Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Arsenal somehow manage to avoid a third consecutive Champions League opening defeat while Manchester City’s match (and the transport network) fall foul of the weather on a stormy night in every sense of the word.

Sanchez snatches point for Gunners

A 77th-minute strike from Alexis Sanchez (11.0) gave Arsenal a point they barely deserved from their Champions League opener in Paris.

Possession, attempts and shots on target stats might have been almost even, but the hosts were markedly the better side and should have won easily if not for their profligacy in front of goal.

The chief culprit was Edinson Cavani, who opened the scoring after just 42 seconds and then want on to waste three further chances as Arsenal struggled to find any rhythm throughout a torrid first half.

Arsene Wenger made three changes from the side that beat Southampton on Saturday, with Sanchez and Alex Iwobi (5.8) replacing Lucas Perez (8.5) and Theo Walcott (7.5), with the Chilean playing up front.

More surprisingly, Wenger opted for David Ospina (4.9) over Petr Cech (5.5) in goal. It was a purely tactical choice, the Frenchman insisted, which will be a relief for the 16.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers who own Cech – the third most popular keeper in the game.

“I have two world-class goalkeepers. I can give them both games. If they do not play, you can’t keep two world-class goalkeepers. But we have an in-house rule that the keepers know. It’s important to have clear rules like that. They know what the rules are for the season and, if they change, I’ll tell them. It’s down to performances whether he stays in the team but, on what he delivered tonight, David has the right to stay in the team for the next Champions League game.” – Arsene Wenger

Walcott’s omission, meanwhile, was precautionary for what Wenger described as a ‘very short term’ knee problem.

Arsenal, who looked porous at the back all night, improved after the break, but it took the introduction of Olivier Giroud (9.0) to change the course of the match. The move meant a return to the left flank for Sanchez and he thrived in that more familiar role, firing home a rebound from an Iwobi shot.

It’s two goals and as many assists in his last pair of starts now for Sanchez – he currently sits third in this week’s Captain Poll ahead of a trip to a Hull side that have conceded an attempt on goal every 4.6 minutes so far, quicker than any other side.

Giroud is yet to start a match this season, and he won’t be doing that in the Champions League any time soon having been sent off for a second bookable offence following a clash with Marco Verratti. That, conversely, could improve the striker’s domestic minutes if Wenger looks to rotate his squad for future European ties.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Monreal, Koscielny, Mustafi, Bellerin, Coquelin (Xhaka 71), Ozil (Elneny 85), Cazorla, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Giroud 63), Iwobi, Sanchez.

Pep’s European bow washed away

Torrential rain and a lightning storm that struck down Manchester’s tram network put paid to Pep Guardiola’s first group stage match as City boss.

There was time, however, to at least announce the team, with a number of decisions giving some pointers ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Bournemouth.

As expected, Sergio Aguero (13.0) was given the nod up front but remains banned domestically, while the in-form Kevin De Bruyne (10.5) continued in midfield despite limping off towards the end of the Manchester derby with what the local press had reported as cramp through fatigue.

Guardiola went for Aleksandar Kolarov (5.9) and Pablo Zabaleta (4.9) as his full-backs, which could indicate that Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy (both 5.4) are being lined up to start versus Bournemouth.

And Nolito (9.0) was replaced by Jesus Navas (6.4), again suggesting that the Celta Vigo signing is being preserved for a run at the Cherries.

The tie was re-scheduled to this evening, leaving City with just two full days to prepare for the Bournemouth fixture, and Guardiola might well shuffle his pack further as a result.

Man City XI: Bravo, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov, Fernandinho, Navas, De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling, Aguero.

83 goal attempts conceded in 384 minutes = an attempt conceded every 4.63 minutes. It's true.

Obviously a lot of debate with the no Ibra discussions today. But, if you had to pick ONE and only ONE between Augero and Ibra, who would it be....

    That answers your question surely?

Just like you could only really pick one between Hazard and Sanchez, or Ozil and Firmino along with any other 6m option, or 4.5m midfield bencher - you can only have one....

    (That's my opinion)

Exactly, only ever Aguero. Therefore, I don't think you can have both without seriously sacrificing your team.

You wouldn't put both Hazard and Sanchez in your midfield would you...

So why is this any different?

So is Lukaku, Benteke etc for their respective teams.

I just think the rest of your 13 will suffer if you have an 11.5m and a 13m striking partnership.

Pretty much all these kind of questions are pointless without context. These players are not the same price, so decision you make has ramifications for scoring ability elsewhere in the team, and how severe these ramifications are depends on the cost of the players who emerge as must-haves.

      B) Barkley to Mane / Firmino (likely a move I'll be making next week anyway)

Hi all. It pains me to see the points on the bench in 3 of the 3 weeks played so far.
I actually blame Capoue for this. Each week I have a quiet word with him and tell him he's benched and he can't believe what he is hearing.

Not a fan of using chips until double GW's but the All Out Attack comes into play in this GW and Capoue has been given the green light.

My other headache is allowing Lukaku to keep the armband or let him loan it to Ibra. Surely it owuld be criminal to strip him of the captaincy after his 11 minute heroics?

When the CS starts coming, then we can get him, it only takes 1 transfer...why keep him for all the 2 point hauls...plus Otamendi is playing better than him..when Kompany returns...Otamendi and Kompany might be the 2 CBs

I can't agree that Otamendi has been playing better than Stones, maybe stats? But, Stones has been absolutely brilliant so far. And will only improve.

          Here's my wildcard team:
          Heaton / Foster
Valencia Williams Evans (Amat, 4.0 (Mariappa))
Hazard Cazorla Antonio Capoue 4.5 (Maloney))
          Ibra Aguero Lukaku

          Questions:
          1. Do I go for Lukaku & 4.5 mid, or Mané & 4.5 striker?
          2. Do I do it for GW6, or do it now and keep Costa instead of Aguero?

          Caz, lalana, willian, sterling, 4.5
          Aguero, ibra, lukaku

I wouldn't really say you've gone too far from the template aside from in MF, the rest is fairly standard.

I'd prefer Antonio over Willian and spend the saved money elsewhere, and would also potentially be concerned about Sterling's gametime with the CL kicking off.

Was leaning towards wildcarding GW6 and now leaning towards 2 transfers or maybe 3 in GW6.

            So. Confused.

Ibra Lukaku Aguero just has too many sacrifices. Especially if you want Alexis.

I'd be ditching Sanchez as I think there's good alternatives in the rest of the Arsenal midfield. Not sure there are the same options at Chelsea.

Saying that, Chelsea don't have great fixtures coming up like Arsenal do, but Sanchez also has a bunch of internationals coming up and (as we saw at the weekend) Wenger is now comfortable resting him if needed

I think if Rashford nails down a starting place in the 11, this would convince a lot to get rid of Ibra.

            Sánchez, Hazard, LIV MID.
            Aguero, Ibrahimovic.

Yes, got plans for Aguero's back. Depends on Kane's form. If he 'gets back' then

Koscielny to 5mln defender and Ibra > Aguero.

my gw6 wc team (barring injuries)
            Foster Jaku
            Holebas Smith Baines Valencia Amat
            Cazorla Antonio Snoddy Firmino Capoue

Ok.. No Haz but Costa is on fire. Cazorla is a big if but until now he's better value than Sanch/Özil.

Cazorla inflated by recent pens and better 3rd striker value than Costa imo, otherwise looks good to me 🙂

True on Caz. I loathe Costa but he just seems to score on a whim right now. Stays much more in the box than last season. Have Lukaku atm and it's hard to drop him too... I don't trust Benteke or Palace to be more precise.

I got rid of Aguero for lukaku, and managed to improve my midfield.

Courtois; Baines Stones Shaw Amat McCauley; Hazard Ozil Payet Capoue Silva; Costa Lukaku Stuani.

Currently on 256 and used my wildcard, why lose lukaku for Aguero if he's scoring and Costa is on such good form, my idea was to ditch Payet for snodgrass and bring Aguero back in for Lukaku.. Think I will wait

This is the same thing every year... always ends in the same way. Aguero is a necessity
