Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 4

Our last glance back at the previous round of fixtures brings Palace’s new goal-getting wide man into focus. Swansea’s outstanding start to the season is also acknowledged, whilst the lack of impact from big hitters is causing plenty of concern.

The Player

Bakary Sako’s weekend goal and assist ensured Jose Mourinho had little to cheer about in his 100th home match in charge of Chelsea.

Having fired the winner at home to Villa in his Gameweek 3 debut, the Mali international went one better as Palace emerged from Stamford Bridge with all three points. After just two matches, Sako – who has also earned maximum bonus on both occasions – has racked up 23 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

Delve into the underlying data and it’s clear to see his immediate impact is no fluke. Despite playing only half of the first four Gameweeks, Sako leads the way amongst midfielders for shots on target, with a total of eight – put into perspective, team-mates Wilfried Zaha, Yannick Bolasie, Jason Puncheon and Yohan Cabaye have mustered seven attempts on target between them.

Given that Bolasie and Zaha managed four strikes apiece last term, Sako’s arrival clearly offers the Eagles greater firepower in the attacking midfield three slots. His 15 efforts for Wolves – albeit at a lesser level in the Championship – illustrates his eye for goal and the midfielder’s performances so far suggest he’s stepped up seamlessly to the top-flight.

At a price of just 5.5 in FPL, Sako looks set to follow in the footsteps of Riyad Mahrez and offer Fantasy managers another budget candidate to consider in their five-man midfields. Upcoming clashes with City and Spurs may deter many from immediate investment, with the schedule taking a turn for the better in Gameweek 7. With Pardew’s emphasis on attack, though, last weekend’s result suggests the Palace new boy has the talent to reward early adopters and flourish regardless of fixture.

The Team

A 2-1 home win over United maintained Swansea’s superb start to the season as Garry Monk’s men went into the international break in fourth spot in the Premier League.

The manner of the weekend win underlined Monk’s tactical acumen. Devoid of the injured Jefferson Montero, the Swans boss shifted from 4-2-3-1 to a midfield diamond after seeing his side go behind, with Andre Ayew moved up front alongside Bafetimbi Gomis. The impact was instant, as the duo bagged a goal apiece to condemn the Red Devils to their first defeat of the campaign.

Having also scored twice away to Chelsea, Monk’s men have deservedly earned plenty of Fantasy interest in the first month of the season. With four and three goals accrued respectively, Gomis and Ayew have undoubtedly been the standout candidates but they’ve been backed by a supporting cast including Montero, Jonjo Shelvey and Gylfi Sigurdsson that has created chances aplenty.

One look at the upcoming schedule suggests more of the same, too. With trips to Watford and Villa twinned with home encounters against Everton, Spurs and Stoke, Swansea sit third in our Season Ticker for attacking potential over the next six Gameweeks. Given their form so far, the case for having at least one, or even two Swansea options, could well prove a very viable tactic.

The Talking Point

It’s been a season that could barely have been more frustrating for Fantasy managers so far.

Manchester City aside, few, if any, big hitting teams have managed to meet our expectations – indeed, although the Etihad club sit atop the league, Sergio Aguero has scored just once, compounding our misery further. For many, the Argentine’s blank at home to Watford was just the latest in a series of captaincy fails as the campaign stutters out the blocks.

In midfield, we’re desperately awaiting the likes of Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez to ignite, whilst up front, it’s arguably worse – not one of the top eight scoring forwards started with a price in excess of 8.0. Aguero, Diego Costa, Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney have all failed to justify the hefty outlay, leaving mid-price and budget options to lead the way.

Surely it can’t continue like this. The likes of Aguero and Sanchez, in particular, have posted strong underlying stats that suggest keeping the faith is the wisest move. Whilst Hazard has clearly toiled for Chelsea so far, his record as Fantasy gold over the previous three years cannot be argued – flash back to last term and the Belgian managed just one goal in the first six before finally finding his form.

As we’ve seen time and again, the big hitters almost always rise to the top. Having a little patience seems the best answer but in the midst of an international break, with wildcards flying around, that’s never easy.

I've always believed that with fantasy football you should stick to your guns with your team selection. A good team/player doesn't become bad overnight and they will turn things around but this season may be the first season I concede defeat to that opinion. With so many wildcards being played and so many 'big' players doing badly not going with the trend of wildcarding could leave me miles behind (alternively it could leave me with some huge differentials including Hazard).

Basically should I stick with the team I thought would do well preseason or wildcard and get the template?

Jumped on a couple of wagons. Kola and Wilson, had Mahrez at the start but still without any Swans, still got Hazard and Wijnaldum in midfield. Azpi could go if I Wildcard. Probably get Silva or Sterling.

      Very tricky question Grumbly.

I only started playing this game seriously for the last season and a half, and played the game in general for 3 seasons.

First season, I was very much a 'pick players i like' kind of manager. 2nd season, i started to enjoy playing the game more tactically and became more patient and considered with my picks.

Last season I employed a tactic of staying patient with the high calibre players while remaining flexible with the bandwagons and mid-priced options, a tactic that got me success.

Like most, i've started this season poorly. I do believe results will converge to a mean and pre-season picks will eventually come good. However, for now, it's a case of damage limitation and humbly admitting form > fixtures in a big way for now.

As with previous seasons, anything can happen after the international break. Things may very well revert to the way it should be but i'm afraid form is all we have to work with at the moment and template is template for a reason.

      1. GrumblyBlowfish
        • 10 Years

I'll probably wait until after the international break and give it one more gameweek. If things go really badly I'll probably have to Wildcard.

My other thinking at the minute is 'is the wildcard that important?'. If I save it until GW10 but I'm already miles behind will it really make that much difference?

Even thinking about taking Hazard out seems like madness because he has the potential to hit form at any moment. Could score a penalty next week then once he's opened his account he could go from strength to strength.

It's been a strange start to the season anyway.

Yea you're very right about the question of how much impact the WC can have. I still have my WC but I do wish I played it in GW2 - the continued success of GW1's picks is baffling and has massively inflated the team values of managers who played it that week.

To think Gomez, Darmian, Mahrez, Ayew, Gomis, Yaya, Silva, Kolarov in on WC would have bagged you almost a million in profit so far is staggering and will be a massive, massive advantage come 2nd half.

I've been playing this game a long time although not seriously until a few years ago and I've never seen anything like it. I usually laugh at all the random transfers in in the first week. Seems like it could be the year of the casual though!

Arsenal don't have some Egocentric billionaire running the club. they have to do things for business reasons. One of those is keeping the fans happy, but they have to try and do that without spending too much money.

If they had a billionaire then all that would matter would be winning the league. But thats not how normal businesses work.

2/3 years ago this was true, but Arsenal now have the same kind of money that Utd have coming in, so this is not an issue any more.

The money is there, and the board have made it clear that Wenger can buy any player he wants bar Messi & Ronaldo.

I agree with the DM back up, Arteta is ok, but certainly if Coquelin gets a long term injury, we are screwed as far as winning the league is concerned.

But for me the position we are lacking in is Forwards, but then I wouldn't have said that at the end of last season, I really felt that this was Walcott's year, so disappointed to see him on the bench all the time, I really do NOT get Wenger's obsession with Giroud.

haha so confused as to why he has taken so long to rise and to why Hazard took so long to fall. Certain rules for the top FPl scorer i think. RVP took for ever to fall last few years

falls are based on the % of transfers out. Hazards ownership is still v.high he hasn't really had many % loss

    How is this looking?

    Krul / McCarthy
    Kolarov / Cedric / Francis / Prodl / Muneisa
    Hazard / YYT / Ayew / Mane / Shaqiri
    Aguero / Vardy / Wilson

I will be rotating Ayew , Mane , Shaq , Wilson and Vardy on form primarily and on fixtures...
I will be benching these fixtures-
    ars , MUN , ARS , che , mci, liv , ARS , CHE

The other 4 fixtures are always outside the top 4

They have Martial valued at £5.8m...

Kane is probably Worth 30m+ and Mane 15-20.. so that's a margin of error of about 50%.. which would put Martial up to around £8m..

One of the main reasons Hazard has been the top scorer in FPL were the BAPS, he basically just needed to score a goal, didn't matter whether it was a penalty or regular goal, sometimes just an assist was enough and he was automatically on 3 BAPS.

After the changes in the BAP system this year Hazard is far from worth his price tag, seriously doubt he will even end up in the top 10.

He was on 27 BPS from one assist in the West Brom game. He is still a BAPS magnet.

it will be interesting over the coming weeks as the community is split between Pedro and Hazard.

Similar to Fabregas vs Hazard last season but I think there's more substance to Pedro than Fab. I think Pedro is a valid FPL option on his own merits...not just a 'Hazard-alternative'.

Even if you halve his bonus points from last season, he would have ended up on 212 points.

Yes, thats what ' would have ' meant. That was just to disprove your bonus points theory.

If you think that he will end up with lesser goals and assists this season, then its just your prediction.

Analysis was performed at the start of the season with last years data using this years Bonus Points. Hazard would have only been down a handful of points. I'll try and find the article for you.

So now both Benteke and Ozil are an injury doubt, great!

Could anyone help with my team, I know it's hard for everyone but just any advise would be greatly appreciated. I have 2 FT to use.

    Ruddy / Butland
    Huth / Muniesa / Martin / Richards / Ward
    Chadli / Ozil / Silva / Payet / Depay
    Aguero / Wilson / Benteke

    Thanks
