Captain Sensible – Gameweek 36

Next up this Friday, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article and analyse the captaincy conundrum ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. As usual, we delve into the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez leads the pack by some distance in the Gameweek 36 Captain Poll.

At home to a Norwich side with a single clean sheet on their travels all season, the Chilean has earned over 45% of the votes cast so far. Despite failing to get amongst the points in Sunday’s goalless draw at Sunderland, Sanchez has scored or assisted in seven of his last eight outings and has earned 39 points in his previous three at the Emirates.

Sergio Aguero is some way behind in second spot. Although he got amongst the goals at home to Stoke last week, the Argentine’s 69th-minute withdrawal against the Potters prior to last Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg with Real Madrid has persuaded just 11% to hand him the armband for a trip to St Mary’s, bearing in mind the return leg in Spain is three days later.

Romelu Lukaku (8%) takes third spot for Everton’s home match against Bournemouth. Granted, the Belgian has no form to speak of – having drawn blanks in each of his last five in the league – but a total of seven efforts in last week’s cup loss to United at least suggests his threat is on the rise.

Daniel Sturridge is backed by only 4% due to concerns over Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet for Liverpool’s trip to Swansea. The England international was an unused sub in the first leg in Spain last night, though, which perhaps bodes well for his domestic minutes as he looks to continue a fine recent record of five goals and two assists in six league outings.

Despite scoring eight times in the last seven, Harry Kane earns just 2% of votes for Tottenham’s trip to Chelsea. The Blues have just one clean sheet in ten – against Villa – though if Leicester clinch the league at Old Trafford the day before, there would be major question marks over Spurs’ morale at the Bridge.

Elsewhere, West Ham duo Dimitri Payet and Andy Carroll could be overlooked options for the trip to West Brom. Payet has four double-figure hauls on his travels already – including two in his last four – whilst Carroll’s aerial threat could thrive from the Frenchman’s delivery against the Baggies as he seeks to extend his run of six goals in the last five league matches.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics, though?

We begin by breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches in order to shed a little more light on the situation.

-4 next GW to field 7 DGW players or -8 to field one more?

What I am thinking so far

    de Gea
    PvA, Bellerin, Simpson
    Payet, Fabregas, Lanzini, Sanchez
    Aguero, Kane, Martial

    Darlow, Mahrez, Delaney, Gabriel

Remember in 34 a lot of the DGW players got chased and failed whereas the tried and tested SGW players (e.g. Kane and Alli) starred. I took a hit for Martial over Kane and cost me a lot.

Ha I'm still mulling over whether to bring in a DGWer this week to enhance my bench but for a -4.

Just don't know really buddy. Really want to adopt a watch and wait brief this week but kind of got an itchy trigger finger at this time of the week!

I was thinking that but if you can field 11 this week leave it (I was considering a -8 this week and a -8 next GW!!)
I will be waiting to see what Fabregas does, if Lanzini plays.
I am looking at Martial > Defoe next week though...

Here's my 12 players (without backup GK, Coutinho and Alli)

            Darlow
Bellerin Toby PvA Morgan (Gabs on bench)
            Lanzini Sanchez Townsend
            Kun Kaku Kane

Do you reckon I'll get an 11 out of that, Borussia? Guess the only worry would be Lanzini? I did Sakho out for PvA before the Alli news came through - very stupid!

Kaku is going to bite you in the bottom I think...
You are lacking a little on DGW players, I know not to go crazy but...
              Just a few thoughts
              Toby > Smalling
              Alli > Milner
              Coutinho > Fabs
              Kaku > Defo

If you can only do one or 2 I would do Alli and Coutinho benching Townsend and Morgan

For this GW though looks good, I think Lanzini is playing personally and actually want him this GW 🙁

                  Cheers for all those!

                  My current thinking is actually:

                  Alli - Payet
                  Gabs - Kaboul

                  Giving me:
                  Robles*
                  Kaboul* PvA* Toby
                  Payet(TC)* Cout(who knows!)* Lanzini* Townsend(Villa)
                  Lukaku* Kane Aguero

Could even remove Aguero this week for Deeney to give me 8 DGWers plus Kane, Toby and Townsend playing Villa... so many permutations lol.

I reckon I'm doubling up on Sunderland defense next week.

                    Garbiel/Sakho->Pvs/Kirchof

Think I'll take the gamble on Deeney - gives me more DGWers next week plus there could be a haul. Worth the -4 on both counts.

                      Sigh.. going Kunless. Very scary

Studge should start - I'd say 60ish given he might be being preserved for Villareal.

Borini takes pens and is a bit more creative than Defoe. However his placing on the wing is causing some a bit of doubt for sure.
Could be a good punt, though - I'm happy with PvA and perhaps doubling up on Sunderland's defence on the DGW here.

A couple of doubts for this week's transfers.. any help?

    1. Sakho -> Smalling or PvA? (doubling up either way)
    2. KDB -> Payet this week or next? (smalling only affordable if I do it)

I'd prefer Smalling to PVA but not sure it's worth a hit. So would leave KDB > Payet next week assuming you have some bench coverage.

So no transfers? I was just thinking of that option. Defense would be ok (bellerin fuchs gabriel, kaboul as backup).
Doubts elsewhere are KDB, Aguero, Firmino

Could do kdb->payet for free, but 2 FTs next week might be tasty (and would have fingers crossed he plays!)
Defending a lead, and nobody else has him, not sure that matters either way..
