The Numbers Game – 2015/16 Review – Everton

Our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, continues this evening with an assessment of Everton.

To get underway, we cast an eye over the Toffees’ team data, comparing them to the rest of the top-flight, before analysing their first-team squad, key goal threats and creative sources in an attempt to gain insight on their prospects for the season ahead.

The Merseysiders will, of course, have a new man in charge after Ronald Koeman replaced Roberto Martinez in the hotseat. Everton finished in eleventh spot in each of the Spaniard’s final two campaigns at the helm, accruing 47 points on both occasions, though a drop in resilience saw them concede 55 times in 2015/16 – a defensive record only better than the bottom five.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

The last three seasons, they've followed a pattern in the launch to which the FPL is to be open almost exactly one month. I believe that's the timeline they've been trying to follow.

If anything, it will be delayed by one or two days only. I have every confidence that it won't set for next week but this week.

What does "almost" exactly one month mean exactly?

By one month, this means 13 July to 13 August. FPL should open either 13 July on the dot or one or two days before/after.

My theory - because there's a revamp of the PL website (and possibly the game itself), they'd be wise to release it during quiet hours to give maximum chance of the site surviving. If they release during peak hours there's a good chance it'll get swamped?

My guess it ill go live during DZ hours.

    • 10 Years

After my post yesterday where I got flak from every corner I am interested in how fellow posters intend using their budget. My last 2 seasons I have come 5 000th and 962nd so I am not rubbish at the game. Everyone knows there is a level of luck to consider but having the knowledge of this site and putting it into action will vastly improve one's prospects.

    I posted:
Goalkeepers: 9.5 budget max and possible rotation. I was told max 9.
Defenders 6 6 5 and 2 x 4.5 rotation defenders 26 mil; slightly high I admit. Hit from a dizzy height for having premium players and expensive rotations.
Midfield: 9.5 9.5 8.5 6.5 4.5 total 38.5 mil spent with a view to possible rotation of 4.5 and 6.5. Told I was stupid to consider a rotation of 6.5 mid.
Forwards: 7 11.5 and 6 total 24.5 possible rotation of 6 mil with 6.5 mil midfield. Told I was mad not to see potential of 8 to 9 mil options.
Grand total of 98 mil allowing for higher than anticipated pricing of my prized assets.
Well, for all the experts out there who so vehemently disagreed with me, let me know how you intend to use the 100 mil?

      I think i have a fixed budget but i really don't.

      - First and foremost i always need 2 big captains.
      - By nature, i have always preferred captaining forwards over midfielders. I don't know why but i always think they are more reliable and have a higher upside. I am not one to want a fixed point return from my captains but i want a higher point return and forwards are more capable of braces/hat-tricks.
      - I like having 2 big forwards (even if the second one is a reliable name like Kane/Lukaku/Studge) its fine. My third striker too is not always an ultra cheap one. I like my front line.
      - I tend to go for one ultra premium mid. 2 in the 8-10 bracked and 2 cheapies.
      - One big defender for sure and then either another good defender and 3 cheapies who i rotate or 2 sets of rotating cheapies.
      - Never spend more than 9 on my keepers. Last year spent 8.5. Keepers don't have a high upside.
      - I try sticking to this structure and then what happens is i keep trying out permutations and combination. 3 players go out for 3 others and then i see where i like the balance. So there is where the structure gets compromised.
      - I always prefer goalscorers over assisters.(Alli over Eriksen. Alexis over Ozil)

      -

I agree with all you say and I do think the Mahrez Payet Kane Ighalo scenarios will come to light. I got to the stage last year I did not need the 108 mil itb.

Mate anything against the grain gets predictable replies.
I am a sucker for a nice mid price attacking rotation. Sometimes 3 way.
I always go cheap in defence because I can't resist them big hitters (can you seriously resist kun, kdb, hitman, Alexis etc?)

But let's be honest this is meaningless without knowing prices. Certain players will have ridiculous value and your structure will work around them.

Sure, everyone builds around 4 or 5 fixture proof players. As you say when the values come out it is easier to calculate, bit the 2 mil ITB allows a bit of finessing.

What is your rationale for not jumping on the Aguero band wagon at 13.0?

      1. Eze Really?
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

Well, firstly I think Kun won't be 13 this year. I know its against the grain but his injury profile ain't good and it ties up money when he is. I think he might come in at 12 and I have a couple of mil spare to make the move to as high as 13.
It can hurt if you don't have him I agree but I definitely have the flexibility for Ibra, Studge, Kane, (Higuain) options.

You reckon? its a dilemma I and probably others face....do you free up cash to balance the team or do you rely on Aguero to bang the goals in like previous seasons (injury aside). Is it better to balance across the team from a statistical point of view? Will Kane be any better this season...do we ignore his abysmal Euros performance?

          1. Eze Really?
            • 10 Years
            7 years, 11 months ago

I would ignore anything to do with England but Kane more than most needs a rest so he won't be my pick early on. Everyone is scared of Kun and to be quite frank distorts the choices on offer. The game was more fun when he wasn't playing. I got a massive score once with him last year and if I stuck to Mahrez as form and availability suggested, I would have been 80 points better off.

There was always a Kun though... Henry, Ronaldo, RVP... There's normally a 13M player who can hurt you badly if you don't own him, but can allow you a much better squad if you don't. It's a tough call.

I have to agree with you. But I am not going for name over form this year. That is for sure. I will probably own Kun though having said this as will 90% of the posters on this site.

You're right though, it's kind of a lazy choice. Not taking the risk of spending those extra funds more intelligently elsewhere.

I refused to sign him two years ago, as I felt he was too pricey. Granted I had Costa when he had his best season in the Prem, but it didn't work out to be a good year for me. (who knows if that was the reason!?).

This year I'm going for a stronger squad. Last season at the beginning I spent too much on my starting XI and never had any decent subs.

Although I don't have a strict budget plan, I reckon I'll spend more on midfield. Roughly as follows:

      GK - 9.5
      DF - 25.5
      MF - 38.0
      FW - 27.0

I like captaining midfielders because of clean sheet, extra goal points and greater assist potential so by spending £38m I should have at least 3 great options. I think I'll have one premium striker, a mid priced and a budget striker, possibly Aguero, Benteke and Gray.

By about GW6 the strikers sort themselves out so I won't chase the expensive ace on forwards. I agree with your budget.

Yeah, if my memory serves me well most of the big strikers last season didn't start great. It took Kane a while to get going and I think Aguero and Lukaku only scored a couple in the first 6/7 games. A lot of people also started off with Rooney and he was poor the whole season.

I reckon you're minimum of 1M short of that striker trio at 27M

Going with over heavy defence of 3 premiums is downright stupid especially because top teams take time to get clean sheets on regular basis. 6 5 and 3*4.5mn is best defence to start with...That gives you 7.5mn in forward line with 2mn in bank...Midfield you have got spot on

As everyone has said about my defenders but it worked for me last year. Any rotation I got horribly wrong when I tried it and it meant 2 changes were needed to put things right rather than 1. I take your point though.

      Here's a rough thought-process from me.

      - Don't like spending much on keepers. Lower priced keepers often compete for points with premium ones
      - I like a couple of premium/almost premium DF and a cheap three-way rotation for the final space
      - Aguero is the first name on my sheet, so I need to reserve 13M for him. Not convinced yo're right about his price-drop
      - I don't like the 5th MF bench-fodder approach, unless there's a genuine 4.5 viable option with attacking threat. I'd rather a 5th MF / 3rd FW rotation, if possible.
      - Then I try to get at least one premium mid, one upper-mid priced MF, a mid-priced and and a budget smart buy

This is a base structure I try to build around:

      4.5 4.5
      6.0 5.5 4.5 4.5 4.0
      10.0 9.0 7.0 6.5 5.5
      13.0 9.0 6.5

This is all very much flexible depending on individual players values, and finding the best fit, but this will be my starting point.

It'll be those higher cost defenders that will likely get trimmed to allow more investment in midfield this year.

Previous years I worked on this premis and was fine until last year. A 4.5 mid is obvious bench fodder and the auto sub for me went to a defender and it paid off mostly.

Well do be quite honest i do not have a set strategy. It kinda is a "floater" It really depends on prices, but i tend to captain my mids more than forwards. I believe that is true after looking at the last season.

When it comes to value i really do not look at it if it fits within the budget and i am content with my team.
Last season i had partial success with rotating keepers, so i think this season i wont be rotating as much, but even saying that makes me question it.

Tl'DR do what feels right for you 🙂

Is GW 1 all about luck or is there a way of getting a good start? I mean I can't remember the last time I started the season well and my GW1 team makes me cringe when I look back towards the end of the season and normally have to waste my wildcard on GW2.

      GW1 is a weird one.

It feels like you'll playing a wildcard and you expect big returns but unknowns about player/team form; player availability or starting prospects tend to throw curve balls.

You could pick any week at random and if it was a bad one decided to wildcard. I think take the first 3-weeks and trust your judgement. Knee-jerking early isn't good.

Exceptions being you've got players who are injured; out-of-favour; being rested or there's a clear starting alternative not hitherto considered.
