Pre-Season

Sleeper – Cesc Fabregas

After three successful seasons with Barcelona, Cesc Fabregas’ return to the top-flight proved pivotal to Chelsea’s 2014/15 title-winning campaign.

Snapped up by Jose Mourinho after former club Arsenal opted against reacquiring him, the playmaker delivered three goals and 19 assists in his first year at Stamford Bridge to leap back into Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers’ plans.

Chelsea’s disastrous defence of their Premier League crown in 2015/16 forced a reassessment.

The Blues simply failed to rediscover their cutting edge and despite replacing Mourinho with Guus Hiddink midway through the season, their big-hitters proved a bitter disappointment.

Having earned just two assists in the first 20 Gameweeks, Fabregas racked up five goals and as many assists in the final 18 rounds of fixtures but it was a case of too little, too late for the Spaniard.

Although he ultimately collected just 133 points, Fabregas was still only two points off Willian as the top-scoring Chelsea player in FPL and comfortably bettered Eden Hazard’s tally of 104 points, despite the latter’s late run of four goals in the final five fixtures.

The Prospects

Last term aside, there can be no doubting Fabregas’ potential as a consistent Fantasy asset.

Indeed, the 2015/16 campaign was the first time in his last seven active Premier League seasons that the playmaker has failed to provide at least ten assists.

Even when adding in last term’s tally, Fabregas has racked up 98 assists over that time frame – that’s an average of 14 assists per season.

Considering that reliable output, Fabregas’ price of 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League may well prove to be a bargain if he can remain a regular starter under new manager Antonio Conte.

With N’Golo Kante on board, Conte’s preferred formation is likely to dictate how we assess the Chelsea midfield. Conte had utilised a 4-2-4 in pre-season but switched to 4-1-4-1 for the Frenchman’s debut against AC Milan, with the new boy screening in front of the Blues’ back-four.

The 4-2-4 is perhaps the less enticing of the two. Kante certainly looks nailed on, which would leave Fabregas, Oscar and Nemanja Matic battling it out for the role alongside the former Leicester ball-winner.

Clearly, the latter formation offers Conte more scope with his central midfield selection and could allow Fabregas to benefit from Kante’s energy, affording him the freedom to dictate matters in the centre of the park.

Identically priced to the Spain international, Oscar is another contender who could also play his way into consideration. The Brazilian netted twice against Milan in midweek – including a converted spot-kick whilst Hazard was on the pitch – and, having started just 20 times last term, will be looking to establish himself as a viable option under the Italian.

Chelsea’s lack of European commitments – due to their tenth placed finish in 2015/16 – also limits the likelihood of rest and rotation this time around and affords Conte the chance to make his stamp on the Blues’ starting XI.

At present, Hazard’s two goals as a sub in a recent friendly against Real Madrid suggests the Belgian is gearing up for a revival under Conte. Should he be utilised through the middle – as he was against Madrid – there’s every chance that the former Lille man will emerge as the most enticing option at Stamford Bridge.

Nonetheless, Fabregas – who is currently owned by 8% of FPL managers – cannot be overlooked. Granted, he doesn’t have the same explosive potential as Hazard but, if he secures a place in Conte’s first XI plans, history suggests he could make a mockery of that very kind price tag.

      Cech doesn't have great fixtures.
Sagna faces competition, so may not start.
Dier is DM, not many points to be found.
Antonio is reverse OOP at rb so far in pre-season, would avoid.

    Butland/ Jakupovic

    Friend/ Terry/ VVD/ McCauley/ B.Smith

    Hazard/ Sanchez/ Ayew/ Deulofeu/ Ibe

    Gray/ Aguero/ Negrado

Suprised by the lack of interest in Alexis Sanchez, ownership is only at 3.5%, ok yes he is expensive at 11mil but its looking likely he will start the season as Arsenals main man up top.

Wenger is yet to sign a decent centre forward and Giroud will be rested as not yet match fit. If Sanchez is playing as a forward and classed as a midfielder seems a no brainer to me

he's going to be starting the season as a centre forward due to Wenger's stupidity in the transfer market and Giroud's not yet match fit having started for France in the euro finals??

Unless Ayew moves to WHM idk, if I want anything to do w/ Swans & their opening fixtures.

More, Ibra will be hard to justify (well, anyone who costs that much) his price unless we captain him enough.

Penny for your thoughts on this lot:

    Heaton-Foster
    Van Dijk-Kone-Funes Mori-Shaw-Keane
    Firmino-Ayew-Lamela-Deulofeu-Redmond
    Aguero-Sturridge-Gray

0.5 ITB. Most recent tinker switched Ibra for Sturridge, but I'm not committed to either. Or that midfield, which I'm worried is now too much of a muchness (all 6.0-8.5m)

Of the 5 or 5.5m midfielders I've rotated through I think I'm most intrigued by Ward-Prowse and Gradel. Can't help but feel like I'm trying to be too clever.

Too much spent upfront, downgrade Studge and get one big hitter in midfield for alternative captain choice.

Your 5th mid is 6.0 and your 3rd striker is 6.5. That's a lot of money on the bench each week. That being said, I really like the team. It's different but in a good way. Personally think Firmino + Sturridge might be a bit much. Then again it might not to be.

Downgrade KDB as you already have Kun, downgrade Payet as he wont probably start GW1, upgrade Neg to Roonpig, and upgrade defence

Payet might not play GW1 also

        Thanks guys

Musa looked good gotta be honest. Not sure Nolito is nailed on TBH so if I was to downgrade KDB it would probably be for Mkhi or Martial (going to be scouting in the charity shield on Sunday).

Trying to fit Aguero, Sanchez + another 2 big hitters in midfield without affecting my defence too much.. How does this look?

    Foster (Jaku)
    Baines - Terry - VVD (Kone) (4.0)
Sanchez - Mahrez - Martial - Bojan (Fletcher)
    Aguero - Gray - Rondon

I think it's better to affect your defence than your strikers

    A) Unproven winger in attacking team with a year of Prem experience

    B) Unproven winger in defensive team with no Prem experience

    Hmm... Everyone's going for B...

Debating budget defenders at the 4.5 mark. Seems Soure is a popular pick with Palace start, but looking for a nice rotation partner. Here is who I am looking at:

Kone: With Moyes in at Sunderland, you have to expect some tight and tidy defending. Kone looked great at the end of last year on set pieces, so is leading the race for now.

Pieters: Stoke kept 10 clean sheets last year, but not sure I trust Hughes to play defensively minded. None of their back line have much attacking threat either, so not sold on this option.

Friend: Middleborough had the best defense in the Championship, but this isn't the Championship. We have seen a few promoted sides play well defensively and the fixtures aren't bad, but still this is an outside pick for now.

Naughton: Did quite well for me at time last year, but the open fixtures are a mixed bag. Also not sure about Swansea's prospects or their style of play under the new manager.

I might have considered Evans, but I have Foster and there is no need to double up on anyone at this stage.

Lots to learn from the community shield -

Will musa start, will he play up front ?
Will Chilwell get another start? If he does he really is worth considering if your thinking of wildcarding early.

Will valencia start? Been very good so far in preseason

Who will look best value for one iut of martial/rooney/mkhi
