The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 4 – The Midfielders

Following yesterday’s look at the latest movements among the goalkeepers and defenders on our Watchlist, which offers player recommendations for the next four-to-six rounds of fixtures, this afternoon we turn our attention to the midfield. Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho sees his stock rise with the Reds fixtures very favourable in the coming weeks, while Xherdan Shaqiri makes his first appearance in our rankings after bagging an assist on his Stoke debut.

Although he disappointingly blanked against Everton on Sunday, David Silva keeps his place at the summit thanks to Manchester City’s particularly favourable upcoming schedule (WAT, cpl, WHM, tot, NEW, BOU), which includes four plum home fixtures. The Spaniard has created nine chances so far this season, joint-third among midfielders, although he has only managed four shots from inside the box, which is a slight concern given his hefty 10.1 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Hot on the heels of Silva is Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez, who has undoubtedly been the star of the season so far. The Foxes attacker has scored four goals in his three appearances, and has registered 21 touches in the penalty box, second only to Alexis Sanchez among midfielders. The Algerian is the most transferred in player this week with 307,000+ new owners in FPL, seeing his price rise to 6.0, and still has a reasonable slate of fixtures (bou, AVL, sto, ARS, nor, sot) over the next six Gameweeks in which to continue his sensational form.

Alexis Sanchez is another non-mover at the top of our rankings, although the Chilean is still waiting to open his account for the new season. Arsenal’s fixtures over the next month or so are fairly mixed (new, STO, che, lei, MUN, wat), but with the 11.0-priced midfielder topping the charts for shots in the box with 12, it’s surely only a matter of time before he returns to the form which saw him score 16 league goals in his first season in English football.

Despite failing to register any attacking returns so far this season, Bournemouth’s Matt Ritchie moves up a couple of places in our latest refresh by virtue of the Cherries favourable schedule (LEI, nor, SUN, sto, WAT). The Scotland international bagged 15 goals and 17 assists in the Championship last season, and while he hasn’t managed to translate that form in the Premier League so far, having totalled nine goal attempts in his first three outings, the 5.9-valued midfielder looks to have the ideal fixtures in which to translate those impressive numbers into Fantasy points over the coming weeks.

Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho is another riser this week, with the Reds facing three kind home fixtures in the next four Gameweeks (WHM, mun, NOR, AVL). The 8.1-rated midfielder has attempted 15 shots so far this season, more than any other midfielder, although the Brazilian has somewhat surprisingly only created two chances for his team-mates.

After registering attacking returns for the third consecutive match, grabbing an assist in City’s 2-0 win at Everton, Yaya Toure remains a great option for Fantasy managers, coming in at 8.8 in FPL. The Ivorian has attempted nine shots this season, although only two have been from inside the area, while he has also created seven chances, just two less than the more expensive Silva, but significantly four more than the 8.9-rated Raheem Sterling. With the fixtures firmly in his favour, the former Barcelona man looks worthy of serious consideration for one of our three City slots.

While he may have failed to register attacking points for the first time this season in Swansea’s 1-1 draw at Sunderland, Andre Ayew still looks an attractive option priced at 7.1 in FPL. The Ghana international has attempted nine shots from inside the box, joint-second among midfielders, and still has some reasonable fixtures (MUN, wat, EVE, sot, TOT, STO) over the coming period, including four home encounters at the Liberty Stadium.

Stoke’s Xherdan Shaqiri has immediately moved onto our radars after providing an assist on his Potters debut, while the upcoming fixtures for Mark Hughes’ men (WBA, ars, LEI, BOU, avl, swa) only further enhance his Fantasy prospects. The 7.0-priced Swiss international currently has an ownership of just 2.8% in FPL, and could be worth considering for those who have endured a slow start to the new season as they look to make up lost ground.

One faller this week is West Ham’s Dimitri Payet, who failed to register any attacking points despite the Hammers scoring three times against Bournemouth on Saturday. Slaven Bilic’s side also face two difficult away trips in the next three Gameweeks against Liverpool and City, although they do also have four favourable matches (NEW, NOR, sun, cpl) over the coming period, which mean it’s probably worth the France international’s 8.7% ownership keeping faith for the time being.

Aside from the aforementioned Mahrez, there are few players offering better value in FPL than Norwich’s Nathan Redmond right now. The England U21 international has two goals and an assist to his name so far, and has picked up five bonus points over the last two Gameweeks. The fleet-footed winger has seen his price rise to 5.6 this week on the back of more than 68,000 transfers in, and while the Canaries fixtures aren’t as favourable over the next six matches (sot, BOU, liv, whm, LEI, new), his bargain price mean he should deliver decent value over the coming weeks.

Eden Hazard has undoubtedly been one of the big disappointments of the new season so far, only returning a single assist in the first three Gameweeks. On the back of a further 100,000+ sales this week, his price has dropped to 11.4 in FPL, and with the cheaper Pedro (9.5) making such a strong impression on his Chelsea debut, bagging a goal and an assist in his 13-point haul, the jury is out on whether the Belgian is worth that extra outlay. The upcoming schedule (CPL, eve, ARS, new, SOT, AVL) isn’t particularly straightforward for the champions, despite having four matches at Stamford Bridge.

After Christian Eriksen missed Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Leicester with a knee injury, and with the Dane still a slight doubt for this Saturday’s home clash against Everton, we’ve opted for Nacer Chadli as our favoured Spurs midfield option for the time being. The 7.0-priced Belgian has racked up 14 points in the last two Gameweeks thanks to a goal and an assist, and has three favourable fixtures (EVE, sun, CPL) to take advantage of before the schedule (MCI, swa, LIV) gets slightly tougher for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Completing our ladder this week are the underperforming Memphis Depay and Sadio Mane. The Manchester United attacker was drafted in by over 20,000 FPL managers ahead of the plum home fixture against Newcastle, after wowing the Old Trafford crowd with two goals and an assist in United’s 3-1 win against Club Brugge in the Champions League qualifier first leg. The former PSV man flattered to deceive once again in domestic action, though, and now has some more difficult matches (swa, LIV, sot, SUN, ars, eve) in which to appease his 22.7% ownership.

Mane, ironically linked with a move to Old Trafford over the last seven days, was forced off after just 24 minutes against Watford on Sunday after suffering a hip injury. The Senegal international is expected to recover in time for Southampton’s favourable home clash against Norwich on Sunday, but with just five FPL points to his name so far this season, and with difficult match-ups against United and Chelsea to come in the next six Gameweeks, the 7.9-rated midfielder needs to get off the mark soon, otherwise many of his 4.4% ownership will be making alternative plans during the international break.

all out attack is definitely more useless than bench boost.

bench boost is more useful than triple captain when ur bench is filled with DGW players/good sgw players that u would want to play.

triple captain in a dgw is where there is an obvious captain option and u expect him to do very well

No it doesn't. Whoever does well in your All Out Attack will automatically do well in the Bench Boost too.

Let's look at the probabilities in the Man City vs. Watford match

The odds of Watford not scoring FOUR games in a row and Man City keeping a clean sheet THREE games in a row have to be extremely slim.

I've had Kolarov from the start and he's genuinely has not put a foot wrong so far this campaign. Now, seeing that people are getting on the Kolarov bandwagon, I fear the "chasing points backfire effect" will come to play this weekend.

Having said that, I believe that this game will be high-scoring thriller and the faithful Aguero captainers will be awarded.

As I said earlier, I own Kolarov but I also own Deeney who I am very tempted to start. He hasn't scored a goal yet and I have a feeling he could explode against an overwhelming favourite Man City team.

Watford are capable of scoring goals. Doesn't look like it at all at the moment but they'll want to prove that they can. No one REALLY expected Chelsea defense to concede 2 goals against both West Brom and Swansea did they?

        1. Demí

"Watford are capable of scoring goals"

Correct. Would you also agree that the other 19 teams are capable of scoring goals too?

"Doesn't look like it at all at the moment but they'll want to prove that they can"

Ofcourse they would. So would any other team in their position, that doesn't mean they will. You're only guessing, and not using facts.

"No one REALLY expected Chelsea defense to concede 2 goals against both West Brom and Swansea did they."

Maybe not but it wasn't that much of a surprise, given their late pre-season and the fact they were down to 10 men, and Swansea are a good attacking team.

In conclusion, there's no strong evidence to suggest your predictions(and that's all they are) will come true.

Why would Watford go to the Etihad and try and fight fire with fire against Aguero, Silva, Sterling and Toure? 4-3 thriller isn't likely based on both teams current form.

I think of these games as more "independent events," statistically. However, that is likely not really the pure case. I think it varies on a continuum, and I would bet more on the trend continuing when a very strong team faces a newcomer/not so strong team, on their home field.

Their intent to prove themselves will still have little bearing on what happened in prior weeks. I do not believe that players' motivation, and more importantly, their on-field performance is impacted by prior game weeks's patterns. They will be motivated based on their opponent and their attitude game time. I think this blurs when the same opponents face each other repeatedly (e.g. a best of 7-game playoff series in any of the big 4 US sports).

The first point is very close to the gambler's fallacy - throw 3 heads in a row and the probability of the 4th throw being a head is still 50%. Before any games are played, the odds of 3 clean sheets in a row are low. But once the first two have come up favourably, the odds have changed to being the same as the odds for that one game.

The second point is pure superstition, although I can certainly feel the temptation to believe it myself 🙂

"We are performing far less than we are capable of doing. We want rectify this ASAP no matter who we're up against" Watford players

That's why I said "very close to". There is the factor of psychology and motivation but I think you're making far too much of it. It pales in comparison to the factor of ability, especially when both teams are equally motivated.

And trying to muddle it into a quantitative analysis like probability of an event series just doesn't hold water.

It's also totally intractable; you can make the opposite claim that their failure so far will have demoralised them, and the loss of confidence will make them even less likely to score. A self fulfilling prophecy.

There is no way to tell 'a priori' which of the two effects (motivation versus demoralisation) will be at play, and to what extent they will compensate or exacerbate their ability deficit.

Totally agree. You *speak* to me (as an organizational psychologist). Back in graduate school, we even did a study using archival data to examine the attributions players make with regards to success or failure in sporting outcomes crossing that with individual or team sports. We examined the quotes players made after a a victory or defeat, to see whether success or failure was attributed internally or externally, and if it varied based on team vs indivi sports. [OMG, I just googled it, and found the study referenced in a book. We did this in 1987 (I am that old). I think I may even have a copy of that journal in my office. Gotta check!]

I actually found the journal, too: Social Psychology Quarterly, Vol. 50, Number 3, Sept, 1987: Self-Serving Attributions for Individual and Group Performance. Oh man, that was a long time ago. It was a fun project to do, I must admit. 3 sports geeks doing a study merging our field of study with our hobby.

Yes I read it awhile ago. I learned that back in Year 8. Just don't agree with comparing the act of flipping a coin to a football match played between professionals.

City are already approaching a club record of consecutive wins so how they are performing is already unusual. I expect them to break the record but I just believe they will leak goals. I even said that Aguero's a great (C) pick but I'm still get all of this grief!

Thanks. No. I moved into the organizational setting where I do typical organizational psychology work. So, I work for a big big company helping the firm establish good practices around employee selection, evaluation, surveys/morale, management & leadership development, etc. My spouse though is in the same field as me, and has her own biz, and she has consulted with a few major league sports teams on management practices. Very interesting to see the business/org culture side of sports franchises.

Probability doesn't work like that. The odds of getting 500 heads in a row is, yes, very small. But the odd of getting 500 heads in a row given that you already have 499 heads, is 1/2.

Of course, this situation is more complicated and there are external variables involved. But the fact is, City have already kept 3 CS, and Watford have already not scored in 4 games. What happens now is relatively independent of that.

There's no causal link between this and them breaking the trend. If anything it's the opposite - it suggests underlying skill.

Ivan to Kolarov, instead. Not chasing. Form, fixtures, and money... I did this move last week, for a hit, and hit the proverbial jackpot. I do not think that is the norm, but "on paper," it would be the right strategy, IMO.

Sanchez has great stats and ain't exactly playing a strong team either, Watford will defend for the life's and kept two cs already, so I don't think there will be as many goals as people think, Aguero may just score 1?

Watford won't be able to handle City at all imo.

                  I tend to agree

If you look at who they've played

Everton - decent attacking side when they want to be

                  2 concedeed

Saints - clearly out of form and Watford at home
WBA - the word attack is not the Pulis dictionary

so 2 comfortable home games for CS. Away from hom to a decent side they let in 2

I'd fear for anyone v City right now.

You could be right, but if your wrong, Aguero isn't the only (c) option this week and maybe not the only stand out option, Sanchez and Hazard also great picks imo, only have Kun and Sanchez though.

Sanchez is a good enough differential as it is, not much need to captain him imo, but that's just how I see it.

Yeh maybe but the swings are massive potential?

The risk of not captaining Kun far outweighs the rewards of captaining Sanchez.

This is a big call but I'm going to go for it.

Plus, Newcastle seem to be playing alright of late. I do think Man City's match is easier, and they have the home field, and Aguero is the most likely player to score a hattie in this league.

Sanchez, Costa, maybe a Man City defender could result in good hauls, but Kun, IMO, has the greatest likelihood of getting the biggest haul of the week (> Captain Kun). I think the other picks could pan out, but ultimately it would be daring to make a non-Aguero a captain choice.

Yeh its a big call, but a calculated risk I think.

I'd agree. In and of itself, Sanchez is a good pick. I just think that Aguero is an even better pick.

    My current team is

    Butland(myhill)

    Kolarov,darmian,gomez(williams,ward)

    Sanchez,mahrez,chadli,ayew,depay

    Aguero,Diouf(Sakho)

    Should i take a hit and transfer ayew+depay-->> Ritchie+pedro ?

Ritchie has decent next 5 fixtures.I know he hasn't score yet but how long it will take him to score given BM are playing Leicester,Norwich, sunderland, stoke and watford next 5 matches
