Captains

The Captain Poll – Gameweek 2

We’ve now launched our latest captain poll to canvas your opinion on the likely favourites and differential options for the armband in Gameweek 2.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them in your squad.

With a goal and maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus points each in Gameweek 1, Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero (13.0) and Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.5) are set to dominate the captaincy poll once again, particularly as the pair are FPL’s  most owned attacking players.

A home tie against Southampton may prompt many to favour the 42.9% owned Swede over Aguero, who sits in 45.9% of squads. However, Manchester United could struggle to break down a Southampton side that is unlikely to give away too many chances. In Gameweek 1 no team conceded fewer attempts in the box than the south coast side.

While Aguero has a tricky away clash against Stoke, he could still be in line to prosper as the Potters will be without first choice goalkeeper Jack Butland due to injury. Out of Aguero’s 24 goals last term, a respectable nine came on the road.

Ordinarily a home clash against Crystal Palace ought to place Tottenham’s Harry Kane (11.0) at the summit of our captain poll, but with the 19.6% owned England striker failing to register a single goal attempt in Gameweek 1’s away tie with Everton, there’s a need to show caution.

Saturday’s blank means that Kane has scored just once in the last 10 league fixtures where Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele has been missing. The influential Belgian will once again be absent this weekend due to suspension.

For those looking for a differential armband pick, two of Gameweek 1’s goal scoring mid-price strikers may be factors to consider.

With a strike against Manchester City last weekend, Jermain Defoe (7.0), who is owned by only 5.4% of FPL managers, will be in confident mood when Middlesbrough visit the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

West Brom’s Salomon Rondon will be similarly buoyed when Everton visit The Hawthorns, following the 2.6% owned forward’s winning strike against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

West Ham and Liverpool also offer Fantasy managers with a raft of potential high scoring captaincy options in Gameweek 2. With three goals between them in Liverpool’s Sunday lunchtime victory over Arsenal, Sadio Mane (9.0) and Philippe Coutinho (8.0), who has been drafted in by 68,000+ managers this week to take his ownership to 17.1%, offer plenty of potential when they visit Burnley. In terms of FPL ownership, Mane is just behind the Brazilian with 16%.

While their team-mate Robert Firmino (8.5) failed to deliver attacking returns at the Emirates, his strong underlying statistics in the Arsenal match suggest he, too, could reward his 11% ownership.

A favourable home tie against Bournemouth is likely to attract interest in West Ham’s assets, particularly Dimitri Payet (9.5), who scored nine times and assisted a further 13 goals last season. His suitors will be paying close attention to the 28.7%-owned midfielder’s performance at Stamford Bridge tonight.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

I don't care if its knee jerk or not, Coutinho and Negredo are in form and facing 2 of the weaker teams (imo) so i'm getting them for a -4 hit while the hits don't matter as much and before the price rises.

Knee jerky maybe, but against Burnley & Sunderland I think they will score well and make up the 4 points easily.

If I keep hold of Townsend & Vardy & they blank I will be livid, I can't see either of them scoring based on last weeks performance either.

Am picking while peoples confidence is high!

Coutinho is a Streaky player. Out of his 8 goals last season 7 came in gw11,12,13 and gw31,32,34.. Could be a nice time to get him

Think Mane stretching the play this seaosn allows him to get into more goal scoring positions

Instead of being labelled as a casual i think he's a good option alongside Mane and Firmino. for those getting him

i could be punting on him as i have exact cash to do Vardy/Mahrez --> Ibra Coutinho(-4)

Mahrez didnt had the best game and head could be elsewhere. This would affect vardy's output too.

the pair may not justify their hefty price tags this year

I would like to bring in Redmond. Assuming I keep Hazard, I have four options:

    A) Alli to Redmond
    B) Tadic to Redmond
    C) Heaton and Ramirez to Jaku and Redmond (I have Foster)
    D) Alli and Capoue to Lamela and Redmond

    Option A seems drastic.
I'm loathe to do B as Tadic was so good; even if Redmond is better value.
C isn't appealing because I think Ramirez is a good value pick in his own right.
D would create a benching headache.

At the minute I think I'm going to wait until next week (if price rises will allow), and then do C.

Which do you think is best, if any?

C Burnley are penny dreadful this season, & you may want to check if Bur actually rotate properly against a WBA team who get most of their Clean sheets AWAY not home & Redmond is OOP.

So Coutinho and Negredo going to rise in price tonight by the looks of it?

As a Liverpool fan I'm giving Couthino a miss, amazing player but Firmino will get more goals over the season.

However, Gray is concerning me... Made my decision to have him in purely on analysis from this website. Literally never seen him play!

Is it worth doing a transfer to Negredo? Better fixtures etc..

    1. Obligatory
      • 11 Years

I think you needn't worry about rushing a transfer to Negredo. There are other options in that price bracket who look decent. If Negredo was standing head and shoulders above everyone else I'd go for it, but as it stands I'd stick with Gray for the minute until we've got more data.

True, I'm more concerned about missing price rises to be honest.

Sticking with Gray this week, Liverpool's defence are shocking with Moreno so I can seem them scoring at least one.

        Hopefully firmino (c) Hatrick

You'll probably find opinion is split, I am sticking. Ask yourself which will hurt you more:

      a) keeping and him blanking again while Coutinho scores
      b) ditching and Firmino taking his turn to get in the goals

    Long > Defoe or Negredo?

      Negredo looks the goods

Keep personally, but if you have to I'd say Negredo.

Trade Alli, Eriksen, Tadic or Townsend? All had putrid weeks. Thoughts on who's a good option to trade in in the midfield?

      Alli, since double Spurs.

Townsend surely. The others have decent stats and games coming up.

Ibra has 72 (combined goal+assists) in 117 champions league games

That record alone is enough to justify having him in our team (if ur not convinced with the tremendous french or serie A numbers)

Kane owners! 0 shots on target and dropping deep like a CM doesn't really inspire confidence. Surely holding on is the right thing to do with Palace and other good fixtures coming up.

I don't have him but if I did and assess after the weekend game, give him at least 2 games - can't have expected too much from Everton away

Would be massively grateful if someone could rate my team and suggest any transfers (if any):

    Foster
    Shaw Azpilicueta Stones Dawson
    Mahrez Barkley Hazard Feghouli
    Aguero (c) Gray

    Subs: Heaton Friend Townsend Long

Not bad, no pressing issues yet, so might be wise to just save the transfer. Would be good to see how Feghouli does this evening.

Stick for now, although I'd be tempted to play Townsend over Stones

Dawson to McAuley and Long to Defoe

Pre season I would've suggested upgrading a forward with funds from downgrading Barkley/Townsend and defence but nothing drastic.

Right now I'd say it looks decent and to save your transfer until you learn more next gameweek.

GW1 can be always be a red herring, especially with the transfer window still open.

Brilliant, thanks for your responses. I think I'll save the transfer then make two in GW2 if any obvious trends appear. Currently considering Long -> Negredo

Having the ability to have a "mini wildcard" with 2 FT + 1 hit is always the best choice if you have a fully fit squad to choose from

I agree, although I suppose it's still a bit drastic after two weeks. I remember everyone flocking to Gomis last season after a few goals haha.

So should I play Feghouli vs Bournemouth? Worried he'll just be brought on for the last ten mins

I guess the Tekkers move will happen very soon now as Money from Bolasie comes in.

Yum yum 15+ goals for a mere 7.5....

That's the move I'm waiting for, although it probably means losing Ibra so if they could wait until deadline day that would be fine with me
