Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 2 – The Weak

After breaking down those sides with the most favourable fixtures over the next six Gameweeks yesterday, our focus now shifts to those teams who could find the going tough over the coming period.

Southampton

(mun, SUN, ars, SWA, whm, lei)

Saints got off to an unconvincing start against Watford under new boss Claude Puel and could struggle over the next month or so, with four testing away trips at Man United, Arsenal, West Ham and Leicester.

Having failed to keep out the Hornets, Southampton will come up against the two clubs that created the most big chances (four) among all 20 teams on the opening weekend – United and Leicester. Arsenal will be able to call upon Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud for the Gameweek 4 clash, while although West Ham only managed four shots inside the box against Chelsea, the second lowest total last weekend, they should be far more dangerous on home soil, with Dimitri Payet back in the starting XI.

It’s hard to be hopeful of any clean sheets in those matches, then, although in the short-term, the home clashes against Sunderland and Swansea are pretty favourable, and may persuade some to stick with the likes of Virgil van Dijk for a little while longer.

From an attacking point of view, Leicester and United may again provide the toughest opposition, given they were among seven clubs who didn’t allow any big chances against them in Gameweek 1. Arsenal’s backline should also boast a fully fit Laurent Koscielny by the time the two teams meet, so while Nathan Redmond, Dusan Tadic and Shane Long should be able to tick over with those two kind home fixtures, the pair may deliver their fair share of two-pointers, too.

Swansea

(HUL, lei, CHE, sot, MCI, LIV)

The Welsh side got off to a solid start, beating Burnley 1-0, but have a horrid run of fixtures following Saturday’s favourable home fixture against Hull.

They do face a further three home matches over the next six Gameweeks, but the quality of opposition – Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool – visiting the Liberty Stadium could hardly be stronger. All three got off to winning starts, and while the Swans may fancy their chances of scoring in front of their own fans, the potential for goals looks to be very limited. Fernando Llorente and Borja Baston could share playing time up front, further lessening their appeal.

Keeping things tight at the opposite end will also be a huge task, with all six of their next opponents ranked in the top eight for total goal attempts on the opening weekend. The match against Hull appears the main hope in terms of adding to their opening day shut-out.

Jordi Amat’s owners may be happy to hold given his 4.0 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but now may not be the time to invest in the Swansea rearguard, while there should be plenty of mid-price midfield options that offer greater potential than the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson over the coming period.

Burnley

(LIV, che, HUL, lei, WAT, ARS)

Sean Dyche’s men do have four home matches over the next six Gameweeks, but with Liverpool and Arsenal two of the sides heading to Turf Moor, and with trips to Chelsea and Leicester to also bear in mind, the upside for Burnley Fantasy assets may be limited over the coming weeks.

The Clarets failed to get on the scoresheet against Swansea, and while Liverpool and Arsenal showed defensive fragilities on Sunday, it’s hard to see Andre Gray getting too much joy in those matches, as well as in those two tricky away fixtures.

The match-ups against Hull and Watford may see some keep faith in the former Brentford striker, though. The Tigers conceded four big chances in their season opener, more than any other side, while the Hornets allowed the joint-second highest number of shots inside the box (11) against Southampton.

Defensively, the outlook is probably even gloomier, given Swansea managed 17 goal attempts on Saturday, the third highest number in Gameweek 1. With far tougher match-ups to come, barring the clash against Hull, popular pre-season budget options such as Tom Heaton may offer little clean sheet potential, although the former Man United stopper can be relied upon for saves, making seven against the Welsh outfit.

Also be wary of…

Man City
Pep Guardiola’s men only offer two home fixtures (WHM, BOU) in the next six, while they also face tough trips to neighbours United and Tottenham during that period, along with matches at Stoke and Swansea.

The early signs under the Spaniard are encouraging, but his side still look a work in progress, particularly at the back, where United and Spurs in particular may be able to find some joy. With only the matches against Bournemouth and Swansea appearing reasonably favourable from a defensive standpoint, expectations for John Stones and the City backline perhaps shouldn’t be too high over the coming period.

It’s hard to suggest any fixture is particularly difficult for Sergio Aguero and the Argentine should flourish regardless. Nonetheless, it may prove sensible to limit our City attacking coverage to the former Atletico Madrid striker, with other premium midfield options having far more favourable schedules.

Leicester City
The champions got off to a rough start at newly promoted Hull, and while they face four home matches in the next six (ARS, SWA, liv, BUR, mun, SOT), their key Fantasy assets may struggle to deliver great value with testing fixtures against Arsenal, Liverpool and United to contend with.

As already touched upon though, there are weaknesses in the Arsenal and Liverpool rearguards, so Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy may still be able to produce attacking points. The pair also have to be backed to thrive against lesser sides such as Swansea and Burnley, making the decision to stick or twist at this juncture a tricky one.

At the back, the Foxes will face the three highest scoring teams of the opening weekend in the shape of Arsenal, Liverpool and United. Swansea and Southampton also posted some decent attacking statistics, and while the return of Robert Huth from suspension should help shore up the defence, it’s hard to foresee a great return for Leicester’s backline over the next month or so.

Hull City
In the short-term, trips to Swansea and Burnley could present the Tigers with a chance to build on their 2-1 win over Leicester. Points could be possible at either end of the pitch, although neither clash can really be classed as favourable coming on the road.

Hull’s other four fixtures on the current slate (MUN, ARS, liv, CHE) could not be much tougher, with clean sheets in particular appearing unlikely in those matches, meaning budget attacking options such as Robert Snodgrass, Abel Hernandez and Adama Diomande will more than likely struggle to repeat their opening day heroics.

I need to start 2 out of:

    a - Amat (HUL)
    b - Kone (MID)
    c - Redmond (mun)

    Any suggestions?

Sensibly you should go with a & b but you'd hate to see Redmond get something at Old Trafford and look at his points on the bench all weekend!

I can't seem to make dgw work for bench boost. Triple captain for one definitely, but getting enough players with 2 for BB to work seems hard and reliant on getting players you don't really want, losing team value etc etc..

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is there such a thing as a good or bad fixture at this stage of the season?

Last season Leicester was seen as an easy fixture at this stage - turns out facing the Foxes was one of the toughest. Now Leicester are seen as a tough fixture, but Hull showed that this season they may not be. Liverpool also made a mockery of their 'tough' fixture against Arsenal.

How much influence does your perception of whether a fixture is good or bad have at this stage? Are Man City, ManU, Lei still bad fixtures? Or is it simply too early to tell.

Is it better to look more towards form of players until we can work out which will be the tough encounters and which will be the walk overs?

There is a common theme among successful teams - often they never live up to the same standards an incredible achievement. EG - England Rugby side, Chelsea last season. Can sense that with Leicester too.

In short, there are good and bad fixtures but the distinction is more subjective with limited information. In determining good and bad fixtures, we're using our pre-conceived notions of which teams are strong or weak until evidence comes along to prove us wrong.

I would like to be brave, but good/bad fixtures always are at the back of my mind based on the historical performance of clubs/players. Tough situation to be in.

Exactly at the moment I am considering whether I can punt on Redmond piercing the defensive wall that José will create at home at Old Trafford or do I go for the traditionally ok-defence of Swansea represented by Amat.

Convention tells me to always play the attacker (an adage Evs also lives by) but am still having my doubts and my craving to do something 'different' to get ahead of the pack.

I will most likely fold and go the Redmond way.

      7 years, 10 months ago

Yes, 💩 teams don't stop being 💩 because they had two weeks to enjoy themselves in Marbella.

There will be some slight to moderate changes in quality as players and managers are signed but the League doesn't suddenly becomes a crapshoot with all previous information to be ignored.

I expect Leceister to end up outside the top 6 this year. They overachieved last year. Other teams (especially the mid-table and relegation battlers) are also now wary of their counter attacking style so they will sit back and wait for them to attack which doesn't suit Leceister. Leceister will have to attack more and take more risks and this will expose them defensively. And there is the Kante loss. I expect them to be much leakier this year and thus not as hard a fixture as last year.

      1. devils advocate
        • 10 Years

I think the Kante loss is more relevant than other teams now knowing their game plan. I don't buy into the latter's reasoning as their game plan was obvious and evident throughout last season from the start and teams still couldn't cope with it regardless.

        Why?

Because Kante did the work of 3 players allowing the Foxe's game plan to eventually work as opposition teams committed harder to break through the 'Kante Effect' and grab a winner, thus allowing those chances to come eventually as more space opened up behind and in between the opposition defence. That's why Leicester seemed to win quite a few matches 1-0 as they were patient.

sometimes its the fixtures we think are tricky get us the points, like liverpool winning at arsenal for only the 2nd time and cout getting 2 goals
or vardyplaying for the champions, blanking against a promoted team with alot of injured players, and no permanent manager in place,
amat, capoue surprising people as their bench fodder as people didnt fancy them or their fixtures, this it what makes the game so good ! good luck all

Don't think it's too early, we have a lot of previous information to go on and can review summer signings as to whether we think a team will improve or not.

The main thing to try and not do is be stubborn about a team that may be performing better or worse than expected like last year.

GW1's results were mostly as I expected, except Hull v. Leicester. And a good thing too. If results were really that unpredictable, then FFS's season ticker and rmt would be no use.

"Difficult" fixtures might turn out to be easy just now; "easy" fixtures are very unlikely to become difficult just now.

Hull didn't win because they are suddenly a difficult fixture; Leicester lost because they're not yet a difficult one. But they will be.

It's too early, just because a player or team played well GW1 doesn't meant that they're the form player to have. If they do the same GW2 then go ahead and get them, but you can't say any fixture is good or bad this early in as look at Leicester (as you said). Give it a few weeks and then act on the form players, until then it's mostly a guessing game on apparent form and fixtures.

Yea I totally agree. Didn't expect Burnley to put 2 past Liverpool without reply! Ended this week with 20 points on the bench again! This time it is Gray and Heaton. Last time was Foster and Capoue!

I think based on the last two games, I would definitely put Man City and Man Utd as legitimate tough fixtures.

Arsenal,Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester still haven't got their gears running yet so it remains to be seen whether they are tough/bad/easy fixtures yet.

So for me, this early, only the manchester team are the team to look out for and others choose based on form and gut feeling.

Fairly settled with the rest of my squad except the following dilemma...reading this article surely didnt help my cause
    1) swap Tadic to Barkley? (Tadic did look sharp though against Watford)
    2) Andre Gray( tough fixtures as mentioned, should I consider swapping to Carroll?)

Options much appreciated and really needed!

I think the presence of Koscielny i overestimated. He is still playing alongside holding or chambers who are both poor and make mistakes. Arsenal might still miss Ozil and Giroud and will miss the injured players from last match. Psycologically, Arsenal will still feel they are not playing with their best team and it could affect them negatively.

it was uploaded onto iTunes very late last week, late on Friday if I remember correctly.

On that note, I wonder why it isn't possible to upload it much earlier? I'm sure there are many of us who prefer to listen on the go than to have to watch it. Mods?

    Play:

    A. Morgan (ARS)

    B. Long (mun)

Leaning towards playing Morgan and benching Long as I think there is more chance Morgan will cs than Long score.

Play Long. CSs can get wiped out in freakish circumstances even if a team is defending well. Man Utd don't look strong at the back yet so Southampton should threaten to score at least.

Other options such as Firmino and Payet are way more tempting for me
Midfield of Haz - Redmond - Deulefeu - Mahrez - (fletcher)

Payet Firmino or hold Mahrez. Big question...

Hold for another week. Firmino is one of several Liv players who could share points whereas Mahrez is probably Leicester's main man. Payet may be eased back in.

If it's your only transfer and you really know who you want sure. I have Vardy as well but still doubting about Ibra, Costa or Lukaku so keepign another week to make sure I make the right decision on his replacement.

I asked this question the other day but got no detailed responses.

What makes Willian such a bad bet? He plays for Chelsea (who I think will get in top 3 this season) in the same sort of role as Haz, and surely must be a better bet than Lamela and the other 7.0/7.5s?

    1. Netley Lucas
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 10 months ago

He's not bad, it's just that Hazard playing well is much better fantasy-wise.

Obviously at 2.5 mil it is a sacrifice. Instead of comparing him to Haz, why when we compare him with other 7.5/7.0s is he not more popular?

Last night I dreamt that Leicester lost 4-1 to Arsenal.

Emile Heskey got the opener for the Foxes. While an Eden Hazard hattrick and a Jamie Vardy own goal gave Arsenal a comprehensive victory.

What this tells about Saturday and about my mental health remains to be seen.
