Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Monday

Liverpool climb to joint-third in the top flight after a second successive 1-0 win. Christian Benteke grabs his first goal for the Anfield outfit, whilst Jordan Henderson supplies the assist before being forced off with a foot problem. Here’s the notes from Monday’s floodlit encounter…

Benteke Fires Reds To Victory

Christian Benteke came up trumps at the second time of asking, opening his Liverpool account by virtue of a controversial goal. Although Bournemouth fans will lament the linesman’s decision not to raise the offside flag after Philippe Coutinho seemingly interfered with play, Benteke’s 40% ownership were delighted to bank the Belgian’s nine-point haul in an otherwise low-scoring Gameweek.

Benteke’s prospects are mixed over the next five Gameweeks (ars, WHU, mun, NOR, AVL), with two challenging road trips balanced out by three enticing home encounters. Nonetheless, the former Aston Villa hitman will certainly fancy his chances to score at Old Trafford, having netted in both league ties against Manchester United last term.

The Reds were far from commanding but ultimately secured their second consecutive victory and clean sheet. Naturally, Fantasy managers will be drawn towards their rearguard assets, with Joe Gomez (4.6) presenting the cheapest option of the current starters. On that note, the difficulty of Liverpool’s next trio of fixtures and the threat of rotation from Alberto Moreno diminishes the 18-year-old’s appeal slightly.

Philippe Coutinho failed to register in back-to-back matches, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying: no player in the league fashioned more attempts at goal (eight) than the Brazilian playmaker in Gameweek 2, emphasising his status as the most potent goal threat in the Reds’ midfield. Of course, Roberto Firmino – who replaced Jordon Ibe in the 70th minute – harbours the potential to steal that crown away from his compatriot when he’s afforded a starting berth.

Jordan Henderson delivered his first attacking returns of the campaign with the assist for Benteke’s close-range strike. His 20.1% ownership couldn’t cheer for long, however, after the Reds captain was replaced by Emre Can at the 52-minute mark due to a foot injury. Brendan Rodgers revealed after the match that Henderson missed training during the week because of this complaint:

“He’s had a problem with the bottom of his foot. He hadn’t trained for part of the week, he was taking some painkillers with it. He did ever so well to even be out on the field. He wanted to try it, he wanted to give it a go, but you could see he was limited in his running. He did great for us in the period of time that he was on but it’s important that we get victories and it’s important that we have fit players on the field and unfortunately for him he was just in too much pain.”

Ritchie Impresses Despite Cherries Defeat

After carding a 1-0 defeat for the second week running, Bournemouth join Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion in the relegation zone. The Cherries turned out a spirited performance but failed to test Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet with enough regularity, tallying just two shots on target throughout the 90 minutes.

Much of the Cherries’ positive play funnelled through winger Matt Ritchie (5.9), who ranked fourth for attempts at goal (five) among midfielders this Gameweek and struck the upright with one of his efforts. In light of the south coast club’s excellent upcoming run of fixtures (whm, LEI, nor, SUN, sto, WAT), the Scotsman’s 4% ownership may well be reluctant to cut their losses just yet.

Budget forward Callum Wilson was less impressive up front alongside Joshua King, mustering just one shot all night. With places in our three-man frontlines at a premium and having already dropped to 5.4 overnight, Wilson seems unlikely to survive the chop among those managers with Wildcards active.

Eddie Howe made two changes to his opening day line-up, drafting in both Eunan O’Kane and Max Gradel for their first starts, with Dan Gosling and Marc Pugh dropping to the bench. While Wilson disappointed, it was King who made way on the hour-mark as Howe looked to revive fortunes. New signing Lee Tomlin was introduced for King and he could now threaten to work his way into the starting line-up for the trip to West Ham in Gameweek 3. At the back, popular budget option, Tyrone Mings, was again benched with Charlie Daniels retaining the left-back berth.

Why keep Ritchie, or Hazard, or Cazorla and ignore Sanchez.

Why not Silva or Yaya Toure. Why Mertesacker? And when Speroni comes back you are stuck playing a Stoke gk every week until you can next wildcard gwk 20 or so.

I think if you are going to wildcard you need to do a clean sweep. I've just wildcarded and have taken out 12 players. Only Ruddy and Butland and Wes Morgan remained.

so difficult to read too much into swans games to date.

      (i) they played vs. 10 men for a large period of both games
(ii) ayew scored a header - how often is that likely given he is about 4 foot tall
(iii) felt like gomis was dropping deep a fair bit

I'm Wildcarding this week - is anyone else trying to spin a bit of money out of it? If so, are we likely to make any money in one week? I've tried to draft in players who have relatively small ownership and are near to going up in value according to http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk/, but I'm doubtful whether any will make the .2 increase needed.

I'm reposting this as I don't think people realise the importance of these changes. I've said constantly that Rooney is a poor fantasy player due to lack of service without going into detail about how United play upfront. I've been watching United for years so it's easy for me to see why Rooney isn't performing under LVG but that could all be about to change with the signing of Pedro.

If United sign Pedro he will probably play on the right wing instead of Mata who might be moved into the No10 position. These changes will affect Rooney and should make him a good fantasy prospect.

In 3/4 weeks Rooney could become a key player in fantasy foobtall something many us haven't accounted for especially those playing their wildcards this week. The signing of Pedro could make Mata an important player for us while allowing Rooney to flourish. I'm pretty sure LVG is not going to continue to allow the current lack of service to continue which is why he want's to bring in Pedro to play on the right wing so he will have to move Mata into a new central position.

    1. Get up ya bum
      • 14 Years

The problem is Rooney not the players around him. He's just not that good anymore

      Or knowing LVG......

Not do the obvious and best thing thing that could happen to Mata but either drop him entirely for Fellaini / Januzaj / Herrera or bring in a striker and put Rooney in at number 10

Fact is we just dont know. Would love it to result in him at number 10 but he hasnt played for him there yet and has had alot of oppertunity to do so.

Januzai could play RW in the Pedro role up until now for example with his pace

So in 3/4 weeks people can move a bit of money around to get him back in. After he's likely dropped in price. Anyone with a bit of sense wont move all of there money into midfield, so will be able to easily get Roonpig back with two free transfers.

Everyone's wildcarding, me included, because Aguero's price is rising, and other areas of the team are not working.

Just think all these price changes are turning my head a little bit. Hopefully Sakho, Haz, Mane and the defence get some points this weekend

On my WC after an awful start, stuck on Myhill and Bentekkers or Romero and Pelle any help?

Any thoughts on improving this defence. On WC:

    XXX / McCarthy
    Kompany / Williams / XXX / Richards / Gomez

    A) Courtois and 4.7m def
    B) Butland and Darmian

Currently on B, but Courtois does seem good value at 5.4! Any ideas?

    Settled on this:

    Myhill | McCarthy
    Kompany | Darmian | Cresswell | Ward | Oxford
    Sanchez | Silva | Mane | Mahrez | Westwood
    Aguero | Gomis | Sakho

Mane currently out of the team until he drops. Bit worried about having 3 West Ham players but there's no real 4.0 alternative to Oxford.

Very similar to mine, I like it.

      Are you sure on Myhill?

Myhill and McCarthy rotate well for the next 4-6 games. There's transfer option at 4.5 so happy with him for now.

Myhill may be a dud, on account of Marshall.

Looks good, not sure about double Ars. I would go for Payet and upgrade YYT to Silva if you have the funds.

If he nails down a start. He didn't play every game last year in the Championship. I nearly went for him too, but I'm back to a 4.5M now

What do people think about Shaqiri? Worth a punt given Stoke's awesome fixtures?

why is everyone picking up Swansea Defender williams
    Man UTD (H)
    Everton (H)
    Southampton (A)
    Spurs (H)
4 of his next 6 games are horrible
You really think he's going to pick up clean sheets?

They're tough fixtures, but more so from an attacking perspective imo. I could see Swansea getting CS in any of those four. I could also see them failing to score 😛
