Euro 2016

Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Germany

Our Group C coverage gets underway with a look at World Champions Germany this afternoon. Joachim Lowe’s men open their Euro 2016 campaign against Ukraine on Sunday, June 12 at 8pm, before taking on Poland four days later at 8pm and going up against Northern Ireland on Tuesday, June 21 at 5pm.

If, as the bookies predict, Germany finish at the Group C summit, they would face the third-placed team in either Group A, B or F in the Last 16, which should help ensure a safe passage into the quarter-finals at least.

The Road to Qualification

Germany clinched their place in this month’s tournament by finishing top of qualifying Group D, just one point ahead of Poland. Lowe’s men won seven and lost two of their ten matches, with both the Poles and Republic of Ireland clinching victories on home turf.

Although they scored 24 times, it’s worth noting that 11 of those arrived against whipping boys Gibraltar – indeed, Poland scored on 33 occasions by comparison. Lowe’s men conceded nine times, though were far from resilient and managed just three clean sheets, with two of those arriving against Gibraltar.

Over the last 12 months, Germany have lost four of their five friendlies, conceding at least twice against USA, France, England and Slovakia (in a 3-1 defeat last Sunday), though they managed to chalk up a 4-1 win over Italy back in March.

Most Appearances Jerome Boateng (10), Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos, Mario Goetze, Thomas Muller (9), Mats Hummels, Andre Schurrle, Jonas Hector, Lukas Podolski , Karim Bellarabi (7), Mesut Ozil (6)

Most goals Thomas Muller (9), Andre Schurrle, Max Kruse, Mario Gotze (3), Ilkay Gundogan (2)

Most assists Mesut Ozil (4), Max Kruse (3), Jonas Hector (2)

The Key Targets

Bearing in mind that Germany fired more attempts on goal than any side over qualifying, their attack will likely be the focal point for Fantasy managers.

Top scorer in qualifying with nine goals, Thomas Muller currently sits in over 34% of teams in the Uefa game after netting 20 times for Bayern Munich in 2015/16. Priced at 10.5 in the Uefa game, he’s the costliest option in the German squad and is expected to lead the line in a 4-2-3-1. Muller – who is also likely to retain spot-kick duties – could also be shifted to the right should Lowe utilise a “false nine” system.

Mesut Ozil (24% ownership) produced more assists than any team-mate over qualification, despite featuring in only six matches. A little kinder on the budget than Muller at 8.5 in Uefa, the Arsenal man is also cheaper than fellow attacking midfielder Mario Gotze , who will set you back 9.0. Having notched three times in qualifying, Gotze is the likeliest candidate to operate as a “false nine” if Muller is shifted onto the wing, though he has struggled domestically and scored just three times in 11 starts for Bayern. Marco Reus, meanwhile, is out of the picture after being omitted from the final 23 earlier today due to injury concerns.

Toni Kroos sets you back just 7.0 in the Uefa game by comparison. Set to be stationed in the double-pivot, his all-round displays may be best suited to the Draft Kings offering. Kroos bagged ten assists for Real Madrid in La Liga last season and his delivery will ensure he’s afforded a fair share of dead-ball duties.

With some uncertainty still surrounding the fitness of Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng offers a safe route into the Germany defence. Priced at 6.0 in the Uefa offering, the former City man is the most popular defender in the game and sits in over 29% of teams – he fired ten attempts over the qualifiers, though all but two arrived from distance.

Priced at 5.5 in Uefa, left-back Jonas Hector provides us with an all-round alternative. The Cologne defender produced four assists in the Bundesliga last term and supplied a couple of assists over the qualifiers, whilst his defensive actions are also favoured by the Draft Kings scoring metric, which rewards successful tackles and interceptions.

The Long Shots

Included in the final 23 earlier today, Mats Hummels certainly has the stats on his side. Owned by over 22% of Uefa managers, the new Bayern centre-half boasts a far greater threat in and around the box than any backline option for Lowe’s side and was the standout defensive performer for successful tackles and interceptions, boosting his potential in the Draft Kings game. Hummels has indicated that he expects to miss the first group match against Ukraine but Lowe has since claimed the player “will be fit for Euro 2016”. At a price of 6.5, though, he looks a little risky until we get a clearer picture towards the end of next week.

With Ilkay Gundogan sidelined through injury, Sami Khedira is favourite to partner Kroos in the centre of the park. Likely to be one to watch for the Draft Kings game due to tackles and interceptions, the Juventus midfielder enjoyed a rare productive season and bagged five goals and four assists in 20 Serie A appearances.

Available for 8.0 in Uefa, Mario Gomez offers Lowe the option of a genuine centre forward up front. It’s debatable whether he can break into the starting XI, though it’s worth noting that Gomez has started three of Germany’s last four friendlies and netted from the spot in the weekend loss to Slovakia. A tally of 26 goals and six assists in 33 league appearances for Besiktas this season highlights his current form.

Reus’ absence could afford Julian Draxler the chance to stake a claim for a starting berth. If Muller is fielded up front, though, the Wolfsburg wide man – who has been named in the first XI in three of the last four friendlies – could have the chance to play his way into our plans at a price of just 6.5 in Uefa.

Ozil and Muller are the only ones I'm considering, dunno if Reus is worth it

Might be a good plan to start with Reus and swap to KDB in round 2 when the fixtures swing

How essential is it to have premium forwards at the early stages? Mueller and Ronaldo usually step it up in the latter stages.

    Patricio Kozacik

    Juanfran Mangala Schar Giaccherini Guerreiro

    KDB Gotze Ozil Hamsik Grosicki

    Shaqiri Harnik Giroud

    Nothing in the bank.

Hungary are awful, Iceland and Austria could keep goals to a minimum imo. Portugal have always been modest scorers at best

Probably just about yes, despite Matiuidi being the better player by a long way, think Grosicki offers a bit more goal/assist potential due to him playing higher up the field.

Would rather stump the money for Payet over Matuidi.

A key consideration for Fantasy managers when it comes to international tournaments is: regardless of qualifying performance, or pre-tourney friendly form - which teams will actually Turn Up when it comes to the tournament itself?

My impressions are, for example, that lately Spain know how to Turn Up, even if it takes them a game to get into it. Germany are flaky in friendlies and have been leaky in qualifying at the back, but have the mentality to get in the zone and Turn Up once the competitive matches kick off.

In contrast, England have a handsome recent history of storming through qualifying, showing promise in tricky friendlies, and then completely failing to Turn Up and perform on the day. Russia have a habit of quietly slumping to ignominious exits despite showing early promise, and Portugal only Turn Up if a certain Real Madrid galactico chooses to a Turn Up himself.

So - which teams have the mental strength, the attitude, the focus and the determination to rise to the occasion and actually Turn Up to perform at Euro 2016? And who should we avoid, despite their promising signs, because they're just going to wilt when the important games kick in?

Have now put 50 on Janko top 4 goalscorer e/w, some at 75, and some at 68.

        I'll do that.
We were horrible last night, some of our starters and subs in is not even in our squad. He got the best grade of our players(not the top grade as we were poor) along with 3 others.
        Isaksson one of the three.
Hiljemark(palermo, good season) played 2nd half and was also one of the three.
But the 3rd and the point as he now is gaining momentum on here is... Emil Forsberg at 5.5 in mid. He was the only one last night (played 1st half) that actually offered something.
Creative, have drive, an ability to break the stale mate we always find us in. Can only be better when he has Ibra to pass, get a pass from in one of his many runs and do 1-2's with.

Yep indeed! Cheap enabler in mid that actually can get something realisticly but so cheap he will let you feel good leaving out.
I'm hoping to play 5-2-3 or 5-3-2 if all forwards deliver so for me he fits in quite nicelly.

    I know Ronaldo is expensive.

But with Ronaldo you get the focal point of the teams attack, the free kick taker and the penalty taker and he is pretty good at all of those

If all the other captain choices have failed until the last match I can think of a lot worse player to throw all of your faith into.

There's no such thing as "would of", Danny. Try "would've". It's short for "would have".

And while I am on my soap box there are no such things as these either:

    could of
    should of
    must of

I contemplate a lot of things,
Like why the sky's a shade of green,
And how it is that lions fly
While birds with wings refuse to try.

It's strange how snowmen never melt,
And sweaty feet are sweetly smelt,
And how so commonly we see
Young hippos nesting in a tree.

I wonder how they get up there,
And why the world is mostly square,
And how huge every nose would be
If we had only one, not three.

I cannot guess why hills are flat,
Nor can I say why twigs are fat.
I do not know how mud keeps clean,
Or why small kittens act so mean.

And while I'm thinking all this stuff,
          Consider black marshmallow fluff,
And how the rainbows twist and coil
Around the clouds down to the soil

Imagine if our teeth were white
I'd want to keep them out of site!
It's crazy stuff I see in dreams,
          To contemplate so many things.

As my daughter once famously said
        "Oui, j'ai douze ans".
It was her standard answer to any question in French.

As for moi, I am having a quiet summer. I know very little of English football let alone European. So I ain't doin ote.

    Pick one combination:
    A) Shaqiri+Vrsaljko
    B) Janko+5.0 defender(pick a defender too)

B and as there are quite a few it's impossible to pick one when we don't know which you have and if there is a special day that should be prio

          Sure go for it.
For me Dier is a no go, him being oop actually makes him less interesting and that took some doing.
But paired with Janko, sure go with your gut.

No idea but if you did want B you could have Dragovic or Glik.

I'm thinking of tripling up on Dragovic, Junuzovic, Janko. Good call?

What stage are people expecting to use their wildcards in the euro game? After GW2?

GW3, more teams will believe they are safe after two games with some 3rd place teams going through, expect annoying rotation.

Janko confuses me, can find barely anything on him online, must be looking in the wrong places.

Prolific in qualifying, no penalties, good season for FC Sydney and started off well at Basel.. Is he the real deal?

Hmm.. Harnik has 14 in a similar amount, but much more at club level, for a top club...

I'll stew over them for a while 🙂 cheers for the insight!

Sydney didn't renew his contract as he had too many European commitments. Would they have done that if he was awesome?

I am still going with him

A bit of an old time center tank.
Really really good at what he does, score. Not much to offer other than that, if nothing....

Tripling up on Austria a good move? Janko, Junuzovic, Dragovic.

Already have the first two, considering Dragovic, Mangala, Dier, Giaccherini, etc for the last slot.

Nothing wrong with Dragovic/ Klein though, good shouts, especially in the groups..
