Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Janmaat Concern for Magpies

Daryl Janmaat withdraws from Holland duties due to a knee complaint. John Stones is ruled out of England’s qualifiers, whilst Wayne Rooney is a doubt. Gareth McAuley is available for Northern Ireland, whilst Switzerland are optimistic on Xherdan Shaqiri’s chances of recovering from a thigh problem.

Janmaat withdraws from Holland Duties

Daryl Janmaat has been ruled out of the Netherlands squad ahead of their Euro qualifiers due to stiffness in his knee. Newcastle have since released a statement confirming they are optimistic that the right-back will be fit to face Norwich City at home next Gameweek.

The Scout Says: In spite of the fact that Newcastle United have claimed just one clean sheet this term and shipped 10 goals in their previous quartet of match-ups, Janmaat remains on our radar because of his supreme underlying statistics. Only Aleksandar Kolarov (one every 62.1 minutes) boasts a better shot frequency than Janmaat (68.1 minutes) among those defenders who’ve made at least four appearances. Furthermore, the marauding Dutchman has amassed two more shots on target (six) than any defender. Considering that the Magpies now enjoy an excellent batch of fixtures through to Gameweek 15 (NOW, sun, STO, bou, LEI, cry), Janmaat could serve as an excellent differential if passed fit for the Canaries clash.

Stones Ruled Out for Three Lions

John Stones – who’s carrying a minor knee injury – will play no part in England’s final pair of Euro 2016 qualifiers after being ruled out yesterday afternoon.

The Scout Says: With Seamus Coleman nearing a return and Leighton Baines closing in on a return, Everton’s defence is slowly getting back to full strength. Fantasy managers will be hoping that Stones recovers swiftly as the Toffees gear up for an exceptional run of fixtures from Gameweek 11 (SUN, whu, AVL, bou, CRY, nor, LEI, new, STO). For now, Phil Jagielka (5.4) presents the safest route into their rearguard, while Tim Howard (5.1) – who’s ten points clear of any Everton defenders by virtue of eight save points and four bonus points – should pique the interest of anyone scouring the market for a shot-stopper. Ultimately, the fact that the Merseysiders conceded an average of one goal per match through the opening eight Gameweeks – despite facing off against six of last term’s top eight outfits – bodes well for their clean-sheet prospects over a kinder stretch.

Rooney Worry for Hodgson

Wayne Rooney, Danny Ings and Jonjo Shelvey all missed training for England yesterday, with the United skipper rated a doubt for Friday’s clash with Estonia after picking up a knock against Arsenal.

The Scout Says: With England already through to Euro 2016, it seems unlikely that Rooney will be risked for the Three Lions. The United skipper’s record-breaking displays on the international front have masked his domestic toils, which have seen him score just once in the league this term. The arrival of Anthony Martial has forced Rooney into a central support role at United, and although their fixtures take a turn for the better in Gameweek 11, Martial and Juan Mata – who has scored or assisted in five of the last seven – look the likeliest routes into Louis van Gaal’s attack.

McAuley Fit for Northern Ireland

Gareth McAuley has been given the go-ahead to play for Northern Ireland during the international break – the defender has been passed fit after suffering a recurrence of a calf complaint against Crystal Palace last weekend. Meanwhile, Baggies team-mate Jonny Evans is still touch-and-go for his nation’s crunch tie against Greece on Thursday.

The Scout Says: Although West Brom’s flawless road record came to an end at the hands of the Eagles, the West Midlanders remain a fine source of mid-priced defensive assets in light of Tony Pulis’ resilient brand of football. Craig Dawson remains the prime pick among the back four owing to his security of starts and fitness, while Boaz Myhill ranks second in the keeper rankings for total score (41). Both will continue to be in high demand as they embark on a favourable trio of match-ups (SUN, nor, LEI). The trip to Carrow Road is arguably the sternest test on paper, yet investors in West Brom’s rearguard will be emboldened by the fact that only Southampton (21) have conceded fewer shots inside the box in away matches than the Baggies (22).

Swiss Optimistic on Shaqiri

Having sat out Stoke City’s 1-0 road win over Aston Villa due to a thigh strain, Xherdan Shaqiri is expected to be passed fit for Switzerland’s Euro qualifiers, according to head coach Vladimir Petkovic:

“I have no doubt about the condition of Shaqiri. He will play on Friday (against San Marino).”

The Scout Says: Priced at 6.8 in the wake of a 0.2 depreciation, Shaqiri has failed to establish himself as contender in the mid-priced midfielder bracket. Turning out for a Stoke outfit that’s tallied just eight goals in as many matches, the former Bayern Munich recruit lays claim to a solitary assist across 407 minutes. Moreover, his underlying statistics don’t particularly portend imminent attacking returns, with just two shots on target and seven key passes arriving this campaign. Those managers yearning for Potters coverage ahead of a decent trio of encounters (swa, WAT, new) might consider the 6.0-priced Marko Arnautovic, who – apart from notching two goals and assists – places top among Stoke’s midfielders for attempts (11), shots on target (four) and key passes (nine).

I had Özil and sold him before he played the best match in this season. I just didn't expect that he'd play so good against United. This could be his season and as an Arsenal fan I expect more goals (5-10) and assists (15+) this season, because I admire him and his vision. He's a really good player and creates a lot of chances almost every match, it just sucks that other players didn't score when they should.

    Myhill (Butland)
    Kolarov Bertrand Souare (Bellerin Nyom)
    Sanchez Hazard Cabaye Mahrez (Westwood)
    Aguero Vardy Berahino

Plan to bring in Mane and Pelle over the next two weeks. Seeing if Hazard will finally explode against Villa. Or should I not include Hazard in my WC?

Reposted reply from over the page:

If you're already on your wildcard, why wait on Mane and Pelle? Leicester at home next!

Also, consider preparing now for the inevitable need for Everton in GW11. Lukaku is the obvious candidate (if you can stomach him). Either bring him in now or leave funds to make sure you can bring him in one transfer instead of two.

I wouldn't want a Leicester double-up from this point on. 3 tough defences in the next 6.

      I like the Cabaye pick.

It's usually the done thing to declare your favourite player ever as somebody who played a long time ago...or sometimes a very long time ago.
Having watched most of those "favourite" players since very many years ago I'm gonna buck the trend.
I've watched Cantona, Shearer, Henry, Gazza, Klinsman....blah, blah, blah...Too many to list...but....

Alexis Sanchez take a bow....you win...

I wonder if someone with a good memory can help me out.

Some years ago, someone here (possibly Granville) linked to a hilarious recording of a Scottish radio phone-in. The topic of the phone-in was players who should be included in the Scotland squad. I could swear that the clip was a guy arguing that Ikechi Anya should have been included, and the presenter eventually, through stifled laughter, let the guy in on the obvious reason that Anya wasn't Scottish.

But Anya is in the Scotland squad. Have I totally remembered that clip wrong? Was it about a different player? Or has something changed about Anya's status since then?

Anya chose to play international football for Scotland, the land of his birth, but would also have been eligible for England (through residence), Nigeria (through his father) or Romania (through his mother).[18][19][20] He received his first call up to the Scotland national team on 23 August 2013 for Scotland's World Cup qualifying double header in September against Belgium and Macedonia.[21] He made his debut for Scotland against Belgium as a substitute on the hour mark on 6 September 2013 in a World Cup qualifying match, although Scotland were already unable to qualify for the final tournament. He made his first start and scored his first international goal in the following game, a 2–1 win in Macedonia on 10 September.[22] On 7 September 2014 he scored against the world champions Germany in the first match of UEFA Euro 2016 qualification in Dortmund, Scotland lost 2–1.[23]

He likes players who put in a shift each and every game, and loves when he see stats such as his team running x amount more KMs a game than their opponents. His preferred playing style is very similar to Pochetino (I believe, someone correct me if I am wrong), he likes bringing young players through and his team to press high up the pitch to force mistakes in their opponents half.

When Borrussia got it right is was impressive, but the danger is the team running out of steam around the 70th miute of a game.

Not sure what "up his street" means. Milner's passing as a CM isn't and has never been as positive as people suggest. I'd see Klopp-Buvac using him as a winger when going defensive, but not as a CM.

            "Up his street"...ideal....

Milners work rate and pressing is second to none higher up the pitch...or at least was when he played there for City.

            1. Camp No No
              • 10 Years

His work rate is good, no doubt, pressing definitely second to many, but not what I'd worry about. It's the way he plays when he has the ball. But I could definitely see him as a Grosskreutz kind of workhorse on flank, if he can adapt to Klopp's tactics which is not sure yet.

    7. Camp No No
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

In general, he likes pacy players who are physically and tactically ready to work hard according to the plan. Grosskreutz despite his obvious lack of talent, always played a lot, though in different positions.

About lightweights, just think of Kagawa, Reus and Götze.

does rotation of defenders and keepers with like 70% efficiency provide more points than a fixtureless defence?

Not sure what the last part of your question means but successfully rotating keepers does harvest more points than the same one playing keeper each week.

Now if you define successful as perfect, that would be 100% effective. Aguero is asking exactly how effective you have to be in picking your keepers?

I'd say that as long as the two you pick are sensible, it is not tricky to achieve high efficiency. Thats a big if on initial selection though sometimes.

yeah rotation of keepers does make a lot of sense..but theres definetely a risk involved in that...i think same goes for defence by putting 4 players in 4.5-5 mil range and roating them and using the money elsewhere makes sense

Any gamers out there that are interested in trying Star Wars: Battlefront? The beta starts tomorrow until 12th October but if you wanted to get in early I have some spare codes going. I have a few for PC, some for different locations for PS4 and only one left for XB1.

If you'd like a code let me know - would be easier if you had Twitter so I could DM it to you 🙂

    Cheers!

    Butland, McCarthy
    Francis, Kolarov, Dawson, Targett, Muniesa
    Sanchez, Ayew, KDB, Mahrez, Westwood
    Ighalo, Aguero, Vardy

    A: Ayew ---> Mane
    B: Ighalo ---> Pelle
C: Westwood ---> Mane (Bench Ighalo vs ARS)

Only problem with C is that it gives me a big benching dilemma for the GW after (something which I never normally allow myself to have)

        C) I refute the term "benching dilemma," and suggest it is more like "starting options." Many fantasy games are based on this managerial skill -- starting the right guys and benching the right guys. You should have the confidence that, 80-20, you'll get the decision correct, and in the off-chance you have a surprise benching or injury post-freeze, you have a strong bench person to take that spot. Go for it. Trust your managerial prowess!

perhaps you may be right. but then guarantee I bench Ighalo then he scores haha

The Don would never have such an attitude...(tongue in cheek)

It's a flawed analysis because if you go with a Westwood type instead, and your starting player gets a blank, it's the same difference as if you started the wrong guy and the bench guy outperforms the starter. A blank is a blank, it just feels worse if you have someone on the bench who scored more and should have been started. That option is priceless, if you can swing it (depth is good). I want to have 5 strong mids, in lieu of my Westwood, but cannot do that until I WC in a few weeks. If you can do that easily, it's a strategy worth considering.

Agreed, Souare over Hangeland if you can afford it. That defence is workable, but you may need to use an extra FT or two, as only Bertie and Nyom are the only ones who are nailed.

How Liverpool could line up -

    -------------------Mignolet--------------------
Clyne --- Skyrtel ------ Sakho --Moreno
    ------Can / Milner-----------Lucas---------
    Firmino/Ings -- Lallana -----Coutinho--
    --------- ----Sturridge/Benteke -----------

Be fascinated by any Liverpool fans thoughts 🙂
