Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – International Round Up

Eden Hazard scores one spot kick but misses another for Belgium. Kevin de Bruyne is also in the goals for Marc Wilmots’ side. Georginio Wijnaldum nets for Holland but Tim Krul is forced off with a knee injury, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson scores as Iceland draw with Latvia.

De Bruyne Form Continues

Kevin De Bruyne scored an inch-perfect free-kick for Belgium in their Euro 2016 qualifying encounter against Andorra to continue his rich run of goalscoring form.

The Scout Says: Given that Sergio Aguero and David Silva may well be set for spells on the sidelines, while Yaya Toure is in a race to be fit for Manchester City’s home tie against Bournemouth next weekend, De Bruyne stands out as the prime source of Sky Blues coverage. The former Wolfsburg star has flourished since his switch to England’s top tier, racking up three goals and two assists in his last three starts. Looking at the past three Gameweeks, only Alexis Sanchez carded more shots on target (six) than De Bruyne (five), who also placed in the top 10 for key passes (eight). With match-ups against the Cherries, Norwich (home) and Aston Villa (away) over the next month, the stage is set for De Bruyne to sustain his laudable productivity.

Hazard’s Spot of Bother

Eden Hazard scored one penalty and missed another as Belgium romped to a 4-1 victory over Andorra. As well as the afore-mentioned De Bruyne the likes of Simon Mignolet, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld all started for Wilmots’ side, whilst Nacer Chadli appeared off the bench as a late sub.

The Scout Says: Hazard has now missed two of his three penalties for club and country this campaign, following an abysmal second effort for the Red Devils last night. Although the reigning PFA Player of the Year notched one goal and two assists in his previous three league outings, Hazard’s performances – bar the Arsenal encounter – have fallen well short of his lofty standards. From a statistical viewpoint, the 11.3-priced midfielder ranks joint-third among midfielders for key passes (28), but is ranked 32nd for attempts (12), underlining his limited goal threat. That being said, his 27% ownership will be hopeful of a revival as the Blues prepare to host an Aston Villa outfit that shipped eight goals in their last three road clashes.

Mixed News for Newcastle

Georginio Wijnaldum fired a low strike into the bottom corner to open the scoring for Netherlands in a 2-1 win over Kazakhstan last night. On the injury front, Tim Krul fell awkwardly in the closing stages and, according to Holland boss Danny Blind, may well have sustained a “bad injury”.
The Magpies stopper left the stadium on crutches and is set for scans to ascertain the full damage.

The Scout Says: Wijnaldum has been relatively impressive during the Magpies’ eight-match winless streak, offering the most quality of their struggling midfield contingent. The Dutchman has racked up two goals and an assist so far, earning 30 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – double the tally of any Newcastle midfielder. Valued at 6.8, Wijnaldum is likely to be at the nucleus of his attacking play if they can discover their groove during an excellent run of fixtures (NOR, sun, STO, bou, LEI, cry). Krul’s potential absence, meanwhile, would promote Rob Elliot as a budget option between the posts. With Karl Darlow also injured, Elliot – at just 4.0 in FPL – would offer Fantasy managers a cut-price route into Steve McClaren’s backline as the Magpies look to climb the table.

Darmian Amongst the Azzurri Goals

United’s Matteo Darmian netted a long-range effort during Italy’s 3-1 victory over Azerbaijan. Southampton’s Graziano Pelle featured from start to finish for Antonio Conte’s side but failed to play a part in any of the goals.

The Scout Says: Darmian turned out a host of assured performances for United through the first five Gameweeks but has since been substituted at half time in each of their last two road matches. The Italian’s propensity for picking up yellow cards saw him clamber onto the Suspension Tightrope last time out after he earned a fourth caution of the campaign in the 3-0 loss to Arsenal. With Luke Shaw injured and Daley Blind classified as a midfielder, the 6.3-priced Chris Smalling looks the safest route into the Red Devils’ rearguard for those eyeing up their kind schedule from Gameweek 11 onwards.

Sigurdsson Notches in Iceland Stalemate

Gylfi Sigurdsson scored an excellent solo effort in Iceland’s 2-2 draw against Latvia. The Swansea playmaker dribbled from inside his own half before slotting into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

The Scout Says: Priced 0.1 below Sigurdsson, at a cost of 7.2 to 7.3, Andre Ayew – who’s notched four goals in eight starts – has emerged as the choice route into Swansea’s midfield this season. Although the Iceland international lays claim to more shots (18) than the Ghanaian winger (17), only five of these (compared to Ayew’s 13) were from inside the box, illustrating his penchant for a long-range effort. The Icelandic international has struggled to rediscover the form that racked up seven goals and ten assists last term and has just one goal and a single assist to his name. With a largely favourable quintet of fixtures (STO, avl, ARS, nor, BOU) to follow, Ayew –providing he recovers from a knock that forced him to withdraw from Ghana duties – looks the likelier source of points for Garry Monk’s men.

To everyone saying giroud will start in the premier league and walcott in the champions' league - i disagree. Wenger has always played a striker similar to Giroud against Bayern to try and hold up play. He went so far as to even start Sanogo. He won't play walcott knowing he'd probably get bullied by the bayern defence

    Hello!

I don't know if anybody uses the Gargatron anymore now there are a couple of more modern alternatives which give more stats and work without Google Chrome, but in case somebody finds it convenient or likes it for nostalgic reasons I just updated it to work for the 2015/2016 season with adjustments for the new chips and all that.

If you already installed it in any of the last two seasons you just need to restart Chrome and it will work as before. If you never used it but would like to give it a try then head over to the link at the bottom of this post and you can install it. Please note that it requires the Google Chrome web browser to work. After that you head to any POINTS page of any FPL team you'd like to see some quick stats about, and a green calculator will appear in the right corner of the browser address bar. Click it to run the Gargatron.

To show what it does I'll post my own stats. They're probably not very good.

    Total captain score 102
Captain score if you had swapped all C / VC 74
Captain score as % of overall score 23.83%
    Highest possible captain score 215
Captain score as % of your highest possible captain score 47.44%
    Number of different captains 3
    Number of different players 31
Three most owned players Mané (8), Benteke (7), Ruddy (7)
    Most captained player Agüero (6)
    Total score of autosubs 16
Total score of unused subs 41
Unused sub score as % of of overall score 9.58%
    Points spent on transfers 4

    It also shows how far behind/ahead of you are of a certain set ranks (1, 100, 1k, 5k, 50k, 100k, 200k)

Finally I'd like to point out that you do not need to be logged in to FPL for the Gargatron to work, and that it is and will always be free, free from ads, and not affiliated with any company or organization.

While comparing point differences between two ranks ,it could be valuable to see the actual points of the rank, not only the point difference between two ranks. eg.

          Hi Marstar!

Unfortunately I don't have the time to convert it to something that would work on Firefox. I'm so sorry. I'll run your stats through it if you post your FPL ID.

Ideally I would have made it work on all browsers from the start, but back then a few years agoI made it a priority to make it simple to install, update and use for a reasonably big number of users. And so it happened to be a Chrome extension instead of the more generic, but less easy to use, bookmarklets etc.

The Aguero injury may just work out in favour of GW8 captainers as it shuts the door on non-owners from being able to make up any future ground. The horse has bolted!

Our Aguero exit strategy could be as season defining as GW8 was.

I can't see past Pelle, then it's whether I sell Pedro for a hit to maintain City cover..? I think the Chelsea rennaisance could start vs Villa though so I might sit tight a week.

It's really screwed my strategy of owning the big midfield 3 and Aguero. Now everyone can afford them.

Who would you give the armband to between the 2?

I just think he's a better player who I'd be much more prepared to trust with the armband. Better for bonus etc and extremely explosive too

      Pelle this week.
Normally I'd say Mane because Pelle doesn't get BPs but Mane plays late in the week and Koeman has often brought him off the bench in the past when he's returned late from international duty.

    Myhill - McCarthy
    Darmian - Bellerin - Kolorov - Whittaker - Oxford
    Sanchez - KDB - Walcott - Payet - Mahrez
    Pelle - Martial - Ighalo

I wish FPL had an option to forfeit a players points altogether if they don't start a match.

For example, Walcott is benched and comes on for 10 mins for 1 point and I have Ighalo on my bench who scores a brace. Before the week has started I have chose the option to forfeit Walcotts points if he is benched and then the sub collects the points instead,

Nothing worse than the odd 1 point cameo especially as I have benched 3 of Ighalos goals already so far.

        1. Tadic is the new Eriksen
          • 11 Years

I don't see the sense in selling Mahrez, never mind for a hit. So no from me

          1. Gussy
            • 9 Years
            8 years, 8 months ago

The thought process is that he may be rotated and have some 1 point cameo's in the future while KDB (or Mane) have nice fixtures and could explode. Since Mahrez is in so many teams it could be a nice differential, although on the flip side, could be a terrible differential if mahrez continues his form and we have no way of getting him back in.

            1. Tadic is the new Eriksen
              • 11 Years
              8 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, it could work out I guess, if he carries on being rotated. But theres every chance that he will play 90 mins for the next 10 games and carry on bringing home the big points. If its a continuing trend, then maybe this move is worth further consideration, but not just yet.

Yeah true, I guess the wait and see approach is probably the safer one too. Now I need to decide if I should leave money ITB or just splurge it down back a little (on WC)

Going to WC, will look something like this up front:

        Sanchez KDB Mata Wally Mahrez/Mane
        Lukaku Pella Ighalo

Playing in a 3-5-2 formation. I have the money ITB to get Eriksen, Payet or Mane but not sure if it is worth it considering the value Mahrez presents when he actually plays
