Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Virgil van Dijk

Having arrived at Southampton last summer with a reputation as a goal scoring defender, after netting nine times in two seasons at Celtic, Virgil van Dijk managed a respectable three strikes in 34 Premier League appearances as Saints secured a sixth place finish.

The Dutch international, who cost Southampton £13 million, impressed in his first season in England, forming a strong centre-back partnership with Jose Fonte, and, having settled at St. Mary’s, could be set for an even more productive campaign this time around.

The 25-year-old is an imposing figure, standing at six foot four inches tall, and, as is the case with the majority of Dutch footballers, is very strong technically, with the central defender confident when dribbling the ball, and also able to initiate attacks through his wide range of passing.

The fact that Van Dijk was handed a new six-year contract in May certainly illustrates the club’s faith in the former Groningen defender, so he’ll be expected to continue his development as a player over the coming years.

Key Factors

  • Van Dijk’s attacking statistics last season were pretty impressive across the board, finishing fifth among defenders for both penalty box touches (71), and shots on target (nine). He ended the campaign joint-eighth among defenders for total goal attempts, with 29, the same number as Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann, who netted five times in 2015/16. The Dutchman is particularly dominant in the air, having won 158 headers last term, 36 more than any other defender. His aerial presence should continue to be crucial at both ends of the pitch, then, and with Dusan Tadic looking nailed on under new Saints boss Claude Puel, Van Dijk should benefit from strong set-piece delivery in the final third. It’s worth noting he’s already found the back of the net during pre-season, scoring in Southampton’s 2-1 win against FC Twente.
  • Despite the changes in management, Southampton have registered 15, 15 and 12 clean sheets over the past three seasons, providing Fantasy managers with a reliable source of defensive returns. The early signs under Puel appear positive in that regard, having only conceded one goal in four matches thus far during pre-season, so Van Dijk should continue to offer a dual threat at either end of the pitch.
  • After finishing last season with 130 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), joint-tenth among defenders, Van Dijk has once again been valued at 5.5. That’s the same price as fellow Saints defenders Fonte and Ryan Bertrand, while Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina, who look set to battle it out for the right-back position once again, are available at 5.0 and 4.5 respectively. The Dutchman’s superior goal threat makes him the standout option, with his ability to shoot from long distance, be it from open play or a free-kick, also an added string to his bow. That’s reflected by the former Celtic man currently having an ownership of 11.2% in FPL, more than both Fonte (9%) and Bertrand (4.4%).
  • Southampton face three very appealing home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks (WAT, SUN, SWA), affording Puel the perfect opportunity to get off to a strong start at St Mary’s. Although that is somewhat offset by the fact they also travel to both Man United and Arsenal, Van Dijk’s goal threat means he’s still more than capable of prevailing across those tricky pair of road trips.
  • While Van Dijk offers plenty of appeal due to his attacking threat and potential clean sheet points, the Dutch international also flourishes when it comes to the Bonus Point System (BPS). He gained 16 bonus points last term, fifth among defenders, and finished fourth at the back for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), making him a particularly strong option for those plum home fixtures in which Southampton have historically thrived in.

Too expensive at the back for a GW1-3 team?

    Foster
    Dann, VVD, Shaw
    Mahrez, Tadic, Ayew, Townsend
    Aguero, Kane, Gray

    Jaku, Naylor, Kone, Capoue

    Defensive rotation would be:

    GW1: WBA, WAT, bou
    GW2: MID, HUL, SOT
    GW3: SUN, BOU, hul

Wondering if it's better to rotate or just get 3 x expensy defenders from good defensive team with good fixtures all 3 weeks (something like Azpil, Terry Shaw) and downgrade one of the 4.5s to a 4.0?

I think Mahrez and Vardy will score similarly but Kane will comfortably outscore Hazard

That rotation looks lovely. But I still don't see the appeal in Souaré or Dann in this case. CPL are allergic to clean sheets, even against minnows, you'd be relying on his goal threat only.

Yeah that's a fair point. Perhaps Dann/Kone -> Azpil/4.0, playing Shaw & Azpil every week, VVD in 1&3 and Naylor in 2?

    Valdes (Jakupvic)
Stones Shaw Souare (Friend & Paredes)
Mahrez (V) Townsend Hazard Deulofeu (Leko)
    Gray Kun (C) Ibra

    (if Stones goes to City)

    Thoughts?
Bit tempted with Negredo instead of Gray as Mddls have great opening fixtures

Unfortunately I don't have the BPS data for every game last year to readjust the BAPs like I did when I readjusted Blind.

        141 + 11(goals) + 14(CS) = 166 in 31 games = 5.35pts per game. I'd take about 5 bonus points off though because midfielder's goal is worth 6 BPS less than forward's goal.

    "No Kante, no clean sheets."
Are we overlooking Leicester defenders in our teams to start off the season?

Leicester were the best defence from GW28 to GW38 in the 2014/15 season with 7 clean sheets and only 9 goals conceded.
This was largely with a central midfield partnership of Cambiasso and King.
Wasilewski and the attacking Schlupp played at full back for most games.

This season we are looking at a Drinkwater and Mendy/Amartey central midfield partnership and Simpson and Fuchs at fullback, hardly any worse than the players that finished the 2014/15 season.

We heard so often that their success last season was partly due to their team ethic, with Ranieri at the helm and Kante looking the only likely departure, there is no reason for that not to continue.

    Then there are the fixtures.
GW1 away to Hull, a team with only 13 first team players currently ready for selection for GW1.
GW2 at home to Arsenal, if you are going to keep a clean sheet against them, early in the season whilst their stars are still recovering from their Euro 2016/Copa America exploits may be your best opportunity.
GW3 against at home to a possibly Ayewless Swansea.
GW 4-7 see tough ties away to Manchester United and Liverpool however Burnley and Southamptons visits to the King Power could soften the blow.

Fuchs is that bit too expensive for me, however I am seriously considering one of Morgan or Simpson.

no kante no party. hes that good and he played so well for them i cant see them having such defensive stability without him. hes really the player of last year for me.

How can you explain them leaking goals from Aug-Jan with Kante in the side? No Kante no party means he should have stopped the leaks then.

They firmed up when Fuchs and Simpson came into the side, everyone thinks it's because of Kante but they must have slept through Aug-Jan.

Kante was class but it's such lazy thinking to say that they will collapse now, he played in the side that we all said couldn't keep clean sheets.

Bringing the two fullbacks in was the fine tuning that made it all click not Kante, someone mentioned Cambiasso above, great point, they thought he couldn't be replaced, he was.

Ben Yedder probably had a better record and was so much cheaper. The "experts" on twitter though laughed it off as he wasn't £20m+

No doubt he'll flourish under Sampaoli along with Vietto. €9m is a steal in today's market for one of the best & most consistent French strikers, who not to mention is only 25 years old & has scored 62 goals & 17 assists in 132 apps these last four season.

But Lacazette has unarguably been better in my view these last few seasons.

Last RMT. theres too much time between now and the season opener, its jarring switching my team everyday

    Hart

    Gabriel Azpilicueta Shaw Stones

    Mkhitaryan Hazard KDB

    Aguero Gray Negredo

Subs : Jakupovic Fletcher Leko Lenihan

i could have better strikers but im putting my money into my mid

    thoughts??

far too much money in the defence... having negredo and gray starting every week and with grey being a speedster coming back from a muscle just coming back from an injury surely carroll is a better option but i would look to upgrade one of them to someone of lukaku's standard..

    2. Ayew/tadic or

      Team looks good.

      Two X Top Defenders/sides

      Two X Top Midfielders

      Two X Top Strikers

Rotating the other spots, if you have Zlatan and Aguero, that's all you can do.
