The Numbers Game – 2015/16 Review – Leicester City

Next up in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are champions Leicester City.

To get underway, we cast an eye over the Foxes team statistics and compare them to the rest of Premier League, before delving into the data to assess their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look to gain insight on their prospects for the upcoming campaign.

After earning a mere 19 points in their first 29 matches of 2014/15, Leicester looked set for a return to the Championship before a stunning reversal of fortunes under Nigel Pearson, helped by a switch to 3-5-2, saw them win seven and draw one of their final nine fixtures to finish six points clear of the drop.

The arrival of Claudio Ranieri last summer transformed the King Power club and ushered in their first ever Premier League title. Reverting back to a four-man defence, the Italian’s counter-attacking approach, allied with the pace and trickery of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, tore top-flight backlines apart as Leicester lost just three matches all season and finished ten points clear of second-placed Arsenal.

Very impressive from Froome. Still a long way to go, and a couple of stages still to come that should really suit Quintana, but Froome's looking so strong.

Yep - but as you said last page, was that handful of seconds he gained on Quintana worth the effort with the two tough stages coming up? I guess we'll see.

13 seconds is nothing on Ventoux if he's raken a lot out of himself. I'm sure he'd taken that into account, though.

              • 10 Years
              7 years, 11 months ago

I don't think he took that much out of himself tbh, working with 3 other very competent TTers in the break and they only made one attack and it stuck. Its not like a day of continual mountain attacks that some riders do to take 20 seconds on a stage, those were probably the easiest 12 seconds to make anywhere in the tour.

I guess we'll see. I was sort of expecting him not to even push for victory on Ventoux as his biggest chance to put time into Quintana must be Friday's TT. Quintana has to attack tomorrow.

I don't think that's his style, Wiggo's metronomy of years gone by has tarred the Sky squad as the ultimate dullards but Froome showed even as a domestique that's not him. He'll take time everywhere and give himself the biggest buffer possible going into the final mountain stages.

Who the hell is Laura Massaro - never heard of her probably works in Costa Coffee in her spare time to earn a few bob

She is trying to say that the Olympics should be the pinnacle of every sport and McIlroy comments were unacceptable, I don't think so, any golfer or tennis player would take a major or grand slam well before the side show to them winning an Olympic gold... Both sports shouldn't even be on there anyway

Should football be an Olympic sport in your opinion?

      1. Syd.
        • 15 Years

No it shouldn't, the Olympics should be the pinnacle of any sport which competes in it. Football, golf & tennis can stand on their own feet and they don't need the Olympics. The fact that they decided to let professional boxers compete this year is an utter joke...

        1. The_Colonel

I don't think I agree, I like to see these sport at the games (although football less so). Basketball is an interesting example, the US roll out their billionaires but it also gives air time to some smaller nations.
Given that rugby 7s is in, maybe 5-a-side football or futsal would be more appropriate? Probably not big enough though.
You're right though, the boxing decision is a joke!

      Ha. Just no.
Maybe to say "in my opinion it's the pinnacle is sport" but to just say it is doesn't make it so. It means almost nothing to the top sportsman outside of track and field.

      1. The_Colonel
        • 10 Years

Not necessarily, I think it is the pinnacle for most of the sports involved; swimming, gymnastics, hockey(?), rowing, ....

Great point. But comparing professional sportsman to them is silly. As if McIlroy would consider that his greatest achievement. Even boxers who use it as an in want to become world champ.

But apart from the very smallest sports, aren't many full-time paid professional athletes? Many will also have large sponsorship deals to boot. Surely the Olympics lost its "amateur" status a long time ago?

This, it's just more evident in tennis / football / basketball / golf / boxing as they're more mainstream sports with wide audiences, lots of money, and a wider range of athletes to choose from than, say, the shot put..

If they want them sports in the olympics then thats the way it should be. In reality whoever wins the tennis, golf and football at this olympics will be household names. In my opinion this is not in line with the real appeal of the olympics - seeing amateurs or people who are not well known in different sports having their moment in the sun.

The Olympics without the likes of Bolt wouldn't be a spectacle at all. They need to sell tickets after all.
He has made his fame from this platform and it is the pinnacle of his sport. He wouldn't have become the superstar without it.

Aye I get you. This is what I mean. If they can compete, then they should let the best in every sport compete, They shouldn't be able to pick and choose which sports they allow the best in the world to complete from. All or nothing.

I know where you're coming from but in reality it was their amazing success at the olympics that made them the superstars (and professionals) they are today. Had they, for example only won bronze or silver instead of every gold they would not have the same fame. Compare this to tennis and if any murray was to win or lose it won't affect his status as a top tennis player one bit ( same applies for golf and football). He has made his fame and international recognition from major grand slam tennis competitions (four a year) that get major media coverage . Compare this to athletes in track and field and their main stage is the olympics. they have everything on the line for two weeks every four years. In my opinion it means more to them to win and if they gain popularity of a professional contract ( e.g anthony joshua) after it then so be it.

Exactly!! He's someone who has a knack for picking decent players at the right time, but doesn't even look into the fine detail of how you earn BPS, and probably couldn't tell you the point/penalty for each individual action (which I could ream off easily)

                😆
