Captain Poll – Gameweek 3

This morning we take a look at our latest captain poll, assessing the likely favourites for the armband in Gameweek 3.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We predicted that Sergio Aguero (13.1) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) would slug it out at the summit of the Gameweek 2 captain poll. They not only dominated voting but both excelled, bringing in a brace, maximum bonus and a 26-point Fantasy Premier League haul to those who chose to captain them.

We expect more of the same this Gameweek as Manchester City’s Aguero hosts a West Ham side that has looked disjointed due to injuries so far this campaign.

Meanwhile, the Manchester United frontman, who at 51% ownership has overtaken the 50.2% owned Aguero as FPL’s most popular player, visits a Hull side that have won both their opening fixtures. In the big Swede’s favour, the Tigers have conceding the third highest number of shots in the box of any Premier League side to date.

However, there could be a third protagonist to upset this duo’s dominance, with the 22.9% owned Eden Hazard (10.1) bringing in attacking points in both matches under Antonio Conte. The Chelsea wide man entertains a Burnley outfit that have conceded more shots than any side this season.

For those eyeing up a differential armband candidate, Southampton midfielders Dusan Tadic (7.4) and Nathan Redmond (6.1) look ideally placed. Although Tadic has yet to register attacking returns, his strong underlying statistics suggest that could change when Sunderland visit. The Serbian’s ownership in FPL is now down to just 4.6% after being discarded by more than 42,000 managers.

Nathan Redmond, who sits in 11% of FPL managers’ sides, has a goal to his name already and looks set to profit from his out of position striker role in this potentially prosperous encounter.

Ibrahimovic’s team mate Paul Pogba (8.5) offers another intriguing alternative armband option, following a strong debut in Gameweek 2 at home to Southampton.

After two matches without a goal, the 16.4% owned Harry Kane (11.0) will be lucky to register significant interest. The Spurs striker has continued to struggle in front of goal without the suspended Mousa Dembele in the side and, in Gameweek 2, his star waned further when he was forced into a number 10 role to accommodate Vincent Janssen (8.0), who was Tottenham’s most attacking player against Crystal Palace. Visitors Liverpool have already shipped five goals this season, but it could be the 1.9% owned Janssen who prospers rather than Kane.

Another of last season’s stars to fall out of favour this term is Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez, who has been jettisoned by 35,000 FPL managers already this Gameweek on the back of two relatively poor displays from last season’s champions. A home tie against Swansea, however, could be the ideal fixture for the 27.9% owned midfielder to prove he is worthy of a price hike to 9.5 this season.

Can you play a WC and then cancel/reset it later, just to see what sort of team you can build?

You can't cancel your WC. But you can just remove all your players and start building from scratch, just don't confirm the transfers.

just play around making the transfers, but don't confirm them afterwards.

u don't need to activate WC. Just tranfer out ur all player and try to build what u want.Don't click on confirm transfer. Reset when u r happy.

You only need the wildcard when you're confirming the transfers. If you're only playing around and don't intend to confirm then just build the team racking up the hits.

I think I would.. Assuming you have a bench player as backup (defender or 5th mid).

No need to take a gamble on a cheap mid you're not sure about for a hit.. Especially with the international break around the corner.

Zaha and Townsend are very selfish players, they will need to change if they are to benefit Benteke, and themselves - in FPL terms, with assist points.

Townsend has lots of shots, but a very poor conversion rate.

OK second time lucky as I was a little hasty with my calculations last time.

Penalties. This season there have been 7 already.

In the previous few seasons the average conceded was 87 (fluctuation of total penalties is minimal year on year from 2013/14 to 2015/16 seasons).

By comparison we already seen a clear increase... so if we multiply this out (I know the data this season is too small a sample, but for the sake of argument) this seasons total of 7 penalties (1 saved) then we'd be on target for a large increase in those awarded.

    38 * 3.5 = 133

That's about a third more already so the chances of penalties being conceded and scored/saved makes at least the start of the season more likely to turn up spot kicks (will the trend continue once defenders get their head around the rule change?).

Looking at the 7 conceded so far this season, 3 of these were for 'holding a player in the box' and one was remarkably soft. Would these have been given last season? Short answer is maybe, but this season they are definitely being given this season to uphold to a change in the rules to encourage fairer play. The Shawcross and Sterling penalties were the most obvious (and soft) infractions and Bojan/Aguero took them well.

In terms of clean sheets and penalty saves it should also account for a decline and improvement accordingly. Which leads us to the obvious questions, who is going to be on penalties? are they a good fit/price/prospect? And if Stoke concede one at the weekend will Baines be on spot kicks for Koeman?

Note: In 2013/14 8 penalties were conceded in the first 2 gameweeks, however there was no rule change for 'holding', so the average over the past 3 seasons is still lower than this season. With that in mind we obviously need more data I think there will be a general upward trend and a greater likelihood of some teams being far worse off at the end of the season as a result (clumsy/bulky defences come to mind).

    1. Jafooli
      • 12 Years

Sterling's might seem soft but was a peno by new rules, which states players can't look away from where the ball is and handle another player.

Blocking or shepherding in other sports.

But agreed there will defo be more penos certainly in the first half of the season. Hence get peno takers....

Yeah. I can see clumsy/inexperienced players getting caught out often. Sterling marking Shawcross was odd as it was, but then showed he's a bit fick too, by turning his back on play.

5 so far (if Gray is ahead of Vokes...?) + Marhez, Kun, Ibra, Hazard

Interested to see who the blues' penalty taker is the most. Think everton's pace/width and propensity to get corners from coleman will result in a glut. Barkley took one preseason under Koeman (and missed).

    Afternoon folks!

Is it too early to transfer Firminho out?

His stats looked superb v Burnley, but whenever i own Liverpool players, i seem to get trolled by the buggers.

International break looming, and it'd be valuable to have 2 transfers after that, but Barkley has me eyeing him up as an acquisition.

    Thoughts?

I'm keeping players for 3-4 weeks this season then discarding if they fail as I have been stung too many times in the past getting rid after 2GW. Firm was in for me from the start til GW4.

        Think he'll smash it.

Fair bit of creativity with Townsend, Zaha, Puncheon and Cabaye. Good crossing ability. Pace to create space for the big man. Could thrive.

Gonna have to see evidence before considering him though. Gray/Negredo surely better options for the time being.

Rest is still fine as i haven't seen Liverpool match to comment of Firminho ,,

Wilson/Firmino to Lukaku/6.0 mid for free?

Not sure which midfielder to get, missed out on Redmond after his rise.

Don't have Ibra if that makes any difference.

I'm interested in seeing Watford's Pereya!
Will be given license to roam forward in their 5man midfield. He hasn't been added yet, but could be an exciting cheap differential 😀

    I have 1.5m in the bank, which move;

    a. Pieters to Azplicueta
    b. Firmino to Ozil, or another 9.5m option
    c. save FT

    team is;

    Foster - Heaton
    Stones - Shaw - Friend - Pieters - Amat
    Bolasie - Hazard - Firmino - Redmond - Capoue
    Ibra - Aguero - Gray

    Thanks.

At this stage of the season, is it too risky to captain anyone other than Aguero or Ibra? For GW2 I was set on captaining Hazard and changed last minute to Aguero purely because he was over 50% on the poll. Worked out. I'm tempted by Hazard again this week. As the article says, Burnley have conceded plenty of shots already this season and Hazard looks to be at the heart of everything Chelsea do, as well as penalties.

But probably safer just to stick either Kun or Zlatan right?

    1. GoonerByron
      • 12 Years

I wouldn't take major risks but think Hazard at home to Burnley has to be put on the same sort of level as captaining Aguero or Ibra... I'd go with your gut if you think Hazard

    2. ⭐ Bemba_Da ⭐
      • 14 Years

Hazard at home to Burnley isn't risky

But in terms of ownership, so many more people own one of, or both, Kun and Ibra than they do Hazard.

Therefore more people will be captaining Kun/Ibra than Hazard, so it's safer to follow suit and use Hazard as somewhat of a differential?

So tempted to get Bolaise. Just worried if he will start and how many mins he will get this weekend. Positives on him are:
    - Cost a lot so will eventually start and get good mins
    - Koeman should get a lot out of him
    - Very promising against WBA, should of had 2 assist.
    - Him and Lukaku looked dangerous
