Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 3 – The Weak

After assessing the teams with the strongest upcoming schedule yesterday, we now shift our focus to assess those sides we should be trying to avoid for the next six Gameweeks.

This should be a particular interest to those Fantasy managers keen to make amends for an inauspicious start to the campaign, and certainly those with Wildcards active.

We find that, while Everton were mightily impressive in their 3-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday, their fixtures suggest goals and clean sheets will be hard earned in the coming weeks. The Toffees are joined in our group of unfortunates by Steve McClaren’s Newcastle who are on a collision course with all of last season’s top four over their next six matches.

EVERTON

frisking

Roberto Martinez’ side have taken four points from their two matches so far, but with home matches against last season’s top two, and a Merseyside derby also to play at Goodison Park, it could be more difficult for the Toffees in the coming weeks. Away trips to Swansea and West Brom, two of the stronger defensive units outside of the regular top six challengers, could also prove to be tricky assignments.

There have been a number of stand-out performers so far, with Romelu Lukaku (8.1) and Ross Barkley (6.6) both scoring twice and registering an assist in the first two Gameweeks. The Belgian has thrived playing against the top four sides in the past, but with the likes of Swansea’s Bafetimbi Gomis (7.1) and Stoke’s Mame Biram Diouf (6.5) providing strong options at a slightly cheaper price, it may be too much of a risk to back Lukaku to keep delivering. Barkley is more friendly on the budget, and like his team-mate, is among the top ten players transferred in this week in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

At the back, Phil Jagielka (5.5) and Seamus Coleman (6.0) have ownerships of 21.6% and 13.7% in FPL respectively, and look unlikely to justify their hefty price tags given the quality of attacks heading their way in the upcoming period, while Coleman may also have to be more cautious with his raiding runs from right-back.

NEWCASTLE

frisking

After a promising performance in the 2-2 draw against Southampton, Steve McClaren’s men fell to a lacklustre 2-0 defeat at Swansea last weekend, making it seven consecutive Premier League away defeats for the Magpies, with just one goal scored. Given they have to travel to Man United, West Ham and Man City in the next six, the prospects for Newcastle’s Fantasy assets are severely hampered, particularly bearing in mind that they also face home clashes against Arsenal and Chelsea in the same spell.

Papiss Cisse (6,5) scored in that opening weekend draw and also bagged full bonus points but with difficult opponents and the possibility of Aleksandar Mitrovic taking minutes away or even being handed a chance to start, it’s unlikely he’ll be able to significantly add to his tally in the next six Gameweeks. Georginio Wijnaldum was another to find the back of the net against Southampton, but priced at 7.0 in FPL, the likes of West Ham’s Dimitri Payet (7.6) and Swansea’s Andre Ayew (7.1) have both form and fixtures in their favour and look far more appealing mid-price options.

Newcastle have only kept one clean sheet in their last 13 league matches, so while Tim Krul (4.5) and Massadio Haidara (4.5) are kind on the budget, the chances of them registering shut-outs in over the next six appear slim.

CRYSTAL PALACE

frisking

With just two clean sheets from 20 matches under the stewardship of Alan Pardew, the Eagles backline can’t be trusted to provide defensive returns, particularly with clashes against Chelsea, City and Tottenham in the coming weeks.

Joel Ward (4.5) may have collected a ten-point haul against Arsenal thanks to his long-range strike and maximum bonus, but with just two goals from 105 top flight appearances, we can hardly rely upon further attacking returns. Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (4.0), like Ward, has seen plenty of investment this week, with over 78,000 transfers in, but with uncertainty surrounding the pecking order at Selhurst Park among the goalkeepers until Julian Speroni returns from his hand injury in the next few weeks, the former QPR stopper represents a risk.

Further forward, Yohan Cabaye’s 12.7% ownership may be looking elsewhere once this weekend’s favourable home clash against Aston Villa is out of the way, while owners of Jason Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie will hold similar concerns. With Connor Wickham, Glenn Murray and Patrick Bamford all vying for the lone striker role in the 4-2-3-1 formation, few will be looking at the Eagles frontline options for now.

ARSENAL

frisking

While it’s difficult to back against the likes of Alexis Sanchez, there’s no doubt Arsenal face some tricky fixtures in the next few weeks. The Gunners entertain Liverpool and Man United at the Emirates, two sides that have yet to concede a goal, while they also have to travel to champions Chelsea and the in-form Leicester.

With Man City’s attackers facing such kind fixtures, there appears to be no need to own more than one Arsenal attacking option over the coming period, with Sanchez and Mesut Ozil looking the leading contenders for that spot. Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey (both 8.5) have failed to register attacking returns so far and could find their way out of many Fantasy managers’ 15-man squads, while with Sergio Aguero a “must have” for many FPL bosses, the 9.0-priced Olivier Giroud seems unlikely to attract many suitors, despite his well-taken volley against Palace.

Arsene Wenger’s side have conceded three goals in their two matches so far, and with some tricky fixtures in the next six Gameweeks, the likes of Laurent Koscielny (6.0) and Per Mertesacker (5.5), with ownerships of 16.2% and 15% respectively, may struggle to justify their price tags. Likewise, Petr Cech (5.5) has shown some weaknesses early in his Gunners career and may struggle to accumulate clean sheets in the coming weeks.

BE WARY OF…

Man United
Louis van Gaal’s side have struggled in front of goal so far this term, and with three tricky away fixtures (swa, sot, ars) on the horizon, it’s not a great surprise to see Wayne Rooney topping the transfers out this week, with over 197,000 FPL managers shedding the United skipper. Memphis Depay certainly earned a stay of execution following his shift against Club Brugge on Tuesday, but while both players could deliver against struggling Newcastle this weekend, the need to adequately cover the Man City frontline for their favourable run of fixtures may see United assets sacrificed.

Van Gaal’s men do appear to offer a far tighter unit in defence this season, with back-to-back clean sheets registered against Tottenham and Aston Villa. At this point, it’s looks far safer to back the Red Devils rearguard rather than their attack through this tricky run of fixtures. Matteo Darmian (5.7), who has racked up four bonus points so far, continues to present a worthy target: the Magpies visit, plus the home fixture against Sunderland in Gameweek 7 should prove profitable for the Italian and his defensive team-mate.

Chelsea
Many Fantasy managers put their faith in “big hitters” Branislav Ivanovic (7.0) and Eden Hazard (11.5) at the start of the season, but with a meagre four FPL points between the pair, and some difficult match-ups over the next six Gameweeks, it appears the sizeable funds tied up in the duo could really be better spent elsewhere.

Jose Mourinho’s team sheet will be closely monitored on Sunday given his shock decision to withdraw John Terry at half-time at the Etihad. The Chelsea skipper’s 9.8% ownership are facing an anxious wait to see if he’ll start at the Hawthorns, while there is an outside chance Cesar Azpilicueta could shift to right-back instead of the struggling Ivanovic, with new signing Baba Rahman (6.0) an outside bet to make his debut at left-back.

Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas are other big names at Stamford Bridge enduring tough starts to the new campaign, so until we see the Blues conjure up some stronger performances, it may be best to avoid their expensive Fantasy options for the time being, with their schedule easing from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Agree, but Sanchez and Mignolet would cancelled out my points. Memphis almost score against Aston Villa. And he scored 2 yesterday. Though I have Mc Carthy, still think Mignolet has a better chance to keep it clean sheet after two clean sheet in a row.I will stick with Sanchez for today I guess.

I don't remember ever being so affected, either good or bad, by value changes in the game, especially after only 2 gameweeks. Is this season unique or does it show that i should follow gut instincts more than sites like this? I've never been so low after 2 weeks or played my wc so early. My team seems ok now, but it did last week and the week before.

Maybe the last 2 weeks trusting the rmt app in the members section over my head.

this season is slightly more frantic than last but four years ago, it was ridiculous. players up and down three tenths in a week, one player went up 1.5 by december. you were shut out cost wise if you didn't jump early. final values of 120, last year final values were about 107 after 38 weeks.

This year point wise most of us went with chelsea/arsenal and avoided man city.. that was wrong.

      Every season is different.

The biggest difference this time is the new chips. The top 500k will contain a large number of teams who have already played at least one of their chips.

The FFS RMT is an interesting tool but its forecasts are a long way from being perfect, so they should not be followed too slavishly. It doesn't even rate players in the same order as they appear on the FFS Watch-list.

The FFS Template should not be followed too closely either. Walcott was always a poor choice, and an Arsenal fan who is also a strong FPL player actually contributed an article to say that he was by no means certain of his place, but for some reason he still remained a popular choice here. Those who followed that template were always likely to have similar rankings to each other initially, and this season those rankings are not high.

It is also unusual for so many popular established players to underperform in the first couple of weeks, but that will probably change.

The pricing algorithm also changes each year. Last season price changes were fewer and slower than usual, but this time they seem to be faster again. It is still very early in the season and most FPL teams are still active. The low scores and low rankings in the first two game-weeks have resulted in a very large number of transfers and wildcards this week, resulting in a large number of price changes. There are not likely to be quite as many in later game-weeks.

Another reason for the large number of wildcards this week is that the first wildcard is only available for the first 19 game-weeks. So many managers who would normally save their main wildcard for a late-season DGW have decided to play it early instead.

I think the Arsenal fan who posted a community article about Walcott not being nailed on was The Fantasy Freak, who finished in the top ten last year. Walcott was really only ever an expensive punt, but many followers of FFS were beguiled by stats about his points per 90 minutes when he does actually play, and by his getting a hat-trick in the FA Cup Final and starting in the Community Shield.

As you say, it is better to consider a number of opinions, ideas and pieces of information and then make your own decisions, rather than relying too much on the RMT tool or replies to RMT requests.

Also, the price algorithm used to require twice as many net transfers in or out (NTI/NTO) for a second price change for the same player in the same game-week, and 3 times as many for a third change.

But two years ago, the second and third price changes only needed the same number of NTI/NTO as the first, which led to ridiculously fast price inflation and deflation, and FPL also had to introduce a limit of 0.3m on the maximum change in a game-week to prevent things getting completely out of hand. It was necessary to take more hits than usual that season to prevent being left behind by these fast price changes.

Last season they reverted to the old system, which slowed price changes down again.

The increased numbers of NTI/NTO now needed for a second or third change in the same game-week should mean that, although there are a lot of 0.1m changes, there probably won't be that many 0.2m or 0.3m ones.

Gonna put this out there as a question. Why does everyone get so hung up on team value when you only get 0.1 in the bank for every 0.2 of rise? Surely the real measure should be what you can SELL your team for (so that you have more to spend when it comes time to cash in).

I can see why you want to make sure your team's value isn't dropping but the whole obsession with rises seems a bit pointless if you're sticking with the player anyway?

Well yes. A 0.1 rise does contribute towards a higher sale value though, it only counts as half but it adds up over time.

Also you want to get players in before paying over the odds. Why pay 5.9 for Mahrez when you can get him for 5.6 etc.

Another thing is you want to avoid players that drop, this is more important because you lose the entire 0.1 if they drop reducing your sale value in one moment.

What I am trying to say, is Kun is the only season keeper whether he perform or not except injury. This is something Hazard cannot compare with him, because there is no alternative to Kun but there are many options other than Hazard.

Still wrong, if Aguero looked flat and blanked for several weeks he'd be dumped faster than Hazard.

See if I bought Mahrez for 5.5 and keep him for the mid term. I'll be selling him when he could be 6.1, gaining 0.3 when I do so.

Constantly getting on these bandwagons as a point of habit will increase your overall TV possibly as high as 110m by Xmas. The sale value might be around 105m but it affords a much better team in the second half of the season than those who didn't pay as much attention to price rises.

Thanks for this, much appreciated. Definitely see the point of beating the rises, and avoiding the drops... just think too much is made of seeing your players go up in value when you're sticking with them anyway?

Yes for the long term you get half the increase back, but you've already beaten the rise and as long as the player's not dropping is it such a big deal if they're going up or staying where they are?

even a .1 rise or fall can price you out of buying someone because your teams net value is quite static right now. after the 1st week for example if you set your team and had 0 ITB and a player rose .1 you are no longer able to transfer out your 9.0 deadweight player for a player that rose to 9.1. later in the season everyone's price is a .1 rise or fall has a much lesser effect on your ability to get someone. not always mind you! but in general.

          if that makes sense...

Thanks for this explanation. Yes makes sense how 0.1 at the start might as well be 0.5 if you're caught on the wrong side of it. Then as the game goes on it all becomes a bit more fluid anyway. Cheers!

Little things add up. Say you catch 0.5 rises each week (i.e. a 0.1 every 1-2 days; some are claiming over 1.0 for this week alone...), by mid season you would have 110m in TV. Say that is worth 105m in sale value you can effectively get a Ritchie to Sanchez upgrade worth of points for the rest of the season.

I do kinda see that. It does add up doesn't it... but if previous seasons are anything to go by, I just end up re-buying them for more than I sold them for!!

From my experience, it's always good to jump on players that fits the bill for a 0.2 rise in one week - easy 0.1 banked in your TV if you sell on. It is highly unlikely that you will keep a fast-rising player for the whole season as he is likely to drop in price as quickly as he rose once his form dissipates.

It also works in your favour as more often than not, majority of the game would be getting off the same player to get on that bandwagon - currently eg: Hazard > Silva, Walcott > Mahrez, Palace mids > Mahrez, Rooney > Aguero. The sold player would drop in price and could potentially work in your favour when you want to get him back.

Pretty much like the fundamentals of stock trading - buy low sell high. If you're a speculator, you take other punts here and there. If you're more long-focused, you move with the market.

Thanks for this Shifty. Especially the point around the devaluing players everyone is selling off (the sinking ships as FF Geek calls it). So guess it comes down to whether you're a Redknapp or a Wenger type of manager 😉

Just to clarify though, you wouldn't get on a bandwagon just for the sake of it if you didn't like the look of the player? Or you would for the TV?

        1. Shifty
          • 10 Years

I would never get a player in just for the TV. When I refer to players who fit the bill for a 0.2 rise in 1 week, my rough criteria would be:

          1) player is central in the team's attack...often indicating point hogging which is good for FPL
          2) the stats back up his performances (this is where members area is useful as there is plenty of information in terms of touches in the box, final third, threat, creativity)
          3) good immediate run of 2-3 fixtures
          4) replacing a player who is under heavy selling pressure/lost his place/has tough fixtures or a combi of both

At the moment, the only attackers who fit this bill for me are Aguero (for obvious reasons + captaincy candidate), Mahrez (on pens, set pieces and instrumental in team's attack) and Payet (set pieces, strong 2-3 fixtures, good reputation, strong stats).

Not sold on Ayew at the moment as he does look like he will share points with Montero, Gomis, Shelvey, Ki and even Sigurdsson. Plus he might lose out on baps to Williams/Naughton in a narrow victory for Swansea.

Mahrez being our first double riser in one gameweek gives use the first indication of the threshold required for a triple riser. FPL Statistics has been working on the basis that a player's price rise threshold doubles for the second rise in one gameweek. Now they are predicting Mahrez's price rise threshold is triple that required for the first rise in a gameweek.

What does this look like in numbers?
Well, FPL Statistics today estimates the effect net transfers in required for a player to rise once in price in one gameweek to be 39,929.
So for a second rise they think it is 79,858 (remember the NTI counter resets to zero after a rise)
And for a third rise they think it is 119,787.

So they think to achieve a 0.3 rise this week, a player would need at least 239,574 effective net transfers in and in reality it would be more as any NTI above a threshold are lost when the counter resets.

Don't forget the price rise thresholds are estimates and change during the season.

A player can only rise 0.1 in one day. Based on prior years, we think they can only rise 0.3 in one gameweek - but that hasn't been tested this season.

That's similar to how it used to be. I think this system is much better because it used to be very easy to abuse the price rises and guarantee a good rank which is unfair on people who don't use price change websites.

I had feared many dead teams would eventually have Hazard(c) for the rest of the season, but thankfully he's blanked the first 2. Many enthusiastic casuals have probably sold him off by now.

The flip side is it's probably for Silva or Sanchez.

Back to your post...240k for a triple rise would be massive bandwagons that could really hurt if they continue their form.

Yes, they are. Price fall algorithms are based on a proportion of each individual player's ownership. Price rise algorithms are based on a proportion of people actively playing FPL.

Assuming you've pulled the first three sets of figures directly from FPL, I'd say much of that excess NTI might well be wildcard transfers that appear to contribute little or nothing towards the effective NTI calculations.

WC Team, might be last time I can touch it before the weekend, thoughts please?

    Ruddy (Butland)
Kolarov, Darmian, Williams (Richards, Francis at 4.4 hopefully)
    Mahrez, Toure, Payet, Sanchez (Albrighton)
    Lukaku, Gomis, Aguero

0.1 in the bank if I get Francis at 4.4, otherwise all my money spent!

Interested in Depay, but hard for me to pick him over Toure, isn't it?

Not sure about who to put in my starting team
Joel Ward in DEF (right now he is on the bench) or Daley Blind in MID

Ward will get more clean sheet points which is why I'm stuck

We won't get q clean sheet against Villa, we'll win, but not a clean sheet.

Do you guys see Sakho performing this GW against BOU? I don't know if I should (C) him... I am still tinkering between him and the Kun.

I wont be captaining him. With Zarate out (in addition to Valencia and Carroll) he'll probably be playing up front with Lee (inexperienced) or Maiga (rubbish). Either way Sakho will be the main threat and will be the player that BOU aim to shut down.
