The Big Numbers – Gameweek 3

In the first of a number of members articles over the international break, we delve into the data from the Gameweek gone by. Palace’s approach with Christian Benteke arrives under the radar, whilst we also take a look at Paul Pogba’s first away outing for United, Chelsea’s in-form attacking duo and the performance of City’s playmaker in the weekend win over West Ham.

I think I cracked it...I got 2FTs, but I'll wont spread the wealth. Spreading the wealth requires 4FTs. The simple out-and-in requires 2FTs. I think the value of 2FTs is greater than 3-4M ITB for 2GWs.

You could argue that sitting him on the bench (playing your 4.5-5M sub for only 2 games - benching 8-8.5M in the process) is even better than using 2FTs - leaving you with 4FTs for all the other areas in your team, but:

    1. I'm happy with my team - Kun and Gray are the only players I consider shipping out (with Gray awaiting the verdict). If Gray doesn't go to jail, than there's no way I'm taking him out vs HUL and there are currently no clear targets in the 6.5M bracket.
    2. If I don't use 1FT I'm practically losing that FT.

What if Gray gets the ban? Depends on the ban length, but I'll most likely get Rondon or play Capo or 4th def... still haven't figured that 1 out - depends on the ban length.

Something to consider is the loss of value if Kun drops twice.

so with the simple out-in I'm using 2FTs to put 4.5-6M in play for 2GWs (looking at Costa, Kaku, Vardy) and there's the chance he drops to 12.9 meaning I'm saving 0.1M for the rest of the squad when I get him back... +0.1M for 33GWs.

I'm surprised Defoe isn't being mentioned more as a Kun replacement as his next 4 fixtures are EVE, spurs, CRYS, WBA. That's 3 home games. I was considering Benteke but imo he needs a couple of weeks. Considering a -4 hit re Aguero & Redmond out - Defoe & Sanchez in. Will give me

    Foster
    Azpi, Walker, McAuley
    Sanchez (c), Hazard, Lamela, Mirallas
    Ibra, Defoe, Negredo

    Jaku, Valencia, Capoue, Amat

    Thoughts & thanks.

Is Defoe a good option right now? Yes. Fixtures? Solid.

    Diva

I've just seen that post a couple of pages back recommending people link their team in their profile so they know whether to accept their advice. I don't link my team and if you can accept my thoughts without it, I would recommend those who judge posters on previous ranks to look at more than just their rank this season or last. Get to know them from the advice they share with others, not just to you. Some people play for other goals than overall rank or they may have great knowledge about a particular area of the game - for example they may be a fan of a particular team, watching all their games and knowing all the gossip.

I think what as important as their rank and history is the amount of effort and thought they have put into what they have said. It is very easy for any of us to giva an off the cuff response, uit doesn't make it a good course of action.

A reasoned argument is great whatever the source

      1. Diva
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

Indeed, a good, reasoned argument goes a long way. If you spend enough time on here you get to know the posters who offer the good, reasoned arguments so when they do offer an off-the-cuff comment you may have greater willingness to listen to it, even if they haven't offered their reasons that time.

        1. Sharpe Shuffle
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 9 months ago

I agree Diva. Both rank and previous comments are important. If you read what I wrote, I said that rank helps the community assess the value of advice. This is quite different from saying I wouldn't accept someone's advice without seeing their FPL profile. I appreciate the well thought out advice given by you and many others on here whether or not their team is linked. But sometimes a poster I don't recognize gives a reply and in these cases, rank would help to assess its validity

Apologies if you thought I unfairly tarred you with the brush of those who only want opinions of those ranked above 10,000 etc. It was more a case of your post inspiring me to write generally about my views on who to listen and what to listen to rather than trying to be a critic of your post.

To be fair the advice is only as good as the person who believes it. If people take advice off someone and act on it without using their own opinion and it is bad advice it is really their own fault.

Always check the sources yourself if possible or wait for confirmation

A lot of the time, it's just an opinion (EG what's better: A or B) and it goes without saying that you have to apply your own opinions too. But it would be cool if there was a way to measure the quality of a commenter based not only on FPL rank but on upvotes/likes on their comments from the community, articles/analysis posted, frequency of posts etc

No need to apologize. If someone writes a considered and reasoned comment, or its someone who I know has a history of writing thoughtful commentary, I'm much less inclined to check their rank. It's those off the cuff comments where rank can be helpful.

What would be really awesome is a system where comments could be upvoted/liked and then commenters could be rated based on quality, frequency, likes/upvotes and FPL history.

I think the mods do have some background counter of who has accrued the most upvotes. Don't forget though that some people spend more time on here than others and some people upvote funny comments, not just good FPL comments, so it's not a pure guide to quality.

Hi, I had a feeling that post might elicit some interesting pushback. Then I had to leave the site for a while and forgot to read the replies. To TM who said "Mark's ranked over 1m" - do you mean this season? Obviously I don't mean only consider this season. But if someone is giving advice and they consistently finish outside the top 1 million at the end of the season, their advice isn't worth as much as someone who regularly ranks in the top 10k.

I totally agree that it's important to get to know posters from the advice they give others. My comment really stemmed from a response I got earlier today from someone who stated confidently "no no no" to an idea I suggested for my team. I wasn't familiar with them and when I looked at some other comments this same person had posted, I had a few doubts. If I could see their rank for the previous seasons, it would help me (and the community) assess the validity of the advice.

I'm not saying anyone with a poor rank has nothing valuable to say. It looks like Michudagawd really twisted my words with the last comment "Yeah because those who finish 500k+ are complete idiots right? rolleyes" - clearly this touched a nerve. All I'm saying is that rank from previous seasons along with the content of the comment can help us all decide how much weight to give to someone's advice

        • 10 Years

It's probably enough just to use the content of the comment. Even the posters with very good ranks are not necessarily offering very good advice.

      Very important post, Diva.

I think whoever the original poster is has missed the power of this site, the wisdom of the collective whole. The best strategy might actually be to keep your mouth shut and lurk, or to only ask the group for advice on FPL without giving thoughts about FPL or the PL as well. Plenty of visitors and regulars do extremely well with that strategy.

Both would leave me needing a hit, however me getting Sanchez for Mahrez would leave me 3.1 in the bank, compared to 1m if I do Redmond > Ozil.

Or would Mahrez to Ozil be better, leaving me enough to swap Lukaku straight back to Kun?

I'm in a similar spot and yes - I'm not gonna spread the wealth. Still haven't decided between Costa, Vardy, Kaku, but I'm leaning towards the troll (Kaku) or Costa

                All good options imo.

                - Leicester don't create too much and some teams will set up to stop Vardy, still think he'll get goals though.

                - Costa is probably the most consistent, but those cards and lack of BAPs are frustrating.

                - Lukaku is streaky and has great fixtures but will troll us all. Cheapest as well.

I'd give the edge to Kaku but it's tight.

Please give me some advice on this team:
    GK - Heaton (Jakupovic)
DEF - Adam Smith Bournemouth?, Shaw, McAuley (Love, Amat)
MID - Hazard, Ozil, Barkley, Snodgrass? (Fletcher)
    FOR - Aguero?, Negredo, Irba
I have 0.1million in the bank. People with question marks I'm not sure of.

        Townsend's free kicks
        Firmino's goal involvement
        Redmond's constant shooting
        Morgan's set piece threat

all this is probably irrelevant now, but I picked these players for a reason at the start of the season. Aside from having an Arsenal midfielder (and I still don't know which one I want yet), I quite like my team, just hopefully the price drops will be kind and not force my hand this year.

I don't think we've been given quite enough information to confidently use a wildcard yet. Particularly in defence where you want to implement a set-and-forget strategy to use FTs on midfielders and forwards. If anything I think I'm more uncertain than I was before the season started. United defence, WBA defence and Jordi Amat would be the only certainties for me, and I already have all three. Having said all that it is fun seeing what midfield you can get when your forward line is just Ibrahimovic, Benteke and Defoe.

              Foster
              Valencia - Shaw - McAuley - Evans - Amat.

looks good but a tad expensive for my liking. Do you really need to rotate Foster? He's good enough to play every week for me. Rotation could easily result in less points. I'm going Foster-Pickford.

      Also, I think 3 5.5's is overkill, I'd downgrade Baines/Terry to a 5.0/4.5. I'd personally lose Terry.

Just take Baines or Shaw off if you still insist with Chelsea DEF. Job is done. But if you had Shaw from the start, might hold him until his price goes up.

If you want to keep Terry, please do so. I said Baines/Terry as when I give advice I don't want to be pushing a particular move. Terry is a good option but I personally prefer Baines.

I woudn't get Holgate. Too short term, when Coleman is back he's probably out. Williams at 5.0m is probably your best bet. Though I really like PVA as a differential and he's in my current my WC draft. (Valencia Baines Van Aanholt Pieters Amat)

Transfer deadline should be the day before the season starts. Three weeks in makes no sense!

Most teams have done all their business by then anyway. Deadline day is brutal, so overhyped by SSNews.

Hey, got a slightly out-of-the-box question here.

Considering going with Sterling over Aguero long-term.

Sterling has gotten as many points as Aguero and is a lot cheaper - is anyone transferring out Aguero for Sterling in order to be able to afford other quality players? Or is Sterling expected to drop off as the season progresses, and will most likely not get anywhere close to Aguero's points?

    What do y'all think?

Sane would give Sterling Competition.....No one would give Aguero Competition

No one is better long term than Aguero.

Sterling is young and could take a step up, particularly under a good manager, but Aguero is proven quality. The question you have to weigh up is whether you can make up the likely points difference elsewhere by wisely investing into your squad the 5m extra you get with Sterling over Aguero.

This season under Pep might be different but remember Sterling's hat trick last season followed by so many blanks. Few can match the consistency of Aguero

    4th Defender options:
    A. Williams
    B. Collins
    C. Other

Consider the fact that I have 2 EVE players (Luk & Mir) already and no WH cover. Is Collins the way to go or treble up on EVE for their juicy upcoming fixtures?
Backline is: Foster, Valencia, Evans, ....., (Kingsley)
