Scout Scribbles – FA Reject Courtois Appeal

The FA dismiss Chelsea’s appeal over Thibaut Courtois’ weekend red card. Kevin Mirallas remains a doubt for Everton, Jack Grealish is set to miss out for Villa again, whilst Newcastle due Remy Cabella and Paul Dummett return to training.

Courtois Appeal Fails

Chelsea are set to be without their first-choice keeper, Thibaut Courtois, for the weekend trip to City, after unsuccessfully appealing the keeper’s weekend dismissal against Swansea.

The Scout Says: There’s no real surprise with the FA’s decision, which should afford Asmir Begovic his first league start for the champions on Sunday afternoon. Chelsea’s unusually porous display against the Swans may persuade owners of their defenders to move them to the bench for the Etihad showdown. Granted, Jose Mourinho’s men have a knack of shutting up shop on these occasions but they seemed decidedly sluggish at the back last weekend and with City looking slick against West Brom on Monday evening, the chances of a clean sheet for the champions, is, for once, debatable.

Mixed News for Toffees

Roberto Martinez expects Gerard Deulofeu and Muhamed Besic to return to the matchday squad this weekend, while Kevin Mirallas is touch-and-go for the Southampton clash after sustaining an ankle injury against Watford:

“Gerard Deulofeu and Mo Besic are very close and it’s about getting them back to their best possible level. Physically we need giving them that introduction but they are close to making the squad for the weekend. Over the [last] weekend we picked up a worrying knock on Kevin Mirallas. He’s got a bit of a swollen ankle but I’m quite positive in Kevin being fit, even though as it stands now we are going to check and assess him for the weekend. It was a very dangerous challenge and if you review the action, he was very fortunate to escape with no major injury.”

The Scout Says: While the return of Deulofeu and Besic affords Martinez more options off the bench, Mirallas’ injury status is of more interest to Fantasy managers. The Belgian winger – whom we tipped as a Differential last Gameweek – excited us with his goal frequency last term (one every 213.7 minutes), given that Alexis Sanchez (192.4) and Sadio Mane (204.3) were the only regular midfield starters to post superior figures. In saying that, Everton’s dire schedule – which pits them against all of last year’s top eight in the next nine Gameweeks – should ensure most steer clear for now.

Midfield Woe for Villa

Jack Grealish and Carles Gil are recovering well from their respective injuries, but Tim Sherwood is unlikely to risk the pair when Villa play host to Manchester United on Friday:

“Jack and Carles are still out injured. Once we get everyone fit and fighting for places, it gives us a lot of options to play different ways, which will be crucial. Jack and Carles are training. They have had a few training sessions. But we don’t want to push them back too early because they’ve had soft tissue injuries. We don’t want them to reoccur.”

The Scout Says: Despite emerging from the opening Gameweek with a victory under their belt, Villa managed just seven attempts on goal at Bournemouth last weekend. The return of Grealish, in particular, should help the Villains improve in that regard, and place question marks over Scott Sinclair’s role on the left. Sherwood set his side up in a 4-3-3 last weekend and, with big-money signing Jordan Ayew handed the right flank role; it remains to be seen whether Sinclair can remain at the top of the pecking order for long – all the more so given that the Villa boss has also been heavily linked with a move for Barcelona wide man Adama Traore. With some decent fixtures to follow the United match (cry, SUN, lei, WBA), those looking for a budget option could consider Ashley Westwood (4.5), who provided the assist for Rudy Gestede’s weekend winner.

Clasie remains doubtful for Saints

Jordy Clasie ramped up his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury with a run-out for the Southampton U21s on Monday but was forced off with a fresh knock just after the break.

The Scout Says: With Clasie looking uncertain to feature at home to Everton, Steven Davis looks likely to earn another start alongside Victor Wanyama in the double pivot. Although he’s better known for his metronomic passing than his defensive capabilities, no midfielder tallied more interceptions than Davis (five) in Gameweek 1, suggesting he’s an able stand-in for Clasie. That’s positive news for those managers who sourced Saints defensive coverage in light of the south coast club racking up 11 home clean sheets last term. With showdowns against just three of last year’s top seven in the next 12 Gameweeks, the Saints defence remains a likely source of defensive points, despite conceding twice at Newcastle last Sunday.

Cabella and Dummett step up fitness

Steve McClaren revealed that Paul Dummett and Remy Cabella are set to return to full training this week, though Emmanuele Riviere could be forced to undergo surgery on an ongoing knee problem.

The Scout Says: Considering that Riviere mustered just one goal and assist across 23 outings in the previous campaign, it’s safe to suggest that his absence wouldn’t be felt on the Fantasy scene. Cabella (6.5) carded a similarly underwhelming attacking output last term (one goal and two assists), yet his underlying statistics hint towards latent potential: only Moussa Sissoko (44) engineered more shooting opportunities (43) among the Toon midfield, while his key pass frequency (one every 55.4 minutes) bested the likes of Jack Colback (74.9) and Sissoko (74). Given that McClaren fielded Gabriel Obertan on the left last weekend, Cabella will be hoping to force his way into the Magpies’ plans after last year’s disappointment. Dummett’s imminent return should see him vie with Massadio Haidara for the left-back berth, though the latter, like Obertan, strengthened his claim for a regular role by supplying an assist against the Saints last weekend.

    Ive asked this so many times. The general consensus in the british media twittersphere is that De Gea is staying. Does anyone think he will still end up at Real?

      I can't say I have any more than just hypothetical insight, but the whole situation seems strange to me. If he doesn't leave this window, I'd not be surprised at all if he left in a year's time.

      Yes. May be all part of the negotiations. Taking a hardline hoping for most bang for their buck. But Real want him and will get him imo.

      What Inthink doesn't matter but as a Utd fan I'm torn, do we want a player that clearly has his head in a different place. Would it not be better to cash in.
      He is a great keeper no doubt but I'm a bit miffed that he now after being developed to a world class keeper wants to leave.

      Guess we'll see if he's actually "professional' and can do the job.
      I'm glad United seem to be playing hard ball, I'd rather him leave for free than give in and roll over to Real.
      And then if his head isn't in the game, he can play for the U21's.

      Can see it all coming together in the 11th hour though.

    I had first intended not to make a transfer. The reasoning being that I had picked my initial team for a reason, and a dud GW shouldn't sour the logic of such reasoning. I am, however, tempted by the following:

    Ruddy || Butland
    Azpi || Mert || Huth || Francis || Coates
    Haz || Wally || Ozil || Mane || Fletcher
    Roo || Benteke || Wilson

    Going against the advice I myself had delivered throughout preseason, I decided to go with Wilson. My mistake. The question must now be posed:

    A) Save
    B) Haz -> Payet, Wilson -> Gomis (-4)

    I can see a GW4 WC as likely, given that I'll want at least 2 city (incl. Kun) by that point, and will be unlikely to get there without hits. More poor planning - I hadn't considered that I would want more than the single City asset.

    Would be very interested in your thoughts.

        Perhaps not for a hit, but it was actually something I had considered doing. I really only felt like I needed him for that first game, where he would have a high % captaining him. So you're against it I take it?

          I dont have Hazard. I started with Cesc to gain a greater balance on the team. cesc has subsequently gone for Payet already this week and im comfortably stirring my tea at the desk watching the sagas unfold in the FFS forums.

          honestly though: Your only two options for a downgrade for me are Walcott or Ozil. Starting with two Arsenal mids aint clever anyway, no matter how many do it.

          You want one of Payet, Ayew, Coutinho or Mane

            Thanks - interesting indeed. I already have Mane, and Coutinho doesn't interest me in the slightest if I'm honest, he won't be scoring 35 yard wonderstrikes every week, and by all accounts he was poor up to that point.

            I do agree though that Payet and Ayew are definitely interesting. Wally will probably only be given 1 more week (if he's ever likely to start, this week, given their last performance, seems the most probable). He will probably be shifted for a City asset. Which leaves me the dilemma - if I want Kun GW4, the money from B (above) would be the easiest facilitator of that, and rid me of having to play Wilson every week.

            Am I right or am I rambling? 😛

      A - stick to your gun

      I think getting 3 MCI for GW4 for a hit is not a big problem and decent strategy. I believe the hit will be rewarded handsomely in 3-5 GWs.

        Worth noting, B gives me a very convenient 2.5mil itb, which could then easily be used to address the Kun problem.

      I think you are in a world of pain with that squad. The early wildcard will be a relief.

      I think you probably have to keep Wilson because you can't replace him without a hit. And if you take a hit this week to replace Wilson you will need another one next week probably too.

      If I were you I'd first decide when I want Aguero. If you want him in GW3 then it will have to be Hazard to 7.0 and Benteke to Aguero. Unless you want to lose Rooney at home to Newcastle.

      So, Hazard to Ayew or Lens maybe and Benteke to Aguero. Next question is do you make the Hazard switch now or wait a week? Hazard has City (a), not great and it is typically a low-scoring game. Swansea and Sunderland both have juicy home fixtures. So I think I'd take Ayew or Lens for Hazard now and be ready for Benteke to Aguero next week.

      That still leaves you with a big problem with Walcott but he could become Yaya in GW4 or in GW3 for a hit if he doesn't start this week. Something like that I guess.

        I would agree with this plan
        particularly if you are thinking of WC early, it seems wrong to risk a hit for a couple of games

        Thanks Ruth, appreciate the analysis.

        I think you're certainly correct in that the timing of the Kun transfer is key. If it were to be GW4, instead of 3, then I suppose that the Hazard transfer would still best be completed this week, and Walcott could be jettisoned for the city asset of choice (Silva perhaps, but any of them) in GW3. That would allow a simple upgrade of Rooney -> Kun in time for GW4, no hits required.

        Once again, I appreciate the insight. Certainly put myself in a tricky spot.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years

          Yes, Aguero GW4 is my plan too. He doesn't have a good goals record against Everton.

          In that case your plan is very good. And Wilson has good fixtures from GW4-8 so holding him wouldn't be the end of the world.

          It changes the numbers though because you don't need to release so much value from Hazard if you are going that way. You could also look at Hazard to Payet. That would still leave enough for Walcott to Silva next week and Rooney to Aguero the week after. Plus leave 1.5 in the bank for a later upgrade of Wilson.

          That would solve all the main problems I think, without a hit and also without requiring a wildcard. You might be able to save that till later. I planned an early wildcard myself but looking deeper at the season, the fixtures seem to take a turn around GW13 and I am now thinking I might try to hold it until then.

          In any case, I think I'd make the one FT this week of Hazard to Payet, Ayew or Lens in your position. I don't have Hazard so it's not something I need to look at myself.

            Cheers - the more I think about it, the more I think that this may be the right way to go.

            As for the WC, I must admit I hadn't noticed the GW13 shift. It appears as though Arsenal, Everton, Chelse and United in particular have quite a good run in the following weeks. Certainly a good shout.

            Thanks for your assistance, appreciate it.

    Some more competition for Yoshida/Caulker:

    From Skysports -

    SAINTS ON BRINK OF VAN DIJK DEAL

    Southampton are hopeful of landing Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk even if Ronny Deila’s side reach the Champions League Group stage, writes the Daily Record.

    The report suggests Ronald Koeman is on the brink of securing a £10m deal for the defender and he hopes the deal will be completed before the Seprember 1.

    Are we thinking Saints/ Newcastle result this week was just a blip?

    Or reason enough to reconsider Saints defence? And what about Cisse?

    I didn't see the game but was surprised by the result

      Didn't see the game but Saints have always kept plenty home clean sheets and few away, so no worries for me.

      I saw the game, and I can confirm:

      1) Saints defence looked out of sorts
      2) Cisse was classic Cisse, doing well (scoring his goal) when he literally doesn't have to think (it was 1m out and he scored with his chest)

        Hmm. Well I'll leave Cisse alone then and just keep an eye on Southampton over the next couple of weeks. I'm just hoping that what was prophesised last season with Lambert and Lallana going to Liverpool isn't going to come true this season with Clyne following them...

      Reconsider in my book. Cedric looked a right clumsy liability and don't let the assist fool you. Had a right hair-drying at half time by all accounts and what with young Target on the other flank I think avoid 'ttll they get back full strength.

    So those - like me - who are contemplating a GW4 WC

    Other than really wanting to get 3 City players in, there really are not any standout performers on the ticker. Arsenal and Utd have some ropey fixtures, Liverpool too

    West Brom have a nice run, so perhaps Rondon is worth keeping en eye on
    Watford have 4 decet games on the trot so helloe Deeney
    Stoke have decent fix's, Spurs and S'ton have decent enough fix's

    'S'all a bit meh, no? So is GW 4 really a good time to spunk the WC wad?
