The Fantasy Football Scout Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Hi guys, any chance a RMT??

At the moment I’m purposely taking a gamble on Jakupovic starting for Hull, freeing up an extra 0.5 to shoehorn Fabregas, or maybe Siggy in.

    Jakupovic Pickford

McCauley Kone Friend Pieters Soure (Rotating)

    KDB Mykitarian Fabregas Townsend Hojbjerg

    Aguero Zlatan Wilson

Openers against Stoke, WBA, Palace, Boro in that defence. Plenty of same price options at Bournemouth, Watford, Hull, Burnley if any of those turn out solid going into better fixtures. That was my justification anyway.

Swap Townsend for a 5.5 and spend on defence or Pickford upgrade. Actually don't because then we would have the same team.

So 9.5/10 from me, but I'm biased!

Cheers mate, was considering downgrading Fabregas to Milner in order to strengthen GK/Def as I really fancy Townsend after last season and Palaces favourable fixtures. Milner goes under radar but is assist machine and often on pens!

    Currently on this:

    Foster Heaton
    Shaw Terry Souare Friend Kone
    Hazard KDB Fischer Tadic/Ayew (Højbjerg)
    Aguero Lukaku Gray/Austin

    Any thoughts?

The 5th star requires a strong front line. It's all personal preference though, no one really knows what's going to happen GW1 🙂

Thanks for the input, I had to go AFK so bit of a late response:

I think Brunt is a really good pick if he's fit for GW1, but not sure who I'd ditch for him. Don't really like any of the cheaper forwards (Think 6.5 is too much for a newly promoted forward, and reckon Austin/Long might get rotated).

Starting to draft my team, any help would be great:

    FOSTER (HEATON)
    WALKER, STONES, SHAW (EVANS, FRIEND)
    FIRMINO, MARTIAL, PAYET, TADIC (CAPOUE)
    AGUERO DEENEY BERAHINO

I think my front 3 are weak. Any help please 🙂

            Love the aggressive front three.

Rooney could well surprise us all. I was on him at the start of last season though, and once bitten, twice...

What's your thinking behind Ayew? Do you think he'll start up top? Miralles is an intersting one, has all the potential and Koeman likes a flare man.

            1. Piggs Boson
              • 12 Years
              7 years, 11 months ago

Ayew was scoring goals from the wide area anyway, but I believe he will be up top yes. Only two midfielders scored more goals than him, Mahrez and Sanchez.

Mirallas is a punt, but he's as direct as Mane, and I think Koeman will give him similar freedom. Goal scoring midfielders are gold dust.

    Cech Jakupovic

Hazard Mkhitaryan (?) Townsend Ayew (?) Capoue

Bailly in at 5.5 but debating between him, Shaw and Baines.

Personally I would remove Ayew for a 5.5/6 to free up 1.5/2.

And put that towards the mkhit, or zlat replacement.

Heaton to Valdes, Mandanda, Foster - All better chances of clean sheets in my eyes.

Not sure on Hennessey's game time.

      Defence is nice

      Midfield a tad risky.

Forwards nice, but swap Rondon for someone in a more free-scoring team around the same price (Brom struggled in front of goal last year, and are also likely to lose Berahino's liveliness around the box).

    Ibrahimovic, Agüero, Austin

Downgrade de Gea for Foster to free up 1m and boost one of the weaker midfielders? I can't see any striker options at 7.5m I like, so I'm prepared to chance Austin. I could upgrade Kante (Chelsea defensive midfielders never score highly) and take a punt on Bolaise - not many 6m midfielders I like.

After a lot of analysis (mainly based on ease of fixtures, rotation & my preferred 3-4-3 formation) this is what I arrived at (for Aug/Sept fixtures). Team Value: 100m.

GK: Foster (GW 1-7) Jankupovic (GW 8-10)
DEF: Walker / Coleman / Evans / Friend / (Paredes)
MID: Eriksen / Siggy / Tadic / Townsend / (Kightly or Capoue)
FWD: Aguero / Kane / Lukaku

Inputs are much appreciated on the following:

    1) How does the team look? (No CHE/ARS/MANU/LIV player in team atm)

    2) Which 17m (FWD+MID) combo is expected to fare better:
    (Lukaku/Rooney + Siggy) OR (Rhodes + KDB) OR (Long + Mkh/Martial)

    Cheers !

Certainly going for it up front and it might be the right thing to do. I'd just worry a bit about balance. Might replace Lukaku or Kane with Long and upgrade Tadic to Ozil/Payet/Mikhi?

Re your question....I like the last one. I like Long at his price and Mikhi should be a beast.

        Thanks for the insight mate.

But do you really prefer Mkh over Martial ? It may take him some time to adjust and Martial who was a FWD last yr is listed as MID now.

Moreover I like Long too but his first 7 fixtures involve visits to Man Utd / Arsenal / West Ham / Leicester. That faded away my interest.

No United in attack is a concern... after all their buys they just must be scoring .
      2) Long + Mkh

I was thinking the same about United attack. But Long has some really tough away fixtures to manu/ars/wham/lei in first 7 games. Do u see any other way to include Mkh/Martial?
Or how abt Lukaku-> Rooney as Mou assured him of attacking role.

    de Gea (Jaku)
    Bellerine Walker McCauley Souare Paredes
    Mikhi Alli Coutinho Bolaise Fletcher
    Kun Lukaku Long

No Arsenal cover first week. Likely to trade out Mikhi for Ozil after week one as I assume Wenger will rest Ozil week 1. Could also keep Mikhi for a few weeks and then replace Lukaku with Giroud (or any other incoming Arsenal striker). Welcome any opinions...

I like it. Would like to see Shaw as a regular first. Only other possibility would be Long for Gray?

Cheers fellas....Shaw seems to be very active in preseason...

Gray is nailed and on pens....

Not quite sure if long is as nailed as gray...

So far got this, went all out attack, tell me what u all think? Should replace a striker for a better midfield, and if so who?

    Mandanda (Jaku)

    Shaw, Walker, Friend, Williams. (Paredes)

    Ayew, Fabregas, Townsend. (Leko, Feghouli)

    Kane, Ibra, Ageuro

Kinda like it but I prefer to play 3-4-3 myself so I'd lose Kane or Ibra and upgrade midfield.

    Rate My team guys
    hart boruc
    shaw terry wimmer mcauley friend
    kdb hazard eriksen bolasie downing
    zlatan long Carroll

hart nd boruc rotate pretty well. terry can be replaced by a starting cfc defender. wimmer looks to start in a capable spurs defence.

kdb looks better value over kun, hazard looked sharp @ euros but i could switch to costa nd mk zlatan mkhitaryan if need be.

i had townsend but bolasie for 0.5 less seems better value. may also switch caroll nd downing for feghouli nd rhodes(or a starting boro forward).
also eriksen to lamela is another option allowing me more funds elsewhere.

    main options
    mkhi vs zlatan
    hazard vs costa
    feghouli vs caroll
    downing vs Rhodes
    eriksen vs lamela
    townsend vs bolasie
    tadic vs long

    Hey!
    RMT please.

Bear in mind i have chosen som low-budget players in my team to have enough funds for both Zlatan and Aguero.

    Butland, Jakupovic
    Friend, Shaw, Walker, Souaré, Koné
    Fabregas, Capoue, Mkhitaryan, Mahrez, Hojberg
    Ibrahimovic, Agüero, Wilson.

    Thoughts ? 🙂
