The Fantasy Football Scout Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Does anyone think there is a chance Southampton may play Tadic as a false 9? At Nice, Claude Puel played more 4-3-3, with Ben Arfa more of a false 9 alongside two wide energetic strikers. Long and Redmond could easily play these roles and Tadic is the closest Saints have to a Ben Arfa type creator capable of scoring goals

Would be interesting to see. I'm trying to get Tadic into my side but just can't put him at a higher priority to Haz/Ayew/Martial. Also, don't want to go midfield heavy with Townsend and other cheaper mid's looking useful.

Hey guys! Could you please RMT?

    Mandanda (Foster)
Terry / Jones / Dawson (Evans / Friend)
De Bruyne / Fabregas / Barkley / Bojan (Khazri)
    Aguero / Lukaku / Austin

If Austin doesn't look like a nailed on starter, or if Berahino moves and no replacement is found I will get Rondon.
Also my thoughts behind Bojan and Khazri is that Bojan will potentially play upfront for Stoke, while Khazri will be making most of the chances at Sunderland.
Also, for now I have Jones because I have heard that he may be a starter for Man U, so he looks like a great option.

I think personally KDB is over priced. I went for willian instead of Faberegas but it's a gut feeling. I have taken Eriksen instead of KDB with Lukaku, Costa and Aguero. I'm going with Barkley right now also but am thinking of Tardic because of his penalty duties. Do you know hw quickly the valuations change (is't my first time not playing the Danish version in which I've done well. 108 last year)? I'm not sure of Jones health so I have gone for Morgan and Shhaw instead of Terry (will he play?) and Jones. I think Taylor is a must have at 4,5.

Thank you for your suggestions and help!

I just have De Bruyne because I feel like Man City will have a great season, and in my opinion a lot of goals.
I will consider that as an option though because someone like Eriksen will still provide the points, and I could upgrade someone like my striker as you suggested.

This is my second year of playing so I don't know too well about how the prices change, personally I use a website where they predict price changes, and they are generally correct.

I would like to have 3 city players because I belive you are spot on about city. Nolito is an interesting alternative to KDB and would give you 1,5 to spend elsewhere. Nolito is the managers pick, and more of a "striker" so I think he'll play. Looking at the price of Sterling and Silva surely someone is overpriced. Just like City defenders. I fear a lot of rotation in the city team which is why I have gone with only Aguero. I don't thik KDB alone will make as many point as the two / three upgrades you'd get elsewhere accumulative. In my opinion you should stay clear from players having played this summer. Or at least players who went far. The first time Bayerne Munich won the championship when Germany did well for example was the 2006/7 season.

Could you remenod a site you use for predicting prices?

I agree with you, a lot of their players are a bit overpriced.
I would go with Nolito but I don't like picking players who are new to the league and haven't proven themselves, which is why I don't have players like Ibra or Mkhytaryan.

The website that I used last season was 'Price Change Predictor'. If you search 'fpl price changes' into your searchbar it should be first, well it is for me.
It looks like they haven't updated their website for the new season yet.
There could be better ways to know who may be getting price changes, but I don't know any more.

I quite like the team, however I'm a bit scare of Soouthamtons scheduel. I have Tadic also but I'm thinking of swappng him for Barkley. Even if Tadic did best last year. My team at the moment is:

    Cech / Mandanda

    Shaw / Morgan / Taylor / Wimmer / Souaré

    Willian / Eriksen / Barkley / Iwobi / Hojberg

    Aguero / Lukaku / Costa

    The plan is a 3-4-3.

It's my first time playing the offcial game but i ended 108 in the Dansih version (different rules) last year. In no small part to the data gathered being a member of this great site. I have question, how fast does the valuations of players change. My team is assmbled with the first weeks in mind. already have several changes in mind once the prefered line-up become clear fromvarious teams. Especially LFC.

Player price changes depends upon changes in ownership. The quicker the adding/removing of a player, the quicker the rise/drop.

Thank you very much :o) Do you know if the equation they use is available? I'm pondering going with 2 or 3 LFC players from the sixth round, but I'm guessing many people are. Would it make sense getting them before round five instead or are the increases so low it would make more sense (mathematically) to go for the extra points other players might gain in round five?

I can't wait to try my wits on this game instead of the Danish one.

0.1M price change is fairly common if a player has an okay/not so okay week, if someone bags a couple of goals, expect their price to rise 0.2M for that week and -0.2M for an injury possibly 🙂

Think Ibra & Miki to start with is a risk. Parades not likely to start so his price will quickly drop with an already high ownership. Plus, easier and cheaper ways to get into Utd defence than DDG.

    Thoughts on this?

    Heaton (Foster);

    Shaw, Walker, Friend (Francis, Naylor);

    Hazard, Martial, Ayew, Townsend (Capoue);

    Kun, Lukaku, Gray

£0.0m ITB. Debating over Kun w/ hefty price but pretty happy overall and seems to be decent rotation for defence. Also, I'm planning to take Gray out for Wilson after Bournemouth's tricky fixture start.

Solid team. Options to save a little cash include switching down to Jakupovic at GK if Hull do not buy a new option. Could also switch Walker to Stones if he moves to City. Then could potentially upgrade Lukaku to Costa (though that may be too much Chelsea) or Gray to Musa for some Leicester cover in that Hull game.

      1. Villa Velour

Cheers for the advice. Although, I do think if Stones was to move then he'd be eased into the squad rather than being nailed on. Plus, Walker seems a bargain at £5m with clean sheets and potential attacking points.

RMT please. I had to almost start from scratch to get in Aguero and Ibrahimovic

    Foster, Heaton
    Shaw, Friend, Pieters, Francis, Williams
    Martial, Townsend, Ayew, Coutinho, Capoue
    Aguero, Ibra, Long

I went with Coutinho over any other 7.5 mid, dunno if its a risk.

    1. BrigadeRosse

Coutinho should definitely play *most of the time*. But Liverpool do now have a bunch of options. Perhaps Fabregas or Willian to get some chelsea cover and save 0.5. Or even Barkley?

    Adrian, Foster
    Shaw, Pieters,Souare, Fernandez, Evans
    KDB, Mkh, Alli, Feghouli, Capoue
    Aguero, Lukaku, Carroll

I was hoping someone could tell me how to change my captain (not that I will change from Aguero anyway)- I can't seem to find the option on my screen. I thought maybe my adblocker might be getting it but that's not the case...

    Hi everyone,

    this is my draft team.

    GK: Butland, Jakupovic

DF: Cresswell, Funes Mori, Dawson, Amat, Paredes

MF: Firmino, Sigurdsson, Hazard, Feghouli, Fletcher

    FW: Aguero, Costa, Lukaku

    Any thoughts?

      Solid team overall.

Is Butland worth the extra 0.5 over a Heaton or Foster?

Keep an eye on Dawson's fitness. Robertson may be a more attacking option anyway if you want to cover Hull.

    Hey Guys,

This is my first draft GW1. Please feel free to rip it to shreds

    Valdes / Foster

    Terry / Coleman / Morgan / Souare / Paredes

    Eriksen / Mkhitaryan / Silva / Sigurdsson / Can

    Ibra / Giroud / Austin

Giroud is until arsenal sign another striker. No Liverpool players as they are my team and my mistake in the past has been to favourtise them

Completely understand the Liverpool superstition. I would be scared of going without Aguero given their fixtures. But Silva maybe helps a little there. Not sure that Austin will definitely start, so a switch to Long could be good.

Why not Capoue for Can. He has already scored 2 goals in pre-season.
And since you don't have burnley, why not go for Gray. He has more certain chance of starting over Austin

    Foster - Jakupovic
    Shaw - Stones - Friend - Souare - 4.0
    Hazard - Martial - Tadic - Feghouli - Fletcher
    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Long

Foster set for the first 6 games
Stones has great fixtures and could end up at Citeh
Martial, had he been listed as a midfielder would have been ranked 3rd but he only played 29 games, so who knows in a full season

    Mandanda - Jaku
    Dann - Walker - Azpi - Shaw - Stones
    Mané - Mkhitaryan - Firmino - Tadic - Downing
    Ibrahimovic - Hernandez - Austin

    Questions:
    - Is the defense too expensive?

Mid looks very weak imo.Not sure about Antonio as a pick

Yeah MID way to weak. Antonio not a good pick imo-hearsay only but could play in a more defensive role etc....personally wouldn't start with any LIV players, especially MIDS, bring in later....Tadic could be decent if plays false #9 role + PENO's
Maybe Zlat>>Mkhi/Martial frees up 2m to strengthen MID
Wilson>>Gray frees up none but prefer to see what Gray has in PREM then can always switch to Wilson after his early tough fixtures

Have to agree about the Mid. Know Jonty has Ibrahimovic and Aguero but can only Captain one of them. Antonio most likely play right back so reduces his possible points as midfielder.

    RMT

    Jaku, Foster
    Dann, Shaw, Friend, Williams, PVA
    KDB, Hazard, Eriksen, Townsend, Højbjerg
    Aguero, Gray, Long/Austin

Still think I need Utd coverage - maybe Mkhi. Not sure who to sacrifice as I feel Hazard and KDB are more safe point scorers.

Nice team bud, one of the best i've seen so far! Btw the new southampton manager had a prefered front 3 all under 5ft9 and the midfield 3 even smaller at his previous club so he favours smaller players with more pace and agility so Long could have a better chance than Austin as the number 9... read it somewhere not sure how true it is though

Maybe downgrade one of the defenders (PVA or Dann) and KDB to Mkhi to fund an upgrade of Gray??

    Appreciate if could RMT.

    Mandanda/Mannone
    Shaw/Funes Mori/Friend/Evans/Holebas
    Tadic/Townsend/Erikson/Barkley/Mkhitaryan
    Ibrahimovic/Lukaku/Callus Wilson

Worry that have no City and maybe too much Everton and United

Funes Mori is a little risky as he might not be nailed on with Jagielka and Stones especially with a new manager, as i say this i do have Stones so probs a little hypocritical! Like the midfield though although i would play it safe and try and fit in Aguero over Ibra maybe by downgrading Lukaku?

That would mean an 8.0 striker. Maybe Ighalo or Deeney once fixtures improve.

I just feel that Aguero is a proven scorer in this division and imo the best striker in the prem whilst Ibra is coming in and we dont really know how he is gonna play at all. He could bang in 20 this season or he could struggle and get like 7, for me i'd just wanna spend that little bit more for safety and see how ibra plays in the first few gameweeks. Callum Wilson is a great shout though, i had him when he scored that hat trick last season!

I agree. I'd worry about having an expensive 5th midfielder and Wilson. Tough choices. I'd downgrade one midfielder to upgrade Ibra to Aguero.

            Aguero in with either
            A) Erikson to Ayew
            B) Barkley to Noble

    Evening Lads

    Foster Heaton
    Walker Friend Shaw Souare Stones
    Gradel Hazard Bojan Payet Eriksen
    Long Aguero Gray

It would be really appreciated if u could give your opinion on my draft and what changes you would make.
    Thanks in advance

Not sure if Payet will play straight away after Euros. I think I'd downgrade either him or eriksen to fun an upgrade of second striker.

    Heaton/Jakupovic
    Friend/Funes Mori/Dawson/£4.5/£4.5
    Siggy/Hazard/Mhikitarian/Townsend/Fletcher
    Ibra/Kun/Wilson

    Thoughts guys? 🙂

Looking good although defence looks a little week, might be worth playing it safe and only going with one of mkh and ibra thus using some of the money to upgrade the defence a little

I agree...I think it looks weak but still good chance of clean sheets, given the fixtures? I know I shouldn't really have both Ibra and Mhiki but can't bring myself not to have Either haha Hmmmmmmmm...Mybown worst enemy!

I'd be tempted to work in either Mahrez or Vardy for one of the Utd duo. That Hull game is setting up nicely for the champs.

Which two out of three would you go for? Mahrez, Mhki, Hazard.

Will probably have Costa up front. And the 0.5 is not really a problem.

hi it would be greatly appreciated if you could rate my team
    Mandanda (jakupvic)
    sagna williams azpilliqueta (freind,souare)
bojan de bruyne siggy martial (fletcher)
aguero lukaku rhodes/berahino (if he moves to stoke)

I like Sagna but I'd be wary of him being rested. Also wonder if having a Chelsea option in place of KDB is an option.

I've been looking at taking a slightly contrary approach to my team and for the start of the season not really having any bench fodder. This will likely change as the season goes on but gives me flexibility to downgrade one play in any position to fund an upgrade in any other.

    Heaton // Foster
Shaw // Stones (whether he moves or not) // Evans // Friend // Ivanovic
    Townsend // Bojan // Mkhitaryan // Sigurdsson // Fabregas
Aguero // Berahino (if he goes to Stoke) // Benteke (if he goes to Palace)
    £1.5m ITB

Many ifs in there and this is an early draft. However, my main thoughts are whether I'll be missing out on Ibrahimavic and/or de Bruyne. Are there any areas you'd change and is the whole principle of going with no cheapies flawed in the first place?

    Appreciate any thoughts!

Actually a very solid looking team. Only problem I see is funding significant upgrades if we have more than two expensive MFs/FWs firing in first week or two. But certainly gives you good cover in the mid range.

Thanks. Is it worth the sacrifice of missing out on one more big hitter though? The fixtures seem so mixed at the start of the season that I can't really pin down too many "optimal" teams to own so the mix and match approach seems fun and may just work?!?

Double WBA and Burnley home game rotation anyone??

    Heaton Foster
    Shaw Walker Keane Dawson Friend
    Mkhi Eriksen Firmino Townsend Fletcher
    Aguero Long Gray

    2.0m ITB

If Tekkers goes to Palace I may get him and change Townsend for Fabregas. Or alternatively shaving 1.0m off my defence enables me to play a tasty 3-5-2 with Fabregas as 5th mid and Long/Gray mixing it up.

I'm also considering going Cech/4.0m and just rotating Dawson/Keane. If Keane leaves I'll get Mee which would kind of be a blessing!
