The Fantasy Football Scout Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Very few RMT's with one, or both of Vahrez in them; probably due to pricing, second season slumps, and the loss of Kante in midfield.

But what if Mahrez moves (despite Ranieri insisting Riyad wants to stay); would he suddenly become essential all over again?

I'm not sure if Mahrez is more attractive as the star of Leicester, or a rotation risk a Arsenal/City...

    My current team is:

    Heaton Foster
    Shaw Terry N.Taylor Friend Dann
    Hazard Mkhi Lamela Bolasie Leko
    Long Rooney Aguero

I'm considering swapping Lamela and Leko for Matt Phillips and a 6m midfielder, but nobody in that bracket massively inspires me. Any thoughts are very welcome 🙂

I'd switch Dann out for Walker. Get rid of Rooney for Lukaku and switch Leko for Højbjerg. I think Lamela is a good choice.

Every year I make a team on the day fpl opens and I change it every day. I think I might just leave my team for now until a week before the start! This is how it stands atm

    Foster Jaku
    Azpi Shaw Williams Morgan Friend
    Mhki Tadic Ayew Townsend Hojbjerg
    Aguero Costa (Negredo)

    Heaton / Foster
    Shaw / Friend / Peters / Fernández / Souare
    KDB / Martial / Fabregas / Kouyate / Hojberg
    Ibra / Vardy / Wilson

    2.0 ITB

I'm ok with my budget back 7 as fixtures and rotation are kind for now. I'm not sure whether to upgrade Kouyate to Siggy, or Hojberg to a 6.5, or to restructure my attack completely.

Also Fab vs Willian is a conundrum still playing in my head.

Well I could always Ibra-> Aguero. I just expect him to snap in half at any given moment. Also I captained Aguero for most of the first few weeks of last season and got nothing for it.

Don't love the 3 premium defenders + Hazard pick. I'd downgrade Azpi to a 4.5, Hazard to KdB and upgrade one of Gray/Long

Hmm - not many strikers about for 7.5 though. Could go:
        Azpi > 4.5
        Hazard > 8.5 (Firmino?)
        Gray > 9.5

        Better?

I'd say you need 2.0 for a serviceable third striker. Take it from Hazard, Cech or a non-budget defender.

If you have any left over upgrade Paradeas to a starting 4.5 defender. Also I don't know if Redmond is the best choice? Bolasie could be an improvement for the same price.

Here's a first draft. Aimed at flexibility and a strong first couple of weeks. Usually I aim for very strong opening weekend, but I found the fixtures a struggle for that, though I've loaded CHE and MUN for the opening fixture anyway.

    Heaton, Foster
    Azpi, Stones, Pieters, Friend, Paredes
De Bruyne, Mkhitaryan, Fabregas, Dier, Capoue
    Kun, Rooney, Rondon

    1.0 ITB.

    Thoughts?

    1. Clumsy Sakho

I like it bar Dier and fab neither possess FPL potential in my opinion. Stones by no means nailed either- perhaps upgrade to Baines and Fab to Willian?

      1. Laporte In A Storm
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

Yep, fair points alround. Dier is a bit boring and he will probably change.
Fab is a bit of a punt. I don't know, I just have a feeling he's going to be a bit of a jewel in a Conte system. It's purely a gut call and a gamble. Will happily change if it fails.
Similarly with Stones, I have a feeling Koeman will get the best out of him. After the Spurs game they go on a decent run of fixtures, so I'm backing the lad to bounce back and flourish this season.

      2. theBoose
        • 11 Years

I agree with Dier but it all depends where Fabregas plays. If it's in the hole, he's a shoe in for me.

I'd switch Paredes, Dier, Capoue, Rondon and Rooney.

        1. Laporte In A Storm
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 11 months ago

Paredes and Capoue are simple enablers I think may at least get a game. Rondon feels good at 6.5 but there are lots of good strikers in that bracket so pre-season will probably decide that one. Rooney is dull for sure.

    2. Maarrrr17

Not fussed on Rooney or Rondon to be honest.
You cant upgrade with your 1 mil?

      1. Laporte In A Storm
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

Rooney is a dull opening fixture choice for now. Will be monitoring closely during pre-season and if he's out of form he'll be out, and that's what the spare mil is for at this stage. Rondon, though, I think is solid value at 6.5 and is a good, comfortable enabler for the rest of the team.

        1. Maarrrr17
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 11 months ago

Yeah, I guess though it all comes down to how they play under Jose. If Mkhitaryan plays like he did last season then I can see him being one of the highest scorers in the league. The amount of chances he creates is amazing, so who knows what chemistry he will have with rooney and Ibra. Hopefully an exciting season for Man U.

Sunderlands fixtures aren't great to start with so I'd ditch PvA, especially considering they're without a manager.

Azpi, Ash Williams, Evans, Pieters, Wilson
    KDB, Firmino, Fabregas, Gradel, Hojberg
    Aguero, Ibra, Long

I've decided on two big strikers because I prefer the team balance, but I can't decide between Fab + Ibra vs Mkhi + Costa. Any glaring weaknesses that I'm overlooking?

Mhki and Costa carries much more goal threat. Fab only worthwhile if Kante pushes him up the pitch further and the Costa partnership is reignited. Plus, no matter what people say, Ibra is still an unknown entity in this league and post Euro lay-off could hamper his early season form.

I'm currently 0.5 mil off having this

    Foster, Jaku
    Coleman, Walker, Friend, Azpi, Fuchs
    Mkhi, KDB, Payet, Townsend, Phillips
    Augero, Rhodes, Barnes

The obvious place to save would be Phillips or downgrade either Fuchs > Morgan or Walker > Wimmer

Problem is Fuchs is essentially the best BPS scorer in the league when they keep clean sheets and Wimmer might only get two games before Vert returns.

I'm genuinely really keen on Phillips with those fixtures but Capoue might have to be the one.

I'm inclined to but we all know either Rhodes, Grey, Wilson, Afobe are going to be great option early on. Boro's fixtures look too good to miss and he's a proven natural goalscorer just like the rest. Wilson on pens though which makes some appeal.

He essentially guaranteed them promotion with his goals late last season. The fans Karanka knows the fans want him up front, not a often lacklustre Negredo. Still, Rhodes is by no means risk free choice.

Or do we expect Wij to be a rotation with the mane cout and firm, then what of grujic, Henderson, Milner, ings and Origi? Pool certainly have a plethora of options at their disposal, so how do you expect them to line up on the 14th vs Arsenal?

Opinion would be much appreciated, thanks!

Gini is wasted at CDM. Klopp seems to like Lucas because he grafts every game. Can should play lone CDM in front of a better back four in my opinion. Means they can unleash the incredible midfield they now have.

I'll drive Lucas to Newcastle myself if it means he isn't our first choice midfielder!

We'll happily take him. Tiote and Anita are on thin ice.

For me there are just too many midfield options at the moment. Due to sparceness at the front and back I'd say your keeper, back 4 and striker are nailed-on, but I don't rate the defence and Studge is still too balsa for me, so currently I'm 'Pool-less.

Yet the allure of a free flowing Juergen Klopp attack is too much to miss out on no?

Well given their opening fixtures, I'm prepared to wait 5 weeks and see how they're shaping up.

Like last season (Mahrez) I am going for the cheap 4th midfielder...

Have it down to Fischer or Feghouli.

    Thoughts?

Fischer's potential has been somewhat lessened by Negredo getting signed. Fegouli is probably one to watch rather than a pre-season pick in my opinion. Matt Phillips has brilliant fixtures and goal/assist potential if West Brom actually score some goals early this season.

I was set on Feghouli as long as he played, but Fischer's goal and assist record at Ajax was far better than I thought it'd be.

      Very tempted by him.

Thoughts on this team would be greatly appreciated.

    Foster
    Shaw, Walker, Terry
    Hazard, Eriksen, Siggy, Bolasie
    Augero, Lukaku, Long

Subs : Heaton, Pieters, Friend, Capoue
    0.5m ITB for flexibility

GK : Rotate well and should get good save points
Def: Attacking players with some good early fixtures
Mid: Hoping Haz can recapture his form maybe in front 4. Eriksen and Siggy chipping in with regular points. Bolasie for fixtures
Fwd: Augero my main captain option. Lukaku has good fixtures. Long as the only main striker now.

Guys, need your opinion on whether Valdes & mandanda are nailed on?

I think they probably will be, but I'd need to see a few friendlies first

Both should be, although Boro going after Guzan worries me.

Strongly considering both, I think they're nailed, but then again we've seen amazing things such as Ashley Young being stuck upfront, so can never be 100%

Considering above comments foster seems to be a safer choice than valdes / mandanda.

First time poster here, RMT pls

    Mandana/Mannone
    Stones/Friend/Dann/Kone/Shaw
    Mikki/Tadic/Mane/Fabregas/Ibe
    Ighalo/Long/Aguero

Plan is to start Stones and Shaw with the keepers rotating with the defenders from the same club.
Feel its light up front but just can't not have Aguero

Decent picks mate but the team balance is a bit out for me. I'd consider downgrading somewhere to make that forward line a bit stronger. Theyre were most points cone from after all.

waiting to see what defenders Palace play as happy to drop Dann to save a mil there. If i bite the bullet and get rid of Kun then theres plenty i can do

Shaw if fit should be first choice Lb

Bailly is starter for me but Jose said Jones and Smalling are the main cb pairing, which doesn't float my boat

    Current team is

    Butland Foster
    Shaw Terry McAuley Robertson Friend
    Mkhitaryan Hazard Ibe Fischer Fletcher
    Aguero Ibra C. Wilson

Thoughts (apart from being light in mid)

Was tempted by Robertson myself but the injuries to Hull's back line and keeper are horrendous. better points opportunities elsewhere for same money IMO

Hey all what do you reckon to this squad if you please

    Mandanda valdes

    Shaw bellerin stones McCauley parades

    Mkhitaryian kdb firminio townsend hojlberg

    Aguero gray berahino

I'm a little concerned with the firepower but think firminio will start as a forward for Liverpool, especially now gini has joined. Thoughts appreciated

I keep swapping between these two..

    Mkhitaryan and Aguero

    or

    KdB and Ibra

...Keeper combo will be Cech and a 4.0, or Foster and Heaton.

Defenders are Azpi, Walker, Shaw, Friend and probably a 4.0

Midfield is tricky but hopefully at least three of Payet, Mkhit, Kdb, Firmino.. depends on the strikers.

Can't decide on any sort of team yet depending on how a few players on pre season look. I'm probably most solid about the defence atm. Is there even a cheap 4.5 striker available? or a who could be the best 9.0 striker or less?

      Feghouli for me

the 5.0 - 7.0 bracket is pretty grim and unless you're going cheap, he is the best option for me.
