Scout Report – Ola Toivonen

In an attempt to boost their options in the final third of the pitch, Sunderland snapped up Swedish attacking midfielder Ola Toivonen on a season-long loan deal from French club Rennes last week. After sealing his switch to the Stadium of Light, Toivonen reckons his history with Black Cats boss Dick Advocaat and fellow summer signing Jeremain Lens will help ease the transition:

“We worked for a year together at PSV and it worked very well. I’m excited to work with him (Advocaat) again. The coach is one thing, but you need to have a bit of patience when you come to a new club because you need to adapt to new team-mates. I know Jeremain from our two years together at PSV. That helps a lot. It’s always nice to have someone around you if you have some questions about the club or team-mates. He’s a fantastic winger with some incredible speed and he can provide good crosses to the strikers.”

The History

Born in Degerfors, Sweden, Toivonen began his senior career at local club Degerfors IF. He bagged eight goals in 41 outings for the Superettan side, before moving up a division to join the Gothenburg-based Orgryte. After tallying six goals in 26 appearances for Orgryte, Toivonen earned a move to top-flight outfit Malmo.

In his debut campaign with Malmo, Toivonen chalked up three goals and as many assists across 24 outings, having instantly muscled his way into the first XI. The following season harvested far greater rewards, with 14 goals and four assists arriving in 30 appearances. His goal scoring exploits inevitably attracted attention from a bevy of European clubs and – amid interest from West Ham United – PSV Eindhoven landed the Sweden international in January 2009.

Toivonen would spend five seasons with the Eredivisie giants, amassing 60 goals and 23 assists in 139 league appearances. In his first full year with PSV, the six foot two inch attacking midfielder carded 13 goals and four assists but started just 22 out of a possible 34 league ties. The next two years produced a stronger attacking output, with 33 goals and ten assists recorded across 61 appearances before injuries restricted his minutes in 2012/13.

Having fallen out of favour midway through the following season, Toivonen completed a transfer to Rennes in January 2014 and went on to net seven goals in 14 starts. He managed seven goals in 30 appearances last term, marking a significant downturn in his influence.

Since making his competitive bow for Sweden in January 2007, Toivonen has racked up nine goals in 43 appearances. In the last year, however, he’s made just one start for the Blue-Yellow, underlining his declining relevance on the international scene.

The Prospects

Although Toivonen has operated as a traditional centre forward during his time with Rennes, he’s spent the remainder of his career playing in “the hole” behind a lone striker. Given that he’s been ineffective as the spearhead of Rennes’ attack since his switch to France’s top tier, it was unsurprising to witness Advocaat field him at the number ten slot against Aston Villa.

Interestingly, the Swede’s weekend debut brought about a change in system for the Wearsiders, as Advocaat’s decision to replace Lee Cattermole with Toivonen at the break saw Sunderland switch from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1 in order to accommodate the new boy.

Indeed, the Swede’s arrival affords the Black Cats boss the option of mixing up his system, having previously lacked a strong candidate to occupy that number ten berth. Toivonen made the most of his second-half-cameo – setting Lens through for his goal with a perfectly weighted pass – so Advocaat might well be tempted to retain a similar set-up for their next encounter.

Taking a deeper look into his output last term, Toivonen boasted a superior shot accuracy (45.4%) to any of Sunderland’s midfield and forward starters, yet his shot conversion rate (12.72%) was less impressive and would have ranked third behind Steven Fletcher (13.5%) and Jordi Gomez (12.9%). If Advocaat sticks with Toivonen in a central support role, he’ll be buoyed by the fact the former PSV recruit registered seven goals and two assists in just 1264 minutes when last handed a run of starts in “the hole” during the 2012/13 season.

Certainly, the upcoming schedule offers Fantasy potential for the Wearsiders. Advocaat’s men square up to Bournemouth, West Ham, West Brom and Newcastle in the next six Gameweeks, suggesting they could soon get their first win on the board. Coming in at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Toivonen is identically priced to Lens, though, and bearing in mind the former has picked up attacking returns in all four of the opening Gameweeks, he looks the likeliest candidate for those considering a route into Advocaat’s attack.

I'd get both while they are on form and then you can sell with some profit , once they falter.
      They link up very well.

Certain games you would rather not have too many from the same side though, tight game where there might only be a goal in it and don't want players tied up in the sane fixture. There is logic in having only one to try an alternative elsewhere

I have neither (having sold Ayew on WC last week...)

Think i'd prob get Gomis out of the two...purely because i think 3 big hitters + one mid priced mid is a good structure going forward...and currently Mahrez has that 4th mid spot.

Here is how the David de Gea transfer saga played out, according to Real Madrid.

    1. Man Utd agreed to start negotiations yesterday.

    2. Real Madrid initiated conversation.

    3. Man Utd would only do deal if it included Navas.

    4. Both clubs agree deal & Madrid send documents to Man Utd at 12.39pm.

    5. United replied at 8.39pm asking for some changes which Madrid agree to immediately.

    6. Madrid send contracts to Man Utd at 10.32pm & wait for Man Utd to send them back signed.

    7. Man Utd agree deal with Navas at 10.53pm and then contract sent to Navas to sign.

    8. Man Utd logged in on TMS to log details of De Gea deal, not Navas at 11pm, deadline point in Spain and simultaneously send contracts to Madrid. Madrid receive documents at 11.02pm and tries to access TMS but is closed down

    9. 11.26pm TMS invites Madrid to introduced details of De Gea because the transfer deadline is next day. Madrid, in case there was room to get done, decide to send contracts to league even though they know deadline has passed.

    10. Madrid have done everything they could at all times for deal to take place.

sorry but I disagree, a deadline is a deadline for good reason. Everyone has to adhere to it, They (both clubs) had months to sort this out and they both messed up, All lose out due to be amateurish. Serves them right to be honest. The person I feel sorry for in all this is DDG

I feel sorry for him as well.

Go on then...What is the good reason for being so inflexible...what would happen of somebody had some common sense and said it was only a matter of a few seconds on an electronic highway.
          Describe in detail the ramifications.

Other clubs could object saying that rules have been changed to suit the big guys. You cant just change the rules of the game because it suits a couple of parties because they messed up. ok, you say just because it was a few seconds, what then if another clubs says, sorry we were 2 minutes late next time, how can you possibly say its ok this time but not in the future.

              • 11 Years
              8 years, 9 months ago

Why would another club object to it ?....And if they did why would it matter ?

A few seconds on a done deal matters nothing...nowt...nowhere...Wxcept to those who want it to matter.

I agree, unless RM signed someone like Aguero, or someone similar in ability, there was really no chance of us getting Karim Benzema.

All European clubs have had their deadline so they can't replace anyone with anyone else now.

So only option is really to go to a club with a surplus, of which there aren't many.

"However, a scan has confirmed that the problem is only minor and Liverpool expect him to be fit for the crunch Premier League clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford on September 12.

Belgian staff hope that if Benteke doesn’t recover in time for Thursday’s qualifier that he will be available for Sunday’s trip to Cyprus."

It's one of those "good" injuries that prevents him from being injured for real... Also called "the Mourinho injury".

Benteke can't have picked up the injury at the weekend.
He was just stood around for most of the match, waiting for a cross to come his way.
        Hardly touched the ball.

    Kompany (6.3m) to Kolarov (5.8m) for a FT ?

Does it make sense to hold off on Kompany > Kolarov until before the deadline? - Kompany's price seems to be rising quicker than Kolarov so surely can sell closer to the deadline for higher profit?

I don't agree. Kolarov could quite easily outscore Kompany over the next 6 weeks. Plus free's up funds.

Ward or Soare on the other side. They seem to be the ones playing on the most attacking teams with 4.5 defenders. Soare might be a nice punt supporting Bolasie....The pair of them play well together.

    Stick with this?

    Butland (McCarthy)
Kolorov - Williams - Richards (Shaw, Gomez)
Pedro - Sanchez - Payet - Mahrez (Westwood)
    Aguero (C) - Lukaku - Gomis

1xFT (1 used already Depay to Pedro), 0.4itb

Team looks ok to me, have a healthy TV of 101.9 + 0.4itb, but a terrible OR!
