The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 27 – The Defence

With so many teams facing blanks in Gameweek 27 and 30, we’re placing a real emphasis on the next four rounds of fixtures for our updated Watchlist rankings. Three home fixtures in four sees Leicester pair Kasper Schmeichel and Christian Fuchs keep their places towards the top of the Watchlist, whilst Southampton duo Fraser Forster and Virgil van Dijk also remain among the leading options at the back after racking up six straight clean sheets.

GOALKEEPERS

Southampton’s in-form Fraser Forster keeps his spot as the top-rated goalkeeper, having racked up a sixth straight clean sheet in the 1-0 win at Swansea last time out. The upcoming schedule (CHE, bou, SUN, sto, LIV, lei) is fairly reasonable for Ronald Koeman’s side, particularly in the short term after Saturday’s tough match-up against Chelsea. The 5.0-priced England international should see his 3% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) continue to grow, then, although he has failed to pick up any save points in five of his last six appearances.

Stoke’s Jack Butland has, by comparison, been struggling for shut-outs of late, managing just one from his last eight appearances. He clings on to second spot with plum home fixtures against Aston Villa and Newcastle on the horizon, though, while the rest of the Potters’ fixture list over the coming period (che, SOT, wat, SWA) is fairly favourable, with four of their next six at the Britannia. The 5.2-valued keeper’s prospects would be further boosted if Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross is fit to start against Villa on Saturday, with the centre-half set to resume full training this week following a back problem.

Kasper Schmeichel is our third non-mover at the top of our ladder, with a very favourable fixture list (NOR, WBA, wat, NEW, cpl, SOT) making the Leicester stopper a strong option between the sticks. The Danish international has seen his price rise to 4.6 in FPL, but that still looks outstanding value given Claudio Ranieri’s men have kept clean sheets in five of their last eight. Fantasy managers may prefer to use one of their three Leicester slots on a defender with attacking potential, though, with Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy likely to occupy the other two spots in our 15-man rosters.

Bournemouth’s nice run of fixtures over the next four Gameweeks (wat, SOT, new, SWA) ensures that Artur Boruc keeps his place towards the top of the Watchlist. The Cherries have failed to register a shut-out in their last four though, so while the former Celtic goalkeeper still offers solid value at 4.5 in FPL, there do look to be more appealing options for us to ponder over in goal.

Although Swansea face tough trips to Spurs and Arsenal over the next two Gameweeks, their subsequent schedule (NOR, bou, AVL) helps Lukasz Fabianski climb a few spots on the Watchlist. The 4.7-rated keeper has conceded exactly one goal in each of his last four outings, but clean sheets registered in home matches against West Ham, West Brom and Watford over the past few months offer genuine hope of defensive returns against the Canaries and Villa.

Arsenal’s Petr Cech stays in our thoughts despite the possibility of the Gunners most favourable fixture in the next six – the home clash against West Brom in Gameweek 30 – being rearranged should they progress past Hull in their FA Cup Fifth Round replay. Tough trips to Man United and Tottenham sandwich a favourable home clash against Swansea over the next fortnight, so the 5.9-rated Czech Republic international could struggle to deliver great value in the short-term if that Gameweek 30 blank comes into play.

With a pretty tough trip to Southampton on Saturday and a blank in Gameweek 30, Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois slides down our ladder. The Blues do have favourable match-ups at Norwich and at home to Stoke in between, but with the Belgian setting us back 5.2 in FPL, there is little doubt cheaper options such as Forster and Schmeichel currently look better investments. The champions have also failed to register clean sheets in recent favourable home clashes against West Brom and Newcastle.

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (5.2) falls a little due to concerns over a minor shoulder problem. Should he recover, the Frenchman faces a weekend home encounter with Swansea and showdowns with Aston Villa and Bournemouth in the next five, though tough matches against West Ham and Arsenal could limit his potential.

DEFENDERS

Having averaged 6.1 points per appearance over the last eight Gameweeks, Christian Fuchs keeps his place at the summit ahead of Leicester’s aforementioned favourable fixtures. The Austrian left-back is still available at just 4.8 in FPL, and leads all defenders for chances created (six) over the last four Gameweeks. With a realistic chance of gaining Fantasy points at either end of the pitch, having registered three assists and picked up 12 bonus points so far this season, the former Schalke defender looks to have plenty of upside over the coming weeks, as does his team-mate Robert Huth, who has scored three goals over the last six Gameweeks.

Virgil van Dijk is another who has emerged as something of a bonus point magnet, picking up seven extra points from Southampton’s recent run of six successive shut-outs. The Dutch international, available at 5.5 in FPL, stays in second spot, then, with the fixture list (CHE, bou, SUN, sto, LIV, lei) fairly positive over the coming weeks.

Tottenham’s weekend FA Cup exit helps Toby Alderweireld (6.3) climb back up a few positions, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men one of the sides who face no blanks over the next six Gameweeks (SWA, whm, ARS, avl, BOU, liv). The 6.3-rated centre-back, who leads all defenders in FPL this season with 116 points and sits in over 42% of teams, continues to look a reliable source of Fantasy points, although Spurs have managed just two shut-outs over the last eight Gameweeks.

A non-mover in our latest refresh is Bournemouth’s Charlie Daniels. Despite missing a penalty in the Cherries’ 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Everton on Saturday, the left-back looks set to remain on spot-kick duties, judging by his manager’s post-match comments, and carries reasonable attacking potential, having registered 16 crosses and created four chances over the last four Gameweeks. The fixture list (wat, SOT, new, SWA) is pretty favourable in the short term, so the 4.7-priced defender should still prove to be one of the strongest budget options currently available to us.

The major mover among the defenders this week is Stoke’s Philipp Wollscheid, with the two plum home fixtures against Aston Villa and Newcastle over the next two Gameweeks firmly in mind. The German centre-back only costs 4.5 in FPL and has picked up a reasonable seven bonus points so far this season, although he has yet to register any attacking returns. With an ownership of only 3%, the former Bayer Leverkusen defender could be worth a roll of the dice as a short-term differential – particularly if Ryan Shawcross recovers from injury in time to boost his clean sheet potential

Swansea’s Ashley Williams is also on the rise with the Welsh side facing three favourable fixtures (NOR, bou, AVL) between Gameweeks 29 and 31. The Wales skipper has also been a real threat from set-pieces of late, registering six shots from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, the joint-highest among defenders along with Everton duo Seamus Coleman and Ramiro Funes Mori. Setting us back 4.8 in FPL, the centre-back looks ripe for investment once the difficult trips to Tottenham and Arsenal are done and dusted.

Having earned a recall against Swansea in Gameweek 26, Southampton’s Matt Targett zooms up our rankings this week due to his bargain price tag of 3.9 in FPL. The England U21 international has started four of the Saints’ last six matches, and has picked up two assists and five bonus points in the process. Playing at left wing-back, Targett has plenty of attacking potential, but his place in the starting XI is not totally assured due to Maya Yoshida being a viable option as a starter in central defence, with Ryan Bertrand then switching to left wing-back.

Having failed to earn any attacking points since Gameweek 9, and with three tough away matches in the next five (mun, SWA, tot, WBA, eve), Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin continues to hold limited appeal. There is also the possibility of the West Brom match being rearranged as already mentioned, and with the right-back coming in at a significant cost of 6.1 in FPL, there will likely be a temptation among many of the Spaniard’s 20% ownership to make a change in the near future.

One premium defender who does drop a couple of places on the Watchlist is Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, who faces a blank in Gameweek 30 following the Blues’ 5-1 win against Man City to progress in the FA Cup. The upcoming fixture list (sot, nor, STO, blank, WHM, avl) looks decidedly mixed now, and with the Serbian setting us back 6.6 in FPL, some of his 8% ownership may think that money could be better spent elsewhere, although he has registered five shots from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, highlighting his goal threat.

*Please be aware that our Watchlist Forwards tab is currently broken (there should be no Wayne Rooney) and will be amended as soon as possible.

Yes if DGW happens, triple City would allow us to field a full 11 in GW30, and 11 DGW'ers in GW34, without taking hit's or using WC.

Also worth keeping an eye on Newcastle form, a 3 player City/Newcastle combo would work as well.

Over the last couple of seasons big hitters like Hazard Sanchez Silva Mata were mids you could count on regularly

This year they are very inconsistent. Any particular reason behind it ?

      Mata - man Utd form
Silva - same plus kdb plus injuries
Sanchez - stats are just as good just not scoring
      Hazard - no idea. Mourinho?

Although there are still big hitters we can rely on - they're just different ones

Ok, not so awful after all, didn't notice that ManU has their EL 2nd leg already this Thursday. Probably going to field their best 11, so that levels it a lot. Good chances to win at Manchester. The other one's lost though. Everton is not a very strong side, but Arsenal will chase a two goal lead at Camp Noun Wednesday night and then play again away the Saturday afternoon, and Martinez somehow has a history of setting his team up well against Wenger's Arsenal.

I thought he was absolutely wasteful in all honesty. Provided absolutely nothing. He is bang out of form and it seems he doesnt know how to deal with it. Longest injury stretch he had in his career and needs to recover still.

Cheers, yeah think you're right about the injury things, he doesn't look at all up to speed and match fit. His touch is just not there really is it. If I do get rid of him, it means I can bring Vardy in for Ighalo ..

Are there any standout midfield options at the moment? Can't get Erikson as already have triple Spurs 🙁

    Out: Firmino + Aguero

    Butland
    Bellerin / Dier / Huth / Ivanovic
    Alli / Antonio / Mahrez / Ozil
    Kane / Ighalo

    (Firmino / VVD / Aguero / Hennessey)

    Ighalo to Aguero next GW.

    Butland (AVL)
Dier (SWA) Smith (wat) Ward (wba)
Alli (SWA) Sanchez (mun) Marhez (NOR) Payet (SUN)
    Kane (SWA) Giroud (mun)

Hennessey (wba) Simpson Barkley Agüero Moreno

So currently 10 playing. Got 2 freebies and 0,1 in the bank.

    B) Sanchez, Ighalo and Rose -> Erikson. Vardy, VVD (-4)
    C) Other

What do you reckon people? B would allow me to have triple Spurs attack st the expense of Rose.

That Arsenal defence line was fine. Per fas faulty to both goals, yes, but you know, it's pretty cruel for the defences to be criticised after a match against Messi-Suarez-Neymar. They can absolutely brilliantly deny them an attack after another and then, but being tried repeatedly by such an attacking force for 90 minutes if they eventually fail to hold them back at some point, they will be remembered for that one mistake because it lead to an inevitable goal.

I disagree, both of those goals could have been easily avoided.

I see your point, and Barca have one of the best (if not THE best) attacking trios of all time, but Arsenal played really well and denied them the amount of chances that Barca are normally accustomed to.

The first goal, Monreal / Mertesacker both ignored the most dangerous player in the game in Messi, Monreal should have backed Cech in the 1 on 1 and denied the simple pass across the goal (although it WAS a great touch and finish from Lionel).

The second goal Flamini just lost his head when he saw Messi coming in from behind.

Of course they could have been easily avoided, I didn't say that.

First: Bellerin should have brought Neymar down when he was turning, and that attack would have ended there, deep in Barcelona's half, so possibly not even a warning. And Per should have started running back to defence when Neymar received the ball, instead of waiting there.

Second: Per should have either controlled the ball or hit it off the pitch, but certainly not drop it for Messi deep in his own penalty area.

But the point is that these two errors make people forget all the times when Monreal, Kos, Bellerin and even Mertesacker and Coquelin managed to win the situation against Suarez Messi and Neymar and those are tough situations, there could have been more goals were the defenders not as good as they were. Yes, they were naive in the end (hack the foot, hit the ball to row Z!), but for most of the game they were doing admirably well.

                Yup, completely agreed.

I was very impressed by Arsenal as a whole last night, especially Welbeck and Bellerin, but yes Bellerin should have run into Neymar's back leg in Barca's half.

The main issue I had with the defence last night was Mertesacker, I don't rate him as a top deffender at all, decent in the PL against less skillful strikers, but against the top level players he can't cope, it's not just that he's slow, it's more that he's not agile enough and struggles to re-position his feet.

Although if I had been Monreal in that first goal, no way would I have let the ball get to Messi so easily, he was caught ball-watching and left Cech stranded.

Bellerin really should have been more cynical in that, but other than that moment, he was probably the best player on pitch last night. Wonderful game.

I don't rate Per much either, but to be fair, he did very fine until he forgot himself to Barcelona's half where he should never have been, and then wtf was that for the 2nd goal! Even I wouldn't fail like that!

Don't know, but he sure should not have been trying to pass to anybody. I mean, me, the Rangers back guard, and all of the amateur football defenders would have known perfectly well what to do: kick the ball as hard as you can to get it out of there!

And then, the really good defenders would have just controlled it neatly and passed it accurately to Özil far from the box.

Whereas Mertesacker... what he effectively did pass is, I hope, his starting place to Gabriel.

I dunno.. No matter how good a defender / midfielder you are, you don't try to 1st-time pass to your other CB in the 6 yard box with Messi, Neymar and Suarez lurking around.. I genuinely think he was trying to control the ball in order to then hoof it but his touch was just terrible, can't picture him actually wanting to pass the ball like that...

Sure, of course you'd never make a pass like that. I was here assuming that it wasn't a pass but a failed effort to control the ball and he just effectively did pass it to Messi.

So, just saying that he thought he can control a ball like that, which he obviously can't, but many other defenders like Silva or Hummels or Varane or Kompany would probably have pulled that move easily (thinks he's better than he is).

Sergio Ramos would have tried to backflip and clear the ball with his left heel, and would have still been more successful than Per.

Varane would have done the sensible thing 😎

Varane would have definitely controlled it smoothly and passed it to Özil. He's incredibly fine with the ball and if he has a weakness it's exactly that he always tries to play the ball well instead of playing it safe.

The way I remember it is that Ronaldinho, Henry and Messi just missed a fair few very fine chances, and Rangers produced no attack whatsoever. This time Suarez effectively missed two chances, but other than that they got nothing before 70 minutes, while Arsenal actually had several excellent chances from which they should have scored a couple. (that latter point just says that Hutton-Weir-Cuellar-Papac didn't do that much work, it was the whole bus standing in front of their goal, and while Arsenal too gave the possession to Barcelona, their tactic wasn't half as negative, they actually kept on attacking, which taxes the defenders much more and exposes them to attacks more).

Rangers did have a few attacks and I wouldnt say they parked the bus more than Arsenal. Most of the time when Barca had the ball last night Arsenal had 11 bodies behind the ball. If they defended like Rangers did they would still be in the tie.

                Heres the match report.

Looking at the teams, Arsenal are a lot closer to todays barca than Rangers team were to Barca 07.

That last one's right, of course. Meanwhile, Rangers, did they even get the ball to Barcelona's box? I recall they got a couple of desperate shots. Arsenal produced maybe more clear scoring chances than Barcelona last night. There's a great difference between defending with 11 and then still keeping all back when you win the possession, and defending with 11 and then going to attack when you win the possession.

Rangers did attack but not in numbers as they knew it would leave them exposed at the back. If Arsenal adopted this tactic they wouldnt have lost the first goal. Few Rangers incidents from the article.

Cousin sent a tantalising ball across the face of the goal but the sprawling Barry Ferguson could not connect.

Cousin himself then spurned Rangers best chance as he scooped a first-time effort wide from a Ferguson cross as the clock ticked down.

While the chances were limited it wasnt as if they just shut up shop like Inter against Barca. Its not pretty but it is effective. Essentially what im trying to say is that if Arsenal played more like Rangers/Celtic/Inter then they would still be in the tie.

There were other ways not to concede the first goal: Per return to own half when they lost the possession, Bellerin bring Neymar down.

Arsenal also might just want to not just win a point (meaningless at this stage), but to advance. While 0-0 could have been acceptable, sure you'd prefer to go to Camp Nou with an actual advantage? Going to Camp Nou with a draw is pretty much the tie lost. I think it's absolutely correct that they tried to score, and it almost went well. Had Ox not missed that perfect chance in the beginning...

Ramsey was hardly a match to Carlton Palmer.

What has happened to the Welsh Messi recently? Looks a shadow at best of his former self and he's still young..

There was a lot of fluke in that always. He just scored some absolutely ridiculous goals that if he tried 100 times he would hardly put in more than once.

Btw, not saying he isn't a good player, just that he never was a Messi, come on.

He's often a bit mindless and that showed last night. He could still have been a hero had he bagged one of those great chances he got, but what I'm more critical of is his inability to recuperate the ball and bring it up (last night). He seemed to lose it so easily.

Haha yeah I never really considered him a Messi 😉

Agreed, he never controlled the game, looked a bit out of his depth last night tbh.
