Scout Notes – Gameweek 9 – Monday

Bojan Krkic hands Stoke a third successive league win with a first-half spot-kick at the Liberty Stadium. Bafetimbi Gomis blanks for the fifth straight Gameweek, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson drops to the bench as Swansea’s poor run of form continues.

Bojan Wins it for Potters

Bojan Krkic netted from the penalty spot to earn Stoke City a 1-0 win over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium – the first time they’ve recorded consecutive road victories since December 2011. The Spanish forward claimed his second goal in four leagues starts since returning from a long-term knee injury, highlighting his potential as a third striker. Priced at 5.3 and taking precedence over Charlie Adam on spot-kicks, Krkic could well deliver points on a budget as Stoke lock horns with the likes of Watford, Newcastle and Sunderland over the next five Gameweeks.

The Staffordshire outfit had no clean sheets to their name through the opening seven Gameweeks but have now kept the opposition out in their previous two match-ups. Considering that the Hornets – who rank bottom for goals scored (six) this campaign – are next on the agenda, Jack Butland’s 8.5% ownership will be hopeful of a third successive shut-out. In terms of their rearguard recruits, Geoff Cameron’s 4.5 price tag and security of starts renders him an attractive squad filler over the short term as Ryan Shawcross closes in on a return to fitness. With the fixtures turning against the Potters from Gameweek 12, though, long-term investment in Mark Hughes’ men looks less appealing.

Swans Toils Continue

Swansea are now winless in five outings following their home defeat to the Potters and have triumphed in just two of their last 11 league encounters. Allied to that, Garry Monk’s men have failed to secure a clean sheet in six of their previous seven fixtures, frustrating Ashley Williams’ sizeable 9.5% ownership. Nonetheless, an upcoming road tie against an Aston Villa side that’s drawn a blank in all but one of their home clashes this term portends an improvement on that front.

Bafetimbi Gomis and Andrew Ayew were hugely ineffectual: the former mustered just one attempt on target and was continuously flagged for offside, while the latter didn’t card a single shot at goal. Both players currently sit in 19% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) sides and have scored one goal between them (courtesy of Ayew against Spurs in Gameweek 8) in the last five league matches. Whilst many will be keen to part company, the Swans square up to Villa, Norwich and Bournemouth in the next four and may yet profit from that favourable run.

Meanwhile, Jonjo Shelvey entered the referee’s notebook for the fourth time this season, putting him on the precipice of a one-match suspension – as the Swans’ top creative outlet (18 key passes), his potential absence would influence our assessment of their attacking prospects. Gylfi Sigurdsson’s diminishing band of owners will be looking for the exit door, though, after the Icelandic international was benched for the first time this term, as Garry Monk opted for Modou Barrow in the attacking midfield slots instead.

Want to get Bellerin (should've done it last week), who would take out?

    Darmian Richards Ward Kolarov Bertrand

To be quite honest i really do not know. I took Kola out last week for him.

Maybe Ward? But that would be too much in defense, depends on the rest of your team.

Very difficult. Your defence is pretty good, I wouldn't want to lose those 3 heavy hitters. They have decent fixtures coming up.

If I had to pick one, I'd say Darmian. United's defence seems so unpredictable.

I'd sit tight, as you may find you want to replace Kolarov soon anyway and Bellerin could be that man. Unless you go with Kompany.

With today's news about Kolarov participating in 'light running', alot of the FFS discussion for those who kept for varying reasons are now in a dilemna with Clichy also returning imminently. So I thought it would be a timely reminder of a previous hot-topic about Clichy vs Kolarov:

2014/2015 PL Season Man City Stats

Kolarov with Clichy on bench: 8

    Played 90 - 7

    Didn't play 90- 1

Kolarov without Clichy on the bench: 8

    Played 90 – 8

    Didn't play 90: 0

Clichy with Kolarov on bench: 14

    Played 90: 13

    Didn't play 90: 1

Clichy without Kolarov on the bench: 8

    Played 90: 8

    Didn't play 90: 0

Number of times Kolarov came on for 1 point: 5

Number of times both started together: 0

Conclusion (tl;dr) : Kolarov started 16 times and Clichy started 22 times in the PL last season, whichever one started, played 90 minutes in almost all occasions bar once for each player. Kolarov came off the bench (when Clichy started) 5 times for 1 point. Rotation risk – yes but when he doesn't play, a solid backline/4th defender would ideally be pivotal for such a strategy to work.

Yes I would, if last years' stats are to go by then having a 4.5m-ish nailed on defender as a backup would be viable.

think it's worth pointing out that although Clichy started more games last season, Kolarov started the vast majority at the end of the season, so he has been more recently first choice.

Kompany has missed the last 5 and it's well documented they concede regularly without him, maybe an improvement if he is ready.

The argument against that is with Kolarov you have a defender playing OOP as a left winger most of the time, playing for the likely champions who score alot of goals on a regular basis. Agreed with a solid back-line, you should have that anyway. I'd rather have Kolarov over say Azpi/Darmian

By all means, good job I seen this as I was about to do the same 🙂 How would analyse this then? Kolarov plays more home games? This is where you'd ideally want him? Champs league factors needed to be taken into account i suppose

I'm not sure how to analyse this - too many variables but right off the batt it seems Kolarov played against opponents who were likely to leave alot of space on the right back position

Janmaat, Pieters, Ivan, Trippier, Janmaat, liv RB, De Laet, Walker at WHL, Naughton

It don't think it took consideration that Kolarov was coming back from injury a couple of times last season, whilst Clichy was fit nearly entire season. Therefore Clichy was afforded a good run of games, while Kolo was benched getting back to full fitness, which i don't think he got to by end of the season

Martin Demichelis was a notable absentee from Tuesday morning's open training session, though Aleksandar Kolarov returned today after a hamstring problem.

Demichelis appears to have joined David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Fabian Delph and Gael Clichy on the side-lines as the Blues warmed up before Europe's media ahead of Wednesday evening's Champions League clash with Sevilla.

Manuel Pellegrini's press conference will reveal the latest on all our injured stars' progress.

Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Bacary Sagna all looked in good shape and there seemed no further additions to the Blues' current absentees.

Dawson -- Safe, reasonable, pick. Some might say boring. Their fixtures after GW12 do make it easy to justify getting in another defender [say Toby].

Janmaat -- Well, NEW can't seem to defend and he seems to be getting attacking points so the risk is you left expecting attacking points to justify owning him. The more risky [fun?] choice.

I'd get in a Spurs or Saints defender but Dawson out of the two if I had to choose between them.

    1) Does this look set up correctly for the weekend? Or play Ighalo over hazard?

    Butland
    Bellerin Dawson Bertrand
    Sanchez KDB Hazard Mane Payet
    Pelle Vardy

Hennessey; Ighalo, Souare, Simpson ... 1 FT and 0.1 mill in the bank

    2) Is it worth taking out Hazard for a free? If so for who?

Could alternatively play AOA chip and start Pelle, but it feels like a waste to use it on a week where the attacker coming in doesn't have an ideal fixture. Pelle and Cedric could both easily just get 2 points.

    Butland - McCarthy
    Kolarov - Dawson - Richards - Haidara - Targett
    Sanchez - Yaya - Ayew - Mahrez - Morrison
    Pelle - Vardy - Martial

I've been too busy scrambling to fix the defense (and to sell Aguero last week) to even think about Morrison. Was going to do Kolarov to Bellerin like most people but with the latest news is it finally time to upgrade Richards/Haidara/Targett?
