Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Sunday

Sergio Aguero returns to the scoresheet and the Fantasy Football radar, prompting many to hit the transfer trail as City’s early season form continued in style with a 3-0 win over champions Chelsea. Meanwhile, in the Arsenal camp, Alexis Sanchez compounded the need for squad surgery with a performance at Selhurst Park that reminded us of his own Fantasy appeal. Here’s the notes from Sunday’s encounters…

Aguero Paves The Way For City Victory

Sergio Aguero announced his return to the starting lineup with a goal as Manuel Pellegrini’s side recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over Chelsea.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner carved out a wealth of shooting opportunities at the Etihad, with no striker mustering more attempts (seven) than Aguero this Gameweek. Non-owners will doubtless now be clamouring to recruit the 13.0-priced marksman ahead of City’s excellent run of fixtures (eve, WAT, cry, WHU, tot, NEW, BOU) – particularly when the league’s other top-end forwards (Wayne Rooney and Diego Costa) have yet to find their groove.

Indeed, Aguero’s performance provided the catalyst for a frenzy of transfer activity which has seen him claim over 100,000 new owners in the Gameweek to this point. This is likely to lead to the Argentine’s first rise in price in the next 24-hours.

David Silva carded a brace of assists to compliment his assist against West Bromwich Albion – earning two bonus points in the process – while Yaya Toure combined well with Aguero to set him up for City’s opener. Both players currently sit around the 10% ownership mark, with Raheem Sterling (19% ownership) still the more favoured route into City’s attack. Sterling’s ownership is, however, in decline having sustained almost 50,000 sales in the Gameweek so far as a result of Silva and Toure’s recent returns.

Having failed to register a single goal last term, Vincent Kompany powered home his second header in as many outings, boosting his points tally to 25 for the season. In light of Chelsea’s faltering rearguard and the absence of Leighton Baines, the talismanic captain is emerging as a prime pick among the premium defenders. Kompany has claimed almost 80,000 new owners as price teeters on the brink of another FPL price rise to 6.2.

On that note, Aleksandar Kolarov (5.5) is becoming more difficult to ignore as an alternative. The Serbian’s rampaging runs look certain to harvest attacking returns given his propensity to join the attack and his service from a dead-ball. Gael Clichy’s return to the bench might deter potential investors due to the threat of rotation, with Pellegrini’s teamsheet at Everton of keen interest.

Blues Exposed As Hazard Falters

Eden Hazard blanked for the second Gameweek running as the Blues’ defence was picked apart by Manuel Pellegrini’s troops. Only Sunderland (26) have conceded more shots inside the box than Chelsea over the opening two Gameweeks, prompting Branislav Ivanovic’s 30.4% ownership to weigh up their options.

Hazard missed a golden opportunity to equalise with what was only his second attempt at goal across the opening two fixtures. In the wake of Alexis Sanchez’ starring display against Crystal Palace, some Hazard owners might be contemplating a straight swap for the explosive winger. The fact that Chelsea face off against West Brom and Palace in the next two Gameweeks bolsters the appeal of holding tight. However, Hazard has already been sold more than any other midfielder in the Gameweek to this point and is second only to Wayne Rooney in overall sales.

John Terry – who played every single minute of the previous campaign – was replaced by Kurt Zouma at half time, having struggled to contend with the pace and movement of City’s elusive forward line. Although that tactical decision is unlikely to portend a severe reduction in playing time, this new threat of rotation is certainly worth factoring in.

Sanchez Return Inspires Gunners Win

Olivier Giroud bounced back from a listless performance in Arsenal’s season-opener to open his account with a sublime first-time finish as Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners at Selhurst Park.

The France international was again favoured over Theo Walcott in the lone striker role, much to the dismay of the latter’s 6.8% ownership – who will now certainly be engineering exit plans – over 50,000 have sold Walcott on in the Gameweek with his price already dropping to 8.9.

Alexis Sanchez marked his first start of the campaign with an assist, after his header was diverted into the Eagles’ net by Damien Delaney. The Chilean livewire was a constant menace to the home defeat and, based on his display, is surely likely to cement “untouchable” status on the Arsenal teamsheet. Sanchez is still owned by under 10% of FPL managers to this point, despite heavy investment overnight.

Mesut Ozil edged ahead of Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla in the contest between Arsenal’s 8.5-priced midfielders, chalking up an assist and two bonus points for a seven-point haul. The German playmaker is arguably the least prone to rotation among the trio but has registered the fewest attempts at goal (three) in these early stages.

Hector Bellerin reclaimed a starting berth on his return from the treatment room. With match-ups against Newcastle United and Stoke City in the next three Gameweeks (LIV, new, STO), the Gunners should stand a decent chance of securing their first clean sheet of the season.

  3. Early wildcard justifications

Reasons why i felt my panic wildcard last night was justified:

    - Double Sunderland defence, who look a complete shambles. Can't wait for them to get their act together with their price depreciating and possibly being dropped from the team.

    - Aguero and Rooney's prices were going in completely opposite directions. Don't want the latter's to get out of hand too quickly, he could well be 13.2 before i get him if i didn't wildcard. Rooney had a good fixture but he didn't have the form, and it seemed a bit like blind faith to think he'll come good and would match Aguero this week, based on his showings so far.

    - Poor keepers, Hennessy who was overlooked for McCarthy, and Ruddy who's failed in his first 2 matches, is falling and has tricky fixtures now

    - Hazard and Mane = two expensive mids weighing the team down, and possibly dropping in value by the end of the week. I think both were great picks, are great picks and can be again so am not ruling out them staying in my new team, but if i can get them at .1 less then that can only be good.
    - Sinclair and Cedric both turning out to be very poor picks, the former could find himself out of the team, the latter is a card magnet, and in hinsight, could've been bought in, when the likes of Clasie and Bertrand returned to the side and were fully up and running.

    - I can now get in 3 City for their excellent run of fixtures, and don't have the headache of how to fit them in taking a -8, or even within 2 gameweeks.

    - Gain some team value now, as i'd want to give myself the best chance to get in sanchez, aguero + hazard with the rest of the squad also being in okay shape, in a period where price changes appear the most volatile, they will settle down after a few weeks, and players will be easier to bring in and out, with a hit here and there, without feeling like you are scurrying to get them in due to the price changes.

Does this seem logical? What were some of your reasons, and what reservations do you have about the next 5-6 gameweeks with your wildcard now gone? (transfer window still open being the main one for me)

I'm currently on a -4. Managed to bring in Kun and Silva but really unhappy about Sterling and would like to bring in Sanchez.

My defence also is in shambles with 0 clean sheets between them in 2 weeks.

My ML opponents have jumped ahead and a WC could stop my slide.

But is it too soon to activate it?

I think you could possibly ride it out for next week, as you've got 2 city attackers and sanchez is playing pool.

I wouldn't delay it for too long, but it seems you maybe don't need it urgently. If your defence still has good fixtures, and you have a little bit of faith in them, it could be worth giving them 1 or 2 more weeks, and seeing how it goes, then wildcarding over the next 2 if you still aren't getting anywhere

I'm not even sure Sanchez is a better option than Hazard yet, given the 8.5 Arsenal mids could still show their worth and Chelsea could get their act together in the next couple weeks. But with the wildcard, i would try and be flexible so i could fit either in with a -4 or 3 transfers.

^this! My theory is, Arsenal mids will share points, while hazard is the drive behind chelsea's sucess last season. Dont be surprised if he scores a goal or two and get Max baps while Sanchez blanks this GW.

      Seems very logical.
I pressed it last night, currently 2.6m OR - didn't dislike my team, but no gambles paid off..... at all, and of course value was dropping.

Kane/Sakho/Walcott (never again)/ Not a single CS, and only Chadli my saving grace so far.

Last season I had no injuries, all starting players got points and i had a great start - this is the polar opposite (barring injuries).

City I think look on fire, so having 3 in is a must, I'm keeping a reservation fund to change Silva to Hazard should he start firing, and will be playing (C) very carefully now rather than punting on a 4pt Mane punt.

It's all a learning curve, but It has been a tough 2 GWs.

the transfer window for me is never a worry, there aren't too many decent buys at end of window and even if there is you would usually only want one or two of them. Given that they can take a few weeks to settle or even start it is plenty of time to work them into squad if you want to

Yep you're probably right. It seems like the majority of sides have already done a heck of a lot of business, and we're still to see where those new signings fit in, let alone the ones to come. Don't expect any really big transfers that would be game changers.

I haven't used my WC but I think considering one has to be used by the 28th December (I think) then it's arguably a good time to use it, especially with the volatile price rises.

I'm in a similar situation and at this moment I'm taking a -4 or maybe a -8 to sort my team out. I'm telling myself that because nobody has absolutely killed it in the past few weeks, that a -4 or a -8 won't have too much of an impact in my position in the league. But the thing that's worrying me almost is that I don't know why I'm holding off on the WC so much......I think it's more the fact that we've only witnessed 180minutes of football to base our decisions off

If you've gone with safe picks then I can't see the transfer window having too much of an impact on your team, unless an insane transfer came off.

      1. Demí

Yes i had very similar thoughts before pressing the button. I thought even if i took a -8. i'd probably end up wildcarding for gw 4 or gw 5 anyway. so it maybe made sense to do it earlier and be in a better position in terms of price changes. fair point on the transfer window, can only think the other downside is not having more of a sample size as you say, but you can still get around that with carefully planned hits after your wc i think

With the WC system the way it is this season there's nothing wrong with having already played your WC.

I think I'm going to be struggling for a good time to use it tbh, if I used it now I think I'd only change 5 players and some of those would just be subs. I've already got Alexis and Sanchez in my side and I'll be doing Ramsey to Yaya/Sterling this week.

Think you're absolutely spot on Demi.

Mightnot be too many that go up .2 but switching out the falling failures for the risers could make a major difference to TV by the end of the week.

Add that to the number of players and teams that are not performing to expectation and I think a WC now, although not in 'the plan' is definitely the way to go.

The fact I'm currently on 13 points with 2 to play may also have been a factor mind you.

Your team is similar to mine yet I'm keeping the WC for these reasons

      - Only PVA from SUN defense; might be a bad pick after all with the form SUN in atm but I still think he has that attacking threat and easy to downgrade.

      - I did Roo to Kun for a hit - will be justified when I re-gain the lost points in no time.

-Haz & Mane - I think they will bounce back this week.

-Sinclair is stinking my team - but nonetheless worth staying until he's truly out of the team.

-I already have Kun and I think another hit to bring a YYT/Silva will be justified again next week.

The thing holding me off the WC mainly is that there is no guarantee in a few weeks that if I bring in a lot of the bandwagons, I may want to WC again if they aren't performing! It's been two games.

It's only been 180minutes of football

For example, after the first week West Ham played so well against Arsenal that it looked like their defence was essential. Then against Leicester they looked completely different!

Forgot about the 'keeper. I got Ruddy Rudd combo and I think I was unlucky not to get a CS last game. Not the best pair for the game but I think worth holdong onto given their next 6 or 7 games.

      4. Demí
        • 13 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

So really, it's not similar at all 🙂

I had double sunderland defence and no kun. I agree that haz and mane will bounce back, though neither of us know whether it will be this week. still in my thoughts and i could get them back cheaper near the deadline.

i'm anticipating sinclair will be dropped, either this or next week, rather than waiting for it to happen and then doing something about it.

"I did Roo to Kun for a hit - will be justified when I re-gain the lost points in no time." Will it though? Aguero gets so many chances a game, Rooney can't be trusted with the captaincy and looks like he's forgotton how to play as a striker. could wrok out this week, could justify the points lost in no time, but in the long term, aguero will outscore him by more than their price difference is my belief. who knows though, good luck anyway

I've been playing since 2003/4 and this is the earliest I've used my Wild Card and I agree with all of your points as to why it needed to be hit (for me at least) this week.

I feel my team has a better balance now (my keepers and defense were a mess after trying a rotation approach) and I'm going to catch price rises that will hopefully make bringing Hazard back in when he hits form.

I'll try to save an FT before the transfer window closes and play a mini Wild Card if needed. Hopefully Austin gets a decent move and I will be able to bring him in for Gomis.

Pressed the panic button as well. Too many cheaper alternatives delivering (Ayew, mahrez, Payet etc), defence not perforning (Sunderland, Southampton, Chelsea).
My only regret is still don't know who will get signed in transfer window - uncertainty over West Brom, ManU and ManC defence in particular is a pain.

Those 3 defences are a big reason for me, but it's odd as they were all good last season, so it's probably worth getting them out until they find their form again, instead of keeping and letting them drop in price( it's not like they will be out of reach in terms of price anytime soon) so they don't have to be ignored forever.

I think Man U defence, you can't go wrong with Darmian. 5.6 is still a very good price, and we look more solid with Schneiderlin now. Case for not getting would be the fact we've not had a proper test yet

I've wildcarded as well for the following reasons:

      - 2 x Southampton defenders may be bit much
      - Koscielny not looking anywhere near as good an option as Kompany but same price more or less
      - Question marks over Sadio Mane
      - Theo Walcott possibly the worst pick in the game
      - Not convinced by Ozil
      - Kane potential injury/resting/lack of form

Struggling to fit Haz, Sanchez, Silva & Aguero in my team for obvious reasons.

Which one would you leave out? Aguero not an option.

With Hazard .5 more and falling, while Sanchez's stock is rising probably the former but am no way set with my thoughts on those. I think Arsenal look good for goals right now, and will bring in the points for fpl teams, whereas hazard and chelsea still need a bit of time to get their act together. so i'd leave out hazard as it stands

          Interesting!

My other concern is being too bandwogany (if that's even a word), for example do you get Mahrez or has he had his spell...great fixtures and seriously good value at the moment.

What's your current wildcard team looking like?

I have no idea at the moment, just playing the risers until i find out how much money i have to spend on my new squad. But the spine will be Aguero, Mane, 4-5-5.4 gk and a non-playing one, Kolarov and 4 4.5-5m nailed defenders. Either both hazard, sanchez and a 4.5-5m mid, or 1 of hazard/sanchez and 2 7-8.5m mids. Rough plan, not really sure yet.

I don't think Mahrez is bandwagoney at all. His stats are excellent, playing for a leicester side who we all got wrong in pre-season, thinking they'd be fighting relegation. He's also on pens currently which we didn't know before. Still has good fixtures, so worth a punt i think

I had Mane and thought he was decent against Newcastle but awful on Saturday so not currently in my team.

Do you think Kolarov is nailed ahead of Clichy? Surely Kompany is worth the extra 0.6 for guarantee starts.

I'm ranked about 1.9m, but would rather take a -16pt hit right now and keep my wildcard for one of the upcoming international breaks.

As already mentioned, the disappointment of teams(mainly defences) like Chelsea, Southampton, Suderland and Arsenal, combined with the early form of United defenc, Swansea, Leicester and Prem newcomers has forced a lot of people's hand.

Situations like this are what FPL is all about though, no?

Indeed they are. I don't think im actually changing the majority of my squad, as i still think a few of them are good picks. But the fact that i can get rid and buy back cheaper at the end of the week if i still feel they'll come good is another contributing factor

Pulled the trigger just now... Coates, Ritchie, Sinclair were dropping fast whilst City players, whom I had none, along with Mahrez, were rising rapidly. I felt I could've ended in a -0.6 price difference situation by the end of the week.

Having said that, I still expect Mane and Hazard to perform away from home next GW and possibly outscore Silva, Yaya and Sanchez.

It'd be funny if Rooney outscored Aguero, which CAN happen. I think this early wildcard rule screwed things for many decent teams, because their confidence was mainly influenced by the price -/+ thing, and not by the belief in their own players' performances.

Great post Demi. I agree with everything you've said there, and most of it also applied to my team - double Sunderland, no Aguero/Sanchez, Rooney, Hazard and Mane dropping etc. Funnily enough, my current WC draft has got Hazard and Mane as well as Sanchez and Aguero - I'm hoping I can turn Hazard and Mane's price drops from a loss into a gain.

You say let's wait until we know better but then we All will know better and All get the same players in week 13 or whenever true form becomes obvious.
I think it's hunches and seeing players show glimpses of form that is important and
Get them in while hot especially if your team is a shambles.
Last year I waited and held onto players way too long for me the risk is worth it
Not sure why it has to be such an argument with the pro and against WC .. Everyone plays differently otherwise we'd all be number 1 at the end

      Basically my reasoning aswell.

Haven't rad all replies, but my team was like this:

      Schmeichel / Schwarzer
      Ivanovic / Cedric / Coates / Francis / Gomez
      Hazard / Walcott / Depay / Mane / Fletcher
      Rooney / Benteke / Deeney

Absolutely shocking. Did have 2FT but absolutely no way I'd be able to fix this miss even with that. That defence with Ivan not performing, Cedric, Coates and Francis, that midfield with 4x 8m+ players without a SINGLE goal or assist BETWEEN them with one of them not even playing and all four about to drop. Deeney is the only player I was kinda satisfied with, although Benteke could change that tonight.

If I wildcarded, it would be to fix my peripheral players. My 4th & 5th mids, 3rd striker, and my defence. Having already saved a transfer and then taken a 4pt hit for next week I'm much more happy with 4th mid, my 3rd striker delivered in GW2 when I thought he wouldn't, and although my defence is still leaking goals I've got enough cash in them to downgrade to who I want.

But I *like* making transfers, so I really want to wildcard. Sigh.

      Still Justifying that wildcard button?

I was literally justifying the wildcard to myself at 2am (BST) I saw the projected players to rise that i wanted to get and it was more than 2 then it was wildcard ...

Pros: I wanted to beat the price rises rather wait over 2-3 weeks with point hits! I was pretty annoyed with myself that I paid 5.6 (instead of 5.5) Mahrez all because I was Umming and Ahhh-ing for a day. plus like Demi earlier, it was my chance to get rid of cheap defender you want to get rid of and replace with alternatives. Never underestimate the power of having a playing bench as opposed to having non playing bench fillers! What else helped my decision was that we lose the wildcard option after Dec (gw 19?) and get a new one for January.

Con: I was asking myself GW2 wildcard, how did it all go wrong?? But this really is a season to hit the ground running! At the end of the last season, after running that excellent tool provided here which analysed your whole FPL season with transfers, subs, captain choices etc I learnt that I held on to players too long, made some bad captain choices and that I jumped on bandwagons / form players too late i.e. transferring fab > hazard

so at 2am I made my transfers with "-12" highlighted this was justifying my cause and in came, Yaya toure, Sanchez, Sanchez, Payet, Darmian, Micah Richards, Wards et all, and out went a lot of players I had zero regrets about...

Lets not be fooled there's still players yet to come in and make a difference to our plans til the real transfer window shuts (1st of Sept) i.e. Shaqiri, Kevin de bruyne or even Otamendi and many more but the template players / teams are well and truly alive!!

Logical reasons there. But think not using is better option.

I am currently at 50 points in 2 GW with Ritchie and Hendo to play. But still do not think wildcard as an option. 2 FT this week so Rooney Walcott out and Aguero and Mahrez in.

Hazard should find form. Specially after city trashing
Kane should score fixtures look good for another 4 weeks
Defense I have Ruddy/Butland Cedric Targett Francis Alderweild Morgan. No clean sheets so far but it might click any GW. Do not think knee jerk reaction would help.
Plus transfer window still open. Would want to hold until it closes to change

Agree or think I should use?

I would agree with you there i think. Not to use it right now. Agree on Kane/Hazard. The main reason for the post was to justify why i felt wildcarding was right for my squad, and people in a similar situation with a similar squad. Not to really tell anyone that wildcarding later is wrong, or that it's best to do it right now, as each individual is different.

Your squad looks fine though, i would go about sorting out the double saints defence after the aguero/mahrez transfers. If not, getting a 2nd city player in.

Sounds good to me. I don't think its a bad idea to hold and the odd hit here and there could help you keep up with the trends if need be. Defensive form will change, I remember when Burnley defence was a must in the early season WC's last season.

Yaya is not as consistent as Silva tbh. if you take away the WBA goal which was wrongly given to Yaya i dont see him to score more that Silva. only Aguero and Silva will have more touches in the opponent D box. Yaya will score occasional blinders from range, but with sterling in the team Yaya and Fernandinho will sit deep allowing Kolarov, sterling, navas to go fwd.

I am.. with Silva, Aguero and Kompany.
Played my WC before I'm dead even before the season starts.
      Too many under-performing players.

      A.
Even if Benteke performs, the coming fixtures are not favourable.
And I would still trust Pelle with the fixtures coming on.

he isn't fit. I think the chelsea team look jaded. They started pre season so late, it might just be that they are behind where they should be in fitness terms

Does that stun you? I am not, he was never a dribbler.
Mainly a provocative beast in the mood of Mou on the pitch.

Is yaya going to keep up this attacking threat? At the moment he is looking like the pre cake-gate 13/14 season quality.
