Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Andre Gray

As evidenced by the success of Grant Holt, Rickie Lambert, Charlie Austin, Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo over the past few years, the promoted clubs can often provide us with budget forwards that far outdo their favourable price tags.

After bagging 23 goals and eight assists in Burnley’s Championship winning season, Andre Gray has the potential to be the next one off the conveyor belt.

Signed by Sean Dyche last summer for a club-record fee of around £9 million, Gray has followed a similar path to the likes of Austin and Vardy by working his way through the lower leagues to make it to the top-flight.

Having played a part in 43% of the Clarets’ goals on their way to the Championship title, he looks worthy of serious consideration for our three-man frontlines.

  • Gray has wasted no time in announcing himself to Fantasy managers over the summer period by scoring eight times, including a weekend hat-trick at Rangers. The Premier League’s form forward over pre-season, he’s been both consistent and explosive and found the net in all five of his appearances. Despite a kind 6.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s shaping up to be a decent differential and is owned by just 10% so far.
  • Last season, Gray averaged a shot every 31.3 minutes, which was slightly better than Southampton’s Shane Long (34.9), who is currently the highest owned forward (15.2%) priced 6.5 and under in FPL. Elsewhere in this bracket, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson was less impressive in this regard, averaging a shot every 48.2 minutes last term, with West Ham’s Andy Carroll (27.6), Southampton’s Charlie Austin (29.1) and Middlesbrough’s Alvaro Negredo (29.4) the quickest.
  • Gray also impresses in terms of goal conversion. He netted an eye-catching 21.1%of his opportunities in the previous season – superior to the similarly priced Carroll (16.1%), Long (15.6%) and Austin (12.5%), although Wilson did lead the way, with an impressive goal conversion rate of 29.4% last term, albeit from just 13 appearances. His prospects would be boosted if he’s afforded spot-kicks ahead of team-mate Sam Vokes – Gray took five last term, scoring four, though Vokes scored three when his strike partner was on the pitch. Certainly, this would justify the extra outlay comapred to Vokes’ cost of 6.0.
  • Compared to forwards at the other promoted clubs, Gray’s appeal is heightened by a security of starts – Dyche tends to favour consistency of selection and is unlikely to chop and change unnecessarily. The same can’t be said for either Middlesbrough or Hull right now. Aitor Karanka operates with a 4-2-3-1 formation, so while Negredo looks to be the first-choice striker, Jordan Rhodes seems likely to steal minutes off the Spaniard given the ‘Boro manager’s penchant for rotation. With last term’s top scorer Abel Hernandez linked with a move away, few FPL bosses will be prepared to invest in Hull’s attack right now until some sense of stability is restored.
  • Gray’s prospects are boosted by the fact that Burnley are the only team facing four home matches in the first six Gameweeks (SWA, LIV, che, HUL, lei, WAT), due to their Gameweek 2 fixture against Liverpool being reversed as the Reds put the finishing touches to their new Main Stand. The former Brentford forward looks to have the ideal platform to hit the ground running, then, with the fixtures against Swansea, Hull and Watford in particular looking very favourable.

It's a good rotation on paper but do you see Palace providing clean sheet points. Perhaps save points.

Another rotation is, albeit more expensive, Southampton and West Ham.

No European distractions, good squad and a manager who will make them hard to beat again.

I reckon they might have the best defence in the league at the end of it too with Kante (and possibly Matic) shielding it.

Alright. In fact, it's not your choice of going with one forward. It's that Payet may miss the start of the season and half your defence are not nailed-on (agree with KoL), and the rest of it is kinda sheet. Personally, I want guaranteed starters in defence, and if I went with just 1 striker, I'd want my defence to be really good. Yours doesn't look good to me at all.

But you seem to be convinced otherwise, and if you're right about that defence, then this can be a good team.

The midfield looks like it could be very strong over the whole season, just not probably the best to start with.

Any particular position or price? WhoScored are doing the ratings & Starman this season so worth having a look at who does well with them.

Ideally a good MID - set on a back 5 & front 2/3, just need 1-2 good differential midfielders to choose from.

Glad that's the case! Used to enjoy betting on whoscored highest rated player so that's definitely a lot better.

Sorry for the long reply I've been caught up in some work.

First XI looks good but your subs are lacking. Could work out well but if a couple of your players don't play the first games of the season for whatever reason you could be losing a lot of points and having to make a lot of transfers.

No point spending 6.5m on Noble. (I'm a West Ham fan).

Fantastic if we get a penalty every game but it won't happen, open goals from him are a rarity. If you want budget West Ham I would definitely think Feghouli is worth a shout. At 5.5m he is a risk worth taking and free's up 1.0m elsewhere. Could be spent on upgrading Fletcher to Ibe?

Is £34.0 too much to spend on my defence? The last few seasons I've tried to scrimp and save there and it's cost me points over the season Am I overspending this year?

GK-If going with a premium keeper then you'll want to play him every week so your 2nd keeper needs to only be 4m

KDB looks over priced + not sure I'd start doubling up on any team until we see how they play/set-up

Valencia wont get 3 x assists every game-see if he plays IN CS first

Dier won't score well in fpl as he's a defensive MID

Is Deul nailed? Eliminate too many risks as you want a solid X1 guaranteed to play to kick start you off

    Afternoon all,

Long time no see. Got back into FPL at the back end of last season and actually have some reason to play it next season.

Haven't seen many around here with De Gea in their team? At 5.5m he seems an absoulte steal where previously premium goalkeepers came in at 6 or above (If I remember rightly). With Mourinho in charge they'll keep the same defensive solidarity they had last year. I've also just realised I've written this like a work email. Probably because I'm at work...

    Kind regards,

    Greg

Defenders are pretty cheap as well, though. Shaw, Terry, Baines all 5.5.

The new bonus system seems to benefit cheaper keepers (who make more saves), too.

Agreed, Baines looks a steal at 5.5. Especially if Lukaku wants to leave and free up penalties.

You raise a good point there. It's somehow very easy for everyone (myself included) to ignore his returns the last two seasons. If he replicates either, he more than justifies his current pricetag.

Price is a good signal for the quality of a player. The higher the price the more you would expect them to score.

      4. Ludo
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

One of those examples of unconscious bias at play. A higher price would mean people put a higher value on him.

People would be saying that if Ibrahimovic explodes, it's an easy downgrade to him from Kane, whereas with their prices as they are, Ibra feels safer to a fantasy manager, simply because he's more expensive.

          Yeah you might be right.

I ignored Kane the start of last season and doing same this time around. Once he starts scoring though I'll give him serious consideration.
