The Dugout Discussion – Southampton vs Everton

Saturday’s events get underway with a clash between Southampton and Everton at St Mary’s this lunchtime. Both sides are looking for a first win of the new campaign after registering 2-2 draws with Newcastle and Watford last weekend.

The Saints proved a reliable source of defensive returns at home last year, chalking up 11 clean sheets in front of their own fans and conceding a mere 13 times – only Chelsea (nine) proved more miserly.

After netting twice at St James’ Park last week, they’ll be looking to take advantage of a Toffees backline devoid of the injured Leighton Baines. Certainly, given that the visitors managed just two clean sheets on their travels last season, those backing the Saints at both ends of the pitch will fancy their chances of getting amongst the points.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Looks like the exodus of players may be catching Southampton finally.

I did say last season I was unsure of some of Koeman's purchases...

Yeah, mate because Tadic, Long, Pelle and Mane have been such awful signings. Go away out of that.

        8 years, 10 months ago

Well, that's actually part of my point.

Mane was good in patches, and a decent player. Bertrand a good one. Pelle had a great start and died off massively, is only okay at best. Long a decent bench player, but again nothing wonderful at all. As for Tadic, still don't think he's great by any means.

He's had a mixed bag, some are good, some are bad. But there's some deluded opinion on here, probably because everyone likes Southampton, that they can do no wrong.

Paul mentioned to me that Mane scored at a faster rate in home matches than any other midfielder last term. He should have scored at Newcastle and he could have scored already today. Pelle has three goals in three competitive matches so he had form going into this.

I concede the Southampton defence looks very shaky without Toby but that's was a "suck it and see" situation, we have that in mind now but, for me, both Pelle and Mane went into this game with form and as strong prospects. I think that will continue to be the case, particularly with Mane - I'd still expect 10+ goals from him.

Mane is a decent one, I'm not worried about him from an FPL stand point at all and I agree that you will see him get goals.

My issue is more that Koeman has received next to no criticism for some of his purchases, and I simply don't think they're all that. Pelle is fine, but I think it was something like a 6 game blank without a goal and a 14 game blank without a goal last season for him? Tadic, I guess it depends on what you expected, but I would say he hasn't lived up to the name that surrounded him. Long is okay, will score a couple of goals here and there, and an alright worker, so suited to a sub role imo, but again nothing terrific.

As for the defence, yes it is very poor, as expected with the departures. I like Clasie, a good purchase, but some questions over those he brought into the backline. Early days yet, will not judge.

They have been very shrewd purchases. And the performances, goals and return of European football has backed this up. They look tired today as most clubs do when they start a season after juggling preseason and european football.

Although this Summer, with the cash they surely have, they should have attempted a couple of major coups.

          1. Somalion
            • 14 Years
            8 years, 10 months ago

They've played very nicely under him, I agree. But what I'm getting at is specifically his purchases. The CM was already established, as were the likes of Fonte and Clyne (both very important for them imo). I am certainly not saying he didn't do well with some buys, far from that. But a player like Pelle, who leads the line all season, and can blank in 29 league matches, is a bit crap imo. I accept they got some players cheap, Tadic, Mane etc. were decent in the sense they spent little, and some like Mane have done well for that price.

And I agree with you, they earned some big money, and aside from Clasie, I've not thought the signings too good.

Yep, there is no form guide yet, we're going to get this - like I said in the Preamble, we're desperate for sure-bets but there are very few. Southampton clearly aren't and, to be fair, nor are Everton.

Same here, and with Cedric. It's tough - it was very difficult to see Everton turn up and dominate but that's what happened.

Still, are folk really bailing on Southampton when there's 45 minutes and Watford and Norwich up next?
