Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 10

Five players toppled off the Suspension Tightrope this Gameweek, as James Milner, Jeffrey Schlupp, Erik Pieters, Fernandinho and Jack Colback totted up their fifth cautions of the campaign and incurred a one-match ban.

Fortunately for the former quartet, they will serve out their suspensions in Capital One Cup clashes in midweek. Colback, on the other hand, misses Newcastle’s home tie against Stoke next Gameweek as the Magpies were knocked out in the previous round of the competition by Sheffield Wednesday. The midfielder was already a doubt for the Potters clash anyway, after he was forced off early in the second period due to a challenge from Lee Cattermole – early reports indicate he left the stadium on crutches.

In terms of other new suspensions, Fabricio Coloccini received a straight red for a foul on Steven Fletcher that led to the Black Cats’ penalty opener. Like Colback, he’ll be unavailable for selection when the Magpies welcome Stoke to St James’ Park, though reports this evening suggest that the Tyneside team are set to appeal the decision.

Post match, Magpies manager Steve McClaren clearly felt that whistler Bobby Madley made a match-changing error:

“It’s simple: he’s wrong in my opinion. Referees are part and parcel of the game and you control your performance – you can’t control the opponent or the referee and they can affect the result, and they have done today, not so much the opponent, but definitely the referee.”

McClaren’s opposite number, Sam Allardyce, also reckoned the dismissal was a little harsh on the Argentine:

“We’ve taken full of advantage of a piece of good fortune. I did think it’s a foul, personally. I’ve had a look at it. If he hadn’t made contact with him, I think Steven Fletcher would have scored. It was on his left foot, on his best side. It [the red card] is a bit harsh, but those are the rules and we’ve taken full advantage of that today. We had a harsh decision go against us last week, this week it went for us. I thought it was a penalty. The fortunate thing is the sending off”.

Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic and Everton veteran Gareth Barry were both given their marching orders for two bookable offences but also fulfil their obligations in midweek cup matches. Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is unconcerned over Barry’s midweek absence for a home clash with Norwich, claiming “he was going to be rested anyway”.

Sadio Mane was sent off in a farcical turn of events at Anfield, entering the referee’s notebook twice in stoppage time after bagging an equaliser in the 85th minute. Much to the relief of his 9% ownership, the Senegal international serves his time when Saints play host to Aston Villa in the League Cup, returning for a tasty home fixture against the Cherries.

Elsewhere on the Tightrope, Jonjo Shelvey edged one step closer to a brief spell on the sidelines, earning his fourth yellow of the season. Ciaran Clark, Eliaquim MangalaMatteo Darmian, Oriol Romeu, Billy Jones, Dele AlliMark Noble, Erik Lamela and Claudio Yacob make up the numbers in a ten-strong band of miscreants.

Dwight Gayle completed his one-match ban and returns to Crystal Palace’s squad for their home encounter against Manchester United next Gameweek. With Connor Wickham still uncertain to recover in time from a calf complaint, the 5.1-priced marksman is likely to lead the line ahead of Fraizer Campbell and Patrick Bamford.

As always, mainly thanks to our resident Tightrope expert Anorak, who has been keeping us up-to-date via his twitter stream.

Anyone else got a club that particularly trolls them? For me its Villa; aways end up with 2 of them and never get points (bench rare cleanies and 0 point hauls when I play them) and to compound it they always nick goals when I have an opposing defender.

"Ryan has already given advice to him but the player is responsible for his own deeds," Van Gaal told reporters. "You have to give respect to your team philosophy.

"We have seen that some players cannot adapt to the team philosophy. You cannot know in advance before you buy them. You have to wait and see. That happened with Angel Di Maria and Falcao."

    Depay to Chelsea/PSG it is.

Aye, when it should have been all about Martial 😉

Still, I'd willingly give the pair of them until next season to really judge it. A big move for the pair of them, so it might just take some time?

i'm def willing to give Firmino time. He hasn't had a chance and in glimpses, he looks more threatening than Milner/lallana and even Coutinho at times. I dont think Depay is cut out for the EPL. He wants time and space. He wont get either in this league

And he has been known to take time to settle. I agree on Depay, though doing what be did in the Eredivisie really suggests top me there's more there. I just don't think his brain is working towards the same goal as the team, his passes are late, he's constantly focused on taking men on instead of simple moves and he blasts the ball in hope more than expectation. That said, I think a spell on the sidelines might help. Strikes me as a player who needs someone kicking his arse, not giving him the benefit of the doubt.

It's possible. I reckon he's one for after LVG, though I hope he improves before then as I have been disappointed. At the moment I can take solace in seeing Herrera start, but that fat git Roobey has somehow gotten back into the striker position.

I'd actually prefer Depay on the left, Martial up top and Rooney benched than what they have now. That's how bad Wayne is.

What about Depay on the right wing and Mata in the hole with Young on the left and Martial upfront? Depay as a conventional winger. I've seen him put in some deadly crosses for the national side.

Can't really judge atm. A team will always struggle when it lacks pace and that's a big issue in our side. We were ok yesterday. Saints are a good side. We look poor in the final third. No runners. Movement from Origi has been terrible and there's no confidence. My biggest concern is Coutinho. He doesn't look happy. Whether his head has been turned by talk of barce or whether he wanted Rodgers to stay, he doesn't look right. His whole demeanour looks off.

That's fair, and valid points. Regarding Coutinho, yeah any number of things could contribute there. I remember hearing that a big component of Michu's decline at Swansea was because he had such a great relationship with Laudrup. That kind of thing can really impact.

Very possible, though after Rooney's performance there's a lot of pressure to play Martial up top.

Tbh, I might buy him anyways, he looks well able to nab a few points regardless of position.

2FTs £5, ITB and happy to take a -4 this week.

    Martial out for Lukaku?
    Darmian out for Bellerin?
    Gomez out for Bertrand?

    Butland / Schmeichel
    Kolorov / Darmian / Richards / Gomez / Martin
    KDB / Ozil / Payet / Ayew / Mahrez
    Vardy / Pelle / Martial

    Thanks 🙂

          Dawson > Jones imo

You will say Jones is not nailed , no goal threat , injury prone

      Please don't bench Mahrez.

To get him in you'd need to take a couple of hits, maybe more. You have Pelle coverage so should be fine

Who would you bench over mahrez?

        I was thinking:

        A) Ighalo>Lukaku (bench mahrez)
        or
        B) Mahrez>Mane (bench Ighalo)

I intend to bench Mahrez so I can play Mane (midfield the same except for Mane/Wijnaldum).

I will also be playing Ighalo as not convinced by West Ham, they only seem to play well against good sides...

Whilst Leicester have been scoring at will, I feel that they may struggle this GW. GW 14 is when the real test begins.

And the only Watford/West Ham asset I have is Ighalo so not too fussed if Watford lose, just as long as he scores!
