given Mbemba’s aerial threat from set-pieces, there’d be no real surprise if he joins the Dutch international in the 5.0 price bracket, but should he be valued at 4.5, the young centre-back could prove to be something of a bargain. Ideally, though, Fantasy managers will be hoping for Taylor to nail down a role alongside the new boy, affording us a rare 4.0-priced starter for our five-man backlines.

Newcastle’s tough opening schedule, however, will mean it’s later in the season where Mbemba could really come into his own. The Magpies play six of last year’s top eight (SOT, swa, mun, ARS, CHE, mci) over the first eight, with the fixture list smiling far kinder from Gameweek 9 onwards (NOR, sun, STO, bou, LEI).

It may take a little time for Mbemba to settle into English football both on and off the pitch, with high profile centre-backs such as Nemanja Vidic and Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala having struggled during the start of their careers in England. The statistics certainly point to the former Anderlecht defender being able to command a place in the starting XI, and with his proven goal threat, Mbemba could emerge as a viable Fantasy asset as the season develops.

I was all set on Sun/ Leic/ Bour for a 3 way rotation (play 1) of 4.5 defenders.

I'm too spooked about Sunderland uncertainty. Please give me another 3 way of 4.5ers. I'm too lazy to do the research.

            He started today for Sunderland

I think Kaboul should be safe

O'Shea did himself no favours today

Yep. Here's some of my Coates research:

"Coates joined Sunderland on loan for the season in September last year under then head coach Gus Poyet, but initially struggled to make his mark at the Stadium of Light.

However, he played every minute of the club's final six games of the season, in the process taking his tally to 13 appearances, as the Black Cats dragged themselves out of relegation trouble and did enough to persuade Advocaat he had a future in the north-east."

              http://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/article/3538/9900510/liverpool-defender-sebastian-coates-has-completed-a-permanent-switch-to-sunderland
"The likelihood is that Coates will be given one [centre-back place], leaving Brown, O’Shea and Kaboul to battle over who plays alongside him."

              http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/sunderland-afc-pre-season-five-9729112

I think he's the safest pick.

    No Hazard Team:
    kick off GW1 3-4-3

    Schemeicel // [Butland]

    Azpilicueta // Mertesaker // Huth // [Targett // Richards]

    Schneiderlin // Fabregas // Walcott // Sterling // [Clasie]

    Giroud // Lukaku // Costa

    0.5Million in bank.
    Lukaku - Benteke for GW2.
Giroud - replace if Walcott plays as lone striker - think everyone might be reading to much into the final game of last season, will see how they line up tomorrow in the community shield, arsenal have a favourable set of opening fixtures so want to catch as many points from them as possible!

    thoughts?

    Hazard Team
    Kick off 3-5-2

    Cech // [4.0]
    Wisdom // 5.0 // Morgan // 5.0 // 4.0
    Milner // Sanchez // Hazard // Sterling // Wanyama
    Rooney // Benteke // [Deeny]

I know there is doubt over Sanchez but if he misses the game 2mw can't see him not starting next week. I would want the likely top 2 overall scoring players in FPL , so would drop sanchez out and bring in aguero in GW3. (hazard and aguero being the most likely top 2)

I normally play a wildcard quite early on, to get a settled team after likely starting lineups are more certain and any early bandwagons can be riden before price rises (& no will power to wait!) so focus on the first few gameweeks.

what would you change on each team?
    which team would you chose?

I might shift Nathan Baker out, because I think he's a benchwarmer that will decrease in value. I can't see him getting anywhere near Villa's first XI this season and with a 15%+ ownership rate, his price is only going one way. Seeing as it's just a 4.0m bench-warmer, you might as well take a punt on someone that could find themselves getting first team football, with low ownership. Their price will only go up. If that slot is nothing more than a bench-warmer, might as well get some involvement/interest out of it.

I also have reservations about Schneiderlin's FFL puts. returns in that Utd. team and whether Kane my suffer a bit of second seasonitis. He'll be much more of a marked man this season and second time around defences might just have him sussed.

      Best of luck

I'd be wary of Mertesacker. I'm not too keen on his CS potential to be honest. I fancy a Southampton defender (Fonte) over him. Or Kolarov, if you're feeling punty. Not much in it though.

Coates to play? Not sure what the first choice Sunderland defence is but I imagine O'Shea is nailed, as he's the captain.

The rest looks very good to me. So long as the 4.5 isn't Wanyama, you won't be losing £ on the 5th mid. Aguero plan?

        8/10

Actually, looking above, there's doubt about O'Shea but I appreciate your point. It's definitely something I'm keeping an eye on. I may pull out on SUN all together.

Thanks for the feedback! And no, Wanyama isn't the 4.5 😀

Aguero plan is probably Rooney out or a WC. Not the best but it's all I can do if Costa isn't fit.

As I've said to Lucy above, you could punt on Kolarov over Mert. Saylor is trouble, non playing 4m defenders is never good. I'd go for a 4.5 defender instead, you could always downgrade if a 4m defender pops up.

3-5-2 or 3-4-3? Either way, you're going to have selection problems if Puncheon/Graham don't rotate. (I'm not sure if they do).

Walcott is a very good pick. Same with Ozil.

Whats your option about Sinclair as 4th mid option?

Remember the time when he played for Swans and was great fpl option.

      Maybe something like this

      Haz-Walcott-Sterling-Sinclair

      Rooney-Kane-Pelle

I think it's a huge punt personally but Tim Sherwood gets the best out of his attackers. You could always switch to Mahrez/Ki if things don't go right. I'm not keen on it, but I wouldn't advise against it either.

Not a fan of Mert, Bassong and Ward. I'd get Fonte/Cedric/Kolarov, Francis, Huth.

Puncheon as a 4th mid is a bit light, though your funds don't allow you more. Ritchie/Young could be better picks.

Like the Giroud pick, he's under the radar on here. Lukaku is a troll.

Scrap the 3-4-3 team, it needs too much work.

        The 3-5-2 looks better.

But instead of the 5m and 4m, go for 4.5m x2. So it's Wisdom 5m Morgan 4.5m 4.5m. Also Huth is a better pick than Morgan.

Rest looks good. Walcott over Sanchez until he's back. Don't wildcard early. There's 19 gameweeks to use the first one.

If you think Monreal is nailed. then it's a good pick. He should rack up BAPS. Gomez might be a very short term option and there;s questions over Coates' game time.

Guess from preseason, he's played far more than Moreno.

Is it crazy to triple up on Southampton? Currently have Pelle, Mane and Cedric

Triggerlips gave two thumbs up for Sinclair. Not sure if serious or just trolling.

    Do you prefer

    A. Benteke, Mane, 5.5 def (Mert, Shaw, Kolarov)

    or

    B. Pelle, Milner, Ivanovic

So yaya had a bad season, least it seemed he wasn't at his best, but still scored 10 goals, maybe he can be back at his best this season?

Think he may play first week, but is then competing for a spot in the front 3 with Benteke, Ings, Origi, Lallana, Coutinho, Firmino.

With Benteke and Firmino expected when fit to be first choice, he'll struggle I reckon.
