Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 1

Next up, we take a scour round the Premier League Treatment Rooms, keeping you up-to-date with the latest injury news after Gameweek 1 came to an end last night. Tottenham’s first-choice stopper is sidelined for a month, whilst Arsenal and West Ham’s midfields are causing concern.

Aaron Ramsey

Arsene Wenger confirmed post-match than Aaron Ramsey had suffered a hamstring injury in Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool.

The Welshman was forced off on 61 minutes to be replaced by Santi Cazorla. The setback marks the fourth time in less than two years that Ramsey has suffered hamstring problems – a known area of weakness for the Welshman which has previously kept his sidelined for over a month at the end of last season.

Ramsey was one of four players making a return following Euro 16 action but the only one to start the match having been fast-tracked for a return, along with Alexis Sanchez following his Copa America exploits. Olivier Giroud, Mesut Ozil and Laurent Koscielny were not risked against Liverpool.

Wenger clearly regrets rushing Ramsey back into action.

“I pushed Ramsey in and he got injured. It’s a very difficult situation to sort out because the players come back late because of the Euros and, on top of that, you play them and they get injured. If you don’t play them you miss them…He [Ramsey] has a hamstring injury but I don’t know how bad it is yet.”

Scans on the injury will tell us more on the prognosis but Ramsey’s previous history would suggest that this will again rule him out for a number of weeks – possibly a full month or more.

Alex Iwobi

Wenger must also check on the availability of Alex Iwobi who started the season on the left of Arsenal’s 4-2-3-1 but was forced off on 59 minutes to be replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Gunners’ boss has confirmed a thigh injury for the 20-year-old and, like Ramsey, we have no definitive prognosis.

Wenger suggested that he is preparing to take stock ahead of the demanding trip to Leicester City in Gameweek 2 – assessing his injured parties and the likes of Giroud, Ozil and Koscielny who will all be expected to return to contention.

“We have to be ready next week because we go to Leicester. But we’ll see first what we can do with the players who are preparing at the moment and how many players are injured today. Can they recover for next week? I don’t know.”

Philippe Coutinho

The Brazilian’s quite brilliant display at the Emirates was somewhat tempered when he limped from the field on 70 minutes, raising concerns that he may have suffered damage to his hamstring.

However, as suspected, this has been confirmed as cramp by manager Jurgen Klopp, who dismissed any doubts that Coutinho had suffered an injury.

Marten de Roon

Middlesbrough’s Dutch midfield enforcer was withdrawn after just 22 minutes of his Premier League debut after suffering a muscle injury against Stoke City.

Already without Grant Leadbitter in the engine room, Aitor Karanka seems resigned to be without their new capture from Atalanta for up to a month.

“I think it’s a muscle injury and sometimes it’s three weeks, sometimes four weeks, sometimes two. I need to keep calm with him. It was his first game, he was wanting to show everybody he was ready to play, and sometimes the emotions are wrong. I hope he’s with us as soon as possible, but without him when Adam Forshaw came onto the pitch, we played in the same way.”

As suggested, Karanka looks set to turn to Adam Forshaw (4.5) to fill the void alongside Adam Clayton for their run of three away games in four (sun, wba, CPL, eve).

Jack Butland

A victim of a training ground injury on the eve of the new season, Jack Butland was ruled out of Stoke City’s opener at Middlesbrough with an ankle complaint.

The keeper was initially expected to be sidelined for around three weeks, thus returning in mid-September, but earlier today, the Potters’ assistant boss Mark Bowen surprisingly revealed that Butland has an outside chance of recovering in time for this weekend’s home encounter with Man City:

“Although Jack’s not been training, he has been out there in the sunshine today with a smile on his face, which is a good indication. He tells me he’s feeling fine and depending how the rest of the week goes, there may even be a chance of him being available for Saturday, but I say that cautiously. We’ve got three or four days before then, so if it keeps improving the way it is…He’s of a mind to rest up for the next day or so and then start doing a little bit. The diagnosis he was telling me was there was a bit of scar tissue that’s come away (in the ankle) and caused a hell of a lot of pain. But he’s had a jab and hopefully it’s full steam ahead”

Shay Given (4.5) started in goal on Teesside but now looks set to return to the bench if Butland proves his fitness in time. With clashes against City, Everton and Spurs in the next three, Mark Hughes’ men are off our radars currently anyway but enjoy a significant upturn in fixtures from Gameweek 5 onwards, which could also promote first-choice left-back Erik Pieters (4.5) in our reckoning.

Hugo Lloris

Forced off after 35 minutes of Spurs’ draw at Goodison, Hugo Lloris is set to be sidelined “for around four weeks”, according to the club’s official website earlier today.

This should afford Michel Vorm (5.0) a run of starts against Palace, Liverpool and Stoke, with Lloris also potentially missing the Gameweek 5 home clash against Sunderland on September 18.

Spending on a short-term stopper is something of a sideways move, though and, at a cost of 5.5, Kyle Walker could be worth the extra outlay – he produced more key passes than any defender last week and bagged an assist and single bonus point in the Everton stalemate.

Andre Ayew & Sofiane Feghouli

Slaven Bilic was left reeling after club record signing Andre Ayew was forced off during the first-half of last night’s 2-1 loss to Chelsea. The Hammers boss also went on to explain why another new signing, Sofiane Feghouli, failed to take part:

“Ayew has a thigh injury. He told me it is not a big one, but you never know and he will have a scan on Tuesday and we have to wait for the result of the scan to know how long he will be out. Feghouli picked up something against Juventus which we didn’t think was an injury and he trained for a week, but he missed tonight because he is injured.”

Regardless of the pair’s availability, it seems likely that Bilic will unleash Dimitri Payet from the start against Bournemouth on Sunday as he looks to recover from the Stamford Bridge defeat.

West Ham are already without the injured Manuel Lanzini and should one or both of Ayew and Feghouli fail to make it, Bilic may even consider moving Michail Antonio to the right wing berth after he endured a torrid time against Eden Hazard as a right-back last night.

Replaced by Sam Byram before the hour-mark, Antonio continues to struggle with defensive duties and a return to attack would resurrect his Fantasy potential after last term’s eight goals and seven assists.

    Good evening!
Keep this team or WC to another? Save 1FT doing nothing? 0 ITB.
    Valdes, Jakupovic
    Shaw, Friend, McAuley, Stones, Amat
    Hazard, Redmond, Firminho, Eriksen, Feghouli
    Aguero, Vardy, Gray

    Or WC to this:
    Valdes, Foster
    Azpili, Valencia, Baines, Kingsley, McAuley
    Coutinho, Willian, Lamela, Ramirez, Redmond
    Zlatan, Carroll, Aguero

An option is also taking a hit and change Eriksen/Vardy to Lamela/Zlatan.

I think Zlatan looked sharper against BOU than LEI in CS-game, and not having him vs SOU and hul seems extremely dangerous. All replies are welcomed.

    Thanks a lot.

Don't WC in GW1 - your team is pretty decent and will be fine with a couple of small changes. Not sure there's anyone I'd be dumping this week from your team, though freeing up money to get Zlatan for Vardy would be ok (with a free transfer)

Doesn't seem like much interest in Cazorla. Only me thinking he will now start, be nailed on as he always was before (now captain) and then be on pens too.

He used to be a 9.0-9.5 type at the start. 7.5 could be very good value

A great short term option but you are kidding yourself if you think he is nailed when Ozil is back.

          Things are different now mate.

Competing for 2 spots there is:
          Xhaka
          Ramsey
          Elneny
          Coquelin
          Cazorla
          Wilshere

          Cazorla is nowhere near nailed.

I'd expect a 4141 and probably caz to be in the 4 with ozil Sanchez and another. With one of xhaka/coq/elnemy behind them

Not sure why Wenger would suddenly switch to a 4141. Just because you think that would be better doesn't mean it's to be expected. Wenger is a stubborn character

2014-15 he played more than ozil and Sanchez. Was only injury last year that stopped his regular spot

Irrelevant. It was a bad injury that probably means he will never be the same player as much as I hate to say it.

And now we have a plethora of options.

It must be a bit relevant
Especially when he's made 2 goals in half an hour already. Wenger loves him.

He turns 32 later this year. What happened before his injury is pretty irrelevant imo. It sounds like you think Wenger is going to do everything he can just to accommodate Caz.

Caz didn't even start the first game with the Euro guys still out. He is clearly not nailed.

Maybe. But he hadn't played ina year. Thats like saying payet isnt nailed cause he wasn't fit to start. Wenger imo will accommodate him as he always did before and as he is now captain

What?? How is that at all similar? Payet was recovering from the Euros. Cazorla played most of pre season.

Arteta was announced captain for the 2014/15 season. He played 7 PL games that season. Enough said.

"In August 2012, Vermaelen was announced as Arsenal's new captain, replacing Robin van Persie upon his departure to Manchester United."

"Vermaelen's performances forced Arsène Wenger to drop him for the pivotal Champions League game against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. Arsenal won 0–2, although it was not enough to progress to the next round through aggregate, but they were the first team to prevent Bayern from scoring that season, thanks to an assured performance from the defence and reserve goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański.[27] Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny continued to partner each other at centre-back for the following games."

Is Watson out for Capoue this week worth it to catch the price changes, or better to keep my FT? Current team is below - worried about Watson falling and Capoue rising.

    B) Stones (STK A)
    C) Friend (SUN A)

Is Hazard essential? Have Oscar at the moment and went top heavy instead, but he played far too deep for my liking.

Is this worth a 4pt hit?

    Oscar > Hazard
    Vardy > Negredo/other 6.5m

    1. Hazard for Ballon D'or

Hazard looked so dangerous but imo I thought we were just as dangerous down the right side, if you have Willian he could be as good, Costa not getting taken off makes him seem a far better option then he did at the start of the season

Zlatan is not yet a bandwagon for me. If he goes up 0.1, Ill get him at 11.6, no big deal. currently considering longer term a top 3 of lukaku, aguero and vardy/kane/some 6.5 unless zlatan explodes.

so in past seasons i never tried chasing price rises early on, choosing to have faith in my initial selections. could i get the best of both worlds with swapping fletcher out for capoue? can someone who's used this tactic in the past help me out?

    Good evening!

Currently my team looks like this.

    Forster, Foster
    Shaw, Coleman, Stones, Friend, Koné
    Martial, Oscar, Redmond, Ramirez, Capoue
    Agüero, Vardy, Gray

It gave me 57 points this first gameweek. I have £3.0 in the bank.

I would like to do three transfers.

    A) Vardy to Ibrahimovic
    B) Oscar to Hazard
    C) Coleman (inj.) to someone

Ideally I would like to get in Azpilicueta for Coleman but for that I am £1.5 short. However, in the long run I would like to have Firmino instead of Martial. If I also downgrade Forster to, say, Heaton I can have the following team.

    HEATON, Foster
    Shaw, AZPILICUETA, Stones, Friend, Koné
    FIRMINO, HAZARD, Redmond, Ramirez, Capoue
    Agüero, IBRAHIMOVIC, Gray

This obviously requires the use of wildcard – but that feels a bit rushed. The problem is that this team has the exact value of £100.0 so this is not achievable if Hazard and/or Ibrahimovic increase in price.

If I used the wildcard, I would also consider changing Shaw to Valencia and Gray to some other £6.5 forward.

Any advice is highly appreciated! Thanks,

Are you trying to get a team that looks like this?
      Mignolet (Jakupovic)

Shaw - Amat - Evans - Stones (Matip)

Mahrez - Hazard - Redmond - Lamela (Capoue)

      Ibrahimovic - Aguero (Barrow

86 points in gameweek 1 or are you set on the tam layed above

        Thank you for the reply!

Well, I would like to have Stones, a United defender, Hazard, Redmond, Capoue, Ibrahimovic and Agüero! Evans is a good alternative as well! Not sure about the Liverpool defence, however, I think that first and foremost their attackers will be good options onwards!

Is that your team? 86 points is a great score!

No need to WC...honestly that team seems good to go still (colemans injury aside). Save the FT!

      • 11 Years
      7 years, 9 months ago

I think it's still too early to WC. Your team is pretty good and you never know what is going to happen over the next few weeks. All of those are luxury transfers rather than emergency due to injury or suspension issues. Make one now and then assess. It's unlikely there will be major movements in price for ibra or hazard yet

        • 8 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

Thank you for the reply, Doggg!

I think I might settle with doing Vardy to Ibrahimovic this gameweek, before Ibra’s price rises. Hopefully Hazard will stay at £10.0 till next week, so that I can consider getting him then.

Sound plan, you think? How’s your team, by the way?

Hows my team for gameweek 2? Mignolet (Jakupovic)

Shaw - Amat - Evans - Stones (Matip)

Mahrez - Hazard - Redmond - Lamela (Capoue)

Ibrahimovic - Aguero (Barrow) Same team as gameweek one ended up with 86 points which is 529th in world! Still got my transfer for the week, should i start team like this or should I sub someone on or off or change my formation. Was also wondering if Matip should be sold if he isnt going to start this season?

They are a very aggressive team who are well up for it so I am a tad bit worried one of our best players might get injured. 🙁
