The ScoutCast – Episode 166 – Patsy

It’s Jonty’s time to curry sympathy this week and he’s on the receiving end of a barrage of cyber-bullying from co-host Granville.

Determined to the belittle Jonty’s Wildcard performance following Callum Wilson’s hat-trick, Granville takes to Twitter before roasting him live on air on the ScoutCast. He seems to have totally missed the fact that I too sold on Wilson as part of my own Wildcard; I’m quite happy for Jonty to play Patsy on this one.

Jonty rolls with the virtual punches to join us as we look back on the Gameweek that saw all three of us refresh our squads. We score our Wildcards out of ten, before scanning the community for Gameweek tales in “Rough with the Smooth”.

We then take on your questions, as we assess Pedro’s pedigree, the lure of Aleks Kolarov and the merits of a well-rounded squad in the light of the FPL chips.

This ScoutCast was first broadcast live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday. Be sure to subscribe to our channel for news of upcoming live Casts. You can view the broadcast in full via the larger player below but, if you prefer the edited audio version, you’ll need this link or the smaller player.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Williams, Shaw, Richards

Which 2 defenders to play? This sites RMT feature says Richards and Shaw but I'm not so sure.

      Richards and a coin toss.

Man United defence not fully tested yet but they look capable of scoring. I'd go williams just for home advantage

    BENCH BOOST

People keep saying save it till a DGW, but I disagree,

    - Realistically when we prepare for a DGW we aim to bring in circa 3/4/5/6/7 DGW players, obviously dependent on how big a double game week is, but I have never had 14 DGW players in a GW, never close, and probably never will (unless its GW38 and all the big boys are playing and I still have a WC) – because to play this game well, you play 4-6 Gameweeks ahead, not just 1 GW ahead.

    - SO, if we will all PLAY our Best Players and DGW players in our starting squad, then we are left with Single GW players on our bench. Therefore no benefit to Bench Boost during DGW.

    - SO, best time to use BB is when you look at your bench and they are all starters, in form, playing favourable fixtures - could be early in season to get a psychological advantage, or GW38 for a sprint finish across the line, but dont think you need to save for DGW - In My Opinion.

    Any counter arguments?

Even if you don't play it in a DGW, the longer you are in the season, the higher your TV so you can afford a good bench and utilise the chip more effectively.

You can prep for a bench boost by using some FTs on a strong 15 and then WC after. At least high TV gives you the possibility to do that.

Yes Beavis I agree DGW and higher TV at the end of the season in principle seems the most sensible time to use bench boost!

I wrote a long comment on the extra importance of TV this season based on a number of factors, including bench boost, last night but I've rewritten now as a community article now. Watch this space!

There might be occasions in a DGW when you would've benched a heavy hitter to fit in another DGW option - Bench Boost would allow you to still play those heavy hitters who have a single GW.

      I agree.

The wildcard would (probably) be used to sort out the mess of a team the week after and you'd presumably have taken points hits the week before getting all the DGW in which would negate any real benefit.

I say play when you look at your team and have a real headache over who you would start.

Wouldn't use Gw38 as its a minefield for predicting line ups

      Your second point:

'SO, if we will all PLAY our Best Players and DGW players in our starting squad, then we are left with Single GW players on our bench. Therefore no benefit to Bench Boost during DGW.'

This is exactly the benefit to using Bench Boost during DGW!

The appeal is that you can load up on DGW bench fodder, and play them, as well as playing and keeping all of your SGW big hitters.

And really, it doesn't matter who's on the bench and who's in the starting line up when you play your Bench Boost - apart from your captain, they all count the same.

Exactly. Like loading up on Leicester players last season, easily bench-able outside of a DGW. Also these lesser teams often find form at that time of the year as they seek to avoid relegation.

          • 10 Years

Exactly. Plenty avoided Hull players for that DGW (for example) - they thought their single gameweek players would outscore them, and it wasn't worth the risk. The defence kept two clean sheets, and N'Doye also did well... that's the sort of player it would be great to have on your Bench Boost!

Agree. I said this yesterday to someone or other, albeit more briefly 🙂

There is one marginal benefit. You can have your normal 3-7 DGWers, and another, benched, DGW keeper. apart from that your right, your bench is going to be SGW players anyway so play it when fixtures are favourable.

    9. Billy Gilmore
      • 12 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

If there's a bumper DGW37 then a WC GW36 followed by DGW37 bench boost could be huge. Then you'd also have 2FTs for GW38 and butchering your team will matter little as there's only 1 week left in the season. And with only 2 DGW possibilities this season (I believe) and up to 12 matches postponed it's certainly a possibility.

there's such a high ceiling on the bench boost compered to the AOA chip that using it 4 GWs into a 38GW season feels imprudent and wasteful.

I think you should be able to use the chips during a gameweek. How many times have we wished to be able to retrospectively change a captain or regret benching certain players? There would still be the uncertainty over whether it's the right time to use it, but it's less of a punishment than now if it goes wrong.

You are not far wrong probably.

Having 15 DGW players will be difficult (almost impossible) to achieve without a wildcard. If you want to use BB as well you have to wildcard a week early. Then you have the complication of a squad composed of 5 or 6 teams' players probably and for 3 weeks - the week before, the DGW itself and (with one change) for the GW after. Otherwise you are taking hits and diluting the advantage of the BB.

As Jarvish has pointed out, if the very best teams all reach the FA Cup semis (Chelsea, City, United, Arsenal for example) the above plan might be workable. But how likely is that? And even if it happened, those teams have very expensive players and how are you going to fit them all in to a budget of (maybe) 106.00?

We won't know for sure till we get past the FA Cup QFs but I am of the opinion that the DGW BB for GW 37 is likely to be a mirage. It may work out; more likely it won't.

So the case for holding to GW30 onwards is not all that strong. There should be 2 big DGWs (34 and 37). One of them at least will need approaching through FTs rather than a wildcard so that's the one where you might use triple captain. The other will probably utilise a wildcard and unless Jarvish's dream scenario materialises it will probably be best to use the wildcard in the DGW itself. So no BB possible in that case unless you use triple captain earlier (there might be a 3rd DGW caused by the LC final as well).

The obvious advantage of BB in a DGW if you can do it is not 15 DGW players. It's the ability to keep important SGW players and still count them.

It is all quite uncertain and I will probably keep my options open and wait. But if I had a really good bench in a SGW and thought I could get good value from it I wouldn't mind going earlier. I rate the value of BB as 15-18 points. Any time you think you have a good chance to make or exceed that I reckon.

      1. Wingate
        • 13 Years

Good analysis. Keeping options open and remembering the option exists if you do have a very strong bench one SGW is the way to go. Thanks.

You're implying we currently have amazing players that we bench each week... we don't. A 4.5/5.0m bench defender/midfileder with a single gameweek now is worth much fewer points than one with a double gameweek later. Imagine those defenders with two games such as Sunderland last year or Matty Phillips as a midfielder who racked up the points! We wouldn't play them in a single gameweek over a 6.0-7.0m player who has more pedigree. All out attack is a confusing chip, don't try and over-complicate this one. More games = more points with the bench boost.

Quick little RMT for this weekend.
After a disastrous start I decided to wildcard. Heres what I've come up with - 0.1m ITB.

    Butland (Hennessey)
Kolorov, Bellerin, Shaw (Steven Taylor, Targett)
    Sanchez, Pedro, Shaqiri, Barkley (Westwood)
    Giroud, Aguero, Wilson.

I like having the differential in Shaqiri but I'm not fully sold on Barkley..
Could go for Mahrez instead but then where shall I spend the other 0.7m ITB?!
    Help would be much appreciated.

It would be for a hit, and I agree that he probably needs to go, but I think Ozil does too, and I'd rather have Silva than Yaya.

Saints were 1-0 down and in danger of leaving Europe and Koeman still dint get Mane on.. Post game he said it would have been too risky to play him cause of the injury... especially so early in the season. Can see him starting off the bench personally

Hi Guys, On a WC, RMT please?

    Butland/Schmeicel
    Gomez/Cedric/Morgan/Kolarov/Richards
    Mahrez/Mane/Silva/Sanchez/Ayew
    Wilson/Aguero/Deeney

Have 0.6 ITB with the view of mane>coutinho in GW6.
    What do you think?

    1. sleecc

Upfront too light, front 8 rotation headache, bench points.

Downgrade Ayew and upgrad Deeney to Gomis. Defence is a bit of a concern as well with doubts on Gomez starting every week as with Kolarov just because Pellegrini likes to rotate him. Put this along with Cedric who i don't think is far off being dropped and you may have problems.

am I crazy to consider captaining Coutinho? He looked great against Arsenal and hit the woodwork twice, West Ham's defence was no-existent last week + Adrian still banned.

    Thoughts please?

      Nice punt.
Was trying to get him too, but can only get him in place of Hazard.
So I'd prefer save my FT and go with Hazard.

But I'll try get him as soon as possible!

Captain Hazard? That's a good punt.

Yep but his last match gave me some doubt!
If he plays in the hole, replacing Willian, he'll surely score and assist.
But in case he keep the left side, might be harder.

          Anyway I've got Aguero! 🙂

        Ah cheers Nads.

So far I've captain Cazorla, Kane and Aguero...and have received 6 additional captain points....so i thought i'd go with something less obvious...probably bite me in the arse though.

Yep. I captained Hazard last week and not upset, compared to those who captained Kun.
He would surely have scored a brace if played behind Costa.. Willian were so sloppy in front of goal.

      He can't finish - don't go near him as a (c) IMO

So many captain options....choosing Aguero seems like the sensible choice...i should do that, you're right.

        Courtois

        Gomez Richards Kolorov

        Mahrez Pedro Sanchez Yaya Coutinho

        Wilson Aguero

        Bench: Sakho Target Oxford

Sanchez seems a nice option, given Arsenal is bound to perform after the slow start!
