Scout Scribbles – Janmaat Concern for Magpies

Daryl Janmaat withdraws from Holland duties due to a knee complaint. John Stones is ruled out of England’s qualifiers, whilst Wayne Rooney is a doubt. Gareth McAuley is available for Northern Ireland, whilst Switzerland are optimistic on Xherdan Shaqiri’s chances of recovering from a thigh problem.

Janmaat withdraws from Holland Duties

Daryl Janmaat has been ruled out of the Netherlands squad ahead of their Euro qualifiers due to stiffness in his knee. Newcastle have since released a statement confirming they are optimistic that the right-back will be fit to face Norwich City at home next Gameweek.

The Scout Says: In spite of the fact that Newcastle United have claimed just one clean sheet this term and shipped 10 goals in their previous quartet of match-ups, Janmaat remains on our radar because of his supreme underlying statistics. Only Aleksandar Kolarov (one every 62.1 minutes) boasts a better shot frequency than Janmaat (68.1 minutes) among those defenders who’ve made at least four appearances. Furthermore, the marauding Dutchman has amassed two more shots on target (six) than any defender. Considering that the Magpies now enjoy an excellent batch of fixtures through to Gameweek 15 (NOW, sun, STO, bou, LEI, cry), Janmaat could serve as an excellent differential if passed fit for the Canaries clash.

Stones Ruled Out for Three Lions

John Stones – who’s carrying a minor knee injury – will play no part in England’s final pair of Euro 2016 qualifiers after being ruled out yesterday afternoon.

The Scout Says: With Seamus Coleman nearing a return and Leighton Baines closing in on a return, Everton’s defence is slowly getting back to full strength. Fantasy managers will be hoping that Stones recovers swiftly as the Toffees gear up for an exceptional run of fixtures from Gameweek 11 (SUN, whu, AVL, bou, CRY, nor, LEI, new, STO). For now, Phil Jagielka (5.4) presents the safest route into their rearguard, while Tim Howard (5.1) – who’s ten points clear of any Everton defenders by virtue of eight save points and four bonus points – should pique the interest of anyone scouring the market for a shot-stopper. Ultimately, the fact that the Merseysiders conceded an average of one goal per match through the opening eight Gameweeks – despite facing off against six of last term’s top eight outfits – bodes well for their clean-sheet prospects over a kinder stretch.

Rooney Worry for Hodgson

Wayne Rooney, Danny Ings and Jonjo Shelvey all missed training for England yesterday, with the United skipper rated a doubt for Friday’s clash with Estonia after picking up a knock against Arsenal.

The Scout Says: With England already through to Euro 2016, it seems unlikely that Rooney will be risked for the Three Lions. The United skipper’s record-breaking displays on the international front have masked his domestic toils, which have seen him score just once in the league this term. The arrival of Anthony Martial has forced Rooney into a central support role at United, and although their fixtures take a turn for the better in Gameweek 11, Martial and Juan Mata – who has scored or assisted in five of the last seven – look the likeliest routes into Louis van Gaal’s attack.

McAuley Fit for Northern Ireland

Gareth McAuley has been given the go-ahead to play for Northern Ireland during the international break – the defender has been passed fit after suffering a recurrence of a calf complaint against Crystal Palace last weekend. Meanwhile, Baggies team-mate Jonny Evans is still touch-and-go for his nation’s crunch tie against Greece on Thursday.

The Scout Says: Although West Brom’s flawless road record came to an end at the hands of the Eagles, the West Midlanders remain a fine source of mid-priced defensive assets in light of Tony Pulis’ resilient brand of football. Craig Dawson remains the prime pick among the back four owing to his security of starts and fitness, while Boaz Myhill ranks second in the keeper rankings for total score (41). Both will continue to be in high demand as they embark on a favourable trio of match-ups (SUN, nor, LEI). The trip to Carrow Road is arguably the sternest test on paper, yet investors in West Brom’s rearguard will be emboldened by the fact that only Southampton (21) have conceded fewer shots inside the box in away matches than the Baggies (22).

Swiss Optimistic on Shaqiri

Having sat out Stoke City’s 1-0 road win over Aston Villa due to a thigh strain, Xherdan Shaqiri is expected to be passed fit for Switzerland’s Euro qualifiers, according to head coach Vladimir Petkovic:

“I have no doubt about the condition of Shaqiri. He will play on Friday (against San Marino).”

The Scout Says: Priced at 6.8 in the wake of a 0.2 depreciation, Shaqiri has failed to establish himself as contender in the mid-priced midfielder bracket. Turning out for a Stoke outfit that’s tallied just eight goals in as many matches, the former Bayern Munich recruit lays claim to a solitary assist across 407 minutes. Moreover, his underlying statistics don’t particularly portend imminent attacking returns, with just two shots on target and seven key passes arriving this campaign. Those managers yearning for Potters coverage ahead of a decent trio of encounters (swa, WAT, new) might consider the 6.0-priced Marko Arnautovic, who – apart from notching two goals and assists – places top among Stoke’s midfielders for attempts (11), shots on target (four) and key passes (nine).

It's funny how a player like Janmaat has become the centre of people's attention round here (including mine) despite coming off the back of a six-nil defeat. his points tally is terrible this year.

We all think we're more thoughtful with our transfers. Newcastle have fixtures on their side. His knee "stiffness" doesn't sound like anything serious. His points tally wasn't helped by his red card, and his stats point towards attacking returns against weaker opposition.

But despite all of that, I can't help but imagine I'll be regretting transferring out Cedric on my wildcard.

Strong chance of it. Dave is shot imo and has been for a while. I know people will say about his goal record but his overall team performance has been appalling

Now we have players who can contribute more, hold the ball up and score, it'll be a struggle for him to get back in I reckon

      Don't sell Cedric.

Newcastle are quite interesting. They did well against United at Old Trafford and did well against City for half a game. They have had a terrible batch of fixtures to start the season as well as injuries at the backthe...I have no idea if they can step it up....

They certainly won't be getting many CS's but maybe a couple, and with a couple of assists for Janmaat....maybe.

Too late, Cedric went in my wildcard mayhem last week!
I have an injured(ish) Evans and 0.1 spare, so annoyingly I'm 0.1 away from simply bringing Cedric back in.

but, to be honest, if I had Cedric now I'd probably be upset I didn't have Bertrand...

I am with you on this. Looking at their defence, they make horrible mistakes. Just take a look at how Ighalo easily ran off behind their center backs and how easy it was for Deeney to slide a ball in his path, even if I discount the 6-1 fixture, I wouldn't go anywhere near them.

Janmaat is injured I guess. Either way I wouldn't jump on him unless I see improvement in their defence. They look really terrible at the back and I wouldn't but a defender worth 5 million just for the hope of attacking outputs.

Mane over Tadic, Ritchie to Hoolahan are the ones that came up for me.

Defence looks decent, I just fancy Bertrand so much over Cedric, especially given the fact that there's only a 0.3 difference between them.

I think they are both fairly attacking, Koeman has rotated Cedric a few times, and Bertrand is one of their best players on the pitch. Also was a BP hog last year.

I think he will outscore Cedric over the season from now, enough to spend an extra 0.3 on him.

Tadic and Richie > Payet and Hoolihan or a bench fodder mid.

Moreno to a Spurs defender (Toby would be my preference)

Looks good but I'm not a big fan of the strong front 8, would rather have a Payet or Mane in midfield. Defence I would prefer a couple more solid options with Janmaat injured and Moreno. Maybe a dull Dawson in there. Also prefer Bertrand to Cedric.

I was thinking Wilsons injury came at a fortuitous time for me. If he had been fit I would never had wildcarded last week. Because of that I rejigged my entire team. Sure I would have got Aguero captain but I would never Souare CS, KDB haul, Vardt points & Ighalo points.

I also think Wilson had quite possible been punching above his weight for points so it would maybe have been a good way to step away anyway.

This way at least it was certain he would not start from day one so you could make your transfers early and pick up price rises on his replacements.

I feel for the lads injury I really do. A terrible thing to have such a long term injury in what is the biggest season of his career and I really hope he comes back strongly at the end of the season. But it makes life so much easier when things like this are black and white for our decision making.

For what its worth I agree that Wilson was punching above his weight but I also think Ighalo is as well. Very difficult to get rid of forwards who are so cheap unless you keep cash in the bank

I agree. But I have a midfield of Payet - KDB - Sanchez - Mata - Mahrez so Ighalo is going to be on my bench most weeks. Now that has to be better than Drinkwater or Wanyama doesn't it?

You will be fine. But this week just gone was an exceptional week for making progress. Aguro being so lowly owned and only 20% captaincy. We never see that. The constant lean weeks are what made it all possible

I had real bad TV for the first month. (My SV went down below 100 for most of it) It is all about where you spend the money. My defence is extremely cheap for example fortunately with CS so few and far between it doesn't seem to matter much.

I think a lot are going purely on the date on FPL for his return. There's been no suggestion he's even back in training yet. I wouldn't bring Kolarov in at this point, but i won't take him out until at least the week after i hear Clichy is back training with the squad.

No I don't think he can replicate his golden season 2 years back. And yes, in FPL terms I wouldn't necessarily buy Emre Can, but he certainly would improve under Klopp imo.

And anyway, he is significantly more defensive player than Ramsey. It's telling enough that Ramsey may play AMC or AMR, whereas Can may play RB or CB. Ramsey just doesn't have that defensive mindset that Can has.

I'm not so sure, watched the Germany game a month or so ago, where Can was playing the box to box role. He looked like the weakest link in the game, but probably because of where he was being played by Rodgers week in week out.

I would play him and Milner together, really not a Henderson fan, apologies if that offends any Liverpool supporters out there.

can i get any comments on my wildcard team please?

    Begovic, Hennesey
    Huth, Davies, Cook, Soare, Cameron
Hazard, De Bruyne, Sanchez, Puncheon/Bolasie, Gosling
    Aguero, Vardy/Sakho, Ighalo

That defence could struggle, but I think you know that.

Pick 2 out of Haz, KDB and Sanchez IMO, and get in Pelle and Kolarov.

Or Haz > Mane and use the rest to upgrade defence.

Don't like the three former Plymouth Argyle players (Puncheon, Bolasie, Gosling), Vardy over Sakho

Having 4 players that expensive actually makes your team look like you're seriously short of money. I would wildcard that team without blinking an eye.

You may as well make Begovic Butland to free up 0.5 at least it isn't a transfer waiting to happen. Downgrade Hazard to Mane as well and upgrade Puncheon to Payet. Spend any money saved on the defence.

Nah....I just put forward the idea that maybe Martial may give Depay another chance to impress....and maybe he could have done....but looks like he's sent him the other way instated.

                He was rubbish.

I wouldn't make too far-reaching conclusions based on the Arsenal match though. It was lost almost before it started.

He did have Ashley Young behind him, which maybe put him off having to worry about covering him. And also Bellerin had him in his pocket all game.

    A) Mane + Lukaku
    B) Pelle + Walcott

    ?

Given Everton's fixtures (barring next couple), tempted to have Lukaku in on WC. But option B seems better on balance?

B for me, although the difference in value between Lukaku and Pelle is only 0.2 so you could always swap at some point

I'd be tempted. Leicester at home is a good fixture for attackers. I don't like Cout as a long term pick, flatters to deceive in FPL terms.

3 players off my team with that change! Martin, Francis & Pelle instead of Bellerin, Targett and Ighalo

Yeah fair enough, usually the right choice. I only did my 2 FT's early on Sunday evening because of price rises and falls which meant i'd have struggled to do them at the end of the international break. I did Pelle and Mane in for Diouf and Pedro

I am planning to do the same transfer, for free. Liverpool have so many live games though, and then there's the Klopp factor. But i'm hoping that takes a while to kick in and their games are pretty tough really. But Sadio may not make it back into the starting line up after travelling to Africa.

      So many questions. I guess i wouldn't consider for a -4.

      BBC say this:

"The former Manchester United star will join up with Michael O'Neill's squad on Thursday and hopes to play in the final qualifier in Finland on Sunday."

So, FPL-wise it looks hopeful for Evans owners. Even if he doesn't come back for the next game, it won't be long. I think that means you should consider Olsson dead-weight, unless he plays ahead of someone else.

no he admitted he hasn't adapted to the physical demands of playing there, twice a week at high intensity. Nothing about life.

He's had fewer than 8 league games in a brand new league, and let's not forget he's done well in the few CL games he's had. Not exactly 'been shite'

    Using my WC. Any suggestions?

    GW 9 Template

    Myhill (Butland)
    Kolarov Bertrand Souare (Bellerin Nyom)
    Sanchez Hazard Cabaye Mahrez (Westwood)
    Aguero Vardy Berahino

Plan to bring in Mane and Pelle over the next two weeks. Seeing if Hazard will finally explode against Villa. Or should I not include Hazard in my WC?

If you want Mane and Pelle, I'd get them in now for Haz and Berahino, I'd also do Cabaye to Payet. You will probably end up taking hit otherwise (due to injuries etc)

If you're already on your wildcard, why wait on Mane and Pelle? Leicester at home next!

Also, consider preparing now for the inevitable need for Everton in GW11. Lukaku is the obvious candidate (if you can stomach him). Either bring him in now or leave funds to make sure you can bring him in one transfer instead of two.

I wouldn't want a Leicester double-up from this point on. 3 tough defences in the next 6.

      I like the Cabaye pick.
