Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round-Up

Gerard Deulofeu notches once again as Everton are defeated in Dresden. Bournemouth new boy Lewis Cook opens his account, whilst Tottenham slip to defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

Dynamo Dresden 2 Everton 1

Gerard Deulofeu’s third goal in as many pre-season matches was the only real highlight of a Dresden encounter in which events off the field were arguably of greater interest.

The young Spaniard scored from a free-kick he earned himself and again looked lively in a side otherwise lacking a cutting edge that struggled to play the high-tempo, quick-passing game that new coach Ronald Koeman demands.

Centre-half John Stones played the majority of the match amid news that his proposed move to Manchester City had stalled over the asking price for the England international, while striker Romelu Lukaku was an unused sub as rumour surfaced of a bid from his former club Chelsea.

One player looking likely to bolster Koeman’s squad is Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye. The Villa boss Roberto di Matteo conceded:

“It’s public Everton have triggered his clause and he’s going to leave. There’s no news so far but the expectation is, once personal terms are agreed and a medical [is done], he’s going to go. There are other clubs interested, that’s right, but the only official bid so far has been from Everton.”

Maarten Stekelenburg again started in goal ahead of Joel Robles, while Deulofeu continues to shine in a “false nine” role he has been asked to fill out of necessity.

With Lukaku’s future still uncertain and Arouna Kone recovering from a knee injury, Koeman took time to praise the in-form youngster, who, despite a kind 6.5 price tag, is still owned by just 3% of managers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game:

“We have some good players who can score from a free-kick. It was Kevin Mirallas against Barnsley and today we saw the quality of Gerard. You can win matches with set plays so it is good to see. Gerard had some good opportunities, he worked hard and had good movement. Maybe he had to score one of the two big chances he had in the second half. But he is dangerous out of that position and that is good to see because we need that pace.”

Everton XI: Stekelenburg, Coleman, Stones (Holgate 69), Funes Mori, Baines, Davies (Besic 46), Gibson, Lennon, Barkley (Dowell 69), Mirallas, Deulofeu.

Tottenham 0 Atletico Madrid 1

Christian Eriksen’s return from illness wasn’t enough to prevent Spurs from slipping to a second straight defeat yesterday morning.

The Dane was joined by Erik Lamela and Josh Onomah in the attacking midfield roles behind summer signing Vincent Janssen, whilst fellow new boy Victor Wanyama was afforded another start in central midfield.

Both Lamela – who scored against Juventus in midweek – and Onomah rattled the woodwork but Mauricio Pochettino’s men were unable to find a way past the Champions League runners-up, with Atletico keeper Jan Oblak earning the man of the match accolade.

The Spurs boss was again without his Euro 2016 contingent and relied on a number of youngsters as he rang the changes over the second period. At the back, Kevin Wimmer missed out once more with a minor hamstring problem.

Spurs XI: Vorm (McGee 75); Trippier (Walker-Peters 60), Walkes, Carter-Vickers, Yedlin (Miller 60); Wanyama (Mason 46), Winks (Ball 75); Lamela (Son 46), Eriksen (Carroll 46), Onomah (Chadli 60); Janssen (Edwards 75).

Reading 1 Bournemouth 1

Summer signing Lewis Cook opened his Bournemouth account as his new side completed the first part of a pre-season double header.

The former Leeds star scored eight minutes before half-time, but their Championship opponents fought back after the break, exposing a Cherries backline missing a number of key personnel.

Howe was forced to use winger Marc Pugh at right-back to cover for his lack of options at the back, and having conceded three goals in their previous run-out at Portsmouth, his team’s defensive fragility remains a worry with the Premier League opener now just a fortnight away.

Nathan Ake was given his first start, playing on the left-hand side of central defence alongside captain Simon Francis, and Max Gradel returned in midfield following a one-match suspension.

After the match, Eddie Howe was optimistic that the injury situation in defence will clear up before their season opener against Man United two weeks’ tomorrow:

“Having two games to get teams together for this weekend is difficult. You need eight defenders and we don’t have that at the moment. But we are confident we will have enough by the time the season starts, whether that means we will have to recruit or that we will have people back fit, we will have to wait and see.”

The relevance of Howe’s team selections has to be tempered by the fact that Bournemouth are in action again today, at home to Cardiff City.

Nonetheless, the Cherries boss was certainly pleased with the performance of his new signings:

“Lewis took his goal very well and it was a really energetic performance from him.Nathan also looked very comfortable at centre back, so that was very pleasing to see and a good sign for us. I think this is the squad with the most potential that I’ve ever had. They have to prove now that they are the best squad, and that will come with the results and performances ahead of us.”

Bournemouth XI: Boruc, MacDonald, Francis, Ake, Daniels, Gosling, Cook, Gradel, Pugh, King, Wilson (Mousset 62).

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic - The Strong Front 8

A traditional GW1 team usually consists of a cheap 4.5m attacker who you will bench every week. Rarely does this player offer any consistent FPL potential and usually they are either a total stab in the dark or will guarantee no more than 2pts a week.

Now I'm aware that a benched player doesn't need to be able to score points but having the flexibility of a strong front 8 can be a useful tactic. Here are a few reasons why.

    EMERGENCY COVER
If there is an injury, or a player you picked for GW1 doesn't end up being nailed on, you have strong cover and you don't have to rely on Fletcher to save your GW.

    FLEXIBILITY
Its easier to downgrade a 6m+ midfielder to the best performing cheap midfielder and it also avoids the guesswork.

YOU BUY ANOTHER MID PRICED TICKET
At the start of the season we really don't know who will perform well. Choosing all 3 of Tadic, Bojan, and Townsend for example instead of having to drop one increases your odds of selecting the right mid priced assets at the start.

    ITS AN INVESTMENT
By selecting more players you actually like because they are likely to offer strong FPL value, you'll increase your chances of gaining team value. I don't think Fletcher will go up in price much.

In conclusion team structure is an important part of our pre season plans. Ultimately, how you spread your funds will dictate how easy it is to trade players in and out of your team. There are many strategies and ways to play this game, and this is just one example of what you could do. How are you likely to set up your team, and would you consider the flexibility of a strong front 8?

Hoping to keep it balanced with a strong 15:

      Mannone Pickford
      Shaw Dann Williams McAuley Friend
      Townsend Mkhit Willian Mahrez Fletcher
      Aguero Lukaku Carroll/Gray

The hot topic is advocating the benefits of a strong front 8, and even offers Fletcher as an example of a weak player - the 'bench fodder' model.

I think this is bourn from having no standout pricey forwards for GW1. Costa now a doubt, will Ibrahimovic be ready, etc.

Still, you can come up with a strong front 8 like this:

      Mandanda - Foster
      Shaw - Gabriel - Zuniga - Fernandez - Pieters
      Deulefeu - Hazard - Mirallas - Ayew - Gradel
      Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Austin

      I quite like it.

Gradel is interesting as he's 5.5 and offers very strong FPL value. I agree that most won't get him because they want Wilson and are reluctant to double up on Bournemouth. If Benteke leaves for another PL club that might be the catalyst for change.

I'm not that big on an attacking rotation but instead would look to bench the player with the weakest fixture. Potentially a squad could have 3 or 4 attackers that are bench-able if they play a top side

I don't necessarily agree with the investment part. If you get the right 4.5 midfielder they tend to go up in price quite quickly. But I would also say that the wrong 4.5 (and there are a lot of them) tend to drop to 4.4 within the first few gameweeks too.

Much harder to get the right 4.5 mid compared to a 6.0mid. My main argument against a 4.5 is they are usually a stab in the dark and very unlikely to be any good. At least compared to a 5.5 or 6.0.

At the start of the season? Unless they're a Mahrez/Alli quality, a 4.5 ticking over isn't a priority transfer.

Agree on the wrong 4.5 though. That's normally the template 4.5 who offers your squad nothing but is one injury/suspension/benching away from a fire sale. A easy trap to fall into just because they're popular.

In most normal season's, I'd say no.

I haven't started building a team yet, but with the likes of Deulofeu showing good value in the mid-priced mids, maybe this could work this season. The chances are one will flop, but at that stage you can swap with the right 4.5 and upgrade to a form asset somewhere else.

I'm not 100% certain 100m will stretch that far in reality, but I'll give it a go. 🙂

A cheap playing 4.5 mill 5th mid is much better than the 4.5 striker, can get 3 points for a clean sheet - always one mid pops up such as Fletcher, Boyd etc

a good 4.5m attacker is hard to find regardless. Why not do away with the idea altogether and jump on the cheap wagon once they reveal themselves. Could take a few GW's.

I don't think you will find any forward for less than 5.5 worth having and most templates tend to be 3 up top.

Ultimately the team needs a 4.5 playing mid (maybe picked for the odd home games) to save cash for bigger hitters - this year it is probably Fletcher at the moment with a 6.5 3rd striker as template.

Not sure many GW1 teams will have a 4.5 forward at all, I certainly will not 🙂

*waiting for Benteke/Bony/Ulloa for move clubs then panic wildly trying to squeeze another million out of my mids

Doesn't have to be a forward, could be a midfielder as well. When I refer to an attacker I'm referring to forwards or mids.
Im a 343 man almost all the time and I am generally talking about downgrading to a budget mid once a good one reveals themselves.

Wouldn't this method see you going for cheap defenders though to accommodate a strong front 8? Those defenders could just as easily drop from 4.5 to 4.4 like the fifth midfielder as it is just as hard to predict which ones are nailed.

Typically teams will have about 3 or 4 4.5 defenders that they rotate. I'm going with a 5.5, 5.0 and 3x4.5's that I'll rotate. The safety with defenders is you only ever have to start 3 so if one bombs its no big deal.

"...team structure is an important part of our pre-season plans..."

This is very true. Structure and strategy should provide the framework for player selection. Player selection should then be done on the basis of overall value.

For me, I will be starting with a strongish front 8 because I intend to play BB within the first 3 weeks, possibly in GW1. After I wildcard (before GW4 most likely) I will revert to a "proper" structure according to whether I decide to base my squad on 3-4-3, 3-5-2 or 4-4-2. Which of those I will go for will depend on how the premium-priced players look after some actual games.

Not sure how you can define it as sensible. You're getting no rotation risk and early lead instead of playing it when you have better TV and in a DGW.

It might work out for you, but not sure I follow the logic. Judging by last seasons chips, best bet is still definitely the DGWs, just with careful selection of players from teams not in a European competition.

Don't think anyone can really say BB in a DGW is a clear strategic error to be honest.

The flaw was in letting the tail wag the dog. A consensus developed on here that to make best use of the BB one would have to play it the immediate week after wildcard.

As it turned out Sanchez & Aguero both hit blockbusters which were ideal for TC. Really in analysing all the known DGW captain options they were far and away the most superior options for TC but I like many got caught up with the group think of strategy although my gut had said to me TC one of those players.

BB wasn't great for me that week, but I should have played TC. If I hadve played BB in the Everton/Palace dgw if memory serves me correct Dele Alli scored well as did Kane / Spurs options I saw some serious bench points that week as people filled teams with DGW options and benched good forms SGW options.

I just don't think it's so cut and dry to say it's a strategic error, there really isn't enough data. In memory the Eve/Pal week would've been a good one. Perhaps my memory is wrong. It just didn't come to pass. That doesn't mean it will come to pass.

I'll be perfectly honest and say I'd be rubbing my hands together if I was in a pack of players in a mini league and I had my BB and they used theirs in GW1.

It's timing for me. Any advantage you make for me can be chipped into over a period of time. Keeping it and using it later for me anyway could give my rivals less time to react and gain the chips.

I blew mini leagues apart with late chips last season I'll hopefully do the same again.

Rub away. BB is no big deal. Allowing it to compromise the way you use the 2nd wildcard is, however, a big deal. A strategic error in fact. 🙂

Strategy is all relative to what your trying to achieve. Mini leagues: 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd. £850 lifted. Strategic objectives achieved.

I could have abandoned the BB decision and used the TC. The WC and BB are separate and distinct. For me group think decided for me that I was pot committed to the combination play of both. My error was in not following my gut to TC. I had the option still to use either. The reality is I would have still played my wildcard when I did.

All in my season result made my tactics and strategy bang on for my goals at the start. Be interesting to see how your strategy works for you.

The idea would be to downgrade someone to a cheap 4.5 -5m player once one reveals themselves. There would have come a point that Mahrez would be considered a 4th mid. You might have been late on that one.

Personally rotation just brings too many problems. A lot of analyzing and second guessing and in the end the player you decide to keep on the bench ends up getting more points. It's bad enough rotating defense players, never mind attackers. I remember doing this with Kane once. He was on a great run getting points every week, then Spurs were playing away to Chelsea so I thought right, this is the week where he will blank, put him on the bench and I seem to remember he scored a hat trick.

Rotation is great when you get it right, but for me it's not very often. I'm happy just having people who will play 60 minutes and get me 2 points if they get auto subbed.

      I always pick a strong front 8.

It gives me the opportunity to select based on form, fixture, rotation risk at certain times of year, knowing that all 8 can produce good numbers.

Plus I honestly love the challenge of getting it just right. Being on the selection headaches.

Yes of course. It's a tea based on a probable wc in the international break. Should ayew move he'll be replaced with siggy.

          Forster jakup

          Shaw, Williams, terry, stones, pva

          Miki, deulofeu,, tadic, ayew, grades

          Kaku, kun, gray

            Cheers mate...

Strikeforce matches mine, so must be good 😀

Midfield is good, but I almost feel it lacks one more heavy-hitter in Mhki's price range.

This is probably due to the fact you've been very generous with your defence. I would probably not spend 5M on anyone outside of my first choice 3.

However, you said that this was a team with an early WC in mind, so perhaps you're already planning on redistributing that defensive budget once you know where it can be better used.

Good team all in all mate.

I've had a 4.5M mid fir the last week or two, and I'm always uncomfortable with it. Especially as I've got my eye on lots of budget midfielders, and as you say I'll likely pick the wrong one.

Do you think this team goes too far the other way in terms of spreading the cash thinly?

      Heaton - Foster
      Azpilicueta - Fuchs - Friend - Koné - Smith
      Mahrez - Ayew - Tadic - Deulofeu - Townsend
      Agüero - Lukaku - Gray

It looks fine imo. Defence seems well balanced in terms of price spread and you are only one transfer away to getting the form cheap mid/forward.

There's a lot of good sense spouted forth there, Ryan, particularly if you are looking to WC early on. Let it be said, I have never done well with a "strong front 8" - I like having a 4.5 to sit on the bench and enable me to spend more money on better players.

However, at the start of the season, it seems a sensible policy. The only handicap - apart from getting the right players of course - is the cost of Ibra and Kun. Getting these two in limits other areas of your team.

Like many I suspect, a poor start made by missing out on this year's "Mahrez" is in many a mind right now. Good post.

Good topic, with the start of the season being uncertain for many there's an argument to be had with regards to having a strong front 8 while you can build a strong front 8, burn that useless AOA chip so you can play them all and then wildcard in your proper team with the right enablers in defence and attack as everyone is just guessing at the moment with regards to the cheap players.

It's defiantly a strategy I'm toying with, the AOA chip is no good to anyone with a 4.5 mind solid 2 point 5th midfielder so might as well kill two birds with one stone and have the front 8 and kill the chip so you're not tempted to break your structure once the season starts because you feel you have to use it.

Why plan for such a car crash start? A WC should be kept for when you really need it, not to fix a GW1 team.

I'd instead plan a squad for the first 4/5 GW's and then assess if the WC is needed.

I thought about this as well be realised it is very rash and re-considered the plan.

There is no guaranteed that all your midfielders/attackers will score heavy for a start.
The attacking defenders might score more.
Also there are lots of mid-price/budget midfielders that can be rotated I think that would be a safer tactic.

Is a problem! Need more than 9.5 for those two positions. 6.5 striker and then 4.5 bench fodder so 11 minimum. Downgrade one of Haz/Mahrez/Mkhi to a 7.5 i.e. Tadic or Chelsea mid

Will have high ownership to start with. If he starts well, I'll bring him in on a GW4 wildcard, if he doesn't start games his value will tank on the back of a firesale, in which case I'll bring him in for 4.2 on my GW4 wildcard.

My 4.5 pick will be the guy with the smallest ownership purely to protect SV.

I like my forwards to be the main man up top so I am going with Ibra/Aguero. For this reason I think I am swaying away from Costa/Bats/Hazard and looking towards Fabs who will be the supply chain. I think the rest will share the goals and Fabs will also bang in a few. Caveat: assuming Conte plays 2 up front.

Agree with Kun/Ibra up top. One of those Chelsea mids at 7.5 will be good value, it may be Willian over Fabs though so personally I'm just waiting to see and will transfer in for Ayew/Siggy once Swans fixtures turn.

Well he is just a placeholder really but need to monitor as no one knows yet (probably in pivot). Willian an alternative. TBH it just makes all their assets less appealing. My main point was 1 up top 🙂

Would like some opinions on this as I have seen a number of teams in a similar scenario.

With the abundance of 6.5 and less striking options and almost no standout options in the mid-price bracket, what is everyone's thoughts on two 6.5 or below strikers alongside Aguero/Ibra?

        1. Pasqualinho
          • 15 Years
          7 years, 10 months ago

There has to be a compromise somewhere to free up funds, so it's a valid strategy. If I consider it, it would only be short-term, though - I'm sure a lucrative mid-price striker will become apparent at some point and a 6.5er may need to be upgraded.

Depends if you got a WC lined up to use early. If you, no issues, if you don't, then you run the risk of your two lower priced strikers not firing whilst everyone else who has the higher priced assets taking a huge lead on you.

I've considered it but have still found a way to get Ibra and Aguero into my side and still be pleased with the midfield and defence. Ultimately I might move Ibra to Costa if Costa seems nailed and use the extra money to invest a bit more into midfield, but it'll still feel like I'm going into GW1 with two elite strikers.

As a Leeds fan, Cook is a very good player but certainly not an option in FPL. I think he scored 2 league goals for us over 2 seasons in a lower league, and doesn't chip in with many assists either. Gradel, on the other hand, regularly ripped defences apart for us!

Yeah, didn't explain that too well did I. I could cut and paste all the players, I suppose.

I just want to do a rollup on price to see how many players are at each price point.

Just noticed that Vardy has a wrist injury and Costa has a back injury.
These could send me back to the drawing board with my team.
        That's fairly annoying.

No aguero but I'm sure you're aware and are comfortable

Really strong midfield. Looking to play 3-5-2 or?

Like the caroll pick. If West Ham don't sign another striker he could be a good shout

              That's fine but very risky.

Perhaps the biggest problem with not owning aguero is not when he scores, but more so the impact on his value makes it so difficult to bring him in at a later stage. If he hits the ground running he could be 13.3m before you know it, and could

Real nice midfield, slight worry that Mourinho might give Rooney a bit of rope to hang himself with at the start of the season which may limit Mikhitaryan game time. Really trying to find an extra million to upgrade Deulofeu to Tadic, he is very good value imo

I think you a mile off on the Mikhitaryan he was one of JM first signings for a reason.
He will play deeper in midfield and rooney will play behind Zlatan.
JM has already said he does not see Rooney as an orthodox midfielder that was made very clear.
